PORTFOLIO YUSING CHAN
VOL 6 February 2020
With a great passion for both arts and sciences, I am a fervent learner and a critical thinker with strong design skills. My general responsibilities in the previous two firms included but not limited to producing architectural drawings and supporting documents; conducting national and local building codes research; communicating and coordinating with clients, designers, consultants, vendors, and engineers. After participating in all phases of design from schematic design, design development, construction documentation to construction administration, I especially cherish the rare opportunity of taking a project from concept to finish as it’s the best learning experience with maximum control of quality. Schematic design and construction administration are my two favorite phases of a project. The former gives me a chance to evaluate existing conditions and make critical judgments based on the analysis. The latter allows me to see things in action; teaches me construction methods and materiality. A powerful design creates not only beauty, but more importantly experiences that have a cultural, social, and environmental impact. I hope to create more poetic and meaningful architectures.

David Yurman New York 57th St Flagship Program: Luxury Retail Location: 5 E 57th St, NY, NY Design Architect: Gabellini Sheppard Associates Architect of Record: CallisonRTKL Phases: Design Development, Construction Documentation, Permit Filing After working on a few smaller-scale David Yurman stores, I was fortunate to be part of the New York City Flagship store project designed by Gabellini Sheppard Associates. The store has four stories and a total net area of 4,752 sqft. The new design works around existing conditions and constraints to create an elegant space with intricate and precise details throughout. Part of the challenge is to maintain design integrity throughout iterations and continue to keep the project under budget and opening on time. We worked closely with the clients, designers, and consultants to polish and refine details. It’s a challenging and rewarding project that opened in December 2019.

Nike House of Hoops Program: Retail Location: New York City Design Architect: Nike Architect of Record: CallisonRTKL Phases: Design Development, Construction Documentation, Permit Filing, Construction Administration Nike House of Hoops stores are designed by Nike’s in-house designers in Portland, Oregan and maintained by Footlocker management team in New York City. They are small scale projects ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 Sq.Ft. that are quick and demanding. One of the biggest challenges for the 34th HoH store is to hang it out to the Nike merchandise team a week before Black Friday. We were able to meet the deadline for the retail opening through various obstacles. The Brooklyn HoH store opened last fall is the very first new House of Hoops concept store. It was my role to coordinate between Nike designers, Footlocker store manager, ATS screen engineers, MEP engineers, and GC. I was also responsible for producing DD, filing, and CD drawings; conducting weekly site visits and delivering field reports. Its first day of soft opening attracted hundreds of people lining up outside to get in. Nike reported an increase of 120% in sales after store opening.

Footlocker Power Store Program: Retail Location: Vancouver, Canada Design Architect: Footlocker Retail Team, CallisonRTKL, Francl Architecture Architect of Record: CallisonRTKL Phases: Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation, Permit Filing
Footlocker Power Store is located at the busy Robson street in downtown Vancouver Canada. It has a total net area of 15,472 sqft, with a two-story building with a mezzanine level featuring a central staircase wrapped by custom trusses with lights and a DJ booth. My role included coordination between MEP engineers, Vancouver code professionals, seismic shelving consultants, structural engineers for central stairs support, vendors, clients, landlord and base building architect. I conducted code research and varified the design is up to Canadian building codes. I prepared SD, DD, CD and filing drawings as well as other relevant documents and forms. One of the challenges was to understand Vancouver building codes and its filing process. While this project was underway, we were awarded another Footlocker power store project located in Dallas Texas that has Footlocker, Footaction, and Champs all under one roof with a total area of 19,500 Sq.Ft. Both stores are scheduled to open in mid-2020.

Digital Media Performance Center Program: Performing Arts Center Location: 21st Street, Chelsea, NY Studio Critic: Erik Churchill, Bryan Kim Structural Professor: Holger Schulze-Ehring
Course: Integrated Design Development Studio Structural Partners: Brian Murtha, Laura Stenroos Phases: Concept, SD, DD Duration: September 2016 - May 2017
This performing arts center aims to provide space for the public and the performers. The organic form is reminiscent of mountains. The design consists of three peaks that correspond to the front of the house, the performance space and the back of the house. The public is invited to go in and explore the building through a series of stairs that lead to different performance spaces and galleries. The slits along the facade allow lights to penetrate and accentuates the fluidity of its curvature.

Duality at Play Program: Residential house Location: Tomhannock Reservoir, Troy, NY Studio Critic: Adam Dayem Course: Architectural Design Studio 5 Duration: September 2015 - December 2015
The house is generated from a set of iteratively transformed solid geometric shapes starting with four cubes. The intersections of these bodies are hollowed out to create the geometric space within the mass, then merged into a single unity. The design holds two different yet similar identities, one above ground and the other one below ground.

Wind Tower Program: High-rise Residential Tower Studio Critic: Edwin Liu Wind Tower is a high-rise residential building for college students and local Troy residents. By harnessing the wind to produce electricity, it is aimed to be a self-sufficient building that provides sustainable and low-cost living experience. The original building mass is punctured by three types of tubes to create circulation, living space and wind tunnels. The majority of tunnels are pointing in the northwest direction, where the dominant wind comes from.

Metamorphosis OMI International Arts Center Program: Arts Center and Artist Residency Location: Ghent, NY Studio Critic: Fleet Hower Course: Architectural Design Studio 3 Duration: September 2014 - December 2014 Inspired by the organic sculpture that mimics tree trunks with an inorganic material such as plastic, the OMI International Arts Center obtains natural form through a series of iterations. During the iteration process, I used a Grasshopper script in Rhino to create the organic shapes that are constructed with one line spinning and rotating. It’s a balancing act between control and chaos. The artist residencies and studios spread around the main building; giving each artist their own space as well as a gathering ground for the community and visitors. Each studio is like a different note on sheet music, together they compose a melody of the surreal.
