WILL YOU I come from the world’s largest rice bowl, China. I named myself Will, not only because of the similar pronunciation of my Chinese name, Wei, but also the wish of becoming a strong-minded Spartan, and find my way. I come to U.S. because my parents, much as the first time riding on my papa’s shoulders to see more. I started my journey in Michigan. Although some idiots count Michigan as Canada, I still love it. However, that is the place where I met my buddies and learned about American culture. Later, I transferred from Michigan State University to Academy of Art University in San Francisco for interior design, because I felt that bigger cities, like San Francisco, will give me more design inspirations. As I felt, I have done many cool projects in college and some freelancing projects in China. Now, I am about to graduate. I can’t wait to use what I learn for this picturesque city to give my client pleasure and sustainable spaces to stay and live.

Early Spring I CONCEPT STATEMENT Unbolting windows and doors, let the early sunshine lit up your room. Eying melting snow run into a stream, let the fresh air dance between your hair. Burying death leaves into the land, and tracing the bunny along furrows. Listening to the birdsong, smelling the flower and grass. Cuddling newborns, and taste the early spring.

So, I end up to mainly use light brown bamboo and black limestone and get Sakura paint and Milky White materials for decoration.

They are famous by their balanced shape and luxurious shine. However, diamonds are not born with geometrical shapes. They need to be shaped carefully and precisely by craftsmen. Presidio of SF I SITE ANALYSIS The National Geographic Bay Area Office project is located in the Presidio of San Francisco, which is a neighbor carries Bay Area’s past and now. Historically, San Francisco is a small village before Spanish exploration. The overland party led by Don Gasper de Portolà, arrived on in 1769. This is the beginning of European colonization in Bay Area. Seven years later, the Spanish established the Presidio of San Francisco as a foothold on California, followed by Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). Later, after Spanish Mexican passed California to United States, the Presidio turns into an active Military Base in 1989. After World War II, it transferred to the National Park Service, ending 219 years of military use and beginning to service as a public and commercial space to benefit the neighborhood. Although time flies and it is not domain by Spanish, the colonial buildings and mission spirits bury exploration, we now have our lovely city San Francisco.

PRESIDIO'S TRANSPORTATION I Site Analysis Main entrance of the building is located on the South side of the building on Owen Street. The fire escape / emergency exit is located North of the building. In terms of requirements and meeting code regulations the two exits need to be available for access in a workplace to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency. The exit routes must also be located as far away as possible in code standard so that in case of emergencies or a fire, employees can exit and evacuate using two different routes.

OPEN OFFICE SPACE I Upper Floor Walk down to the space along the arcade to the left, here comes the open office. This is the editorial stall and design deparment. Most of the people will works in this area. This is the reason why this area located at the south corner of the building, where have the best quality of sunlight. On the other hand, open offices get noisy easily. In order to have a quiet and pleasure space, acoustic title ceiling is applied to the whole space, except the arcade. For furnitue selection, I chose the lower booksheves to divide the arcade and the work space, which bring more solid feeling to the arcade, but still make two spaces be connected.

PRIVATE OFFICE CUBE I Upper Floor This is the appliances and office furniture I chose for the private office space. This system furniture is very flexible and equity in use. At first, the dividers and furniture are easy to install and relocate. Also, it doesn't have high hanging shelving, which handicaps can't reach.

More Importantly, it is softer than hard wood flooring, which prevent terriable injury when seniors fall. Also, it has high fire resisted capability, which gives senior more time to escape when fire emergencies come. Moreover, it enables safe electrostatic discharge through the whole thickness of the title, which helps to prevent electrostatic phenomena in machanical and medicial laboraties by rubbing. TONY RIVIERA I CLIENT PROFILE The client of our high-end food market is Tony Riviera. He wants to open a space in SOMA, which will sell pre-prepared food and carry specialty organic food and sustainable products. In order to attract young professionals and foodie hipsters with high salaries, he will aim for the store to emphasize his high quality products in a classic and classy design. He will try to communicate with his customers in a gentle and elegant way, and give them an approachable and affordable shopping experience. As Tony described, there will be three main areas: a food market, a prepared food area, and a cafĂŠ. I guess Tony would love to have a wine tasting area in the store. He requires open kitchens with walk-in refrigerators and Pizza Ovens for the prepared food area. He also wants a private office, which cannot be seen by his customers and the store should be ADA accessible. Personally, Tony prefers de-saturated colors and geometrical shapes with concrete, wood, and marble finishes, which he believes will give his customers a relax and classy shopping experience.

THE APLS I INSPIRATION The Apls is a pure and clean mountain. It gives me an organic and fresh feelling, which similar to what Tony trys to deliever to his client. So, I decided to create the market design and customized PAG E I 1 3 4 - 1 3 5

Research Notes I CASE STUDY AND

PRACTICE

Before finializing the design and documentary, study about joints and wood species is necessary to accomplish the project. Besides reading books and watching video, I also went out and looked for some real chairs which similar to my project. I studied their design and joints and tried to make CAD drawing for them.

Drafting and CAD Drawing I Documentary After finalizing the design, I started to hand draft the dimensions and joints of my design, and make a full size testing model for review by using cheap poplar wood. During making the model, I decided what kind joints will be suitable for the design. During review, I set up the suitable height and comfortable curve by testing seating. After reviewing, I finished the detail workshop drawing by using AutoCAD. Then, I caculated how much Timber I need, and make sure everything are in 200 USD buget before ordering for the woodyard. Also, I started to make the glue-up order and operation schedule following the experience for making the test model.

Music Room I MARKER RENDERING This is a music room with black wallpaper and green sofa. I added the golden painted drawing frames to decorate the walls. I also placed a rose color chair near the fireplace to contrast with the green sofa, and chose white marble for the fireplace to contrast with the dark wallpaper.

Melting Drink Bar I Ceiling Remodeling This is a real practice I did a years ago in China. I was asked to help my friend to remodel his drink bar in a low buget. I chose "melting" as my concept for the drink bar. I drew the sketches and details. Then, I ordered the materials and hired constructors to finish the project. Although it is a low buget and simple project, I learned a lot, which I will never read from a textbook.
