ARTATTACK! BMO Financial Group is proud to return as the presenting sponsor for this year’s ARTATTACK!. The funding and promotion of the arts in Canada is an important priority for BMO, and we are especially pleased to be able to bring the visual arts together with the theatre arts this evening in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Respect for the individual and differing viewpoints, inclusion, and diversity are the fundamental values that shape the productions that Buddies in Bad Times stages. They are also values shared by BMO – values that shape our success. We, at BMO, look forward to building on the strength of our ongoing partnership with Buddies in Bad Times so that we can continue to make the voices and experiences of often marginalized people in our community be heard.

Buddies is committed to remaining accessible to our entire community and I am confident that everyone, at any budget, will be able to find some treasure to take home. BUDDIES IN BAD TIMES THEATRE Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically-rigorous, alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. Every year, tens of thousands of people come through our doors to see a play, attend a community event, or have fun with their friends on a Saturday night. Our youth programs provide a safe and empowering space for queer youth to express themselves and discover their community. On our stage, the voices of the marginalized are raised to a level on par with the best in the world. For all these reasons and more, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is an indispensable part of our community. For 35 years, Buddies has challenged and inspired audiences with innovative, cutting edge, and award-winning queer artistic programming. With the support of our community – people like you – we have made an unparalleled contribution to the acceptance and celebration of queer lives in Canada and advanced the possibilities of the theatre into bold new territory. As we move forward together, we will continue to deliver vital programming and services to our city, to provide a home for queer expression, and bring you the very best theatre our city – and our world – has to offer. It is thanks to you that this work is possible. ARTATTACK! is a vital source of funding for our artistic programs, which increasingly rely on donor support. So please, bid early and bid often!

HOW YOU HELP Thanks to your support, Buddies is able to strengthen and empower our queer community through a diversity of activities: • An Artist Residency Program that fosters the development of independent and emerging voices in queer performance by providing free space, as well as artistic, administrative, and technical support. • A commitment to affordable ticket prices – among the lowest in the city – ensuring that everyone has access to the arts. • A Queer Youth Arts Program that provides training and performance opportunities for young queer artists. • Hundreds of free tickets to youth, community groups, and newcomers.

MESSAGE FROM THE CURATORS CHRIS IRONSIDE As we all know, ARTATTACK! is not one of the best parties of the season - it is the best! Hands down. This year’s auction boasts a stellar curatorial line-up of Lauchie Reid, Meera Margaret Singh, Derek Sullivan and Winnie Truong. All four curators, outstanding artists in their own right, have brought together a spectacular roster of Canada’s most exciting emerging, mid-career and established artists and their work for your bidding enjoyment. I would like to extend my thanks to the four curators: Lauchie, Meera, Derek and Winnie – I could not have done this without you! To all of the artists who have generously donated work, thank you. Without your contribution there would be no ARTATTACK! Kris Knight, you are amazing and I am forever thankful that your work is the inaugural ARTATTACK! Limited Edition Print. I look forward to seeing everyone on November 7th, paddles raised high in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre! Good luck and bid often! Chris Ironside is a Toronto-based artist working in photography and drawing. He is interested in representations of masculine ideals and identity through performance, documentation and the staged image. His work has been exhibited across Canada and in the United States. Recently, Chris’ work has appeared in the group show Family Ties at Daniel Faria Gallery and in several publications, including a set of commissioned drawings for Headmaster Magazine and a featured article on his photographic series, Mr. Long Weekend, in Issue 114 of C Magazine. He currently teaches photography in the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) at the University of Guelph and the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University.

KEITH COLE We are back. 2012 was a huge success with the premiere of The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop at ARTATTACK! ‘The Tuck Shop’ (commonly known as…) is an essential part of ARTATTACK! because it offers popular, collectable, and unique objects that are reasonably priced. By visiting the tuck shop you will discover many treasures and tonight is the only night to purchase them. Buy something now! You know you want to…. For your shopping experience, there are some familiar names and items. I have also included several new artists who have donated artworks in support of tonight’s cause. Buddies In Bad Times Theatre is a place like no other. Rich in history and more necessary than ever, Buddies is “that place.” Yes, “that place” where people come to celebrate a success and sometimes come to mourn the loss of a comrade. Yes, “that place” where theatre happens and cabaret happens, contemporary dance happens and spoken word happens. Art happens, performance happens, activism happens, drag happens, and music happens. Sometimes there is more drama backstage then on the mainstage and sometimes there is more comedy behind the curtain then in front of. Yes, Buddies is “that place” where sex, sexuality, and gender is openly explored, questioned, championed, and sometimes toppled over. Buddies is “that place” where conservative ideas are blown to smithereens. Buddies is “that place” where art happens on a daily basis. In the tuck shop you will find collages, textile works, book works, edible art, and wearable art. You will also have the opportunity to hear and interact with art. Pick it up, turn it on, turn it over, and play with it. Autographed art books are available and political works are on offer too. Some pieces are large and others are poetically small. Some works glitter and some may offend. Artist and designer Thom Sevalrud created the tuck shop bags this year. Each bag is a work of art. Check them out. As the tuck shop curator I wish to thank the staff and Board at Buddies, the ARTATTACK! team and all of tonight’s volunteers. My biggest thanks is for the artists – thank you for donating to The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop and for being part of an experience. Keep Art Evil. Stay Weird. Keith Cole’s artistic practice collides with the interdisciplinary art forms of theatre, dance, film and performance and the intersections that they can create. He has a BFA from York University and a MFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU). As an independent scholar his research work explores gossip, hearsay, rumours, theft, speculation and appropriation within the contemporary art world. He is also an advocate for the forcible dismantling of civilization. Just ask around.....

ARTATTACK! LIMITED EDITION PRINT KRIS KNIGHT Ceremony

2013 hand-embellished prints on archival Hahnemuhle PhotoRag paper 11” x 14” image on 16” x 20” paper exclusive to Buddies in Bad Times Theatre price: $500 Buddies is thrilled to offer a commissioned limited-edition series of prints from celebrated Canadian painter Kris Knight. Each print is hand embellished with a unique floral accent by the artist and comes framed courtesy of Akasha Art Projects. Kris’ work examines performance in relation to the construction, portrayal and boundaries of sexual and asexual identities. Drawing from personal histories of rural escapism through imagination, Knight paints disenchanted characters that are lost between youth and adulthood; they hide their secrets, but desperately long to let them go. His mythical and ambiguous portraits are a synthesis of fantasy and real-world memory; they tiptoe between the dichotomies of pretty and menace, hunter and hunted, innocence and the erotic. Throughout Knight’s professional practice, he has created thematic bodies of work that reference historical notions of regality, mysticism, romanticism and symbolism. He often skews these concepts with contemporary interests in androgyny, psychotropic alterations and the post-modern gaze. Knight’s lustrous classical cum illustrative figurative paintings, stride between a contradicting palette of sensual primaries and ghostly pastels, reflecting his adoration for 18th Century French portraiture and polaroid photography. Buddies is deeply grateful to Kris for his generous gift. artwork courtesy of the artist and Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, Toronto framing courtesy of Akasha Art Projects printing by Image Foundry

MESSAGE FROM THE CURATORS DEREK SULLIVAN For the ARTATTACK! auction I approached a diverse group of visual artists making exciting work across wide range of different media (including drawing, photography, sculpture, performance, installation and public interventions). At the same time these artists find the time to actively post images on Instagram (the mobile picture sharing social network), sharing images with a broad network of people. I was curious how this parallel activity worked in relation to their work, how putting an image into circulation via Instagram differed from their art practice, and how the flow of images in a social network make us think differently of images in a gallery. Also, with the opportunity to present work at Buddies in Bad Times it was a moment where these artists would be presenting visual art works in a venue perhaps better known as a theatre and performance space, and thought that there were interesting resonances to work from. Some of the artists have decided to have images they circulated on Instagram printed and framed, while others have made new works that respond to the idea of circulation. All the pieces are absolute gems: poetic, contemplative, thoughtful, playful. I’m thrilled with the works they produced and hope you are too. Derek Sullivan is a Toronto-based visual artist. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at The Power Plant, Toronto, where he was awarded The Power Plant’s 2011 commission; Galerie Emmanuel Hervé, Paris (2012); Galerie Tatjana Pieters, Ghent (2012); Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto (2011); KIOSK, Ghent (2011); University of Waterloo Art Gallery (2010); Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge (2008); and White Columns, New York (2008). He has been included in group exhibitions at Oakville Galleries (2011); La Biennale de Montréal (2011) Casino Luxembourg Forum d’art contemporain (2008); Artists Space, New York (2007); the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2007) and The Power Plant (2005 and 2006). Sullivan was shortlisted for The Sobey Art Award in 2012. You can follow him on Instragram @Desullard.

LAUCHIE REID It’s an honour to be asked to curate this selection of incredible and diverse artists for Buddies in Bad Times. As a collective, Team Macho has always been allied with, and identified as, collaborators and (sweaty, well-muscled) honorary members of Toronto’s incredible queer community, and it’s a pleasure to be able to present a collection of some of our favourite humans. The artists I chose for ARTATTACK! represent what is really incredible about Canada’s art community at this moment: From Adrienne’s meticulously rendered buttocks and Alexandra’s wildyet-controlled compositions, Brad’s ominous and surreal animal portraits and Tristram’s fantastic architectural topologies, to Meghan’s mind-bendingly intricate textures, these brilliant creators display an astounding commitment to craft and a total immersion in their chosen disciplines. This reemergence of craft without the rejection of conceptual values is extremely exciting to see and is indicative of the passion and value these works represent. These people are shit-hot geniuses, basically. Lauchie Reid is a Toronto-based painter and award-winning illustrator. As a founding member of Canadian art collective Team Macho, Reid developed a multi-faceted and diverse approach to image making that expresses a love for outmoded techniques and aesthetics, a bizarre sense of humour, and a sadly sweet view of childhood, family and personality. He has exhibited his work as a part of Team Macho in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Bordeaux, San Francisco, Amsterdam and most recently as part of The Painting Project at Galerie UQAM in Montreal.

MEERA MARGARET SINGH Each of the five talented artists selected have created works that speak to the body (or the allusion to the body), transformed. Whether a meticulous trompe l’oeil paper cut-out of pornography re-shaped into a bird (Robles), an inanimate object with an eerie and evocative fleshlike appearance (Windsor), a faceless child camouflaged in a white room, trapped or trapping, calling its innocence into question (Page), an enigmatic photograph of two women obscured and altered by darkroom alchemy (Harruthoonyan), or a woman whose visage is playfully and hauntingly being overtaken by a disco ball (Kisilevich), these works transcend traditional definitions of the portrait and dive into the uncanny, the strange and the magical. This has been an incredible opportunity to work with each of these five amazing artists as well as the fabulous Chris Ironside in order to support Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Meera Margaret Singh is a visual artist based in Toronto, Canada. She holds a BA in Anthropology (1997), a BFA in Photography (2004) from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada and an MFA (2008) from Concordia University, Montréal, Canada. Singh has been the recipient of several residencies and awards, including Canada Council for the Arts production/creation grants (2009, 2011), Ontario Arts Council Mid-Career grants (2011,2013), a Toronto Arts Council Visual Arts Grant (2010). She has been a selected artist at the Banff Centre (2008); a McCain Artist-in-Residence at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (2009); JACA Residency in Brazil (2012); a visiting artist/instructor at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India (2013). Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and festivals in Canada and the United States. She is currently an instructor in the Photography department at OCAD University in Toronto.

WINNIE TRUONG As an artist and an art lover, I am thrilled to have been asked to curate artists for this year’s ARTATTACK! in support of Buddies In Bad Times Theatre programming. For this year’s exciting auction, I’ve brought together a selection of talented artists from the community whose diverse works are a playful conflation of reality, humor, and the uncanny. I want to thank the artists who have generously and enthusiastically donated their work to the auction, and hope that you find these pieces as thoughtful and engaging as I do. Born in 1988, Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto and where she received a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design’s drawing and painting program. Truong is the recipient of numerous awards, including W.O. Forsythe award, the 401 Richmond Career Launcher prize and the BMO 1st! Art Award for Ontario, through which she exhibited at the MOCCA. Winnie has exhibited internationally in galleries across Toronto, LA, and Copenhagen and in New York where she was also featured VOLTA, NY Art Fair. She is in the collection of The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas.

TROY BROOKS

Figure 3 with Gloves Buddies’ Pick 2013 | watercolour on paper | 14” x 12” estimate: $1,500 My mother was a painter. She painted old barns and bridges. One day when I was two years old, sitting beside her easel, I made a sketch of a woman’s face. I drew that face over and over again through the years. The older I got and the more I was baited and bullied for being like a girl, and the woman in my pictures became aggressive, autocratic and domineering. Out of that came an elaborate pageantry of surreal female characters that violated all the stupid sexual politics that I felt were imposed on me. And in contrast to my constant panic attacks, they were supremely fearless. My parents encouraged me to go to art school but I never wanted to be an artist so the training I never received allowed me, for better or worse, to develop my own technique. My fifth series NEXUS will be showing at Pentimento Gallery November 2013. troybrooks.com

CAROLINE LARSEN Auto Fire

curated by Winnie Truong 2012 | oil on canavas | 31” x 27” estimate: $2,400 Larsen’s body of work explores the perception of space, paint, and surface texture. Over several years she has developed a unique technique for applying paint: her works are created by squeezing undiluted oil paint through a bag outfitted with a serrated stainless steel tip resulting in an exceedingly thick, intricately woven oil painting. Larsen has an undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo and is currently a candidate for a Masters of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Straddling the worlds of art and commercialism, Lander applies a toolbox of visual symbols to engage with subject matter ranging from mass-ly appealing pop culture and iconography, through to conceptual ideas of provocation and the investigation of the process of expectations. Max has shot the faces of Eddie Izzard, Divine Brown, The Barenaked Ladies, Serena Ryder, and one incarnation of Gaga. Her work has been featured in Publications such as VICE, The Globe and Mail, Xtra!, Be (France), Magpie Darling (London), and Curve, as well as countless gallery shows. artwork courtesy of the artist framing courtesy of Akasha Art Projects
