Local Athletes Ready For Busy Spring Sports Slate

By Erick Peterson GRANGER Dave Pearson, Granger High School athletics director, said that his school is solid heading into the spring. Now in his fourth year as athletics director, he is enthusiastic about the teams. Boys Soccer Pearson said that he is optimistic about the soccer team, which should be excellent under the leadership of Coach Alejandro Ortiz. Ortiz said that he has set the bar high for the team. “Our expectation is to battle for the league championship,” he said. “We have set high expectations for the team this year. We have a group of kids who are more experienced and ready to take our team to the next level. We are working hard at practice every day, and we take games one game at a time. We know that we must work hard to compete in our league.” This year’s team will feature a few standout athletes, according to Ortiz. “Hector Franco is one of our captains and a player who has been nominated for league first team since he was a freshman,” he said, “He continues to provide the team with leadership and guidance during games. “Misael Franco, his younger brother, is our creative force and a player that provides leadership and defensive skills in the middle.

“Freddy Sojo, our main forward, brings aggressiveness and goals to the team. We hope he has a great season.” “Javier Chavez and Ramiro Castillo both bring much-needed speed to our offense. They provide the team with great skills on the wings and great shot-taking abilities from outside the 18-foot range,” the coach said. “We have a well-rounded squad that we hope can help the team have a great season.” He said that the team has strengths that include experience. “Our students have a better understanding of what it takes to be a well-rounded student athlete,” he said. “Students understand the importance of keeping their grades up and working hard inside and outside the classroom to achieve our goals.” But this is not the end of his goals. “Our goal this year is to defeat both Wahluke and Highland away and at home,” he said. “If we accomplish this goal that will set the tone for our season.” Baseball Despite difficulty in recent years and a loss in the team’s first game, the athletics director thinks that players have potential to pull off some big wins this year. “Baseball’s been a struggle the last few years in terms of getting kids out and as far as being competitive on the field,” Pearson said. That said, he sees signs of improvement. Players look committed and improving. Fast-pitch With a big turnout, the Granger fast-pitch squad should be good, Pearson said. At the very least, the large number of players will allow the school to field a junior varsity team, which will provide opportunities to several developing athletes. “This allows us to build a program,” he said. “We can have young kids get some games without throwing them to the wolves of varsity-level players.” Coach Jaime Vasquez has her own expectations for the team and plans. “Our main focus is to improve every game as a team,” Vasquez said. “Our team consists of mainly freshman and sophomores, so my hope is that by mid season, we can start competing for a district playoff spot. Top athletes include Kayla Cardenas, who started every game as pitcher last year; three-year starter and left fielder Ritz Reyes; and first

both boys and girls tennis teams. “As far as the girls go, we have some returners that we’re expecting big things from,” he said. “A couContinued on page 2

wins are created by the good play and teamwork of multiple players, not a couple of big stars. Baseball Stauffer said that this baseball season will be interesting, as the team has a new coach. “He brings a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge about the game,” Stauffer said. But it is not just the new coach that makes the team worth watching. He said that the team is fielding some excellent talent, even beyond what fans have seen in recent years. “We’re still pretty young and inexperienced but we’re looking to be more competitive this year,” he said. this year. “When that many kids come out, you know that the coaches are doing something right,” Stauffer said. “And these kids are looking to get out there, run and compete.” Boys and Girls Golf A new coach is heading Toppenish’s golf program this year, and he will oversee the development of the eight boys and eight girls who turned out for this season’s team. “We’re looking for the girls to do really well,” Stauffer said. Of the two teams, this is the one with more experience, including athletes who have been to state competition. WAPATO Sheila Holter, Wapato High School athletics director and assistant principal, is in her first year. Already, however, she said that she feels positive about her sports programs. Last winter, she said, was remarkable because of the large number of fans who came out to support the teams. Support for teams was high, and fans were rewarded by some outstanding athleticism that included a regionals playoff run by the boys basketball team. She has met excellent coaches and players for spring sports, and she feels confident that they will produce winning seasons.

Boys Soccer Just ahead of the team’s first game, Holter said that she was impressed with the enthusiasm that she saw among players. A large number of boys turned out for this year’s soccer team, much more than the last few years, she said. This was a good sign. Those kids are performing well in practice, and The Toppenish track team had a big turnout for 2014, which leads coaches to believe are being led by that this will be a successful year. strong coaches looking forward to his kids doing There have been some changes to who are drilling great things over the next few years.” look out for this year, according to them in solid, fundamental play. This involves creating a set of expectations for the team. “My expectation for the season is to see that every young lady is mentally and fundamentally sound and is ready to compete at a level that they are not used too,” he said. The team may be without stars, but not without talent. He said that they have potential to achieve. “At this time we do not have any standout athletes, he said. “We have a long way to go before we start looking at the individual. That will come soon. These young ladies are hungry for the knowledge about the game and are eager to learn the proper ways of the game. “At this moment, we have two seniors. One played last year and the other is a transfer into the district, he said. “Basically, we are very young and I have spent the last three weeks trying to break a lot of bad habits,” said the coach. “This season is going to be a work in progress. Every game is going to be a challenge. The CWAC is one of the strongest leagues in the state of Washington. Right now the state champion comes out of our league and there are a few other teams that have finished in the top five over the past few years and they make life miserable for the rest of us.”

Boys and Girls Tennis Expect more of the same excellence this year from the tennis teams, according to Holter. “Boys and girls tennis are traditionally strong programs at Wapato High School,” Holter said. “Once again, Coach (Mark) Villegas has large numbers of kids turning out.” These kids are now practicing on the school’s new tennis courts, which are part of upgraded sports facilities. She said that these new courts are not quite complete, but they are playable and work after the season will strengthen playing surfaces and add storage. Coach Villegas indicated that things could go right for the team this year, but players have much to overcome. “We have a very inexperienced team this season,” he said. “Many of our players are playing at the varsity level this year and they’re seniors. They really don’t have a lot of varsity experience. “The girls should be competitive and hopefully we will improve throughout the season. Our boys team has some pretty good juniors but they need to improve quickly if we’re going to have any success this season.” Boys and Girls Track With 80 kids turning out for track, Holter also feels confident about that program. Out of this large

group, there are likely to be many standouts. “We’re looking at having several state placers, we hope,” she said. Brian Hake, track coach, said that he is also pleased with the team as he enters the season. “We are very excited for this season,” he said. “Most of our top athletes are returning and we have some new additions to the team who will be major contributors.” According to the coach, standouts include returning state veterans Alfredo Hernandez (third in long jump, 4X400m), Juan Cortes (200, (4x400m) and Blake De Leon (4X400m). “They will make up the core of both relays this year,” he said. “We expect Cortes to be among the state leaders in the 400m and 200m.” “Hernandez had the second longest jump in the state for long jump last year and could contend for a state title. He is also a threat in the triple jump and could make waves in the 100m. “DeLeon enters the season ranked in the top five in the CWAC in both the triple jump and the 300m hurdles. He could potentially make state in both events. “Other athletes to watch are shot putters Juan Melgoza (43’7), Ezra Compo (42’10.5), and Andrew Schibig (39’ 6.5). Melgoza and Compo return ranked 3rd and 4th in the CWAC and Schibig has shown a

great deal of growth. Both Schibig and Melgoza are in the mix for a state berth for the discus as well.” Our girls team is also much stronger this year. We have back Heidy Rodriguez in all three distance races. She was an all-league performer and went to state in cross country. “In sprints we have a strong core of runners who could be near the top of the league in the relays. Our top girl sprinters include Olivia Vela, Tabby Hickey, and Iris Martinez. All three of those ladies have the potential of emerging as strong jumpers this year.” “Magda Vela returns as a contender for a state berth and a school record in the pole vault.” Boys and Girls Golf Early in the season, Holter was already predicting big wins by Wapato golfers. The team went to the Moses Lake Invitational, and showed the league that they are a force with which to be reckoned. “That’s exciting,” she said. WHITE SWAN Warren Starr, White Swan High School athletics director, said that he is excited about all of his school’s spring sports teams — baseball, fast-pitch, track and tennis. Boys and Girls Track Starr said that he noticed encouraging signs regarding boys and girls track even before anyone started Continued on page 5

The team played Zillah recently and played competitively in losses, which was “nice to see.” YAKAMA TRIBAL Boys and Girls Track Raelyn Strom, Yakama Tribal High School principal and athletics director, said that the sudden improvement of the track team in the last few years has been remarkable. Tim Celestine, Justin Shilow, Isaiah Strom, Starla Marquez and several other kids are likely to shine, she said. Rick Maib, track coach, said that he was very encouraged going into this season. “We have the biggest turnout that we’ve probably ever had,” he said. “We’ve got close to 30 kids.” The school has 70 total students. This is his third year at Yakama Tribal. At the end of his first year, he had four athletes on the team. The team grew to nearly 20 by the end of his second year. Now at around 30, he is part of a program that has taken the school by storm. He said that he has tried to make the sport fun and has gotten increased involvement by not holding ultra-serious practices. “I think that they didn’t really feel invited before,” he said. “When I was able to extend that invitation, they showed up.” And they stuck around because they saw that track was enjoyable.

Seventeen kids qualified for the event, and they ran well, he said. “So many of the kids were new and nervous, but they did a good job supporting one another,” he said. Tim Celestine made news in Naches as he set a school record with a 1500-meter race at 4:45. Maib expects more from Celestine throughout the year, but other athletes should also accomplish a lot. Starla Marquez, Mariah Hicks and Kaonna Olney should also perform well this year. “We’re going to keep climbing up a ladder, and that’s been great,” he said. ZILLAH Spring athletes are going to have trouble living up to the excellence achieved by Zillah’s winter teams, according to Rock Winters, Zillah High School athletics director. against all the best teams. He said standout athletes include Taylor Snell and Grace Stiles, who will battle for a state spot this year. “For the boys, Joe Ponti, Alex Villegas and Aj Waterman will battle in either singles or doubles,“ he said. “James Fernandez and Andy Zarate will battle in doubles. “I think our biggest strength is in our numbers, he said. “We have enough players to fill a boys and girls team and still have a few extra. All our challenge matches were very close and competitive. It will be helpful for us to battle in practice and take it to matches. Boys and Girls Track

Winters is also pleased with the success of his school’s track program, which drew 60 competitors this year to run under coach Ken Johnson. “We’re going to be very strong. Track should give us a great year, he said. “We’ve got some great athletes and we’re looking at competing real well at state. Johnson stood behind Winter’s high expectations for the year based on last year’s greatness. “Last season we had a very successful season, he said. “Both our boys and girls were league champions and district champions. Last year was the ninth year in a row that the boys won league. This team included a large group qualify for state. It is important to note, he said, that the team graduated

12 seniors. “This season we expect to match or exceed last season’s goals, he said. “We have a large group of kids out (65) with over 80 middle school kids. If they continue to work hard we think that they could have a great season. “Our goal is for everyone to get better as the season progresses and finish the season at state with as many athletes as possible. He stated that there are several outstanding athletes, and it is hard to speak of just a few stars. The team has state returners Miranda Borrego in the sprints and relays, Alexis Redfield in the mid-distance and distance (three school record holder as a freshman last year), Riley Olney in the sprints

and relays, Diego in the 400 and relays and Alejandro Ochoa in the mid-distance and distance. “We have a nice core group of seniors, as well as some new prospects, he said. “We also have some state participants from last year that should improve and help out. “Depth with 65 on our roster, well rounded in all events (except the pole vault — Zillah doesn’t have a pole vault event), a nice mix of experienced athletes and new kids, he said. “The throws are looking strong so far as well as our relays. We have a promising freshman class that has kids that will contribute right now. There are 19 freshmen out this year. He said that he is looking forward to seeing these athletes in some major competitions this season. “We are going to some new invites this year and are looking at seeing how we match up with some teams that we normally don’t see, he said. “For example, we will be going to Cashmere for their invite, and Freeman (in Spokane) for an invite. “Other than that we are taking one meet at a time and focusing on working hard in practice, he said. Boys and Girls Golf Winters said that golf will offer some highlights, though the team “struggles a bit with numbers. He said that three girls and between eight and 10 boys signed up for this year’s team. One among these players, Derrick Phelps, will likely battle for state, he said. Phelps competed at state last year as a senior, and he has only gotten better over the past year, Winters said.
