Repurposing the parking structure right next to the LAX airport, we extended the car circulation loop to create new spaces and massing for the mobility research center. The mobility research center focuses on the future commuting strategy and the culture of mobility. The new car track is designed to flow through each program to connect all program with the research results. The massing loop created new spaces in the existing structure for the vertical garden to take place.

The ghetto film school seeks for non traditional ways of learning in film industry, the new balance of the learning environment took place in these overlaying spaces. The soundstages and controlled classrooms, which require higher floor clearance, are set at the ground massing spaces and the courtyard spaces circulated with the primeter of the massing became the supporting programs for this dynamic learning experience. This project with its informal quality created a social landscape for student to interact curriculum in the void and the elevated view of the ground. This project provides a variety ways of learning in the ghetto film school.

The apartment proposal is located in the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. We adopted the bent slab typology and utilizing the quality of materiality. The pairs of soft and rigid slabs are copied and rotated. The resulting posture creates two buildings with a central courtyard condition that extends the existing park space next to the site. The corrugation emphasizes the slab type and generates unique facade conditions and spatial configurations of the units. The ground is elevated to create parking space, retail space, and residential lobby tacked under the blanket surface. The steps descend from the park side to form an amphitheater, creating a theatrical space utilizing the two buildings as an urban backdrop. On the street side of the housing, the ground is “squeezed” out to generate small urban pockets for the public to gather in.

The site is located in the Lincoln Park area, next to the Los Angeles River and the elysian park. The neighborhood is relatively underdeveloped compared to the rest of the city. We took this opportunity to establish urban edges through our housing project.

The amphitheater utilizes the natural condition to use the apartment as the seating of the theater, and the city landsacpe as the stage backdrop.

Applied Study Class

The steel column is bent and rotated to reduce its size visually. As the shape transfromed, the void of the column became the aperture with pot for vegetation. The steel column is formed by a set of bended and welded steel plates that cooperate within each to transfer the direct load. Adding on the handrail detail that extended from the column, a simulation of the column set are acted as the piece to holds up the wood railings. The handrail also served as a blind, created indirect sunlight for the subtleness of the interior. In addition, continuing the architectural flow, the contour of the exterior profile is added to the wood wall.
