FASHION CONSCIOUS In recent years, the issues of ethics and environment have created ated waves within the fashion industry. Critics define sustainable fashionn as being consistent over a long period, not just for one season. This month, onth, we look at a new breed of fashion brands that are committed to being ethical and eco-friendly for the long term. Beyond Skin (beyondskin.co.uk) offers stylish vegan shoes oes and has an ethical business model. This UK-based company’s products oducts are made in Spain in line with a cruelty-free approach, in terms rms of humans, animals and the environment. With a similar philosophy, Stock Mfg. Co. (stockmfg.co) adopts an interesting concept that helps reduce waste related to unsold products. Designers submit styles which are put up on the website for consumers to vote for. Only when enough votes are received does a style go into production. Known as the pioneer in environmentally sustainable fashion, hion, People Tree (peopletree.co.uk) has been selling Fair Trade ade fashion since 2001, working with artisans and farmers in developing countries. Another award-winning brand, Titania Inglis (titaniainglis.com) comes in limited quantities and is made of carefully sourced fabrics, including vegetable-tanned leather, organic cotton and deadstock wool. Big brands and high-street retailers are also jumping on the upcycling and eco-fashion bandwagon, launching one-off or sustainable seasonal collections. Michael Kors is partnering with the United Nations World Food Programme, which is committed to raising millions of dollars over the next few years through campaigns, events and limited-edition fundraising products. Aside from its regular Conscious Collection, made from sustainable materials, H&M (hm.com) has launched Global Recycling, in an effort to prevent clothing from ending up in landfill sites. Customers will be able to bring unwanted garments from any label to the store H&M Conscious and receive a voucher in return. Collection High street retailer Topshop (topshop.com) has another way of reducing textile waste: launching a capsule collection made from discarded material, together with eco-fashion brand Reclaim To Wear. Levi’s (levi.com) has introduced a new collection of denim incorporating recycled plastic bottles and food trays. The Spring 2013 Levi’s Waste<Less collection will use over 3.5 million recycled bottles. Similarly, Billabong’s Recycler Series, which was launched a few years ago, aims to reduce PET waste by giving plastic bottles a new lease of life. To date, 47 million plastic bottles have been recycled into 1,979,000 metres of fabric.

Start Up Right
By Yusrina Yusoff
You have a brilliant fashion business idea that you believe will be successful. Now what? Learn the secrets of success from these experts who spoke at the recent Asia Fashion Summit.
M
arket research is the most important thing when venturing into a business, says Ann Kositchotitana, founder of Front Row Group. Knowing your market very well can save a lot of money. Ann explains that she lost at least $100,000 in her first year of business because she stocked only what she liked and overlooked others’ tastes. Before choosing your market, you need to ask yourself whether you want to be doing a line for the masses or something more niche. Which country or region do you want to target? Who are you creating the brand for? You need to know the answers to these questions and keep them in mind.
Study your competitors to learn about their brands and find out where you stand in relation to them. Even if you’re unique and don’t have many direct competitors, that doesn’t matter: in the consumer’s mind, you will always be grouped with a set of similar brands. “Production is what kills most brands,” Ann reveals. Without careful strategic planning, your brand may not even materialise. In the world of fashion, absolutely anything can happen. One label recently shut down its operations because its seamstress retired. It could not find another seamstress or even a factory with the specific skill set to produce garments of the same quality. Although this problem might sound like a simple one that could be solved easily, it meant the company had to cease trading. The lesson here is that it is wise to spread your production resources in different areas or even countries. Natural disasters, or something as basic as problems with customs
You’re already 50 percent successful essful w when you’re well-targeted. clearance, can also be unexpected and expensive hurdles. In this digital era, marketing goes beyond magazines, billboards and direct mail. Consumers are now updated with real-time information. What’s happening this second may go viral the next. Integrating social media into your business is essential, and most start-ups begin with an online store. Which digital tools should you use? Daniel Saynt, founder and CEO of
Socialyte (socialyte.co) recommends the big five of social media – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram. Barbara Ende, president of Sycamore Marketing Group Inc, wants you to ask yourself: Do your customers use that particular social media tool? You should only invest in those that feature in your customers’ everyday lives and in tools that offer the most creativity.
So Social media is 90 percent telling rcen nt and only 10 percent g actual selling. Using social media is all about telling and only 10 percent actual selling. Build a fan culture and let them talk among themselves – they are your brand ambassadors. Continuous digital marketing will help drive traffic to your website consistently. By feeding followers information, you stand a higher chance of increasing their interest in your products. They may not buy now, but they will in the future. Brands should also connect with others who have a strong social media presence. Tap into their followers and make your presence felt. If they’re interested, they will start following your brand too. Last but not least, network with people from the industry, talk to experts and tap into their knowledge. Attend trade shows, workshops or conferences such as Asia Fashion Summit (www. asiafashionsummit.com), an annual event where experts, buyers and CEOs from the industry gather to discuss fashion and business topics. eL

HANNA LEE
Working for top designer Karl Lagerfeld is a priceless education no fashion college can offer. The plan was to stay in Paris for only six months, but when Hayley got a job with Karl Lagerfeld she wasn’t going home anytime soon. During Paris Fashion Week, she escorted buyers from upscale stores like Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue to the shows. “I freelanced for Karl Lagerfeld during Fashion Week, and when the buying season was over, I followed up on orders.”

More than a passion. At the age of 18, Hayley Grobman, founder of accessories label Hanna Lee, packed her bags and left London for Paris to learn French. “I thought it was necessar y if you wanted to work in fashion, and that is all I ever wanted to do.” Determined to make it big in this cutthroat industry, she worked in retail on weekends while at college to gain experience and practise her French.
Globetrotting fashionista. After Paris, Hayley returned home and found a job at J & M Davidson, a luxury leather brand where she gained valuable insights that helped further her career in retail. Yearning for change, she moved again to another fashion capital – New York City. There, she worked for one of the jewellery designers whose collections are now stocked at Hanna Lee. “My whole thing is selling.” Opening a retail shop had always been Hayley’s ambition, one that she achieved 17 years ago together with her mother. It was such a success that they decided to open another boutique – Hanna Lee Lifestyle – selling high-end apparel, shoes and more. However, unable to juggle family life and two businesses, they closed it down when Hayley was pregnant with her second child. It was tough, too, competing against giant retailers like Zara, which had just arrived in the UK. Hanna Lee e moves to the Far East. When Hayley moved to Singapore re in 2008, she saw a gap in the market for affordable, trendy jewellery. Seizing the opportunity, she began selling at fairs, then n from her home. As demand grew, she felt elt that she needed a store; after seeing ng an empty shop in Tanglin Shopping Centre, she e signed the lease forr it. Her instinct wass right, and a second outlet is opening soon at Cluny Court.t. “I don’t believe ieve you have to spend a lot of money to look good.” After all, Hanna Lee’s mission is to offer affordable fashion. Hayley is of those few who don’t flutter at the sight of the iconic blue box. The first time she received a Tiffany & Co necklace was from her husband, a few months after they started dating. It was the last time, too. “It’s just not me,” she says. She would pick a fashionable neon necklace to match her peplum top over a silver bean any time. CHANGE LINGERIE
Underneath It All
It’s one of the first things we put on when getting dressed, yet it’s often our lowest priority. METTE HOLTE JENSEN of Change Lingerie tells us why it’s important to get fitted properly for a bra and shares some useful tips. Are you wearing the right size? Loose straps? Spillage? Underwire digging into your flesh? If that’s you, you might be wearing the wrong size or style. It’s been said that as many as eight in 10 women wear the wrong size. Wearing an ill-fitting bra may lead to health problems such as headaches, back pain and shoulder issues. While it’s true that a heavier bust can cause greater problems, Mette says it’s important that even smaller-chested women wear a properly fitted bra.
Get professionally fitted We wear a bra every day for long hours, so it makes sense to get professionally fitted with the right cup and band size. When trying a a bra on, check
that it fits firmly when worn on the loosest hooks. This way, when the bra begins to stretches after a number of wearings, you’ll be able to tighten it. The straps should be adjusted to the right length without pulling up at the front or the back. The correct band size will ensure adequate support at the sides instead of the straps having to hold all the weight. If your bra is riding up at the back, you might need a smaller band size.
Women come in all shapes and sizes Women change bra size about six times in their lives due to ageing, weight gain or loss, menopause and other hormonal changes. Because of this, Mette suggests you get professionally sized at least every year. Young or old, and whether you’re an A-cup or an H-cup, it’s not only important to get the correct size but also to choose the proper style for your shape. Mette points out that while a sheer T-shirt bra is suitable for those in their 20s and 30s, it might not provide enough support for an older woman; she recommends wearing a padded bra to lift the bust. Proper support can also prevent further sagging. We asked Mette if busty women should wear strapless bras and received a resounding “no”. However, if that strapless dress

Proper Care To make your intimates last longer: • Avoid putting them in the washing machine. Instead, hand-wash them • Soak them in a basin of water with a mild detergent • Rinse with water and hang out to dry • To retain their shape and avoid damaging the fabric, don’t wring out after washing
is too beautiful to resist, she suggests getting a good tailor to sew padding into it.
For active women Wearing the right size applies not only to everyday bras, but to sports bras and swimwear too. Avoid sports bras that come in generic sizes like S, M and L. Most of Change Lingerie’s sports bras and swimwear come in different cup sizes, providing comfort and support for when you’re moving about energetically. Extra Help If your bra straps dig into your skin or slip off your shoulders, get some silicone Comfy Straps ($12).

OUTLET SHOPPING IN SINGAPORE Unlike San Francisco and Milan where the best outlet stores are situated, Singapore is filled with endless mega-malls. So where do we go for branded goods at great prices during non-sale periods? We’ve done the hard work for you and hunted down some of Singapore’s outlet shops, so read on. Located opposite Expo MRT station, Changi City Point houses several outlet stores including Timberland, Lacoste and Nike Factory. Here are some stores worth visiting, especially for shoe lovers: Charles & Keith (#01-33) stocks past season collections with discounts up to 70 percent. We found a great pair of strappy wedges for only $16.90. Sizes 40 and 41 are usually available. More shoes like Etienne Aigner and Franco Sarto are available at Branded Outlet (#02-29/30). Sizes run up to 42 for Franco Sarto. Their heels and wedges are comfortable, too. Priced at $99 (usual $199), they’re a pretty good deal for quality Italian shoes. SENSITIVE SKIN
Caring for sensitive skin can be tricky and frustrating. YUSRINA YUSOFF met up with some industry experts for advice and solutions.
N
owadays, a myriad of products and brands claim to improve skin condition, as a quick stroll through any department store will confirm. It can be quite confusing and taxing to find the right product, especially if you have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is a broad term and the condition varies from person to person. Some may be allergic to particular ingredients in skincare products, while others may react to certain types of food. A few might have sensitive skin as a result of an existing skin condition such as acne, rosacea or psoriasis.
Before you begin your product search, first find out if you really do have sensitive skin. According to Christina Arseni, International Marketing Director for Apivita, a natural cosmetics company from Greece, many people think they have sensitive skin but they don’t. “They’re just stressed. Half of all skin problems have psychological causes. You don’t sleep, you eat unhealthily and suddenly you have bad, sensitive skin.” A c c o rd i n g to M a h M e i H u i , pharmacist and founder of The Skin Pharmacy, a person with sensitive skin is someone whose skin frequently reacts to skincare product ingredients that normally do not cause any skin reaction in the majority of people. “The only way to ‘cure’ this problem,” she says, “is to avoid the products or ingredients that cause the reaction.”
Ingredients and Labels Professional makeup artist Kelly Bilimoria always advises her clients to learn how to read and understand product labels in order to make betterinformed decisions. Ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), benzoyl peroxide and boric acid can be harmful to sensitive skin as they can make it dry and cause allergies and irritations. Some people may even have a reaction to strong chemicals such as ammonia that are found in many hair colouring products.

Yvonne Pay, Marketing Manager of Organic Hair Professional explains, “Ammonia is harmful as it can produce rapid skin irritation. It can not only negatively affect the cuticle of the hair but also damage the amino acid or protein found inside the hair shaft.” She recommends that you seek professional help rather than colouring your hair at home. Products without parabens and ammonia are most suitable for sensitive scalps, which is why she uses Natulique hair colours at her salon. Made in Denmark, this gentle product range has one of the safest formulations in the beauty industry today. To m i n i m i s e i r r i t a t i o n d u r i n g shampooing, Apivita adds prickly pear to its shampoo formula. They also use it in their sun-care line as it’s a very strong anti-irritant. “The secret is to use a sulphate-free shampoo,” Christina says. Yvonne agrees. “Harsh sulphates such as ammonium laureth sulphate and ammonium lauryl sulphate can strip your hair, causing it to become dry and eventually leading to breakage.” For highly sensitive skin, Yvonne recommends O’right Dandelion Shampoo as it is hypoallergenic and has a tear-free formula; or O’right Tea

NATURAL INGREDIENTS Liquorice – treats redness and rosacea Willow herb – antimicrobial, anti-irritant, a natural antiseptic used to soothe common skin irritations Witch hazel – found in toners and moisturisers, it promotes hydration and reduces redness Almond oil – excellent emollient for softening and conditioning the skin Lavender – the flowers heal and soothe various skin complaints such as acne, skin allergies, inflammation, sunburn, dermatitis and eczema CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS Bismuth oxychloride – a potential irritant Benzoyl peroxide – an antibacterial ingredient that can cause allergies Salicylic acid – can lead to dry skin and allergies Oxybenzone – the UVA-absorbing chemical in sunscreen Petrolatum – can clog pores As a general rule of thumb, avoid products containing fragrance or alcohol, or look for hypoallergenic products.

According to Mei Hui, the fewer the ingredients, the better. “Go for products with a very simple ingredient list. Our mildest face cleanser, the Amino Deep Cleansing Powder, has only four ingredients and is preservative-free.” The Skin P h a r m a c y ’s A m i n o ra n g e was developed especially for sensitive skin and features cleansers for various skin types, toner, moisturiser and body wash. They all contain amino acids, which form a Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) on the skin. NMF helps the skin to hold water and improves hydration, which sensitive skin usually lacks. “Fragrance is one of the top 10 culprits of skin reactions, which is why we ensure our products at The Skin Pharmacy are fragrance-free.” She suggests avoiding products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) or fruit acids, as they cause skin to exfoliate and may further irritate an already compromised skin.
Natural ingredients like chamomile, olive oil and almond are used in some beauty products
Find out the ingredients you might be allergic to at a perfume-making workshop
Nora Gasparini, founder of L’Atelier Parfums et Créations, recommends joining a perfume-making workshop so you can test every ingredient, find jo out ou what you’re allergic to and avoid it. The common ingredients people are allergic to are cinnamon because of its cinnamic alcohol, eugenol found in al cloves, and roses and frangipani. She recommends using eau de cologne, cl as the concentration of ingredients is smaller than in eau de parfum.
Is natural always better? “N definitely not,” Nora explains. “You cannot control natural. Usually, “No, people with sensitive skin react faster to natural ingredients than those with pe normal skin.” no o Founder and Managing Director of Porcelain, The Face Spa, Pauline Ng agrees, “Many natural ingredients may also spark an allergic reaction and may ag g be e more unstable than chemical compounds. Sometimes, to seek optimal treatment, we might require the use of chemical ingredients.” tre e The Skin Pharmacy founder Mei Hui agrees. “Not everything natural is always suitable for everyone. Sometimes, even natural ingredients can cause al w problems in those with sensitive skin, although they might be perfectly fine pr ro with w it a chemical ingredient.” Sometimes, as Niki Koutsiana, President of Apivita, points out, an individual’s history of product use gives better evidence than a clinical study ind off a chemical ingredient created in a laboratory. “In the past, people believed natural products were not good for sensitive skin. But people have used natural na a ingredients like chamomile, olive oil, and almond for many years without any ing problems. This is the best kind of study.” pro pr

Tips and Tricks Having regular scalp treatments is very important, particularly if you have scalp issues, as the scalp ages 12 times faster than the rest of your skin. At Organic Hair Professional, they suggest a monthly Scalp Exfoliating Spa treatment to gently exfoliate dead skin, dandruff and excess sebum, allowing the scalp to breathe again. At home, Yvonne suggests massaging the scalp using O’right Hair Tonic for two to three minutes to stimulate blood circulation, prevent hair loss and eliminate dandruff and itching, keeping the scalp healthy. According to Niki, the most important part of a skincare regime is cleansing, and this needs to be done properly both in the morning and at night. Otherwise, impurities will build up. She has noticed that people tend to buy expensive moisturising and nourishing creams, thinking they will work better, but underestimate the importance of cleansers and buy cheap, ineffective ones. Mei Hui emphasises the importance of moisturising to allow the skin to heal itself. Sensitive skin is usually compromised in its structure and is therefore unable to hold water as well as normal skin does, so it is important to keep your skin well moisturised all the time.
Whenever you’re out shopping at beauty counters, Kelly suggests asking for sample-sized products. Most major brands have them and will allow you to try before you buy. This way, you will know if you’re allergic to the product before paying a large sum of money for the full-size product.
Keep the scalp healthy with O’right’s Hair Tonic
The scalp ages 12 times faster than the rest of your skin. “Mineral makeup contains few ingredients, no fragrance and no alcohol. Being inert, minerals don’t react, so they’re perfect for those with sensitive skin,” says Kelly. “However, they can be more expensive than other makeup. Brands that are good for sensitive skin include Clinique, Bare Minerals, Dermacolour, Make Up For Ever, Estée Lauder and Physicians Formula.”
When removing makeup, use oilbased products as they contain less detergent. You should also regularly change your makeup products, especially eyeliner, mascara and sponges, and wash all your makeup brushes frequently. Kelly also recommends investing in a primer, especially for those with sensitive skin, as it has many benefits. Aside from moisturising the skin and keeping it hydrated, a primer helps prevent cosmetics from clogging the pores and reduces redness, inflammation and visible pore size. For fragrance, just dab on a little. According to Nora, a roll-on is better than a spray bottle as much less skin is exposed to the product.

Once you find a product that suits you, stick with it. Switching can result in more unwanted skin reactions. Applying sunscreen is an essential part of your skincare regime
L SensitiveSkin2.indd 305
Staying to true to The Skin Pharmacy’s philosophy, Mei Hui recommends a simple skincare routine: wash, moisturise and apply sunscreen. These basic steps are sufficient for most people. Occasionally, pamper the skin with a hydrating mask. She advises clients to avoid harsh procedures like chemical peeling, lasers and even rough exfoliation. Niki recommends using baby products as they are mild and contain natural ingredients without propylene gycol or sodium lauryl ether sulphate, which are not good for sensitive skin. Finding the best products for your skin may be a daunting task, but it’s well worth the effort. And Mei Hui advises: “Once you find a product that suits you, stick with it. Switching can result in more unwanted skin reactions.”

o internet, no spa, no airconditioning and no television – does that sound like the worst holiday ever? Quite the contrary. Unlike Kate Mallord’s tech’cation to Bangkok (EL July 2012), my stay at Telunas Beach Resort was precisely to get away from it all. For a peaceful escape that’s not too far from Singapore, Sugi Island is a perfect alternative to Batam or Bintan. One of Indonesia’s Riau Islands, Sugi Island is about 30km southwest of Batam. It’s so remote that the only way to get there is by a small traditional boat from Sekupang Ferry Terminal. The journey to Sekupang from HabourFront Ferry Terminal was a breeze – only 40 minutes. When we arrived, one of Telunas Beach Resort’s friendly staff, a girl by the name of Ian, picked us up before we boarded another boat that took us to the resort. The ride took almost two hours, but along the way there were plenty of photo opportunities: beautiful scenery and rustic wooden houses. At every turn, we craned our necks in anticipation, hoping to get our first glimpse of the resort. After an hour, we finally saw it from afar. Set in a private cove, Telunas is entirely built on stilts over blue-green water, with vast and unobstructed sea views. The staff welcomed us with refreshing drinks and helped us off the boat. The first thing we heard was absolutely nothing. No traffic, no honking, no planes, no thumping construction noises; just the crashing of the waves and the whistling of the wind. The complete silence was rather foreign to a city girl like me, but it was so refreshing. Famished after the long boat rides, we devoured the lunch buffet of deliciously simple and satisfying fare. After lunch, Ian showed us to our room – a private chalet built right over the water. We could actually see the green sea through the gaps in the wooden flooring. There’s no air conditioning, but our room was equipped with three fans and it was pretty windy, anyway; just open up the doors to the balcony and you’ll see what I mean. It also comes with a hammock. All you need is a good read and a cup of

tea while you let the sea breeze caress you. Don’t be surprised if you fall asleep! Telunas offers true peace and calm. There’s no fixed itinerary, no rush to beat the breakfast queue and no waiting to use the resort facilities. It almost felt like our own private beach, as the only other guests were two expat families from Singapore. The staff probably outnumbered the guests. What was there to do? We asked Ian. She looked at us, surprised, as though we should know the answer already. “Nothing!” she exclaimed, laughing, “Just eat, sleep and relax!” They say you can take a girl out of the city but not the city out of the girl. I couldn’t

just do “nothing”. Feeling adventurous, we took a trip to the mini-waterfall. Getting there takes about an hour and a half of trekking through jungle. Along the way we met creatures of all kinds – cows, chicken, a neon-green lizard, a Venus flytrap plant and many others. I was eager to plunge off the cliff (again, mini), into the black pool below the waterfall. Although I felt like backing out at one stage, I knew I had to do it when a 10-year-old jumped fearlessly 10 times before me. Shivering – unsure whether it was from the cold or the terror – I pinched my nose, shut my eyes, gathered the last of my courage and jumped. Despite choking when I resurfaced, it felt good! If you’re celebrating an anniversary or birthday or just want a bit of romance, make the trip even more special with a dinner by the beach or on the water. Hosts Ian and Aan did a wonderful job with the setup for our traditional Indonesian dinner. The meal consisted of a cone of yellow rice surrounded by beef rendang, fried shrimps, spicysour Indonesian salad, fried chicken and many other dishes. I recommend starting the dinner at 5.30pm, as it gets really dark from 6.30pm onwards. The only source of lighting was the fire torches surrounding us. During our dinner, the whole resort suddenly blacked out – a fairly normal occurrence as the place runs on generators, so no reason to panic. Plus, it made the evening even more romantic. Create more romantic memories by waking up early to catch the sunrise. As Sugi Island is one hour behind Singapore time, the sun rises just after 5am. Watch it from your balcony or on 296

the beach before going for breakfast. It’s a breathtaking sight, and probably one you don’t often see in Singapore. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in the package, but those who snack frequently should bring along their favourite nibbles as there aren’t any shops nearby. Telunas sells a limited range of snacks like Pringles and Tim Tams, but if you want something more filling, let them know three hours in advance and they can prepare fried spring rolls and other finger food. At breakfast, they can bring pots of coffee and tea to you in your chalet. I even brought home a box of the Indonesian tea infused with pandan leaves and aromatic rose, instead of the usual mug or T-shirt souvenir. Make sure you take enough cash with you. There are no ATMs nearby and Telunas accepts only cash or cheques. Bring along some Indonesian rupiah if you plan to visit the local markets.

If you’ve left your copy of Fifty Shades of Grey at home, there’s a small collection of books in the resort’s common room, left behind by other guests. It’s a nice idea to leave your own book behind, too. Someone will be grateful. Thanks to whoever left that copy of Sex and The City; I enjoyed reading it while swinging in the hammock. There are board games and card games available there, too. At night, we played poker while the other guests enjoyed family time together. On our last night, the staff organised a bonfire where we gathered to roast marshmallows, enjoying the night breeze. That was the moment when the voice inside my head screamed, “I don’t want to go home!” – never mind the fact that there isn’t any Wi-Fi connection, and I practically live on the internet 24/7. Sugi Island is a great place to experience authentic island life, from exploring the jungle to visiting the local market to just lying on the beach while your kids hunt for hermit crabs. Doing absolutely nothing has become a luxury, and this is the place where, if you choose, you can do just that. Paradise, I hope to see you again.
