PREFACE

CONTENTS

Seek among the poetry of architecture Creating a variety of spatial experience for the user is what motivates me the most in my design process. And I often assume myself as a user, trying to walk and observe in a three-dimensional model by a computer so as to optimize the whole construction and space when I feel the space monotonous. During the time I spent in my university I came to realize that the knowledge of civil engineering will allow me to control the whole design process better in the future, although at first I felt that a subject as complex and monotonous as civil engineering was not that suitable for my sentimental disposition ,compared with the interesting subject of architectural design ,which was so varied and fantastic. When I was a sophomore, I learnt a lot of architectural theory courses through library and the Internet, and it was at that time that I became very fascinated with architecture. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

The urban farm Vertical farms&Taste museum individual practice

The project is located at the site of Kunming North Railway Station, aiming at exploring the traditional construction combined with innovative technology in Yunnan. We try to seek opportunities on reconstruction for the over-exploitation industry through the building during social transforming. A cube frame modulus explores the diversity of spatial combination between pure indoor space and semi-outdoor space. The vertical farm was built as the freshest vegetable base with the functions of a city park and a small plant museum, in order to solve the historical problems of the two regions separated by railway for a long time, as well as the lack of understanding of natural crops among the people living in the cities.

SITE ANALYSIS

LEGEND Railway Residence zone Urban road Site scope

The two floating parts are caused by historical reason and the spatial structure of Kunming city. The Building pull the two parts together. We focus on the processes of architectural production that acknowledge people and place. The city is an ecosystem that requires sensitivity to maintain existing systems in a balanced way. So,each one in the three different-term interventions works as a premise for the latter one

We p ro p o s e d a n e w c i t y p ro d u c t i o n co n ce p t a n d a comprehensive urban vertical farm market, but it is much more than just a concept of the vertical farm, which undoubtedly is green urban landscape. The concept is to produce a new urban ecological transition as the industrial city. This productive landscape and the new building will provide new possibilities with humanistic and ecological features and create natural and green spaces for our city.

These plant devices are tailored to the growth characteristics of crops, not only to nurture the plants betterďźŒbut also to make it easier for people to understand the immediate growth status of these crops.

Ornamental plant corridor

Nutient-film technique is a hydroponic method where nutrients are dissolved in a shallow stream and fed to plants through channels .Aeroponic methods grow plants from a frame and suspended in an nutrient rich air-mist.Vine crops(tomatoes, cucumbers et cetera)can be trained on frame or wires to grow in virtually any direction. And these suspended implants allow light to shine from the gaps in the leaves to the floor, creating a wonderful shade of light. People walk along the hallway, on one side of the common food crops, and on the other side of the rare plants displayed in the glass cover.

Islands of Meditation Monastery construction &meditation space individual practice

Meditation is a practice where an individual operates or trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge its content without becoming identified with that content, or as an end in itself. Nowdays people who live in the big cities become too busy and hasty to get time thinking about themselves. whenever getting spare time, they often use their smartphone to play games or chat with friends in the social software.although the Internet make communication easier, feeling of loneliness increase instead. People spent so much time socializing that they don't keep time for themselves.so we craete the space for people who want to do some meditation.

The site is located in Chongqing, a complex city surrounded by tall buildings.

Nestled in the midst of a whole mess of skyscrapers and building sites,

13

It gives one the feeling of being in the scene of ancient Chinese landscape painting.

Chongqing’s Luohan Temple is an escape and an oasis of tranquility in one of China’s most populous, noisiest, and polluted cities.

the temple is named after the 500 clay figures of arhats found in one of the halls.

But all the statues of arhats were destroyed in the war.

There is also a famous vegetarian restaurant in this temple, which attracted many people.

So we put the vegetarian restaurant in a more important position in the reconstruction.

The Construction Process

We try to retain the profound eaves of traditional oriental architecture in order to limit the picture to a narrow view.

so if we use modern building materials(such as concrete),how can we make far-reaching and coherent eaves?

if we use bamboo as the material of construction, how can we do that?

then if we use woods ,how to build the most basic elements?

we also need to give it a platform above the surface of the water,it should be a circle.

what happens if we take out the circle in the middle?

In order to solve the problem of communication and interaction between the villages separated by the river, a bridge was built on both sides to increase the connection between the two villages. And we made use of the corridors on both side of the building to encircle an old tree, which created a better context for tourists to understand local culture and villagers' lives.

Located in Hongguancun, Wuyuan, Jiangxi Province, China, the base is a traditional Huizhou village attached to Gaohu Mountain to the north, and there are 201 households in it. There is also an 1000-year-old tree in the entrance of the village. There are many historical buildings in the village, including 8 buildings in Ming Dynasty and more than 60 buildings in Qing Dynasty. Over 80 percent of traditional Huizhou architectures are well preserved. For the site is by the river, it often serves as a gathering place for the villagers and tourists.

The building consists of four main yards, from north to south, private houses, theatres, yard of tree and yard of river. The first yard is a small yard for private use, where has a staircase leading to the second floor. The second courtyard is an open-air theater for villagers to watch drama. The third courtyard is created for an old tree, and the space around the tree is made into a sunk plaza, where the elderly from villege can sit on the steps and bask in the sun. And the tourists can walk through the corridor or go into the yard to see the centuryold tree. The fourth yard is not a really yard, which is enclosed by a bridge and two parts of the building on both riversides.

concept of fruits 34

When the green pepper was cut apart, I found its profile very interesting, divided into three adjacent large spaces and a small spherical space hanging in the middle of the top. I took inspiration from this spatial relationship and translated it into the space of a modern building, creating a small spa.

Each plant in nature has its own unique structure, and the fruit of the plant has different ways of connecting with the seed and stem. These spaces are very interesting, and I've been wondering if I can translate the spaces that exist in fruits into architectural spaces, such as the relationship between grapes and stems compared to the use of space and separate traffic spaces, the state of the inner capsule of green pepper and the distribution of its seeds, oranges are enclosed by the large space of the pericarp and are linked by complex meridians to each floral pulp, the interesting space formed between the stem and stem of Chinese cabbage and so on.
