Issey Miyake Garden Type: Garden and Villa Design Date: Fall 2019, Studio V Location: Florence Italy Instructor: Valerio Morabito, Richard Weller

Study Model

Situated next to Boboli Garden in Florence, the Issey Miyake Garden explores contemporary ideas of beauty in honor of Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake. By using fabric to frame the movement of the body and air Miyake redefined the essence of fashion design. Imaging the landscape as fabric, the beauty of the Issey Miyake Garden is not static. This project emphasizes the dynamic tensions between spatial elements and the human body. The design amplifies collision, convergence and transition between different pairings of elements, such as old with new, natural with artificial, indoor and outdoor. Walls, screens and sculptures demarcate the fluidity of space in Issey Miyake’s work, allowing human body to interact with the landscape in unexpected and imaginative ways.

To enhance the visitor’s interactions with the garden, I created a series of landscape walls and stone sculptures for the garden. The menhirs are set out along an invisible axis linking the lower meadow to the lawn and the higher olive grove. Their pleats and textures represent Issey Miyake’s design language and their abstract forms outline voids for the imagination of the visitors. The landscape walls’ forms reinterpret the body-cloth relationship in one dance performance by Issey Miyake and translate this into landscape (body-wall) relationships. They are integrated with functions such as seating and shading.

Down to Earth

Type: Path Design Date: Fall 2017, Foundation Studio I Location: Roxborough, PA Instructor: Rebecca Popowsky

Section Model

The site is a decommissioned reservoir situated between the working-class neighborhood of Roxborough and the Schuylkill River. My concept was to draw people’s attention to things below our foot and to guide them to see and experience the compelling characteristics of the reservoir from different perspectives. So I made a cut into the ground across the reservoir. In reverse to the simplicity of the path, people will have rich visual and tactual experiences along the path owe to the variations of path elevations, width, materials as well as curbs and retaining walls.

The concept Tri-Boro Line was introduced by RPA as an infrastructure investment that directly links the eastern outer boroughs with the existing Manhattan-centric subway system. Based on the study of the Triboro line, this studio elaborates the direct impacts of this potential regional infrastructure on the neighborhoods adjacent to the proposed station stops. We selected the St. Michael’s Cemetery Station in west Queens as our design site. It is almost at the middle point of LGA airport and sunny side yard. Our proposal includes the development of a comprehensive and multi-layer new station and a urban renewal framework for its adjacent area. This is a sustainable urban design project that emphasizes on greater mobility, better access to jobs and opportunities for transit-oriented developments. It reconnects the isolated districts and establishes an accessible network of public realms and amenities, and accommodates the diverse needs coming with the development of Sunnyside Yard and LGA Airport, as well as the rapid expanding Queens borough.

Living With Water

Type: Regional Planning & Large Scale Site Design Date: Fall 2018, Studio III Location: Atlantic City, NJ Instructor: Sean Burkholder, Molly Bourne

Vulerable Community In Atlantic City Base image credit to: David Gard

The inequalities of climate change create strong social divides along New Jersey’s coastal communities; all of which are physically vulnerable to sea level rise. This proposal sets up a strategic framework of smart land use and focusing investments and development on small business, education, green industries and flood protection with the emphasis on the renovation of the boardwalk. In the proposal, Landscape is the bridge to tie tourists, local residents and industries back to the environment. It provides opportunities for a resilient and sustainable development framework.

San Jose Grow

Type: Large Scale Park Design + Urban Design Date: Spring 2020, Studio VI Location: San Jose, CA Instructor: Marcel Wilson, Ryan Buckley, Katy Martin

Historically known as The Valley of Heart’s Delight, San Jose produced a significant amount of fruits and vegetables for nearly two centuries until 1960s.The emergence of tech companies accelerated the urbanization and contributed to the rapid decrease of farmlands. Today, City of San Jose is faced with many social and environmental problems that came along with rapid urbanization, such as food insecurity, lack of public open spaces and homeless issues. This proposal transforms this 238-acre neglected green space next to the San Jose International Airport into a vibrant urban park through promoting a wide range of recreational and agricultural activities in the park. It incorporates careful considerations of reprogramming the park for community, food production, ecology and economic development. It’s not only about the growth of food, but also culture and city. The proposal includes a framework to revitalize the neighborhood and enhance the connection between the park and its surrounding city. The new park circulation follows the form of existing Hargreaves park. It stitches the previous gap between the Guadalupe riverfront and the city fabric in a beautiful, effective and economic way. The mixed-use development includes 1million sq. ft office, and 500,000 sq. ft housing with retail, culture and hotel. The extracted soil from the development of underground parking will be used in the park to as airport noise reduction berms.
