OUR VOICE FOR WHAT’S RIGHT

2019 ANNUAL REPORT

As I reflect on the past year, my thoughts are consumed with the crises our community is experiencing now. Most of us find safety and comfort in our homes from the pandemic. But for survivors of domestic violence, every day is a crisis and being at home never feels safe. While sheltering in our homes has increased our chances of surviving this health crisis, those experiencing abuse at home aren’t sure they will survive the day. It reminds me of courageous survivors like Eboni. Eboni lost her job due to the pandemic and was isolated with her abusive partner of five years. The abuse escalated to a point that it was having a significant emotional impact on her five children. She could see it on their faces and their behaviors began to change as they became more aware of what was happening.

“This is exactly where I want to be as an artist, teaming up with amazing organizations and talented artists to put messages of connection and transformation out in the world in big and loud ways.” —M OLLY COSTELLO ART & DESIGN on working with ArtWorks on the 2019 mural ‘Connected through the Generations’ commemorating YWCA Greater Cincinnati’s 150th Anniversary.

Eboni bravely reached out for help. She and her children left with merely one bag of belongings and were safely moved to our domestic violence shelter. Our dedicated team welcomed her family with all the care and support needed to create a safe and happy home.

Eboni, Domestic Violence Survivor

The shelter staff diligently helped her secure housing, a job, and childcare. We helped her navigate the court system to ensure she and her children stayed safe. Removing some of those barriers made it possible for her to focus on addressing the trauma from years of abuse. Eboni says leaving her abusive partner and starting over has been the greatest accomplishment of her life. Her children are happy, healthy, and everything is finally falling into place. She has found home again, where she feels safe.

Eboni is an inspiration, and one of over 700 survivors we help each year create a life free from abuse.

We’re so grateful for our community who understands the importance of our mission and who gives selflessly so we can invest in families like Eboni’s. We are on a mission and will continue to do this life-saving work until every woman, man, and child in our community is safe from abuse. —  B ARBARA C. PEREZ YWCA President/CEO

OUR VOICE FOR SURVIVORS & YOUTH

SAFETY

YWCA provides life-saving domestic violence shelter and housing to over 700 survivors that includes counseling, coordination of community resources and basic necessities such as food and transportation. 81% developed a safety plan to protect themselves and their children from future violence. Community-based intervention services include court advocacy, case management, and specialized services for child protective cases, immigrant survivors and those with disabilities. 450 adults who have harmed their intimate partners participated in our programs designed to help identify and change thoughts and beliefs, thus ending the cycle of domestic violence. Keeping survivors safe is just the beginning. Prevention services are provided to over 3,000 youth in schools and over 95% report improvements to decision-making, and ability to resist unhealthy behaviors.

Of those that participate, 57% are able to both increase their wages and obtain employment.

OUR VOICE FOR JUSTICE

RACIAL JUSTICE & ADVOCACY

The YWCA has long been a leader in Cincinnati’s racial justice and inclusion efforts. From advocating for anti-lynching legislation in the 1930’s to leading the Cincinnati Regional Coalition Against Hate in 2020, we have been advocating for equal rights and working to raise awareness and transform our communities and systems. The YWCA’s racial justice and advocacy work is rooted in addressing systemic and structural barriers to equity, opportunity, and safety for women, girls, people of color, and other marginalized communities. We are currently focusing our racial justice work on three key initiatives: • Voting Rights and Getting Out the Vote • Restorative Justice Practices in Schools • Ending Racial and Religious Profiling YWCA’s racial justice and inclusion work impacts our community through our various initiatives, including: • Film screening education series • Community Conversations • Marian Spencer Town Hall Series on voting rights • Real Reads book discussions • Implicit bias and equity training workshops • Racial Justice Breakfast

HISTORY OF WOMEN AND AFRICAN AMERICANS’ RIGHT TO VOTE

OUR VOTE IS OUR VOICE • The campaign for women’s suffrage was a small but growing movement in the decades before the Civil War. Starting in the 1820s various reform groups proliferated across the U.S. including temperance leagues, the abolitionist movement and religious groups. Women played a prominent role in many of them. • In 1848 the movement for women’s rights launched on a national level with the Seneca Falls Convention organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. • The 15th Amendment, passed in 1870, stated that voting rights could not be “denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” • The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote and was ratified on August 18, 1920 ending almost a century of protest.

• What is the 19th Amendment? “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.” • On November 2 of 1920 more than 8 million women across the United States voted in elections for the first time. • However, as history informs us, it took until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to overcome the many legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote as guaranteed under the 15th amendment. • The Supreme Court in 2013 effectively struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by a 5–4 vote, freeing nine states, mostly in the south, to change their election laws without advance federal approval.
