DEAR YWCA COMMUNITY, There’s a saying that goes, “Change is the only constant in life,” which seems particularly true these past two years! I have served as a board member of the YWCA of Asheville for six years and witnessed many changes at this organization, and have seen firsthand how flexible, responsive, and resilient the YWCA community is. This past year has brought many changes to the YWCA– we’ve witnessed the onset of a global pandemic and the departure of our CEO, Libby Kyles. My personal life has also undergone some major changes– this year I not only stepped up as Board Chair of the YWCA, but became a mother to my beautiful daughter. In response to COVID-19, the YWCA quickly pivoted to better serve our community. We closed our facilities to the public and opened up emergency childcare services for frontline workers bearing the brunt of the pandemic, and began food distribution in partnership with MANNA FoodBank. We also shifted our Diabetes Wellness and Prevention, Getting Ahead, and MotherLove programs to a virtual setting, ensuring that our participants received that vital support. Our staff, many of whom were working reduced hours, went above and beyond. Most recently, the summer of 2020 has seen a heightened awareness of something that we at the YWCA have always known: that systemic racism is embedded into nearly every institution in our country. The wave of support for Black lives has been inspiring. We recognize the importance of our mission– eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all– now more than ever, and we are dedicated to this fight. This report spans two years, both years spent fighting for social and racial justice and caring for our community. We’re proud to share our accomplishments achieved under both Beth Maczka and Libby Kyles, former CEOs, and look forward to what the future has in store. The YWCA has been a pillar of the Asheville community for the past 113 years, and we plan to be here for the next 113 years and beyond. Thank you for being part of our community!
Jesica Hooper Chair, Board of Directors YWCA of Asheville

ELIMINATING RACISM At the YWCA, our programming is designed to address inequities, gaps, and disparities created by institutional and structural racism. Through our policies, practices, and values we strive to promote equity, inclusion, and diversity both at the YWCA and throughout our broader community. In addition to our programming, our advocacy work for local, state, and national initiatives contribute to the elimination of racism. Examples of this work include the Stand Against Racism, Racial Justice Workshops, voter engagement and census outreach activities, and founding membership of the Racial Justice Coalition.
We need your fight. We don’t need your fight just today, we need it for today and for every day after.
In response to the murder of George Floyd and ongoing police brutality against communities of color, Asheville native and former CEO Libby Kyles, spoke at a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally this past June, saying: “We march for our future, but we also march for the past. We march for the people who stood before us in order that we could be here. We need your fight. We don’t need your fight just today, we need it for today and for every day after.”
As our society begins to reckon with its undercurrents we must remain vigilant for those who have been consistently oppressed, marginalized, and denied their opportunity for peace, justice, and freedom by the crippling nature of systemic and institutionalized racism. The YW has stood and continues to stand in solidarity with our most vulnerable populations because we know that this is a movement, not a moment. In order to continue to drive the needle forward, momentum is not optional.

EMPOWERING WOMEN Donterria’s Story
At the YWCA, we know that when women are healthy, safe, secure, and economically empowered, the whole society benefits. To that end, our Women’s Empowerment programs give women the tools to become whatever they want to be – confident parents, successful entrepreneurs, community advocates, and more. In her junior year of high school, Donterria had a lot on her plate. She was taking three honors classes, trying to maintain her 4.7 GPA, and she had just given birth to her son, Dakota. Without support from her family, it was just too much. Donterria dropped out of high school before her first semester of eleventh grade ended.
I was struggling really badly. I figured out really early that this was not the life that I wanted to live.
Donterria began working full-time to provide for her son. It didn’t take long before she realized she needed to make a change. “I was struggling really badly. I figured out really early that this was not the life that I wanted to live.” Thankfully, a trusted counselor connected Donterria with the YWCA’s MotherLove Program, which helps pregnant and parenting teenagers.Immediately, teenagers.Immediately,
Donterria graduating High School carrying her son, Dakota.
some of the weight began to lift from her shoulders. Donterria now had someone helping her navigate the obstacles that come with being a teen mom. When she made the decision to go back to school, MotherLove staff helped her get into Community High, where she could bring Dakota. Not having to worry about finding childcare during school hours was a huge relief. Now feeling more stable, Donterria was once again excelling in school and began to set her sights on college. By the time she was ready to graduate, Donterria had received four scholarships from her high school and two from A-B Tech. In a matter of months, Donterria completely changed the course of her life thanks to the support she received from the YWCA’s MotherLove Program.
39 women participated in our Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ by World program which helps women build a support system while investigating resources to get out of poverty. 60% of those women made progress towards their goals.
112 teen parents attended MotherLove programming, 40 signed up for case management and additional support, and 100% of seniors graduated from high school. Reflected outcomes represent 2018-2020

NURTURING CHILDREN Grace’s Story The YWCA has long understood that the biggest barrier to women’s economic empowerment is the lack of safe, affordable childcare. In Buncombe County, securing childcare for children under five can be difficult and waitlists can span months or even years. With support from our donors and community, the YWCA of Asheville expanded our childcare center, adding four new classrooms so we can serve even more working families.
The YWCA has never been more important to the community, and I am incredibly grateful for all that they do.
A special thank you to our Eleanor Roosevelt Giving Society members, the Community Foundation of WNC, Buncombe County, Buncombe County Development Fund, and Earthfare for making the expansion possible.
When stay-at-home orders forced childcare centers across our county to close, the YWCA staff made the decision to remain open for essential workers. From March through June we offered childcare to these families at no cost. We are proud and grateful that our resilient child care staff made the decision to come to work every day and provide for working parents. “As COVID-19 swept the nation and life in Asheville started shutting down, I was incredibly worried that I would be left without childcare. Thankfully, the YW came through. They are taking all the same precautions we take at the hospital. Knowing that my boys are taken care of allows me and my husband to take care of others in the middle of this once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. The YWCA has never been more important to the community, and I am incredibly grateful for all that they do.” - Dr. Grace Keeney-Bonthrone, mother of two boys and hero.

PROMOTING HEALTH Kitty’s Story The YWCA of Asheville promotes health through our Preventative Health and Membership programs. Swimming was the first program to be integrated at the YWCA of Asheville, well before integration became the law of the land. Today, our Swim Equity program provides swim lessons to children through scholarships, community partnerships, and ensuring every child in our childcare program learns to swim. This is an important part of our mission because black children are SIX TIMES more likely to drown than white children of the same age. “Where I come from the statistics of children drowning has always been alarming - especially within communities of color. Working at the YWCA for over 20 years has provided me with the opportunity to lend my expertise to groups that generally fall through the cracks.” - Kitty Schmidt, Director of Aquatics
Where I come from the statistics of children drowning has always been alarming - especially within communities of color. Working at the YWCA for over 20 years has provided me with the opportunity to lend my expertise to groups that generally fall through the cracks.
Swim Equity is supported by grants from the Helen A. Powers Fund, Buncombe County Strategic Partnership Grants, Asheville Parks and Recreation and our generous donors.
Alongside our swim equity program 3953 health and fitness members worked towards wellness goals, 102 Diabetes Wellness and Prevention participants were empowered to take control of their health by developing exercise habits, learning about proper nutrition, and increasing their knowledge of diabetes. In addition 3,000 swim lessons were taught by our highly experienced instructors; 1,050 scholarships were provided to our community members including children in our Early Learning Program, students at Asheville Middle, Asheville Preschool, and Salsa, Sabor y Salud participants; 1,363 community members took part in free Community Swim, a partnership with Asheville Parks and Recreation.

THANK YOU, LIBBY KYLES Over the span of 15 months (June 2019-September 2020), Libby Kyles lead our organization not only through immense change but the onset of a pandemic, this was no small task. We thank her greatly for her service and accomplishments during her time at the YWCA. In addition Libby has been recognized by leaders throughout our community for her multifaceted advocacy work. She is a co-founder and leader of the recently formed Black Avl Demands, co-founder and the Vice Chair of the board of directors for PEAK Academy charter school, which is set to open in 2021 amogst many other initiatives. “It takes a village” and we support her dedication to creating change in our community. We wish her the best in her future endeavors.
E. Thelma Caldwell was named Executive Director of the YWCA of Asheville in 1965, becoming the second African American to lead a newly integrated YWCA association in the nation and the first in the South. Under Thelma’s executive leadership from 1965—1975 the physical integration of the Black and White branches of Asheville’s YWCA was realized. In 1976, in response to new challenges the YWCA faced regarding race and fundraising, a group of retired Black board members formed the YWCA Booster Club. Later joined by White members committed to integration, the Boosters worked tirelessly to carry on Thelma’s work. Named for Thelma Caldwell and dedicated to the women of the Booster Club, our Legacy Society members’ generosity and foresight through planned giving ensures our organization’s resiliency and lasting impact for years to come.
In 1956, Eleanor Roosevelt visited Asheville on tour for the United Nations and would only agree to speak to an integrated audience. The YWCA of Asheville was the only organization that would host the event, and Eleanor Roosevelt spoke to a sold out crowd of over 800 people. Eleanor Roosevelt was a bold, confident woman. She was a fearless visionary and a champion for civil rights. It is in her honor that YWCA Asheville named our giving society, whose members do so much to support the YWCA mission. The members of the Eleanor Roosevelt Giving Society recognize the importance of sustainable support for YWCA’s mission-based work. Our members make commitments of $1,000 or more per year for five years, which helps the YWCA plan and address our most urgent needs.
