ABOUT THE UNIT Process and collaboration

Starting the first unit of my sophomore year of university, I went into this unit with a goal. Personally speaking, this is not only significant to me but also opens for constant improvement. My aim is to better understand the design process during the collaboration. Also, I want to learn about the systems within design since this is the main part of the unit. Reading this book is just like taking a journey. Through the experiences, I went through in the first unit. Once the unit is completed, I hope to reflect on the overall unit and see whether my learning aim has been achieved.

Visual Synthesis Assignment 1 For this project you are required to create a portrait of the AUB campus.

You will be working in small groups to map, analyse and recreate the data systems of your surroundings within a set of synthesised visual systems. You will be encouraged to think innovatively about how you might find and generate data and

analyse systems in the creation of new work. Work in groups to map the campus. Break down the map as modular elements to cover the whole of AUB. Think beyond the obvious attribute that you might include. Consider time, wind, human behaviour, sound, movement, etc.

1.1 Map and select The first step was to simplify the brief and make it easier to understand for every memebers of our group and know what should we do, why should we do this. So we had a meeting to disscus the brief and enter on the porject!

Investigation We got one hundred student from diiferent course to answer a questionnaire about their mood, stress levels, creativity and the level of natural light in their classroom. The more inveatigation sample, the more accutate, that is why we got one hundred, and if we wanna collect more data to count, the questinnaire is the best choice.

Idea analyse The benefits of natrual light Humans are affected both psychologically and physiologically by the different spectrums provided by the various types of light. These effects are the less quantifiable and easily overlooked benefits of daylighting. Daylighting has been associated with improved mood, enhanced morale, lower fatigue, and reduced eyestrain. One of the important psychological aspects from daylighting is meeting a need for contact with the outside living

environment (Robbins 1986).

According to Dr. Ott (Ott Biolight Systems, Inc. 1997a), the body uses light as a nutrient for metabolic processes similar to water or food. Natural light stimulates essential biological functions in the brain and is divided into colors that are vital to our health. On a cloudy day or under poor lighting conditions, the inability to perceive the colors from light can affect our mood and energy level. Dr.

Liberman (1994) also mentioned that light plays a role in maintaining health: When we speak about health, balance, and physiological regulation, we are referring to the function of the body’s major health keepers; the nervous system and the endocrine system.

These major control centers of the body are directly stimulated and regulated by light, to an extent far beyond what modern science‌has been willing to accept.

Daylighting in Schools School children and teachers can benefit from integrating and managing daylight properly.

Reported benefits include reduced utility costs for school districts, improved student attendance

and academic performance, and a less stressful environment for students.

A Daystar article, “Benefits of Natural Daylighting�

(1998), states that there is increased student and teacher attendance,

increased achievement rates, reduced fatigue factors, improved student health, and enhancement of general development.

Furthermore, natural lighting eliminates noise and flickering from electric light sources and provides the best quality of light available in classrooms, gymnasiums, and corridors. Other research has shown that students in windowless classrooms are more hostile, hesitant, and maladjusted.

Also, students in windowless classrooms tend to be less interested in their work and complain more.

Health Daylight has physiological and psychological benefits for teachers and students.

Thomas Benton, principal of the daylit Durant Road Middle School in Wake County, North Carolina, claims that teachers who have been at his school for more than a year mentioned that they feel better mentally and physically (Bailey 1998). Physiological benefits due to daylight on school children are less dental decay (cavities), improved eyesight, increased growth, and improved immune system.

The sun is a primary source of vitamin D, and increasing vitamin D intake stimulates calcium metabolism (see also Affects of Light on Internal Body Systems). There is a strong correlation 17 between the amount of sunlight a child is exposed to and the level of dental decay, making daylighting a very important element for cavity prevention in children. Reports show that

Eyes collect and convert visible light into electrical impulses called photocurrents (Ott Biolight Systems, Inc. 1997b). These photocurrents flow through the optic nerves to the brain. Studies at University of California– Berkley Laboratories suggest that light sources with richer spectral content provide more usable light to the eye. Daylight provides the richest spectral, usable light, and it eases some of the stress to the eye.

Circles of varying sizes were used to represent different courses while the size of the circle was a function of the level of the respondent's creativity, and the position of these course was based on our campus map, The intensity was based on the reported level of stress.

Critical evaluation The visual synthesis was the first project of visual system.

And this was my second teamwork in which I chose to be in a team with shuya， james， henrikka.

Our team did a good job on cooperation as everyone has his or her own role in our team. We had a clear work distribution and cooperated with each other pleasantly.

Shuya did a lot of work on this project as she had the initial thoughts of window and the natural light. She was a good patner. As the only British in our team, James gave us a lot of enlightening

thoughts. Hendrikka was a super nice person who had some experience of video so we left the task of making the videos to him. At the beginning, I didn’t provide with some ideas. But later, I actively beard some tasks and put up my thoughts.

We had a very smooth start with lots of thoughts and investigations. Later, we got stunk and didn’t know how to carry on the work.

And as last, we only had one day to make the final exhibition. It was a pity that we didn’t have a good video as we were expected. But

I was really happy because I liked our concept of the work as we made a good combination of the data we had investigated. We visualized the data and used the line direction of the data to equip the music, which was our characteristic. If only we could concentrate more on the final work.

This project help me understand the importance of cooperation and every team member should capitalize on their best part to do the distributed work to maximize the efficiency.

Critical evaluation Industry visits was the second program. It was my pleasure to visit the thinking juice in this program and during which I got some new understandings of the graphic design. Their related answers to my questions of this industry gave me further understanding of this industry. And this program made me know the team cooperation. The corporate is a team then it’s important to let the team members play a better role in the team. As a large cooperation

program, each branch of the small program in visual system needs cooperating.

It not only provided me with knowledge of the graphic design but also how to make communication in cooperation. It is important to understand that it’s not only the patient who suffers they can often be blissfully unaware in many cases. It is the surrounding loved ones and care workers.

This is why understanding, comfort and customised care and independence are so important.

Dementia

Dementia is a common condition. Your risk of developing dementia increases as you get older, and the condition usually occurs in people over the age of 65.

Dementia is a syndrome (a group of related symptoms) associated with an ongoing decline of the brain and its abilities. This includes problems with: memory loss thinking speed mental agility language understanding

judgement People with dementia can become apathetic or uninterested in their usual activities, and have problems controlling their emotions.

They may also find social situations challenging, lose interest in socialising, and aspects of their personality may change.

A person with dementia may lose empathy (understanding and compassion), they may see or hear things that other people do not (hallucinations), or they may make false claims or

statements.

As dementia affects a person's mental abilities, they may find planning and organising difficult.

Maintaining their independence may also become a problem. A person with dementia will therefore usually need help from friends or relatives, including help with decision making.

Your GP will discuss the possible causes of memory loss with you, including dementia. Other symptoms can include:

increasing difficulties with tasks and activities that require concentration and planning depression changes in personality and mood periods of mental confusion difficulty finding the right words Most types of dementia can't be cured, but if it is detected early there are ways you can slow it down and maintain mental function.

Only 40% of people with dementia receive a formal diagnosis.

One third of people with dementia live in care homes, whilst two thirds live in the community (Alzheimer's Society,2015)

Conclusion

There is often a dissociation between what the professionals and residents of such developments want(Godwin,2014).

The residents; voice on their design preferences

was consistent with existing dementia friendly design guidelines suggestions (e.g. colour, landmarks).

Other environments used by older adults need to designed in a supportive way.

However we thought about doing this through sound hubs that could be places anywhere using touch screens and album covers of past generational music for patients to visually recognise and use and enjoy with no confusion.

3.2 Final Outcome The aim of our idea is to be able to allow certain dementia sufferers to be able to navigate their own ways

Our idea is not aimed at those whose condition is not severe but they do struggle with finding their ways or remembering certain aspects of everyday living.

We aimed at creating something that could be quickly implemented at all care home facilities as well as cities in general in the future to better improve and diversify the lives of sufferers young and old alike.

Our concept is to better improve and diversify the patients residing within these homes, both that tend well to their specialist needs and

those that are still lacking or misplacing guidance.

This could be how the issue is misunderstood through expected lack of intelligence, rather than discomfort, unease, memory loss and above all miscommunication.

Most dementia sufferers excluding family and friends of the patient are of older generations from a variety of personalities, backgrounds and upbringings that should all be subtly catered for and welcomed into their customised and personal environment. Additionally suffers can be of all ages and

other illnesses fall in a similar perception such as extreme paranoia, anxiety or even some minor cases of PDSD and Schizophrenia.

A creative social Hub is where we go to with this.

Offering records, books, films to keep or borrow as well as an educational information centre where they could be helped to buy new clothes online or learn helped to write letters to loved ones.

Again an open Hub that once implemented will see it’s required direction adapt and change.

The AI is an app for the apple watch which is worn on the arm of the resident. From our research we have learnt that people diagnosed with dementia can begin to understand simple tasks if practiced regularly. Using simple image based graphics to identify which location the individual would like to go the app links via Bluetooth to led lights imbedded in the floor of the care home. Depending on which button they press colours will light up as they walk to direct the user to their chosen location.

Critical evaluation Wayfinding was the third program.

Through helping the people with dementia to do wayfinding and encourage them to live on themselves, I understood that we need a comprehensive concerns for the patients on undertaking such program. For example, we need to understand this disease and get to know that they really need. Through such kinds of methods we could make the humanitarian design. I chose Shuya, Liam and Ryan as my teammates.

But the cooperation was not ideal as we didn’t cooperate well with each

other. At first, each of us came up with many ideas. As we didn’t know how to choose, then we combined our thoughts together. Then we began to share out the work. We wanted to make a dynamic video previously. Due to the limited time, we made some dynamic pictures to show our design. We didn’t have a comprehensive concerns for the patients for the total evaluation part which gained many questions to our work. As for the improvement of the work, I think we should use an easier design method to provide with a more convenient wayfinding.

Industry is the fourth project of visual system , and I think it is the most important project in the system. The project Industry allows us to have a general understanding of industry.

With regard to cooperation, this time I chose to work with Shuya to complete this project. Because we are all Chinese people ,it will be more convenient for us to communicate. But there is still a drawback, we can’t conceive better ideas,because we are all chinese people , we tend to think similarly.

However,people in different country tend to conceive much more interesting ideas.At this time ,we divided works into reasonable parts and cooperate with each other quite well. We had a

pleasant cooperation, we spared no effort to do this project, and spent a lot of time on thinking about how to do this project better.

With regard to the project, according to our investigation we made some analysis about which method will attract more young customers and how to make it more various after we finished collecting the information .

We tried to expand our ideas to all aspects but not limited only to the small parts.After the personal counseling by stew ,we reorganized our thoughts.

We have come out that inviting 22 artists for the 22 different shop image design, and launched the activity that collecting 22 gift boxes for tailor-

This is not just to attract customers to participate in our activities, but also to expand the diversification of the brand.

There must be one that you like within the 22 different styles by 22 different designers.At the same time, in order to make the teachers and students understand our sales model better, we use a web page form to simulate one of the 22 designers to introduce our model.We chose the designer of Shuan the sheep ——Nick Park to simulate our activities. From then,I think our ideas will be understand and presented better.

With regard to the speech, we attached special importance, and kept constant

rehearsals to ensure nice perform.We were the last group of the four to go for the speech ,the first three groups performed quite well and their ideas were particularly good, from their ideas we began to reflect on our own ones about where and how to improve.We are especially pleased after the speech, we heard stew say that our idea is best one, especially the idea about the cooperation with artists. But if we can get the speech more clearly,it will be much better.

With regard to the improvement, after hearing the teacher's feedback we realized that we may be focused too much on shop running without paying attention on how to help customers to

participate in this activity ,and we didn’t give relative examples on how to collect the box and how to exchange for the tailor-made design of the chocolate.

We failed to give comprehensive introduction but just a word ,so the teachers may still not understand our activity model well, this is what we need to improve.

Generally speaking I spare no effort on this project, it is the best project i ever like, we should get more experiences so that we will consider more comprehensively and perfect on designing things .

Tutorial record Briony gave me a lot of useful advises, she told me that I should print a draft to check the font size and the color for reading. And I have so many type of column to use, We should use 2 or 3 types to use. And some gorgeous layout design I can use agin in the other page. Thank you for taking the time to read my journey book for this unit’s assignments!

I am going to make a summary about overall, This book mainly tells a story about the process, reflection and final outcome of five projects. The visual system helped me to improve how I approach to projects. I am enjoy so much for this unit. In the unit my aim is to better understand the design process during the collaboration. Also, I want to learn about the systems within design since this is the main part of the unit.

This is the first time I designed the

whole book. This is not just a layout problem. It is more of a challenge that tests us how to plan our projects. How to more clearly present the process of doing the project is very important.

This unit helps me understand the importance of cooperation and every team member should capitalize on their best part to do the distributed work to maximize the efficiency.

And I understood that we need a comprehensive concerns for every project.

With regard to the improvement, I think I should improve my

presentation skill, sometimes I got nice idea but I can not express very well, and also need to improve my writing skills, so that the content of the book will be more abundant. And I should develop my work after feedback, but I do not have enough time to do this part so I gave up. Finally, There is an important thing I need to improve, I should find a better way to document my design process .

In the future project, I will find a good method to record my process, and develop my presentation skills, keep punching.
