x WELCOME TO ARTATTACK! This is an important night for us – thank you all for being here. ARTATTACK! is not just our biggest fundraiser, it is also a chance for us to introduce you to some exceptional artists and showcase the amazing talent that our community has to offer. I am overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of these artists, and by how willing people are to give their time and energy to ensure this annual event is a success. Tonight would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many artists, curators, local businesses, and individuals who donated their time and talents. Buddies is committed to keeping ARTATTACK! accessible to all and I am confident that everyone, at any budget, will be able to find a treasure to take home. I want to thank the Buddies staff, board, volunteers, and the auction steering committee who have all devoted countless hours to this event.
It takes a lot of work, passion, and imagination to make ARTATTACK! happen and these are the people who made tonight possible. I also want to acknowledge all our sponsors, and especially our Presenting Sponsor, BMO Financial Group, whose support and commitment to ARTATTACK! has been a crucial part of our success. And thank YOU for continuing to support Buddies. When I say we really couldn’t do it without you, I mean it wholeheartedly.
Enjoy the evening!

THE CURATORS Francisco Alvarez I’m very happy to return for my 3rd ARTATTACK! This year’s colourful art collection was shaped by our happy Art Camp theme. I am very humbled by the continued generosity of our artists and galleries, many of whom have participated multiple times to support the incredible programming at Buddies, the world’s largest and oldest LGBTQ theatre company. This is, without doubt, Toronto’s most outrageous and fun art auction, so relax, drink up and bid freely. You’ll bring home a fabulous art piece and great memories.
Francisco Alvarez is the Director of Galleries at OCAD University. He spent 14 years at the Royal Ontario Museum, where he was Director of Communications and later led the Institute for Contemporary Culture. At Heritage Toronto, he oversaw the delivery of Toronto’s walking tours, historical plaques, and the Heritage Toronto Awards. He has chaired many events including Dancers for Life, Inside Out Film Festival, Pride Toronto and the Pan American Food Festival, serves on the Artistic Advisory Committee of Nuit Blanche, and was a co-founder of Nuit Rose queer arts festival.
Gustavo Cerquera Benjumea Poylan, to Trudy Erin Elmore’s digital baroque, to Dahae Song’s fractured portraits, the works are bold, confident, and command attention. I want to thank all the artists – it is a privilege to showcase your work.
It is really exciting to be a part of this year’s ARTATTACK! I have been an instructor at OCAD University for the last three years and I am constantly astounded by the incredible amount of talent I get to be around – so for this year’s collection I wanted to highlight artwork by current students and recent graduates. The work varies from traditional painting to digital prints or a combination of the two. From Margaux Smith’s and Lindsay Ferris’ striking oil paintings, to the subversive humour of Nicholas Zirk and Kayla
Gustavo Cerquera Benjumea is a Colombian-born Toronto-based digital media artist, animator, and teacher. He specializes in computer animation, video installation, and drawing. He teaches at OCAD and Brock University.

Keith Cole many weirdos, shoppers, donors and volunteers. Special thanks to the curious and the risk-takers. The tuck shop is grateful for the support from the ARTATTACK! committee, the staff and Board of Directors of Buddies. To the many artists who have donated to the tuck shop over the past five years – my biggest thanks. Carpe Diem. Stay Weird.
Tempus Fugit. Happy 5th Anniversary to The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop. ARTATTACK! and Buddies In Bad Times Theatre remain standing tall. The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop opened in 2012 and here we are at five years old. Completely necessary and wildly popular – just like Rock Hudson himself. The “Tuck Shop” (as it has become lovingly known) was created as a quiet act. An act to make an offer for all to participate in ARTATTACK! An invitation to what has grown to be one of the most talked about events in Toronto’s vibrant theatre and art worlds. Thanks to the
Keith Cole’s self-loving interests include masturbation and homosexuality. Just ask around.
Paul Dotey by geography, but by our hearts and ideas. I hope you enjoy and support. xo
Welcome to the 2016 Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop! This has been an important year for the LGBTQ community, in the best and worst ways. We celebrate our victories and remember those we lost. We remember that we’re an army of lovers, and that we can support our community in so many ways. The art in this years’ shop is so varied, and reminds me that we are not connected
Paul Dotey is proud to be returning as a curator of the Tuck Shop, and to introduce international artists to the mix. He’s worked as an illustrator and designer for over a decade, and is delighted to bring some love to Buddies for another year.
Mary Tremonte Mary Tremonte is an artist, educator, and DJ based in Toronto via Pittsburgh. A founding member of Justseeds Artists' Cooperative, she works with "printmaking in the expanded field," including printstallation, interactive silkscreen printing in public space, and wearable artist multiples such as queer scout badges. As DJ Mary Mack she strives to make safe(r) spaces on dance floors for embodying a body politic with pleasure. With Justseeds and independently, Mary has exhibited, presented lectures and workshops, and performed in Toronto, Pittsburgh, throughout the United States, and internationally. Formerly the youth programs coordinator at The Andy Warhol Museum, she values art education as a means of youth empowerment and social change. Through her work she aims to create temporary utopias and sustainable commons through pedagogy, collaboration, visual pleasure and serious fun.
I am very happy to support Buddies in Bad Times Theatre by inviting artists to participate in their annual benefit ARTATTACK!, particularly with this year’s Summer Camp theme. I love Buddies. It is a true intergenerational queer art and community space. The artists I chose, B.G-Osbourne, Patrick Cruz, Eli Howey, and Hazel Meyer, each work through identities and the physicality of bodies, through gender, sexuality, culture, or an intersectional (intestinal) approach to the places where identities meet. This auction raises funds to ever extend Buddies’ reach of programming to those most marginalized – the racialized, queer, trans youth, who are among our community’s most vulnerable. Thank you to the artists for donating, in the spirit of institutional resource extension. This sharing of your labour and creative brilliance extends opportunities to others. At Buddies everybody knows your name and loves your flame!

7 THE ARTATTACK! LIMITED EDITION PRINT We’re thrilled that local art hero James Fowler accepted our commission to create this year’s exclusive limited edition print. Each of the twenty prints is hand embellished in about 25 areas. He has also hidden the word ‘LOVE’ in a different place on each original to make it one-of-a-kind, gives us a candy-coloured aerial view of our favourite gaybourhood and downtown, combining representation and abstraction with humour and wit. In 2010, James founded the 10x10 photography project, an annual portrait exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel featuring ten of Canada’s talented LGBTQ photographers celebrating 100 queer Canadians who have contributed to the arts. James also co-curated Church Street Murals, working with Toronto City Hall to create a legacy project for Toronto World Pride 2014. He is a founding member of Nuit Rose, a late night queer-focused art and performance event during Toronto Pride. James is currently working on Boyhood, a series of painted aerial views of international gay neighbourhoods using the colour palettes of boys’ toys and 1970’s children’s television shows.
James Fowler’s art practice is complemented by his curatorial pursuits and his deep involvement with the LGBTQ community. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and English from York University and had an early career in photography and film. He exhibits regularly with Oeno Gallery and has maintained a studio practice since 2007. James has written about art and technology for Akimbo and has participated in public discussions about social media and the arts. He is a regular consultant for arts organizations on best practices and has written comprehensive social media policy for institutions in Ontario.

y A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR BMO Financial Group is proud to return as the presenting sponsor for this year’s ARTATTACK!. The funding and promotion of the arts in Canada is an important priority for BMO, and we are especially pleased to be able to bring the visual arts together with the theatre arts for this evening in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Respect for the individual and differing viewpoints, inclusion, and diversity are the fundamental values that shape the productions that Buddies in Bad Times stages. They are also values shared by BMO – values that shape our success. We at BMO look forward to building on the strength of our ongoing partnership with Buddies in Bad Times so that we can continue to amplify the voices and experiences of often marginalized people in our community.

Zirk’s practice centres on painting, using collage as a foundation to build his images. Humour is the driving force in his work, drawing the viewer in, enabling them to appreciate the more complex ideas contained within. Zirk considers himself a painter, but his practice is not limited to painting in the traditional sense, often embodying sculpture/ installation, photo, collage, and video. His work explores the slipperiness and malleability of memory, and how it affects the construction of identities and our perceptions of reality. Zirk has a particular interest in trauma (grand, micro, perceived or real) and the myriad outcomes it has on our future selves. This instability of reality as grounded in the mistruth of memory is the genesis for his work. nicholaszirk.com

Her work has been showcased in Canadian Art Magazine, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Now and Grid Magazines, among other publications. Her installations have been funded by the Toronto and Ontario Arts Councils and exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions through private and public galleries such as Toronto’s Angell Gallery the Cambridge Galleries, ARTSPACE and Thunder Bay’s Definitely Superior.
