ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO DENG YUTONG Master of Architecture Selected Work 2016-2022
"STORIES OF MINORIT Y"
In our lives, there are many potential and small problems around us that affect our trajectory, but for a variety of reasons we do not try to solve them. Such as followed all the way to eat on the way home of the lonely wild cats whether there is winter, such as in the busy life how long to see a dead loved ones, such as when one party in social injustice scales how hard to change, the problem is so small and will not be filed, but real existence. Now, as an architect, I hope to try to solve these problems that most people don't pay attention to through the form of architecture. In today's industry, the function, form and other factors of architecture are greatly magnified, while the main idea of architecture itself is often weakened in the process of continuous improvement, and eventually even completely loses its own ideas. However, the construction industry itself will affect the development of nature, will be written into the history of the city, will reflect a variety of cultures, and will affect social problems. Therefore, in the first work, I defined the audience of architectural design as animals other than human beings. Just like the original law of natural development, they should also be taken into account in urban design and architectural design as the owners of cities when they gradually occupy the world. Today, the living space of wild animals has been rapidly compressed, and they can only survive in the corners of the human world. They will be taken into account in my work on an equal footing with human beings. Chinese culture has preserved thousands of years of profound wisdom, but at the same time there are also a lot of misinterpreted, exaggerated, and even demonized parts of the dross. They are like a disease of the mind that affects people's lives and restricts people's thinking. Among these cultures, I have chosen the most absurd one, which is the Chinese funeral culture. In the original Chinese philosophical thoughts, such as "Confucianism" and "Taoism", death should be a kind of inheritance and a blessing for later generations, but now it is understood as a "taboo". I will satirize this phenomenon through architecture and rewrite people's understanding of death in the way I hope. Finally, class inequality in society has always been a matter of concern, while architecture is actually a neglected and important factor affecting class contradictions. Architecture should not only serve the middle and upper classes, but also focus on the life of the people at the bottom.

Located in the industrial North Zone, the Maré Complex is among the largest low-income settlements in Rio de Janeiro, with sixteen favela slums and a population of about 140,000. More than 40,000 homes feature many different architectural morphologies, ranging from self-built shacks to government housing projects. The challenge raised by this contest is to design solutions focused on local residents and their connections to the city. The Avenida Brasil Expressway connects the airport on the north side to the downtown area on the south side. An important route for visitors to Rio DE Janeiro and it goes right through the site.

It is also an important factor in mare's connection and integration with the outside world. The slum is next to the airport, which tourists pass through; The main road in the middle of the slum is cut off by a lack of connectivity; Living conditions in the slums themselves are poor.

Phrase 1: A large number of residences are introduced in the center of the region to relieve the living pressure of slum. Meanwhile, the grid block design can effectively reduce the occurrence of slum violence and other problems. To meet the basic living needs of residents and improve their quality of life. Phrase 2: Factories and public events were built to bring jobs and a se-elonging to slum dwellers Phrase 3: Large commercial buildings and office buildings were built to attract people outside the slums. To enhance the sense of honor of slum residents and eliminate the barriers between the slum and the outside world.

PHRASE1 : THE RESIDENCE ZONE The slum itself is a spontaneous independent community, which includes a variety of functional places for living. In the first stage, we tried to change the poor status quo of the slum and its unstable social factors, so we set up residential blocks and neat street block. It is an attempt to improve the living conditions of the slum and pave the way for the economic improvement of the slum by building housing.

In order to improve the quality of life in the renewal area, the main problem to be solved in the residential area is to form independent community units, each community can solve the basic needs of life. Adults need a place to work and socialize.
Children need education, care and a place to play; The elderly need quiet rest, medical care, and a place to relax. The various functions and components of the residential area are interconnected and interact with each other to increase the vitality and inclusiveness of the community.
PHRASE2 : THE FACTORY ZONE In the second phase, we attempted to introduce industrial areas to the MARE area and, after the completion of the first phase of residential construction, to provide employment opportunities and to further strengthen the sense of community among the MARE residents and to bring economic development to them. The industrial area, whose products are mainly locally suited to food processing and other industries, is an important link in the further revitalization of MARE.

The factory is positioned as a food processing factory, and both sides are residential areas. The output value of food production and processing industry ranks top in Brazil.Meanwhile, the food processing industry has low requirements on site and technical content, which is suitable for the employment and development of people in Mare.
The combination of factories and offices provides more space for interaction, allowing industries to integrate with each other, while working together with the residential community to become a larger community for slum dwellers to live in.
PHRASE3 : THE COMMERCE BUILDING In the third stage, we introduced functional areas of commercial streets in the MARE area. As conditions in the MARE area improved, contacts with the outside world should be actively established, the most direct of which would be commercial contacts. Visitors to the MARE area would be increased to enhance contacts with the outside world while promoting the characteristics of the MARE.

To create economic and cultural integration for mare and the outside world.
The major concept is city regeneration through 3 phases and gradually offer a better life to the slum residents. Principle 1 : Survive from the atrocious living conditions. Principle 2 : Build a better education and working system. Principle 3 : Thrive and give back to the city. After three phases, MARE will be an area where people can live, work and live in daily life, where modular neighborhoods preve where good residential communities provide comfort and convenience, where factory areas provide jobs and trade opportun where commercial streets along Brazil Avenue attract tourists and provide opportunities for MARE residents to showcase the and communicate. Mare is becoming more and more integrated with the outside world and is becoming more and more w communicate with and be recognized by the outside world.

In the current situation of urban encroachment on natural space, the habitat of many wild animals is gradually transferred from the forest to the city, and the city has become another form of wildlife habitat. As part of the earth, cities should not only be designed for human needs, but also for the survival of wildlife.

They are not able to capture distant objects as clearly as human, and the color they can perceive is not as rich as that of humans too. So cats tend to stay in higher, more visible locations. Cats have a nature inclination to climb on surfaces that they can grasp. Such materials can give them a guidance. Feral cats rarely move beyond their territory. Due to the sturctures of their claws, cats will always choose a way with landing spots.

Rlationships between Human and Cats
In the site of Nanluoguxiang, the human activities in the tourist area and residential area have formed a strong contrast. The tourist area takes up a large amount of space and affects the lives of residents. And the living space of ordinary residents has been severely compressed. Meanwhile, the interior is full of threats to wild cats. The relationship between human and cat can be divided into three types: complete tolerance, partial tolerance, and complete opposition. From these three relationships evolved five major spatial relationships.

DEATH ART MUSEUM Design of City Columbarium Site: Chaoyang District, Beijing, China Time: Summer 2019 Tutor: Yuanyuan Li Individual Work
In Chinese funeral culture, death is a taboo word. When someone dies, after a tedious and meaningless funeral ceremony, the deceased is buried far away from the city and rarely mentioned. The memorial and emotional care of funerals and cemeteries themselves have been completely neglected. The design is aimed to break the custom before the traditional culture and treat death as an ordinary life stage, and encourage people to stop confronting it with avoidance.
Collage of Traditional Chinese Funeral Customs
China has a very complex funeral culture. The funeral custom can last for seven days or even three months. But after elaborate burials, the dead are buried far from the city's outskirts. Gradually, visitors become less and less. China's cemeteries generally exist in the form of blind imitation, but the lack of emotional care to a large extent. At the same time, most of them are too far away , inconvenient for transportation and lack of management. A variety of cultural and practical factors have caused the cemetery, death and other words to become reluctant to be mentioned in people's minds.

The witness of prosecution is a tale of reversal. In the movie, the story behind the case is revealed layer by layer. At each level of revelation, it becomes a temporary truth. The scheme follows the perspective of each of the characters in the film, creating a different path. Each line represents the "truth" they are in, and the path they take toward the truth in their hearts. A lot of times people believe what they want to believe, not what they really believe. Every coin has two sides. Most people just want to choose one side.

The term “En Plein Air, ” often associated with 19th-century Impressionist painters, describes a mode of investigation and production that occurs in the open air. Prioritizing the exploration of in-situ realities over the examination of controlled and interiorized “still lives,” and embracing the constant changes in the environment and its inhabitants as critical subject matters, the practice at its inception, while not without its own inherent limitations, was a radical proposition that challenged the established epistemologies and accepted institutions and conventions. As Mallarmé asserted, air was the medium, and the open air was a realm of new truth.

Air sparging is done by injecting large volumes of pressurized air into contaminated soil, removing toxic by tuning them in to vapor. And then the system will expel the air from the ground and send them to the biofiltration system to further purify the air. It’s most commonly used for removing hydrocarbon contaminants. We will apply this to the whole park and we will put it every 10 meters depending on its’ capacity we believe that the soil in the area with lots of pollutants will sink after purification, and eventually form a new landscape It is not only the park that has been dissolved, but we also want to dissolve the right or the power to cover the information and to reveal the violence that remains in the air but we are not able to see. The conflictive and outdated distinction between productive and reproductive labor, its spaces and the bodies that carry them out, have perpetuated social asymmetries based on gender, class, race, age, and body conformity. Space -and by extension architecture and the city- are not neutral and have been extensively used to empower gender binaries and heteropatriarchal behaviors, neglecting wider realities. In a moment of systemic change, this studio will analyze how society defines and regulates bodies through the built environment. Architecture has played a big role within heteropatriarchal societies, in establishing social norms and behaviors, and defining, under the umbrella of an alleged “normality”, a disciplinary system deeply biased and unequal.

The pier was the initial engine of New York's development, and the maritime trade brought the city's initial prosperity. However, grid of the riverfront has long been excluded from the urban fabric of Manhattan. Similarly, after the transfer of pier functions from Manhattan to New Jersey, queer groups occupied the abandoned site in the 1970s. These excluded people and sites from Manhattan actually contributed significantly to cultural and social development and economic prosperity and should be part of the Manhattan grid order. Past fifty years have witnessed huge changes taken place in chelsea. Its gentrification expelled the dynamic indigenous population and turned it into an upscale residential area with a very high rate of vacancy.

this design extend the pier grid to chelsea neighborhood and thus create a ground floor tunnel through existing building, exposing a space like a stage of daily body performance, allowing us to revisit the boundaries and transformation of public and private. This pattern will gradually radiate to other neighborhoods.
Through historical combing, attention to the naked body performance of queers in the 1970s and interviews with the Lgbt center, St. Vincent Hospital is not just for AIDS cure any more. we hope to implant health infrastructure in this neighborhood and make it a mobile community with integrated borders. Accordingly, we defined health as a kind of bodycare, hoping to integrate the existing sports facilities with the desired addition of medical care. In the sections cut by the pier grid, we set up different levels of screening, so that the partially exposed care becomes a body performance again, leading us to think about the physical discipline of the act of care.
