WELCOME TO CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA IN CONCERT
Supporting the arts, locally.
At BMO, we take pride in our local art communities. That’s why through various sponsorships and community involvement we are committed to helping. BMO is proud to support Vancouver Opera as the 2021-2022 Season Sponsor.
Our first production of the season, Orfeo ed Euridice, was a critical success as we brought audiences safely back to the theatre for an extraordinary celebration of contemporary dance and opera. We are so grateful to be back at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for our second production of the season: Cavalleria Rusticana in Concert. Prepare to be swept away by the melodic and dramatic music of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana as we shine a spotlight on our incredible ensembles. We are thrilled to welcome back Music Director Emeritus Jonathan Darlington to lead the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Chorus and five talented Canadian soloists in this live in-concert performance. We thank you—our generous donors, subscribers, ticket buyers, and sponsors—for continuing to support Vancouver Opera. This continues to be a challenging time, but it is because of you that we are here, live on the main stage making beautiful music. On behalf of the musicians, artists, staff, and board, thank you for supporting the arts in Vancouver. We hope you enjoy this performance, and we look forward to seeing you at HMS Pinafore this spring.

| CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA IN CONCERT
ACT I A village in Sicily, circa 1900. On Easter Sunday, Turiddu can be heard serenading his mistress, Lola. She and Turiddu were together before he joined the army. When he returned and found her married to Alfio, a wealthy wagon owner, he seduced Santuzza to make Lola jealous. As a result, Turiddu and Lola rekindled their love in an adulterous affair, leaving Santuzza heartbroken.
As the villagers leave for church, Santuzza stays behind and grieves. Turiddu arrives in the piazza where Santuzza confronts him about his affair, which he denies. Just then Lola passes by mocking Santuzza, and Turiddu turns to follow her. Santuzza begs him not to leave, but he abandons her. Alfio appears and Santuzza tells him that Lola has been cheating on him with Turiddu. In a rage, Alfio swears to get even and rushes off.
A distraught Santuzza approaches the tavern of Mamma Lucia, Turiddu’s mother, who tells her that her son is away buying wine. But Santuzza knows that he was busy elsewhere. Alfio arrives, boasting of his wealth and of Lola. He asks Mamma Lucia for some of her good wine. When she says that Turiddu has gone to get more, Alfio replies that he saw him near his house earlier. Mamma Lucia is surprised, but Santuzza quiets her.
Following church, the villagers gather at the tavern where Alfio confronts Turridu and challenges him to a knife fight. Turiddu admits his guilt but still proceeds to fight for Santuzza’s sake, as well as for his honour. Alone with his mother, Turiddu begs her to take care of Santuzza if he doesn’t come back, then runs off to the fight. As Mamma Lucia waits anxiously, a woman runs in screaming that Turiddu has been killed.

NOTES FROM THE CONDUCTOR Jonathan Darlington
Pietro Mascagni became world famous almost overnight at the tender age of 26 when, in 1890, his first opera Cavalleria rusticana was given its premiere in Rome. It remains to this day his most famous operatic creation although he wrote many more—15 in all— during a distinguished career as composer, teacher, and conductor that spanned almost 60 years. SOUND TO COLOUR: AN EXPLORATION OF SYNESTHESIA, THROUGH PAINTING, BY CIELE BEAU. Artist Ciele Beau translates sheet music into colour, using her synesthetic responses to a piece of music. When Ciele hears music and tone she sees and feels colour. What you’re seeing is a piece of music translated into colour and in musical time. Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway in the brain leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.
Orfeo ed Euridice | Aria: “Che farò senza Euridice” | Vocal melody translated: Orfeo/Orpheus

It was also the piece that launched a musical “genre” known as Verismo which, as its name suggests, took scenes from everyday life and turned them into dramatic—more often than not quite violent—works for the stage. Gone, at least in Italy, were the
days of plots centered around the exploits of gods, figures of antiquity or nobility. Now the public demanded an operatic diet based on real-life fodder. The emotions in Verismo (think Puccini’s Tosca) are heightened. Colours are vivid and extreme both vocally and in the orchestra. The declamation is forceful and the action moves fast, a precursor to what we all experience these days on our screens. As an artist, Cavalleria rusticana is a thrill to perform, and summoning up images from village life in 19th century Sicily certainly adds romantic heat to a world leaning in the opposite direction. 11
JENNIFER TUNG Women in Musical Leadership Conductor Jennifer Tung leads a uniquely versatile career as a music director, collaborative pianist, and soprano. She is Artistic Director of Toronto City Opera, Assistant Conductor of Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, and was named a 2020 conducting fellow with Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership program. Jennifer serves on the faculty at Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of Music and is a sought-after faculty member for summer programs internationally.
