All of us have the desire to feel like we are making progress in our life, which demands taking and making tangible steps forward. A key component for this to happen is: believing in yourself. This is where the motto “Fake it until you make it comes in. But how does it actually work?

‘Faking it’ is simply an attitude in action. If you don’t have confidence, pretend you do until you obtain the feeling or learn the necessary tools that it is all for real. It is often a way many counselors use to help their clients, when they are being at a low point in their lives. None of us are at their 100% all the time. So a feasible response is to move forward by faking it until we make it. I know I do at times. Though you may feel like it is kind of non-natural and simulated when you start, it soon becomes easier until you are actually feeling natural about it. It reminded me of the wonderful experiences I had and how I reached some of the greatest triumphs in my life. From a personal experience point of view, I would tell you that I enthusiastically rely on faking it until I make it. Because it is how I transformed my life for the better, and reprogrammed myself mentally to believe in something that wasn’t real yet but then, took physical form.
A Small Tale of Faking it. A few years ago I was facing a huge crisis and I had to make a choice. I had lost my job due to the sudden closing of the firm I worked for and I was on welfare during a year. These were some of the hardest months in my life. I worked a while for sightseeing Tour Company but I would need to create my own business. Out of desperation, the answer came to me through a book. Throughout my life, I had learned and acquired a lot of knowledge about motivation, self-confidence, self-improvement and the power of persistence. In my country, Ukraine, there exist no such job as a Self-improvement and Success Coach. People laugh or do not understand when I tell them what I do. But I began a new career online and started writing my blog and answered forums with self-confidence. It was my way of faking it.
Act as if What You Want is Real and Tangible. If you want to feel more confident, you have to act as such, because if your instinct is to wait until you feel more confident, it will never happen. You need to get into doing things or get in situations that would boost your confidence. Acting as if what you want is real and tangible. It is established on the notion that if you act mentally like the person you want to become, you will make it a physical reality. Opening my own business and working for myself with no pay for the first 6-8 months, I built myself as an authority as well as getting a reputation. I became somehow an expert. While one blog post took me usually 2 days, today it takes me 2-3 hours to write and create. I then began consulting and mentoring. I accepted anyone. It was a great challenge but I was not lacking the practical knowledge. I had it in me. Now, I am making more money, working from home, than I thought I would.
Be careful of Your Motives. I am glad I had mentors who were around to help me and still are. At times I failed, but I am still here, working in a niche I love for years now. And all of it happened because I faked it until I made it, at least to some point. Note: Faking it until you make it ONLY works when you behave like the person you want to become by changing the way you feel and changing the way you think. If somehow your motives are to demonstrate your value to other people or to show off, it will actually backfire and you will not be successful. Placing such an effort into "faking it" could deplete your mental resources by also affecting your capacity to make the right choices.

Change your behavior first and it will change the way you think and feel. Faking it or acting as if until you make it is an effective way to make your goals become reality. Make sure you really desire to make the inner changes in your life. Do not change other people's perceptions of you to feel more important.
