YWCA IS DEDIC ATED TO ELIMI STAND NATING RACISM UP EMPOWERING WOMEN AND SPEAK PROMOTING PEACE , JUSTICE OUT FREEDOM, AND DIGNITY FOR ALL 2016–2017 ANNUAL REPORT
STAND UP
We at the YWCA believe that all women cannot be empowered if we do not address the issues of race and racism. This belief underscores our past, present and future work addressing the unique needs and experiences of women of color and their families and communities. At the core of our work is the recognition that not all women, or all people, are treated fairly. YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women points to the fact that gender, race and economic equality are social issues that are interconnected and must be addressed in concert. Girls of color in particular are often overlooked when policy makers address issues of gender and racial inequity. Despite the gains women of color have made, the numbers are stark — the wage gap still exists, women of color are far underrepresented in corporate, governmental and non-profit leadership roles, and women and girls of color experience more frequent and deadlier gender-based violence.
Over the past year we have expanded our advocacy efforts because YWCA is often the first to bear witness to the needs of our diverse communities. We are uniquely positioned to focus our advocacy efforts to help shape effective public policy and legislation on safety for women, gender equality and racial justice issues at the local, state and federal level. We stand with women and girls of color as we advocate for policies that level the playing field and address disparities in economic, health and safety outcomes for women of color. We continue a long tradition of social action and advocacy to advance our critical mission — and we will not stop. We will continue to stand up and speak out. — Barbara C. Perez, President/CEO

ADVOCACY IN ACTION
Our words and actions have made a difference. We helped pass the Children Services Levy (Issue 53) and the Preschool Promise (Issue 44) by working polls and phone banks and distributing yard signs. We were part of the effort advocating against Human Services funding cuts. On June 21, 2017, City Council approved $350K in additional human services funding for 2018 and has committed to increase human services to 1.5% of the General Fund over the next five years. Our work helped influence Cincinnati City Council to pass two Ordinances in support of the Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women. We have completed one session of IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) Judicial Training with three more in the works.

RACIAL JUSTICE & INCLUSION
SPEAK OUT We are committed to eliminating racism because despite any indication of racial progress, economic disparity alone confirms that race still matters.

Racial Justice Educational Series explores various issues through lectures, film, and panel discussions. Stand Against Racism Campaign is a signature campaign of YWCA USA to build community among those who work for racial justice and raise awareness about institutional and structural racism in our communities.
