“The body is the physical agent of the structures of everyday experience. It is the producer of dreams, the transmitter and receiver of cultural messages, a creature of habits, a desiring machine, a repository of memories, an actor in the theater of power, a tissue of affects and feelings. Because the body is at the boundary between biology and society, between drives and discourse, between the sexual and its categorization in terms of power, biography and history, it is the site par excellence for transgressing the constraints of meaning or what social discourse prescribes as normal.” – Nelly Richard, Cultural Theorist

6 THE RHUBARB FESTIVAL

WELCOME TO THE 33RD RHUBARB FESTIVAL Emerging from the work this year are bold and thoughtful considerations of the body: the queer body, the vulnerable body, the resilient body, the body re-politicized, chronicled, and mapped out. Bodies get cold, hot, sweaty, smelly, they feel, they orgasm, they regenerate, they transform, they contract disease, they rebel and surprise, and are not understood by one narrow definition of strength and beauty. They are complex. This year’s Rhubarb investigates the complexities of the body in history and contemporary life, in both intimate and public settings. It gives an opportunity to experience your body in one-to-one exchange, in collective participation, and to witness raw, radical moments with others. Thank you for being here with us.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

THE 2012 PRIDECAB PROJECT Directed by Chy Ryan Spain DEADLINE: Friday, March 2, 2012 Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is calling out to young queer artists to participate in the 2012 Pride Cab Project, twelve-week arts & history project. The project culminates in a collectively created ensemble performance at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s 2012 Queer Pride Festival. Through a series of workshops and interactive events with seasoned, queer activists and artists, we’ll explore both the history of queer culture in our city as well as the realities of what it means to be young and queer today. We’ll use theatre, music, dance, writing, storytelling and performance art to create a cabaret-style show based on what we discover. No previous theatre experience is necessary to participate. We’re looking for queer-identified young people (between 15 and 25 years old) who want to participate in making an original show about queer identity and queer history. Visit our website for guidelines and to download an application form: www.buddiesinbadtimes.com Questions? Please contact Chy Ryan Spain chy@buddiesinbadtimes.com

MISSION STATEMENT – Buddies in Bad Times Theatre strives to fulfill the role of the leading alternative facility-based theatre in Toronto. We are committed to work that challenges the boundaries of theatrical and social convention. As a company we celebrate difference and question assumptions. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is committed to theatrical excellence which it strives for through its play development programs, strong volunteer base, youth-mentorship initiatives and ever increasing wealth of Canadian Queer Talent. MANDATE – Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is a not-for-profit, professional theatre company dedicated to the promotion of Queer Canadian Culture. We are dedicated to producing, developing, and supporting queer theatrical works that speak to one, or both, of the following criteria: 1. QUEER, referring to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered identity, encapsulates the core of our organization. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is a queer-run organization committed to representing the LGBT community by supporting its artists, and by telling its stories. 2. QUEER, referring to anything different or outside of the norm, represents the nature of artistic work presented at 12 Alexander Street. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is dedicated to work that is different, outside the mainstream, challenging in both content and form. (This second definition of Queer is not LGBT-specific)
