Art Attack! BMO Financial Group is proud to return as the presenting sponsor for this year’s ARTATTACK!. The funding and promotion of the arts in Canada is an important priority for BMO, and we are especially pleased to be able to bring the visual arts together with the theatre arts for this evening in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Respect for the individual and differing viewpoints, inclusion, and diversity are the fundamental values that shape the productions that Buddies in Bad Times stages. They are also values shared by BMO — values that shape our success. We, at BMO, look forward to building on the strength of our ongoing partnership with Buddies in Bad Times so that we can continue to make the voices and experiences of often marginalized people in our community be heard.

Welcome to

Art Attack!

This is an important night for us — thank you all for being here. ARTATTACK! is not only our biggest fundraiser, it is also our chance to introduce you to some exceptional artists and showcase the amazing talent that our community has to offer. Each year, I am overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our community, and by how willing people are to give their time and energy to ensure this night is a success. This event would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many people. I want to thank all the artists, curators, local businesses, and individuals who donated to tonight’s event. Buddies is committed to remaining accessible to our entire community and I am confident that everyone, at any budget, will be able to find some treasure to take home. I want to acknowledge the Buddies staff, board, volunteers and the auction steering committee that have devoted countless hours to this event. It takes a lot of work to put ARTATTACK! on and these are the people who made tonight happen. You have my ongoing gratitude for the time, passion and imagination that you have put into this event. I also want to express thanks to all our sponsors, and especially our Presenting Sponsor, BMO Financial Group, whose support and commitment to ARTATTACK! has been a crucial part of our success. And thank YOU for continuing to support Buddies. When I say we really couldn’t do it without you, I mean it wholeheartedly. Enjoy the evening!

BUDDIES IN BAD TIMES THEATRE

ABOUT BUDDIES in Bad Times Theatre Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically-rigorous, alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. Every year, tens of thousands of people come through our doors to see a play, attend a community event, or have fun with their friends on a Saturday night. Our youth programs provide a safe and empowering space for queer youth to express themselves and discover their community. On our stage, the voices of the marginalized are raised to a level on par with the best in the world. For all these reasons and more, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is an indispensable part of our community. For over 35 years, Buddies has challenged and inspired audiences with innovative, cutting edge, and award-winning queer artistic programming. With the support of our community — people like you — we have made an unparalleled contribution to the acceptance and celebration of queer lives in Canada and advanced the possibilities of the theatre into bold new territory. As we move forward together, we will continue to deliver vital programming and services to our city, to provide a home for queer expression, and to bring you the very best theatre our city — and our world — has to offer. It is thanks to you that this work is possible. ARTATTACK! is a vital source of funding for our artistic programs, which increasingly rely on donor support. So please, bid early and bid often!

HOW YOU HELP Thanks to your support, Buddies is able to strengthen and empower our queer community through a diversity of activities: • An Artist Residency Program that fosters the development of independent and emerging voices in queer performance by providing free space, as well as artistic, administrative, and technical support. • A commitment to affordable ticket prices — among the lowest in the city — ensuring that everyone has access to the arts. • A Queer Youth Arts Program that provides training and performance opportunities for young queer artists. • Hundreds of free tickets to youth, community groups, and newcomers. 3

Curator statements CHRIS IRONSIDE Just when you thought ARTATTACK! couldn’t get any better…it does! This year’s curatorial line-up of April Hickox, Alex McLeod, G N’ S PROJECTS (Gwendolyn Healey & Sean D’Andrade) and Suzanne Carte is pure magic! That magic extends to the diverse and exciting collection the curators have worked to bring together, which showcases some of Canada’s most talented emerging, mid-career and established artists. I would like to thank April, Alex, G N’ S PROJECTS and Suzanne for your curation and commitment — I could not have done this without you. To all of the artists who have donated work, thank you. ARTATTACK! and the success it has become is not, and could never be, possible without your support and generosity. I am forever grateful to Winnie Truong for saying, “yes” two years in a row — last year as a curator and this year for creating the absolutely stunning ARTATTACK! Limited Edition Print. Thank you. I look forward to seeing you all on November 6th with a cocktail, made by Patricia, in one hand and a paddle raised high in the other in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre! curated by Suzanne Carte 2012 | inkjet photo print | 24” x 30” | edition 3 of 8 estimate: $600 Jose Angeles is an emerging queer artist currently residing in Toronto, ON Canada. Many of his work concerns popular culture and mainstream ideologies. They serve either to criticize or explore subject matter within those fields. Gender is one of the main subject matters that he explores in his work. He challenges its form, which serves to criticize why its structure is of concern in Western society. Beauty is also a key topic in his work. Here the artist dives into the world of narcissism which has ruled pop culture and media for many years. In addition to the theme of beauty, the artist also explores aesthetic theory to answer why such practices and ideologies exist. His expertise surrounds the realm of photography and photo-manipulation, part of his practice is working with photography beyond the printed process, and here the artist alters the traditional print into alternative forms. jecasi.com artwork courtesy of the artist framing courtesy of Akau Framing & Art

Maryanne Casasanta’s visual art practice considers the exchange between art and the commonplace, and the space between objects and their documentation. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design University (2005) and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph (2014). Maryanne has had a feature exhibition at the Toronto Image Works Gallery for Contact Photography Festival (2013), and group showings at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Art Institute of Chicago, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art in Winnipeg and at O’Born Contemporary, Xpace Cultural Centre, Art Gallery of Ontario, The Power Plant, and Gallery TPW in Toronto. maryannecasasanta.com

Currently cross-translating between the visual languages of Indian miniaturist art, Blaxploitation, and the images produced by the Hubble Deep Field Telescope, the work becomes a record of impossible discoveries and mythical creations. rajniperera.com artwork courtesy of the artist framing courtesy of Akau Framing & Art

The shop will be selling original sets of multiples and limited edition prints at set prices throughout the night. That means no getting outbid at the last minute — just pick out the items you want, and they will be waiting for you when you check out at the end of the evening. The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop is the brainchild of legendary local artist Keith Cole, and brought to you with the assistance of your official Tuck Shop Visual Merchandiser Shannon Cochrane. Every purchase at the Tuck Shop is sent home in a hand-made, one-of-a-kind bag courtesy of Alison Snowball. Alison is an artist, theorist, and writer, born and based in Toronto. Her work has been exhibited widely in Toronto, including at the AGO and at Xpace Cultural Centre. Her writing has appeared in Kapsula and her ‘tweethis’ is available on Twitter @immaterealities. Alison holds an MA in Contemporary Art History from OCAD U and a BComm from Dalhousie University, and she works as the Import Export Coordinator at Museumpros Art Services.
