Welcome to ARTATTACK! This is an important night for us — thank you all for being here. ARTATTACK! is not only our biggest fundraiser, it is also our chance to introduce you to some exceptional artists and showcase the amazing talent that our community has to offer. I am overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our community, and by how willing people are to give their time, energy, and talents to ensure this night is a success. This event would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many people. I want to thank all the artists, curators, local businesses, and individuals who donated to tonight’s event. I want to acknowledge the Buddies staff, board, volunteers, and the auction steering committee that have devoted countless hours to this event. It takes a lot of work to put ARTATTACK! on and these are the people who made tonight happen. You have my ongoing gratitude for the time, passion, and imagination that you have put into this event. I also want to express thanks to all our sponsors, and especially our Presenting Sponsor, BMO Financial Group, whose support and commitment to ARTATTACK! has been a crucial part of our success. And thank YOU for continuing to support Buddies. When I say we really couldn’t do it without you, I mean it wholeheartedly. Enjoy the evening!

ABOUT BUDDIES

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically-rigorous, alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. For 37 years, Buddies has challenged and inspired audiences with innovative, cutting edge, and award-winning queer artistic programming. With the support of our community – people like you – we have made an unparalleled contribution to the acceptance and celebration of queer lives in Canada and advanced the possibilities of the theatre into bold new territory. It is thanks to you that this work is possible. ARTATTACK! is a vital source of funding for our artistic programs, which increasingly rely on donor support. So bid early and bid often!

HOW YOU HELP Thanks to your support, Buddies is able to strengthen and empower our queer community through a diversity of activities.

A FULL SEASON OF QUEER THEATRE

Every year, our community of donors play a vital role in bringing a full season of artistically rigorous queer theatre to the stage. These productions are consistently met with critical and popular acclaim, and introduce Toronto audiences to some of the most daring, exciting, and important artists our city has to offer.

A VITAL ARTS PROGRAM FOR YOUTH

Our Queer Youth Arts Program is a safe and empowering space for over 700 queer-identified young people every year. This is a place where young people can get free access to our artists and artistic programs, and to gain the skills and confidence to create their own work through a year-round program of performance and training opportunities.

A COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY

Buddies firmly believes that everyone should have access to the arts. That is why our ticket prices remain among the lowest in the city, and why we have several programs in place to provide affordable or free tickets to people who need them. We also offer our events spaces at little to no cost to many charitable groups every year for their programming and activities.

NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT

Each year, the Buddies Residency Program supports dozens of artists in the creation of new theatrical works. We provide resident artists with the tools to create and the space to experiment, ensuring that queer artists in Toronto are given what they need to succeed.

The CURATORs CHRIS IRONSIDE “It is happening again.” Although it hasn’t been a twenty-five year wait, the arrival of this year’s edition of ARTATTACK! is just as hotly anticipated and exciting as a “damn fine cup of coffee” and a slice of cherry pie from the Double R Diner. I am grateful that for the past four years I have been fortunate to work with a passionate and engaging group of curators and this year is no exception. Kotama Bouabane, Maryanne Casasanta, Sandra Rechico, and Logan MacDonald have curated a beautifully cohesive collection that showcases the diverse range of talents by those artists who have so generously donated their work to this year’s auction. The curators and the participating artists are what make ARTATTACK! the success it is. Kotama, Maryanne, Sandra, Logan and all of the artists – thank you!! The Artist’s Limited Edition, which was launched two years ago, has proven to be an ARTATTACK! highlight. It is such an honour to have had Alex McLeod so enthusiastically come on board as this year’s artist. Alex’s ‘Beyond Life And Death’ wonderfully pays homage to this year’s ARTATTACK! theme, Twin Peaks. This Artist’s Limited Edition is an absolute visual feast, as is all of Alex’s work. Thank you, Alex! I would like to thank the fantastic group of people that make up the steering committee. Mark, Keith, Francisco, John, Shawn, and Alysha – it has been an absolute pleasure!

KEITH COLE The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop is now four years old! Each year the tuck shop gets busier, more popular and even more delightful. This year is no exception thanks to guest curator Paul Dotey and his keen and queer eyes. Check out what he has gathered for your visual pleasure. My thanks go to my fellow ARTATTACK! committee members, the staff, volunteers and board at Buddies and all the many ARTATTACK! guests. Johnnie Walker joins us this year as the tuck shop’s visual merchandiser and Andrew Harwood designs the exclusive tuck shop bag for 2015. My biggest thanks goes to the artists who have generously donated work – thank you x 1,000. Wendy Coburn (1963-2015) was a heretic, a revolutionary, a rebel. She was also a truthsayer, educator and a great and brilliant artist. With her gone the fags, queers, and art communities have taken a hit but it is the dykes that have really experienced a tremendous loss. This one is going to hurt for a long time. I would like to dedicate the 2015 tuck shop to Wendy Coburn and her vast and varied contributions to this world. RIP Wendy. Want to know more about Keith Cole… just ask around.

On November 5th, listen to the Log Lady’s log when it says bid high and bid often in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre! The CURATORs

KOTAMA BOUABANE I’m very excited and honored to be working with Buddies in Bad Times again. I’ve donated pieces to previous events and I’m thrilled to be a guest curator this time round. The artists I have chosen to participate and who have generously donated artworks, all come from diverse backgrounds with specific points of view. They each have their own distinct visual vocabulary when approaching issues associated with identity, representation and place. From Logan’s delicately drawn foliage, to Wong’s humorous text, to Rai’s and Whalen’s playful abstractions and Seger’s vulnerable portrait, the works encompass a certain vibrancy, tenderness and warmth. I hope that you enjoy and appreciate all the pieces as much as I do. Kotama Bouabane has an MFA in Studio Arts, Photography from Concordia University, Montreal and a AOCAD from OCAD. His work has been exhibited in many galleries including Centre A (Vancouver), Parisian Laundry (Montreal) & Jen Bekman (New York). He has received awards and grants and has been published in Prefix Photo and Flash Forward through the Magenta Foundation. He lives and works in Toronto and has a upcoming exhibit in 2016 at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography. He is represented by ESP - Erin Stump Projects.

PAUL DOTEY The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop places Buddies in a special position in Toronto’s art scene, and I’m proud to help curate this year’s collection. The Tuck Shop gives everybody the opportunity to own original works at an accessible price point. It can be that cute sexy little thing you don’t know you need until you see it; it can also be the first piece of art you buy, in what turns into a lifelong relationship with owning and collecting artwork. Thank you to all the artists who have donated work this year, and thank you to everyone who grabs that special something. Long live the Tuck Shop. Paul has worked in Canadian design for over a decade, creating books, maps and illustrations that convey ideas in new and innovative ways. Working from his studio at home in Toronto, he is currently drawing whatever he has been asked.

MARYANNE CASASANTA It is my pleasure to have been asked to participate in this year’s ARTATTACK! auction as a curator and in previous years, as an artist. I’m so grateful that a theatre and performance venue such as Buddies in Bad Times has a place here in Toronto and it is an honour for me to support its programming. The artists that I approached for this year’s exciting event each touch on elements of chance, time, intuition and the ineffable. From Rachel Crummey’s tender, dissolving line work, to a diptych by Sarah Sands Phillips that suggests an expanding musical landscape that stretches out and off the frame. Claire Scherzinger’s restrained palate in Hermes of Verses allows your eye to slowly drift along a gorgeous stream of lavender while both Sarah Bodri and Susy Oliveira’s photographs offer sensual compositions over water. Each individual piece by these five talented female artists not only asks the viewer to contemplate the work, but also the phenomenological experience of looking itself. I have been seduced by each of these works and hope that you find yourself feeling the same. Maryanne Casasanta is a photo-based artist working in installation and print media. She earned her BFA from OCAD University (2005) and holds an MFA from the University of Guelph (2014). Maryanne has exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo exhibition at Erin Stump Projects (Toronto) and group showings at Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), and The Power Plant (Toronto).

LOGAN MACDONALD My intention with this curatorial selection was to present to you artworks that are both visually gratifying as well as conceptually intriguing. There is something mesmerizing about each of the works. I chose artworks that I felt your eye would be drawn towards and have a hard time leaving. What I love most is how they each have an easy aesthetic quality, while they also present their own unique gravitas – which creates a kind of tension that makes the work that much more exciting and engaging. These artworks are guilty pleasures; they will be the kind of artworks you will love the most, and they will make you greedy. I recommend you install these works in a private location in your home—satisfyingly located in a secret spot where only you enjoy them. Cecilia Berkovic is a brilliant artist with an outstanding capability for creating work in just about any medium while maintaining her own artistic vision. I begged Berkovic for the piece in this auction because the image seems subtly queer, and it is also powerfully sexy and funny. It’s flawless. Shaua Born is an artist with an exceptional talent for rendering excellent realistic portraits with a twist – the work I selected for this auction was taken from of series of drawings based on men she would like to fuck – and let’s just say she has great taste in men. I connected with New York based artist Mark Mulroney to select one of his original paintings. Mulroney is a master at executing slick cartoon/comic imagery that he playfully subverts to explore pornography, experimentalism, and violent representations not meant for children. Hazel Meyer is a powerhouse of an artist who has made a name for herself as someone with a totally unique aesthetic by creating phenomenal pop-infused installations and images. The piece I selected from Meyer is her reference to a part of Toronto’s LGBT history and is a very limited edition hand-made lithography print. I also found this amazing drawing by Newfoundland artist Jerry Ropson, which is a cheeky homage to acclaimed artist Dieter Roth. Ropson’s works are often artifacts of humorous storytelling articulated though drawing, sculpture, and text – so it’s no wonder his piece is so witty and personal. Logan MacDonald is a visual artist and curator. MacDonald holds a MFA from York University (2010) and a BFA from Concordia University (2006). His work has exhibited in galleries worldwide and has been included in publications including C Magazine, LTTR and Documenta 12. Most recently, MacDonald curated Attesting Resistance an exhibition for the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, exhibited as part of the group exhibition Taking [a]Part at Mercer Union, and collaborated with Hazel Meyer to produce Ripping Skin, Tearing Fabric an exhibition at Forest City Gallery, London, Ontario.

SANDRA RECHICO What an honour it is to be asked to be one of the ARTATTACK! curators in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. When approached, I thought of how Jenny Stevens referred to Nick Cave as The Grand Lord of Gothic Lushness in a review of ‘Push the Sky Away’. All five of my invited artists could adopt that moniker. I selected artists that have a mannered sense of Glitter and literary Gothic in their work. Andrew Harwood’s sequinned photos definitely suit. Catherine Heard’s drawing on silk is eerily Gothic and Nadia Belerique takes it on in an abstract sense. Luke Painter makes drawings that remind me of elaborate stage sets for 19th century operas and Lorna Mills has Glitter with a Gothic Glitch and a healthy dose of porn to boot. All works that any Grand Lord of Gothic Lushness would love to own. Sandra Rechico’s studio practice in drawing, photography, installation and object-making regularly looks at maps, routing, wayfaring, navigation and distance She is also interested in the residue and detritus from walks, and their representation. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada. Her work has been featured in numerous publications and is held in many public and private collections. Rechico has exhibited across Canada, in Europe and Australia.

From the monumental to the modest, Hazel Meyer’s projects range from large installations to small woven tags meant for an audience of one. She has collaborated with teens, badminton players, composers, her mother, and artists for projects that are devoted to a forever shifting ratio of endurance, transgression, and laughs, as ways of being in one’s body and the world. Recent solo exhibitions include Muscle Panic at the MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie, ON), No Theory No Cry at Art Metropole (Toronto), and Walls to the Ball at La Centrale (Montréal). Hazel’s work has been included in Separation Penetrates at the Dutch Art Institute (Netherlands), Temperamental at the Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto Scarborough, and Schlaegermusik with Annesley Black for Zukunftsmusik (Stuttgart). Karly is a Toronto based artist and curator going into their last year of study in the Visual Arts Program at York University. Having exhibited in Toronto at pop-up exhibitions, Karly’s artistic practice is often a means towards creating a sense of community among peers. By building an art practice around awkward and delightful physical experiences and encouraging others to relate through their own bodily experiences, she finds opportunities to create or enhance meaningful connections with and between others. These physical experiences are interpreted into photographic, print, or performance pieces. Having worked for the last three years in gallery settings, Karly has had the opportunity to work with both emerging artists from Toronto as well as established artists. Curatorial projects include co-curating Stuff: The Culture of Obsolescence at Samuel J. Zacks Gallery and playing a supporting role in Heather Cassils’ Labour Intensive, a performative piece through AGYU’s Creative Campaigning: Performance as Resistance. Having collaborated with and supported other emerging artists in the Toronto area, Karly considers her artistic practice secondary, if not identical, to curatorial praxis. artwork courtesy of the artist framing courtesy of Akasha Art Projects
