Most successful people I know, business men, entrepreneurs and other success, as well as myself, were for the most part not straight A students, but drop outs. Some even had no education whatsoever to start with and they succeeded. Someone may then wonder if selfeducation is not more influential than formal education.

Most of us are raised with the belief that we must go to school, get good grades in order to have a good job. Our culture teaches us that these are the steps we need to take to become successful. But these days, such qualifications fall far behind as the formula for success as the new trend of being self-educated comes into play.

To succeed in life, you do not need to have great grades. It is not your scores in a college or university that makes you successful, but it is the self-education and the experiences you get in the real world.

Out There in Real Life Formal education may be necessary at the beginning of one’s life, but it doesn’t substitute the knowledge you learn and get in the real world after a school education. Many entrepreneurs become autodidacts by being partially or entirely self-taught. They never had much of a formal education but managed to achieve success via self-education.

Out there is the real life, it is where life really begins. Through tries, trials, failures and small successes, it is there that you will have your major learning experiences. A formal education can be a road block and self-education a stepping stone on the course to success but a driven personality will always find a way.

The common idea is that people who receive little or no education are usually going to end up in a miserable job cleaning the streets or in a fast food place. In no specified order, here are 15 “old and modern day” self-educated and successful people:

15 Self-Educated and Successful People 1. John Glenn He studied science. He dropped out in order to fight in World War II. He became a war hero and then an astronaut.

He was the first man to walk on the moon.

2. Henry Ford One of my favorites, Mr. Ford personifies for me the notion of the self-made man. He had next to no real education.

Born on a farm, he became an apprentice machinist. He nearly and solely created the automobile industry. And he is the first to create the mechanized assembly line.

3. Rachael Ray She never attended college. She has no formal training in the culinary arts, yet she is a cooking TV show star, author and businesswoman. Pretty good for someone who doesn't have credentials in the field she works in.

4. Mark Twain He had a very minimal formal education. He was already an apprentice at the age of 11. He worked as a printer then as a steamboat pilot. He spent his free time in public libraries to get close to an education by reading everything he could get his hands on.

5. John Rockefeller He was the son of a poor and unreliable con artist. With some education, at 16 years old, he decided to quit school and build a career. His dream goal was $100,000. He created the monopole of the oil industry. In the beginning of the 1900’s he had $200 million, and by the end of his life, he had 1 billion dollars.

6. Richard Branson Mr. Branson never finished high school. He dropped out at 16 years of age. He was also dyslexic and had poor academic performance. That didn't stop him. He firmly believes that schools should give a better education and do a better job in helping young people to be entrepreneurs.

Who doesn’t know William Shakespeare? And yet, he did not attend school past the age of 13 years old. It is amazing for a man recognized with creating over 1700 words in the English language. He as well has realized incredible works like the well-known ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Macbeth’.

8. Steve Jobs He was a great thinker of the late 20 th and early 21st centuries but was also an adopted child. He has done amazing feats without ever finishing college. We all know his computer creation as well as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Mr. Jobs invented all this by only attending 6 months of college.

9. Winston Churchill He had access to the best education but did very poorly in school. He applied three times to enter the Royal Military College. He was only accepted in the cavalry because the requirements were lower and it didn’t involve mathematics. He became one of the most powerful political figures of the 20th century.

10. Abraham Lincoln President Lincoln was more or less totally self-educated. Having a reputation of being lazy, he started anyway a career in politics in his early 20’s. By learning the law through books in his free time, he was admitted to the bar. He turned out to be a political prodigy. From what we know, he read by candlelight in his small wooden cabin.

11. Dave Thomas He was the founder and CEO of fast-food Wendy's. He dropped out of high school and work full time at a restaurant.

In 1969, he opened the first Wendy's, but he went through many difficulties until he began to appear in commercials.

12. Albert Einstein The word ‘Genius’ is linked to this man’s name. And yet, the man behind E=MC2, the theory of relativity and the winning of a Nobel prize initially failed the entrance exams to get into university. He went to college instead and got a degree. He found a way in the end but still was a high school dropout.

13. Michael Dell He is the founder of Dell Computers. He dropped out of university. He went to college where he began creating the bases of what is Dell today. He went on to build a much bigger business. He has become the youngest fortune CEO at age 27.

14. David Green He is the founder of ‘Hobby Lobby’, arts and crafts stores. He started his home business with a $600 loan and had only a high school diploma. Known as a philanthropist, he donates 50% of his earnings to Christian charities.

15. Larry Ellison He dropped out of 2 colleges. His goal was to create a work environment where one could enjoy himself. Yet he made $54 billion. He built data bases for the “CIA” and is a self-made multi-billionaire.

As you can see, in today’s information age, there are numerous ways of being self-educated, and to develop and learn the skills to become a successful entrepreneur. Starting an online business is well within reach for most people, even if learning at your own pace.
