THE PEACH SPRING BEYOND THIS WORLD

The pace of modern life is getting faster and faster. It is difficult for people to get relief and release in this rhythm of life. In this project, I selected three classical Chinese stories and designed a theater space that can be experienced in the city. They represent life, money and love respectively. It tries to solve the problems that people face in the fastpaced city and open a new way to experience the theater.

This is the site of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, but now it is in ruins.

Shanghai is developing rapidly. However, do the citizens adapt to this rapid development? After the demolition of the Expo, the site has not become prosperous.

The article describes a self-sufficient

It’s a story of their sincere

Meng Jiangnv came to the Great Wall and cried bitterly, revealing her husband's bones.

ROLE RELATIONSHIP TYPOLOGY

Take the elevator to the sky platform and overlook the city. You will be attracted by the charming of the city. And step into the spherical space, your story will start.

UNDER THE DOME: PEACH BLOSSOM FOREST

Here is not the same as outside, providing a relaxing and leisure surrounding. You will see a lady dancing on the platform. It seems a place for residents with happy and carefree living.

HIDE AND SEEK

Following the residents here, you will come to a place like a maze. Passing through the revolving doors one after another, they seem to play hide and seek with you. In this simple game, you will forget the time.

Following the sound of water, you will find here. This is the woodcutter’s home.

Is there really gold here? The golden light is the sunlight reflected from the bottom of the well!! You will start to become scared.

There is a golden well behind the house. Greedy thorns and shining windows will take you to the mouth of the well. You decide to look for gold…

You run to the light, but the darkness here and the pillars on both sides make you feel scared.

SEARCH FOR THE EXIT

Escaping from the well, you look out the window in a panic, and look for the direction of the exit.

BEGINNING

You will suddenly recognize that you are following slide to the inside of the theater. Lying in the kid’s ball and listening to the wonderful music, you have never heard it before in real life.

ENDING

At the curtain call, you will separate from the actors by two platforms this time, which means you will return to the real world. The familiar music is sounded again, and a new crossing between reality and fantasy is taking place…

RESEARCH

Worldwide, the number of patients suffering from oral cancer is not a few, mainly in Asia and Africa. Among them, Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway and other countries have long banned the import of betel nuts and listed betel nuts as "drugs."

Devil Nut

Betel nut was listed as the first class carcinogen in the world in 2003, but in my hometown of Xiangtan, China, betel nut has become an industry and sells well all over the country. Betel nut is addictive, and people are easily addicted after trying it.

In this project, I designed a set of devices through the pathological study of oral cancer caused by betel nut, in order to warn people to eat less betel nut. At the same time, I also designed a device for patients who have had half of their face removed because of oral cancer. The mask allows them to gain confidence and dignity.

FABRICATION PROCESS

Through CNC engraving machine, the main structure and details of the column can be engraved. From the material selection, you can choose lightweight polystyrene, which is cheap and easy to shape, and the outer layer can be sprayed with matte paint or glossy paint to highlight the sense of line and pathological morphology.

I tried to design a mask, hoping to bring dignity and confidence to the "face-cut people". My uncle is a patient with oral cancer. His inferiority complex and serious psychological problems after his illness, and he was unable to contact his family and one-year-old grandson, because he has a devilish face, so this is the starting point for my mask design.

CONCLUSION

During the investigation, I found that betel nut has a good sales volume, which also comes from the design of its packaging. It is often designed in red and yellow, which represents joy in China.

However, studies have shown that placing disgusting pictures on cigarette packages can effectively reduce purchases. So maybe it is possible to reduce people's purchase of betel nuts by designing packaging.

Semester 3 MDes Interior Design

AbstractThis study questions the traditional therapy of interpreting dreams through the subconscious mind and instead focuses on sensory and visual approaches. Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's story of self-healing through dreams, this project explores how the process of dream generation can be integrated with visual stimulation in interior design, aiming to fulfil therapeutic purposes. By combining sandplay with narrative space, the project aims to guide individuals in self-exploration and healing. Research proposes that dreams, often illusory and fragmented, are subconscious projections that can be reached through shallow excavation methods. This exploration is realised through interactive experiences such as playing, creating, bathing and reading, with visual stimulation as the main experimental direction.

The research further explored the roots of dreams and childhood memories, choosing Britain's oldest playgrounds as the primary research site. The therapeutic potential of dreams was explored by analysing and collecting elements such as the shapes and colours of the rides, which were integrated into the design of the space. The study categorised the narrative space into three stages - childhood, adulthood and old agewith each stage representing a different state of dreaming. These stages incorporate activities such as sand tray games, bath ball making and bath ball experiences.

The ultimate goal is to guide participants to tap into their subconscious mind through sand tray games, collect bath ball materials through the rides, and create a bath ball that embodies their dream state. Participants dry the bath ball and

use it, and in the process of using the bath ball, they discover that it contains other people's dreams, thus achieving self-healing through reading other people's dreams.

This project contributes a unique approach to the field of interior design by integrating dream exploration and therapeutic activities into spatial design. It provides a framework for creating environments that not only fulfil functional needs but also stimulate the user's subconscious mind and promote emotional healing and self-discovery. This research will be particularly beneficial to designers interested in designing therapeutic environments, as well as psychologists exploring alternatives for emotional healing.

AIM

Explore the application of symbolic dream expressions in healing spaces, aiming to guide individuals towards psychological self-healing through space design. Investigate the relationship between childhood memories and dreams, and how these elements can be integrated into space design to evoke personal subconscious and emotions.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How can symbolic elements of dreams be used in space design to enhance the healing effects of the environment?

How does the relationship between dreams and childhood memories influence emotional resonance in space design?

Key words: Dream、Psychological self-healing、Childhood memories、Symbolic elements of dreams

Time line

The definition and understanding of dreams have evolved significantly throughout history with the development of culture and science. In ancient times, many cultures viewed dreams as revelations from gods or supernatural forces. For instance, dreams in the Bible were often interpreted as messages from God. In ancient Greece, Aristotle believed that dreams were continuations or distortions of sensory experiences from daily life while Plato suggested that dreams might originate from the realm of the soul. In China, the Zhougong dream interpretation was an early systematic attempt to explain dreams, where they were seen as predictors of the future or revelations of inner secrets.

Freud proposed that dreams are expressions of the subconscious, while Jung further developed the concepts of the collective unconscious and archetypes

Additionally, the Native American tradition of the dreamcatcher reflects a belief in the power of dreams, with entire villages discussing and interpreting dreams daily to guide their lives. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as psychology emerged, dreams began to be seen as a crucial window into the human subconscious. Freud proposed that dreams are “the royal road to the unconscious,” arguing that they express repressed desires and emotions, often through symbolic means. Jung further expanded on this, suggesting that dreams reflect not only the personal unconscious but also the collective unconscious, involving universal archetypes. With advancements in neuroscience, dreams

have been redefined as the brain’s processing of memory, emotion, and cognition during sleep. Scientists now believe that while processing information, the brain may use dreams to integrate daytime experiences, regulate emotions, and solve problems. Modern research has shown that dreams not only aid in memory consolidation but also play a critical role in emotional regulation and trauma recovery.

Amusement park

Garden of Death

Dreamland Margate, one of the UK’s oldest amusement parks, has been a beloved part of the community since its opening in 1900. Despite its age and a history of challenges, including a devastating fire and subsequent closure, there’s a strong push among locals to restore this historic park. But why such enthusiasm for reviving an old amusement park?

The answer lies in the deep connection between the park and the childhood memories of those who grew up with it. Dreamland is more than just a place of entertainment; it symbolizes the carefree joy of youth for many. The rides and attractions are intertwined with some of their happiest moments, making the park a touchstone for reliving those simpler times.

This drive to restore Dreamland is about more than just preserving a physical space—it’s about reconnecting with the emotions and dreams rooted in childhood. The park’s revival reflects the enduring influence of childhood memories on our dreams and aspirations.

But nowadays, it has been turned into a venue for performances, and very few people come here for fun anymore.

Condensation

Characteristic Transition

In reality maybe you have two friends but in the dream world he will become a character in the dream world. Like Mario Klingemann's work, painting a kind of chaotic portrait of a character.

Displacement

In the previous experiments, the expression of pixels and colours for the abstraction of the picture was found, which side by side proves the connection between colours and the mood of the picture. And in the dream world, the dream world assigns emotions on top of some characters or objects. (For example, breaking your favourite bottle in a dream)

There are different behaviours in the dream state, which are mainly expressions of subconscious behaviours and driven by desires.

The pre-programme will select specific shapes from Dreamland, mixing and combining them. Explore symbolic representations of dream forms.

Pair colours with different spatial amenities or furniture in mood colours.

EXPERIMENT: BATH BALL

Prepare citric acid, starch, baking soda, food coloring and other materials

Mix all the ingredients and add food colouring for colouring.

To satisfy reasonable behaviour and activity in space. And rationally connects the relationships between spaces, similar to Quemi's narrative expression.

In order to prevent us from realising that we are dreaming while we are dreaming, the dream world restructures all the elements to try to make the story in the dream world as plausible as possible.

Planning sensible routes in the space

The mention of keywords such as bath, colours, and dreams made me think of bath balls. In this section, I wanted to explore whether it is possible to combine bath balls, dreams and colours with each other by making my own bath balls.

In the process of experimentation, I found something interesting. When I finished the bath ball, I found that by placing strips of paper of the corresponding colours in the bath ball, the colours of the bath ball helped people to identify the different bath balls to a great extent.

Can store notes and other small objects inside

Pile up a small hill using the raw materials for both bath balls, to make it easier to combine the two semicircles together By squeezing hard, the bath ball is made and it takes 22 hours to dry before it can be used.

DISPLACEMENT

Through Robert Plutchik's theory on colours and emotions, we can associate different colours with various emotions, and furthermore assign such emotions to traditional amusement rides, giving them a new emotional meaning.Plutchik's Emotion Wheel Theory states that there is a colour for every emotion, e.g. yellow for joy, blue for sadness, green for trust and so on. green for trust, etc. (Plutchik, R. 1980) By combining these colours with play equipment, we can convey different emotional experiences through the colour design of the equipment.

For example, a trampoline can be coloured red to symbolise the thrill of the experience. A roller coaster slide can be coloured orange to convey a sense of surprise and enjoyment, enhancing the adrenaline rush for the rider.( Kaya, N., & Epps, H. H. 2004)

Through this design, amusement rides are not only a tool for entertainment, but also a carrier for emotional expression, allowing visitors to feel the fluctuation and resonance of their inner emotions while experiencing the rides. This method of combining emotions and colours in the design of amusement rides can also bring new creativity and direction to the space.

DEATH AND COLOR

The concepts of death and rebirth are deeply intertwined with symbolism, particularly in dream interpretation and literature. Dreaming about death often symbolizes not an end, but a transformation or rebirth, which can signify personal growth or a major life transition (Custom Writing, 2024). This connection to rebirth naturally leads to the concept of cleansing and renewal, which is where the act of bathing comes into play. Bathing, both in dreams and real life, represents emotional cleansing and healing, a fresh start that can be seen as a form of rebirth (MyraDream, 2024).

Given this context, exploring the connection between dreams, color, and the act of bathing through the creation of bath bombs becomes an intriguing endeavor. Bath bombs, with their vibrant colors and effervescent nature, add layers of sensory pleasure and emotional rejuvenation, further enhancing the symbolic act of bathing as a form of emotional and

psychological healing (MyraDream, 2024). By crafting your own bath bombs, you can intentionally combine specific colors that are known to influence mood and emotional states, thereby creating a unique experience that not only cleanses the body but also touches the subconscious, much like a dream does.

JOURNEY INTRODUCTION

It takes 22 hours of drying time to make a bath ball, so chose a pinball machine to store the bath balls. There are two reasons why I used the pinball. Firstly, the pinball is derived from the original playground equipment, and secondly, by using the pinball, there is an interesting way of interaction between the human and the bath ball.

“Dry for 22 hours”

The dried bath balls will be placed on a shelf for storage. At this time you can distinguish and take the bath balls you are interested in by their colours, which come from other people's stories and dreams.

Experience and creation

Storage Your “Dream Ball“

Here you will have the opportunity to make your own bath ball (the colour of the bath ball depends on your dream and story) you can place your story in the bath ball.

The final space is a unique experience area where you will have the opportunity to feel and experience these specially designed bath bombs. As the bath bombs slowly dissolve in warm water, you will be pleasantly surprised to find hidden stories inside. These stories have been carefully written by others, full of emotion and reflection. While soaking in the bath, you can relax and enjoy the soothing atmosphere while reading these touching stories, providing you with a dual sense of healing.

After the experience, you can head to the rooftop garden, where you can express your own story, or the story you just read, through painting. This is not only a process of creation but also an opportunity to share. Your artwork may be displayed on the blue shelf, allowing more people to share in your insights and thoughts.

In the first space, you will access a dream of your subconscious mind by stimulating your subconscious mind through a sand tray game. You will need to organise the objects in the sandbox game into a dream or story of yours.
