A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EVENT CHAIRPERSONS This annual event, now in its 43rd year, recognizes and celebrates eight trailblazing women who have achieved remarkable success in their careers. We also honor two female students for their determination to succeed despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, recognizing the value in education and perseverance. For the inspiration and example they have set, we congratulate the 2022 YWCA Career Women of Achievement and the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp and Mamie Earl Sells Scholarship honorees. Career Women of Achievement is also our largest fundraising event. Your support of this event enables us to offer critical programs in the areas of safety, racial justice and inclusion, and empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls. Until 2020, this event was held in person and was the Midwest region’s largest luncheon with 2,000 in attendance. Once again this year, with the accessibility of broadcast and streaming, we hope to reach upwards of 35,000 viewers. We sincerely thank all who helped us make this annual event a great success. It would not be possible without the efforts of our community partners listed and our loyal Steering Committee members. We thank them for joining us in our mission of empowering women, eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

JENNIFER DAVIS CEO, Health Care Procter & Gamble Jennifer leads P&G’s multi-billion dollar global feminine care business, serving women and girls in nearly 120 countries. Through these global brands, Jen has been lauded for her mission to increase girls’ access to menstrual products in order to boost confidence at puberty. She is especially passionate about the role global social impact programs have on society such as the award-winning Always #LikeAGirl, #EndPeriodPoverty and #KeepingHerPlaying, using sports as a way to increase self-esteem. Humility, hard work, and a commitment to excellence, were instilled in Jen at a young age. Originally she set out on an academic path, but found she could satisfy her love of learning and leading diverse teams in a business career. She says, “Over time, I have learned that leadership is less about what I know and more about asking the right questions of the team.” Jen is compelled to leverage her voice and position toward centering conversations on the additional challenges faced by women of color — while also celebrating their impact and amplifying the collective work being done. She says, “The realization that I didn’t accomplish anything alone is what inspires me to help others find their calling, develop their strengths, overcome obstacles and have equal opportunity.”

NERISSA E. MORRIS Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer Cincinnati Children’s In her youth, Nerissa’s father, a pastor, gave her a plaque with the wise words, “Good, better, best — Never let it rest, ‘till your good is your better, and your better is your best.” It helped shape her focus on excellence, leading to a career filled with continuous learning, seeking new paradigms for doing business and leading with curiosity, confidence and courage. As a result, Nerissa came to Cincinnati Children’s with a worldclass resume that included global and national expertise across various industries. She served in senior leadership positions at the University of Miami, Ford Motor Company and Volvo Car Corporation. Such experience led to Nerissa’s current role overseeing a staff that serves over 16,000 employees, a $325 million budget and transformative initiatives such as raising minimum wage, structuring career pathways, strengthening culture and establishing diversity, equity and inclusion as a top leadership priority. Nerissa has leaned into opportunities through international roles in Sweden and Brazil, to her current role as the first Black leader at the senior vice president level at Cincinnati Children’s. Many times, by being a “first” or “only,” especially as a Black woman, she has answered the call to serve, lead, mentor, and pave the way for others.

TYASIA PERSON Hughes STEM High School YWCA Mamie Earl Sells Scholarship Recipient
Deeply close to her grandmother, Tyasia was devastated by her death from cancer. She vowed to be the family’s first-generation college student and major in biomedical engineering so she can study, learn and research about cancer. She will attend the University of Cincinnati and study biomedical engineering. Like Ms. Sells, Tyasia lifts others up as she serves her school and community despite experiencing housing insecurity. A student at Hughes STEM High School, Tyasia maintains a 4.38 GPA while active on campus and volunteering in the Cincinnati Police Cadet Program and working 21 hours a week at Auntie Anne’s. She organized a school fundraiser to profit the Susan G. Koman Foundation and is a member of National Honor Society, the cheerleading squad, dance team and track and cross country team. Tyasia also holds office in student government. Tyasia says, “Being an African American young woman going into STEM, I will need the support of others as I offer that same support. It reminds me of the movie Hidden Figures where the women faced very real hardships. Just like those ground-breaking women leaders, I vow to work with and lift others as I climb to accomplish my goals and achieve individual and team success. I stand on the shoulders of many women who are ‘hidden figures.’”
CHARLOTTE R. SCHMIDLAPP FUND SCHOLARSHIP Fifth Third Bank, Trustee
KATE KINMAN Penn Foster Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Scholarship Fund Recipient
Kate fled an abusive relationship and was taken to a hotel used as a YWCA shelter. Due to the effectiveness of YWCA’s Transitional Living Program, she was able to enter a therapy program, get control of her mental health and heal from years of abuse. Early in the program she also discovered she was pregnant. Thanks to their Rapid Rehousing Program, she now has her own apartment and a safe place to raise her child. Kate learned how to conduct a personal inventory of her skills. She determined that a remote work-from-home position in the medical and billing field would provide lucrative pay and the opportunity to care for her baby. The Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Scholarship will enable her to be a full-time student in the Penn Foster Program so that she can enter the workforce as quickly as possible. “Today I am proud to say that I do see myself as a strong, determined woman,” Kate says. Adds YWCA staff sponsor Sunni Smith, “Kate is very deserving of this scholarship. I haven’t met anyone who has put in more hard work to be successful than Kate.”
In 1908, Jacob Godfrey Schmidlapp created the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund to memorialize his young daughter who was killed in an automobile accident while touring France at the age of 19. What began as a $250,000 fund has grown to over $25 million in assets. The Fund, created to “ennoble, empower and uplift” young women and girls, began by awarding interest-free loans to aid young women in pursuit of higher education. More than 110 years later, the Fund is still supporting the clients of the YWCA. In 2008, the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, created an endowment for a scholarship to provide financial support for women participating in YWCA programs.

RISING STARS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
In 2002, the Academy of Career Women of Achievement, recognizing their collective commitment to “lift as you climb,” introduced the Rising Star Award to recognize and support women ages 25 to 40 in pursuit of excellence in their careers. Over 900 dynamic professional women have been honored as Rising Stars, and over 500 are graduates of the YWCA Rising Star Leadership Program, a five-month program designed to enhance leadership qualities, train Rising Stars for non-profit board service, create support networks, and offer program participants the inspiration and tools to become gender and racial equity leaders.
