opening night Bridegroom
October 4 at 7:30 p.m. • Cinema 21
Directed by Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason • USA • 80 min. We're thrilled to be kicking off the festival this year with an extraordinary documentary! At a time when Oregon is working on getting a marriage equality initiative on the ballot, Bridegroom offers a real-life, concrete case-in-point as to why the legal protections of marriage are a vital necessity to LGBT people. Bridegroom is the emotional story of Shane and Tom, two young men who meet, fall in love, build a life together and vow to get married if gay marriage is legalized. Their relationship is cut tragically short when Tom suddenly dies. The story of what happens after this accidental death – of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out and ostracized– is poignant, enraging and opens a window onto the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever could. On the anniversary of Tom’s death, after a year of documenting his own grief, Shane made a video tribute to his partner. This film, posted on YouTube, has received over 3.4 million views and has been translated into over 20 different languages. Bridegroom is inspired by this video. Opening Night Gala at 23Hoyt, NW 23rd & Hoyt. Sponsored by 23Hoyt, New Deal Vodka and Bill Dickey and Morel Ink.
Shane Bitney Crone will be in attendance at the screening and Opening Night Gala Party Shane Bitney Crone grew up with the nickname “Motor Mouth.” Now that name seems even more appropriate in light of his recent YouTube video, which went viral with over three million hits. Shane is the subject of Bridegroom, a film that portrays the many injustices he experienced after losing his partner and the great love of his life, Tom Bridegroom. This gut-wrenching documentary has now inspired people worldwide and become a rallying cry to join Shane’s pursuit of marriage equality.

The Falls: Testament of Love
Directed by Bruno Barreto• Brazil • In English • 118 minutes
Directed by Jon Garcia • USA • 117 minutes
October 12 at 8:00 p.m. • Cinema 21
We end the festival this year with a gorgeous period piece set in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s provides the stunning backdrop for Reaching for the Moon, which chronicles the passionate yet tempestuous love affair between Pulitzer prize-winning American poet, Elizabeth Bishop, and Brazilian architect, Lota de Macedo Soares. Frustrated by her inexplicable inability to weave words where it once seemed effortless, Bishop accepts an invitation from her old college friend to spend some time at a luxurious country estate in Rio. Despite feeling painfully out of place in her bohemian surroundings, Bishop gradually begins to relax in the company of her friend's partner, socialite de Macedo Soares. The shy, repressed Bishop is initially put off by the forthright and dashing architect but the quickly-deepening relationship soon unleashes a flood of creativity in her. Director Bruno Barreto (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands) has crafted an engaging, classic love story of two larger-than-life artists that offers an intimate snapshot of their search for inspiration.

The Falls: Testament of Love is the sequel to last year's festival hit, The Falls. Shot in Portland with a local cast and crew, this sequel to the beloved and bittersweet The Falls picks up five years after the doomed romance between Mormon missionaries RJ and Chris. Though their lives have taken radically different paths, the death of a mutual friend unexpectedly reunites the two men at a time when both are attempting to establish their adult lives. As old feelings of attraction and regret are rekindled, RJ and Chris must once again confront their seemingly impossible love. Will their reunion prove that they're fated to be together, or is it merely a temporary fantasy? Director Jon Garcia and stars Nick Ferrucci and Benjamin plus cast and crew in attendance Jon Garcia's films include The Falls, Tandem Hearts and The Falls: Testament of Love. In addition to filmmaking, Jon is an accomplished musician and has released two studio albums, his 2006 Self-titled debut, and 2010's "The Lake." Nick Ferrucci is originally from Puyallup, Washington. While growing up, he fell in love with entertaining friends and family. He holds an MFA in Acting from Northern Illinois University and a BFA in Theatre from Southern Oregon University. Nick spent a season at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a summer studying with the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. Benjamin Farmer has studied at The American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City. His screen credits include roles in Matt McCormick's Some Days are Better Than Others, Jared Yanez's The Roomies, and on TNT's "Leverage."

Before You Know It
The New Black
Directed by PJ Raval • USA • 110 minutes
Directed by Yoruba Richen • USA • 80 minutes
October 6 at 4:00 p.m. • Cinema 21 The subjects of Before You Know It are no ordinary senior citizens. They are go-go booted bar-hoppers, love struck activists, trouble making baton twirlers, late night Internet cruisers, seasoned renegades and bold adventurers. They are also among the estimated 2.4 million lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans over the age of 55 in the United States, many of whom face heightened levels of discrimination, neglect and exclusion. Portlander Dennis (pictured above on the Hawthorne Bridge) is a gentle-hearted widower in his 70s who begins exploring his sexual identity and fondness for dressing in women’s clothing under the name “Dee.” Ty is an impassioned LGBT activist who hears nothing but wedding bells once gay marriage passes in New York. Robert “The Mouth” is a feisty bar owner who presses on when his neighborhood institution comes under threat. Born before the Civil Rights era, these men have witnessed unbelievable change in their lifetimes. Before focuses on the lives of these three gay seniors, but reminds us that while LGBT elders face a specific set of issues, aging and its challenges are universal. Director PJ Raval and Dennis Creamer will be in attendance Named one of Out Magazine’s “Out 100" in 2010 and Filmmaker Magazine's "25 new faces of independent film 2006," PJ Raval is an award-winning filmmaker whose credits include Trinidad, The Christeene video collection, and Before You Know It, his latest documentary. Also an award-winning cinematographer, Raval’s work has earned him several awards including an Academy Award-nomination for Trouble the Water. In his spare time Raval likes to try to take small naps and pretend he knows ballet.

The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of how the AfricanAmerican community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda. The New Black takes viewers into the pews and onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as it tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland and charts the evolution of this divisive issue within the black community.

Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth
The Trouble with Barry
deepsouth
What’s the T? is a documentary that explores the challenges, successes, and lives of five transgender/transsexual women. These women represent normality and abnormality, seamlessly, in their daily efforts to achieve a balance of feminine and masculine, as the day may require. They are beyond and within the stereotypical male-to-female story that has been told before.
Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth tells the compelling story of an extraordinary woman’s journey from her birth in a paper-thin shack in cotton fields of Putnam County, Georgia to her recognition as a key writer of the 20th Century. Alice Walker made history as the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her ground breaking novel, The Color Purple, which has been transformed from a novel, to a Hollywood movie and latterly to a successful Broadway musical. This universal story of triumph against all odds is not that different from Walker’s own story.
Barry Montenegro (Peter Stickles) is a reckless, drunk, and embarrassingly unprofessional actor living in Hollywood, California. Despite an auspicious, promising start in brooding Indies, Barry's subsequent career took a ten-year nose dive due to a series of drug busts, sex scandals, notorious on-set antics, and a general disregard for anyone and everything around him. Now destitute and homeless, Barry's last chance is a role on a zero-budget web series called I Love the Nightlife a shameless rip-off of Saturday Night Fever with an oblivious egomaniac (Eric Dean) at the helm, and starring ex-erotic thriller Pussy Johnson (Rena Riffel). But when someone begins brutally butchering members of the cast and crew one-by-one, all eyes turn to Barry. Is he the killer? Or is he just a dick?
deepsouth is a documentary about the rural American South, and the people who inhabit its quietest corners. Beneath layers of history, poverty – and now soaring HIV infections – four Americans redefine traditional Southern values to create their own solutions to survive.

This film is not about middle-aged husbands wrangling strained marriages for the sake of identity. It's not about teenagers looking for identity or toddlers embraced by progressive families. Born in 1944, eighth child of sharecroppers, her early life unfolded in the midst of violent racism and poverty during some of the most turbulent years of profound social and political changes in North American history. Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth is a penetrating look at the life and art of an artist, a self-confessed renegade and human rights activist.

Continental
October 6 • 8:00 p.m • Cinema 21 Directed by Malcolm Ingram USA • 92 minutes Malcolm Ingram (small town gay bar) returns with a new documentary that takes viewers back to sexually-charged NYC 1968, when the notorious Continental Baths opened its doors. This ground-breaking den of debauchery transcended sexuality and became a beacon to the hip, beautiful and infamous. The Continental brought high and low culture to its cabaret stage weekly, becoming instrumental in the careers of icons like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle and many others. The film tells the tale of a keystone in the sexual revolution that contributed to a level of mainstream gay acceptance and sexual freedoms, the likes of which has never been seen since. Continental is an engrossing account of an establishment that could only have existed in the pre-AIDS bubble of the 1970s – with primo lounge acts performing for a diverse cross-section of New Yorkers up front while gay men got it on in the liberating sexual playground out back. director malcolm ingram in attendance

Change Over Time by Ewan Duarte An animated, experimental, personal documentary about the filmmaker’s first year on testosterone.
Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia
Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?
No twentieth-century figure has had a more profound effect on the worlds of literature, film, politics, historical debate, and the culture wars than Gore Vidal. Anchored by intimate one-on-one interviews with the man himself, Nicholas Wrathall’s new documentary is a fascinating and wholly entertaining portrait of the last lion of the age of American liberalism.
As another birthday rolls around, fortyyear-old filmmaker Anna (played by the director) returns to her never-changing list of resolutions: lose twenty pounds, get a girlfriend, and direct a feature film. Imagine Liz Lemon, if she were a lesbian cinéaste with a dash of Cuban blood in her. This year, Anna plans to knock (at least) two of those resolutions out with one stone, as she begins writing a lesbian remake of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, devised to win the affections of her leading lady, Katia (Janina Gavankar of “The L-Word”). With Anna planning to act opposite her beautiful crush, her two best friends, Penelope (Go Fish’s Guinevere Turner) and Chloe (“True Blood”’s Carrie Preston), round out the four-person cast. Unfortunately, things don’t run smoothly, as egos begin to clash and crew members start sleeping with one another. Will Anna go yetanother year without accomplishing any of her resolutions? From the co-writer of Saved!, Who's Afraid of Vagina Wolf? is a hysterical behind-the-scenes comedy, with a sexy, funny cast (look for Drew “Chloe Sevigny” Droege in a cameo role). - Frameline

Commentary by those who knew him best—including filmmaker/nephew Burr Steers and the late Christopher Hitchens—blends with footage from Vidal’s legendary on-air career to remind us why he will forever stand as one of the most brilliant and fearless critics of our time. Gore Vidal’s professional life spans more than 50 years of American politics and letters. His return to America in 2005 marked the last great stage in his creative career and this film represents an extraordinary opportunity to share his view on America in the twenty-first century. Featuring candid vérité footage of Vidal in his final years, the film explores his enduring global impact on art, politics, and everything in between.

Breaking Through
Free Fall
Ian Harvie: Superhero
Pit Stop takes a subtle and eloquent approach in telling the parallel stories of two gay men in a small Texas town. Gabe is a contractor getting over an ill-fated affair with a married man and finds solace in the relationship he still harbors with his ex-wife, Shannon and their daughter. Ernesto's a lumber yard worker in the middle of splitting up with his live-in boyfriend, Luis, as he receives news from the hospital that his former love, Martin, is in a coma. Far from the gay centers of the world, director Yen Tan explores the complex and often forgotten lives of gay men in small-town America. When Gabe and Ernesto meet for a one-nighter – having endured struggles and heartbreaks and wondering if they’ll ever find love again – they face the possibility that they might just be meant for each other.
Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown (pictured above) and Supreme Court Justices Rives Kistler and Virginia Linder, are among the many openly-gay politicians who share their stories in the insightful documentary Breaking Through. Openly LGBT elected officials at all levels and from across the country - including the first gay US Senator, Tammy Baldwin tell their stories of self-doubt and triumph over multiple barriers ranging from race and poverty to gender and sexual orientation, revealing a deeply personal, rarely-seen side of politicians and LGBT people. Despite difficulties, they beat the odds and now serve openly and effectively. But how did they achieve their goals, and at what personal cost? In Breaking Through, political leaders reveal why they were compelled to run for public office and how they faced and overcame fear, stereotypes and personal attacks. scheduled to appear: director cindy l. abel, dp michael bruno, oregon sec. of state kate brown and oregon
With a promising law enforcement career and a child on the way, Marc’s life is all going according to plan until he meets the free spirited Kay. Marc is shaken to the core when he meets Kay on a training course and begins to develop feelings for him. When Kay asks to be transferred to Marc’s unit, the latter’s well-arranged life begins to sink into chaos. Torn between his love for his pregnant girlfriend Bettina and the rush of a completely new experience, his life spins increasingly out of control. He soon finds himself estranged more and more from his family, but running away with Kay is not an option. Then one day Kay disappears without warning and leaves no forwarding address. It dawns on Marc that his absence has ripped a gaping hole in his life. With his situation in free fall, Marc can no longer satisfy everyone's expectations - least of all his own. Free Fall is part of a new wave of powerful German cinema. As director Stephan Lacant’s first feature film, Free Fall tells the dramatic tale of a man who finds himself outside the clear-cut boundaries of his world.
Ian Harvie’s debut stand-up comedy concert film, Superhero, is the culmination of his very personal journey of having been born a girl and later becoming a selfmade man. It’s Ian’s facile sense of ease, not just his gender-bending presence that makes his humor ground breaking; and has lead him to make history on more than one occasion. It’s these very qualities that attracted the notorious Margaret Cho to publicly rave about Ian’s work and have him as her opening act for years. Ian is ‘quite possibly the most unique comic in the country’ says Frontiers Magazine and yet his jokes strike the core of all shared human experiences.

Equal parts candor and deadpan humor, Ian’s distinctive matter-of-fact delivery and almost surreal anecdotes about the intricacies of his exceptional life are so full of humanity that they become universal. Ian’s observations about genderspecific societal codes, privilege, coming out twice, and learning new bathroom etiquette, will have you peeing your pants and wanting Ian in attendance to check your neighbor’s pants to see what’s inside. Ian is the world’s first FTM (female-tomale) transgender comic, put in context, make his anecdotes about his own phobia of public rest rooms all the more side-splitting. Ian’s performance makes you think and wonder, but most importantly, it makes you laugh.
Five Dances
Heterosexual Jill
G.B.F.
Geography Club
The classic tale of finding success and romance in the big city is given a contemporary, and unconventional, spin in Alan Brown’s new film, Five Dances. Collaborating with internationally renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer, writer-director Brown has taken five gifted New York dancers, and fashioned a story about Chip (Ryan Steele), an extraordinarily talented 18 year-old recently arrived from Kansas who joins a small downtown modern dance company. In his first weeks of rehearsal, Chip is initiated into the rites of passage of a New York dancer’s life, where discipline and endless hard work, camaraderie and competitiveness, the fear of not being good enough, and the joy of getting it just right, inform every minute of every day.
Unable to make progress with her ex-lesbian conversion path, a neurotic "All American" Jill tracks down her butch ex-girlfriend Jamie (Michelle Ehlen) to prove to herself that she is no longer attracted to her. Strung along by guilt and desire, Jamie agrees to the preposterous plan of "dating" Jill so that Jill can close this chapter of her life and move forward with men. Meanwhile, David and Lola compete for the affections of José , a sexually ambiguous and seductive man from Brazil, and they compare notes on their differing opinions of his sexuality. As complications arise with Jill and Jamie's relationship, Jill starts to see José as her ticket out. However, when the love triangles shift and realign, Jamie has her own identity crisis that she is ill-equipped to handle. A mix of over-thetop comedy, sharp wit, and pathos, Heterosexual Jill rides the edge of laughter and pain, desire and repression, and explores the complicated attachment to one's sense of self in the face of love.
The bitter fight for supremacy between the three most popular girls at North Gateway High takes an unexpected turn when their classmate, Tanner, is outed and becomes the school’s first openly gay student. The trio races to bag the big trend in fashion accessories, the Gay Best Friend, while Tanner must decide whether his skyrocketing popularity is more important than the friendships he is leaving behind.
High school students of varying sexual orientations form an after-school group in search of support and solidarity in this adolescent comedy drama based on Brent Hartinger's best-selling young adult novel of the same name. Sixteen-year old Russell is still going on dates with girls while having a secret relationship with football quarterback Kevin, who will do anything to prevent his football teammates from finding out. Min and Terese tell everyone that they're just really good friends. And then there's Ike who can't figure out who he is or who he wants to be. Finding the truth too hard to hide, they all decide to form the Geography Club, thinking nobody else in their right mind would ever want to join. However, their secrets may soon be discovered and they could have to face the choice of revealing who they really are. Featuring Alex Newell from TV's "Glee" and starring Cameron Stewart (Pitch Perfect), Ana Gasteyer (SNL, Mean Girls), Scott Bakula (American Beauty, "Quantam Leap," Men of a Certain Age).

Darren Stein returns for another comic send-up of high school clique culture, backed by memorable appearances by Megan Mullally, Natasha Lyonne, Jonathan Silverman and Rebecca Gayheart. The film inverts the high school angst of John Hughes, Mean Girls and Easy A, placing a man at the heart of a storyline that ably mixes the tongue-in-cheek with the tenderhearted. Along the way, G.B.F. offers a salient commentary on popularity, on what is and is not revealed on the rise to the top, on the value placed on those who help you get there and what happens when that value is far less than people are worth.
