As stated by the 2022 Pritzker Prize winner, Diébédo Francis Kéré, every individual deserves a quality of life, regardless of their socio-economic status. Dharavi, located in India, is one of the poorest regions in the world, but it is renowned for providing some of the cheapest labor in the country. Despite this, the residents of Dharavi face daily challenges such as poor living conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and exposure to waste, germs, and illnesses. It is imperative that these individuals have access to improved and more comfortable living conditions to ensure a higher standard of living.

This project aims to revitalize Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, by transforming its harsh living conditions through architectural intervention. The objective is to preserve the vibrant community atmosphere while modernizing the housing forms and upgrading the infrastructure. The goal is to use architecture as a tool to drastically improve the quality of life for the residents of this slum community. The project will be an innovative and sustainable approach to slum redevelopment that prioritizes the well-being of its residents.

Small Space Extraction in Slums

Public Space

Some spaces outdoors, including under eaves, in doorways...

Private Space

Some interior spaces such as bedrooms, kitchens, children's rooms, etc.

The original slums were very small and although the inhabitants used all the space they could for miscellaneous items, the space was not actually very well utilised. Survival space is compressed on a large scale and the living experience is poor.

The body size diagram on the right shows the amount of space required by the human body in different forms and is important for studying the optimal design of space.
1

Current Community

The slums are now chaotic and overcrowded, and the quality of life of their inhabitants is poor.

Three typical house types in the original slum were extracted, their spatial patterns mapped out and analysed in three dimensions, extracting the parts that completely overlap and those that do not, representing the two types of space, extremely public and extremely private. By combining these two types of space, a more rational and efficient space can be obtained.

Extreme spatial analysis and transformation

Shows the logical process of the creation of the design and the change between the original slum and the redesigned slum.

The planned community is well organised and the quality of life is significantly improved.

Waste sorting is one of the key industries in the slums.

Small roadside ritual sites provide places of prayer for residents of different faiths.

Capacity 10%

Centralised waste collection areas allow sorting to be carried out more safely and efficiently.

Capacity

Adult-occupied bedrooms of between 15 and 20 ㎡ that provide sufficient space to move around.

Capacity

Small plazas for festive slaughter and celebrations, or as a place for residents to gather and chat. Capacity

Large laundries are available for domestic or factory use with water collection points and areas for drying clothes. It may also become a place for housewives to chat.

Capacity

The space in the children's room is around 10 ㎡ and can accommodate three to four children.

Capacity

The shopping street gives more opportunities for entrepreneurship and facilitates the daily life of slum dwellers.

Capacity

Make full use of the remaining space in the corners and design it as storage space to maximize space utilization.

The entrance is shaded to give residents shelter from the hot sun and to create a more enjoyable walking experience.

Separation of Community

Inter-religious strife is also one of the key conflicts in slums. By designing different religious communities, this conflict can be mitigated and a good religious atmosphere in the community can also be shaped.

Community 1

Community 2

Community 3

By enclosing the buildings, a community square can be formed, and as a religious community, small prayer stations can be set up in the square for worshippers to attend.

The Hindu religion is practised by a larger number of people, so the community will have a larger resident population and a larger area of enclosed square.

The number of Mohammedan believers is relatively small, so the size of the community is smaller, and in the same way there are prayer stations in the square.

Individual work

Housewives are often disregarded and undervalued in society, despite their critical role in maintaining families and homes. Many of these women have a rich personal history, having once been children and young adults, and yet they are frequently reduced to their domestic responsibilities. With limited opportunities for employment or income, housewives may struggle to achieve greater autonomy and social status within their families. This can lead to feelings of isolation and monotonous existence, putting a strain on their mental health and the stability of their family life. It is essential that society acknowledges the importance of their contributions and provides opportunities for these women to grow, thrive, and live fulfilling lives.

The project is aimed at empowering housewives, who have traditionally been marginalized in society, by providing them with a dedicated space for socialization and relaxation. The goal is to create a supportive environment that enables these women to re-engage with society, experiment with new lifestyles, discover new possibilities for themselves, and break free from the constraints of household responsibilities. By designing the space to encourage interaction, the project facilitates social connections and promotes a sense of community among its users. This innovative approach not only enhances the quality of life for housewives but also strengthens social bonds and creates a more inclusive and vibrant community.

Housewives have a very full schedule every day, starting at 6.30am and continuing until close to 10pm.

They are expected to do all the household chores including washing, cleaning and cooking.

They have little time for themselves or socialising.

In the ideal design of a women's community center, housewives will find a variety of functional spaces to suit their needs.

Daily household chores can be done in a group setting, giving them more opportunities to socialize.

In addition to this, the center will also provide them with a space for activities such as yoga and reading rooms, freeing them from the boredom of daily chores.

Spatial Investigation of Housewife's Daily Life

The five functions of space are studied in five different ways. In the kitchen, for example, the furniture is designed to fit the scale of the women, defining the form of the space through the combination of furniture, dividing the social distance and creating opportunities for the housewife to make friends within the limits of their comfort and security. In the case of the café, the design of the space is a study of spatial typology with the intersection of sight lines.

The openness of the space allows for open views and the more permeable space allows for more flexible routes and creates more opportunities for users to meet.

In addition to open spaces, there will also be small, relatively enclosed spaces for people who need to be alone, providing them with a sense of security and a quiet environment.

The increasing popularity of e-commerce, coupled with the impact of the pandemic, has taken a significant toll on traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, leading to a decline in the real economy. This trend has resulted in the once thriving high street economy becoming a shadow of its former self. The brick-and-mortar economy is a fundamental aspect of the region and the nation's infrastructure and is essential to their prosperity. It is imperative that we take action to reverse this trend and preserve the health of this critical sector.

The purpose of this project is to revitalize a neglected public square by implementing interactive design elements. The goal is to address the declining trend of brick-and-mortar shops and bring new life to this community space. The design revolves around a major festival and provides a designated event space to accommodate it. To create a more dynamic and engaging experience, the square is divided into individual standalone spaces using curtains as a screen. This design element provides a sense of spatial flexibility, allowing visitors to choose their own paths and encouraging interaction. The project aims to create a lively and vibrant community space that will benefit local residents and businesses for years to come.

Developments of the High Street

With the rapid increase in consumer expenditure the number of High Streets in England grew from the 17th century and reached a peak in Victorian Britain where, drawn to growing towns and cities spurred on by the Industrial Revolution, the rate of urbanisation was unprecedented.

Retail into fixed-location shops selling goods at fixed prices.

The vast majority of the populace grew their own food, and bartered for livestock and services.

Grocers and ironmongers invested in fixed premises with goods displayed behind plate glass windows.

Influenced by the online shopping trend, the high street is now more focused on providing quality retail services and personalised tailormade services.

The High Street dilemma

-Survival of the high street under the double whammy of the internet and the epidemic

More family-run shops, products on sale were prepared on the premises so that shops continued to be part workshop, part retail outlet.

According to the chart data, a large number of brickand-mortar shops have been hit hard by the rising popularity of online shopping and the impact of the epidemic, with offline retail shops withering away. Local unemployment has also risen in Liverpool. Site Plan Square Plan 11

Brazil Festival Parade Route

During the parade, the performers walk mainly in the middle of the road and the visitors are lined up on each side along the road.

The procession often stretches for long distances.

In larger spaces, such as squares or intersections, people gather around the performers to form a circle. The performer will receive attention from all angles.

When there is restraint and security, people will keep a distance from the performers and surround them with a wider line of sight.

Plan Analysis

There are small spaces around the street where visitors to the event are free to take to a small stage to perform or speak, and where passers-by can stop and watch.

Several individual parts can be seen in relation to each other due to their angle, thus creating a correlation.

Unfolding from the circular structure of the original theatre, the whole design principle revolves around flowing curves.

The path, which is formed by the curves offers the possibility of exploring more than one route while providing easy access.

Some of the professional performers will be on stage and the audience is free to sit below the stage and watch the performances.

The two circular stages are the finishing touches to the whole site, looking away from each other and complementing each other.

The hanging cloth blocks some of the direct light, allowing for a variety of light spots on the square.

The street performers stand against the wall, facing the street, with the audience gathered around them in a semi-circular arc.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent accession of Poland and the Baltic states to NATO isolated Kaliningrad, causing it to be forgotten over time. The cistern is a symbol of the region's rich history, which has undergone five distinct stages of transformation, from a wasteland to being an essential component of the Roman aqueduct, to being utilized by the war fleet, to being forgotten, and now being revitalized through the restoration of the neighborhood.

The aim of this project is to use architecture to tell the story of this historic site and to preserve its legacy for future generations. By proposing a post-war, peaceful, egalitarian, spontaneous, and utopian social model, the project aims to expand the boundaries of architecture as a discipline. It seeks to explore the connections between architecture, social experimentation, and military infrastructure, to uncover new possibilities and establish a link between the past, present, and future. Through the use of space, the project aims to recreate the five moods of the cistern and provide a unique opportunity for visitors to perceive its history and connect with its rich cultural heritage.

For a long time, it was a wasteland with nothing. There were only a few weeds, no one came, and the whole day was silent.

As the war began, aqueducts began to be built and the reservoirs that I had as the end of the aqueducts began to be built.

I was built to store and discharge water according to the needs of the soldiers fighting the war and to meet their livelihood.

With the end of the war and the establishment of a new water supply, it gradually became desolate, and I was the only one here.

The neighborhood was gradually built up, and there were a lot of people, who would hang out and come down to visit.

You can enjoy the water, relax your body and feel comfortable and free. The warm water environment speeds up the circulation of blood to people's skin and relieves physical fatigue.

In hot water as the heat rises, one feels like entering a wonderland of exploration. The increased heat helps to unblock the body's meridians and acts as a calmingagent for the nerves, while helping to relax the muscles throughout the body and boosting the metabolism.

Sports

Exercise provides great physical relaxation, helps to soothe the mood and facilitates the development of good exercise habits.

Cold Bath Room

The cold pool is often the last step in people's baths, and then after relaxing in the cold water people can percolate and swim, rest so that the body recovers and the whole person can think.

Steam Chamber

As you enter the steam pool, you will feel a sense of calmness, which will make you feel more relaxed.
