WELCOME TO ARTATTACK
This is an important night for us – thank you all for being here. ArtAttack is not only our biggest fundraiser, it is also our chance to introduce you to some exceptional artists and showcase the amazing talent that our community has to offer. I am overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of these artists, and by how willing people are to give their time and energy to ensure this night is a success. This event would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many people. I want to acknowledge the artists, curators, local businesses, and individuals who donated to tonight’s event. Buddies is committed to keeping ArtAttack accessible to all and I am confident that everyone, at any budget, will be able to find a treasure to take home. I want to thank the Buddies staff, board, volunteers, and the auction steering committee that have devoted countless hours to this event. It takes a lot of work to make ArtAttack happen and these are the people who made tonight possible. You have my ongoing gratitude
for the time, passion and imagination that you have put into this event. I also want to acknowledge all our sponsors, and especially our Presenting Sponsor, BMO Financial Group, whose support and commitment to ArtAttack has been a crucial part of our success. And thank YOU for continuing to support Buddies. When I say we really couldn’t do it without you, I mean it wholeheartedly. Enjoy the evening!

Chris Ironside It’s good to come home! The experience of retuning to ArtAttack has been a wonderful one, which has been made all the more special by the fantastic steering committee, curators, and artists that have worked so hard and given so much of themselves in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
The curators
This year’s curatorial line-up of Steven Beckly, Elaine Gaito, Darren Rigo, and Josh Vettivelu is inspiring! That inspiration extends to the diverse and exciting collection the curators have worked to bring together, which showcases some of Canada’s most talented emerging, mid-career, and established artists. I would like to thank Steven, Elaine, Darren, and Josh for your curation and commitment. To all of the artists who have donated work, thank you! ArtAttack could never be possible without your support and generosity. The Artist’s Limited Edition, which was launched four years ago, continues to be an ArtAttack highlight. It is such an honour to have had Daryl Vocat come on board as this year’s artist. Daryl’s Save Lives, like his queer reworking of imagery from Boy Scout handbooks, looks for signs and signals of queerness where they might not exist. Thank you, Daryl for this absolutely beautiful work. On November 9th, I look forward to seeing you bidding high and bidding often in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre! Chris Ironside is a Toronto-based artist dealing in the currency of gay images. He draws and photographs, decontextualizes song lyrics and glitters with aplomb. He exhibits his drawings and photographs throughout North America. Recent commissions, publications, exhibitions and installations include Headmaster Magazine, C Magazine, Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, the Art on Paper Fair in New York City, The Window Gallery in Toronto, and Culture Days in London. Currently, he teaches photography in the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University.

Paul Dotey It’s my most favourite time of the year! Each autumn I look forward to this night, when creative people join forces for Buddies. Each year is different; with its own style, substance, and antics, but every year has the same goal: to support the programs that Buddies offers, and to support the people that make Buddies so great. In an age when forces conspire to make us feel small and ineffective, Buddies and ArtAttack remind us that we are here to use our creative power to affect change. Our talents give life to our ideas and our ideas help move mountains. I’m so proud to bring these artists into the Buddies fold, and I thank them for their time and skills. Here’s to another amazing year. xo Paul Paul Dotey has worked in publishing and design for over a decade, creating maps, books and illustrations for clients in Canada and internationally. He is currently drawing whatever he has been asked.

Steven Beckly Having been a part of ArtAttack in the past as an artist, I was thrilled when Buddies asked me to join this year’s curatorial team. I’m moved by the generosity of Phu Bui, Patrick Cruz, Jihee Min, Ryan Park, and Shellie Zhang, five exciting artists who share Toronto as their primary home yet whose works reach beyond their geographical borders. Their concerns range from the intimate to the global, each thinking about their unique place in today’s rapidly changing and interconnected world. Jihee Min’s vibrant cyanotype and Patrick Cruz’s enigmatic painting show the artists exploring their crosscultural identities against a shifting contemporary landscape. Ryan Park’s karaoke video and Shellie Zhang’s intricate cutout playfully combine image and text, altering and morphing Eastern stereotypes into cheeky new forms. Lastly, Phu Bui’s spectrum painting magnifies the beautiful patterns of nature, pointing to the deep, cosmic bond that connects all of us. I’m very excited to share these five incredible artworks with you, the public. Bid often and generously—your support ensures the continuation of Buddies’ vital legacy! Steven Beckly is a Toronto-based artist and photographer. He received his MFA from the University of Guelph. Active in the local arts and queer communities, Steven has donated artwork to various LGBTQ+ organizations including the AIDS Committee of Toronto, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, the LGBT Youthline, and the Canadian Lesbian & Gay Archives.

Josh Vettivelu The works in this selection all look at what happens to love (for another, for self, for place) over time. Anique Jordan’s Salt is a photoseries of the artist standing in places from the stories of women in her family, archiving the inheritance of their resilience. Jeff Bierk’s pensive cyanotype, titled 2010 - 2016, gives the viewer a time frame and an image; 5 years and a hospital curtain. Ness Lee’s Sinking Ships (Let’s Go Together) creates an internal world where parts of the self become indistinguishable from the landscape. Andil Gosine’s God’s on the Beach series documents the remnants of prayers that were meant for the sea. Lastly, Vera Frenkel’s video, Once Near Water: Notes from the Scaffolding Archive, is a seminal piece of Canadian video art about a city cut off from its lake and in trouble, where scaffolding serves as metaphor for both aspiration and loss. A heartfelt thank you to the artists involved for your complex and touching work and a thank you to Buddies for providing the opportunity to bring them together.

Keith Cole Still going strong after 6 years! The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop (“the tuck shop”) was once considered the fringe of the fringe but now we have quickly become the backbone of the entire operation! Not quite - but still super necessary, mondo interesting, sexy and all things cool. Now, you might ask… How Come? Why? How Did They Do It? Easy. Because of the artists, donors, buyers, volunteers and YOU. The Tuck Shop has exploded onto the art scene and is the desire of many. Envied and copied a dozen times over - the Tuck Shop at ArtAttack is authentic. Thanks to the 2017 ArtAttack committee, staff and Board of Directors at Buddies, the curious, the queerious and especially the donating artists. Keep it real. Keith Cole is scheduled to teach a free 5-day course lecture on Jacqueline Susann’s “Valley Of The Dolls” in 2018 through FADO Performance Art Centre. Registration is limited. There is a free copy of “The Valley Of The Dolls” included. The classroom is a hotel room in a downtown Super8 Hotel. Keith Cole is gay. Just ask around…

Darren Rigo I’m very excited to become more closely involved with the Buddies Auction this year bringing five new artists to the stage. For my selection I looked to rising talents who are using their mediums in innovative ways. Each of their works express a traditional aesthetic appeal but upon closer inspection you begin to pick up on how they subvert, combine and redefine traditional methods of creation. They are all pieces one can return to again and again and still notice new things and make new connections. I’m thankful to these artists for generously donating their work, to the collectors for showing their support and to Buddies for throwing the most exciting auction in town.

About Buddies Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is Toronto’s leading destination for artistically-rigorous, alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage. For 38 years, Buddies has challenged and inspired audiences with innovative, cutting edge, and award-winning queer artistic programming. With the support of our community – people like you – we have made an unparalleled contribution to the acceptance and celebration of queer lives in Canada and advanced the possibilities of the theatre into bold new territory. It is thanks to you that this work is possible. ArtAttack is a vital source of funding for our artistic programs, which increasingly rely on donor support. So bid early and bid often!
HOW YOU HELP Thanks to your support, Buddies is able to strengthen and empower our queer community through a diversity of activities.
A FULL SEASON OF QUEER THEATRE Every year, our community of donors play a vital role in bringing a full season of artistically rigorous queer theatre to the stage. These productions are consistently met with critical and popular acclaim, and introduce Toronto audiences to some of the most daring, exciting, and important artists our city has to offer.
NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT Each year, the Buddies Residency Program supports dozens of artists in the creation of new theatrical works. We provide resident artists with the tools to create and the space to experiment, ensuring that queer artists in Toronto are given what they need to succeed.
A VITAL ARTS PROGRAM FOR YOUTH Our Queer Youth Arts Program is a safe and empowering space for over 700 queer-identified young people every year. This is a place where young people can get free access to our artists and artistic programs, and to gain the skills and confidence to create their own work through a year-round program of performance and training opportunities.
A COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY Buddies firmly believes that everyone should have access to the arts. That is why our ticket prices remain among the lowest in the city, and why we have several programs in place to provide affordable or free tickets to people who need them. We also offer our events spaces at little to no cost to many charitable groups every year for their programming and activities.

With Save Lives, Daryl Vocat takes the intimacy of a life-saving act and makes it explicitly queer. For most of us, that life-saving act happened the first time we stepped onto the dance floor at a gay bar. The disco ball, our sun; and for the rest of that night, we found home. Daryl Vocat, born in Regina, Saskatchewan, is a visual artist living and working in Toronto. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, and his Master of Fine Arts degree at York University in Toronto. His solo exhibitions include the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina, Thrush Holmes Empire, Open Studio, and York Quay Gallery in Toronto, SNAP gallery and Latitude 53 in Edmonton, Eastern Edge Gallery in St John’s, Blackburn 20/20 in New York City, and Malaspina Printmakers Gallery in Vancouver. He has participated in several group exhibitions both in Canada and beyond, including an internationally touring exhibition titled Further, Artists From Printmaking at the Edge.
His work has been acquired by the New York Public Library Print Collection, National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives, The Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in NYC, The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery permanent collection in British Columbia, The Saskatchewan Arts Board permanent collection, and the City of Toronto Fine Art collection. His artwork has been published in YYZine from YYZ Gallery in Toronto, and Printmaking at the Edge by Richard Noyce, published in Great Britain. darylvocat.com artwork courtesy of the artist. framing courtesy of Akasha Art Projects printing by Image Foundry

Adam Brooks is an OCAD graduate living and working in Toronto. Working with the male figure Adam conveys ideas of queerness and the contemporary consumption of imagery. The work presents male figures in an aggressive, physical interaction. The figures collide and support each other expressing the dichotomy of male intimacy, competition and comradery. The visceral quality of the materials further exhibit the passion, sensuality and sexuality of each encounter as well as the dynamic nature of the male form.
Alison Postma is an artist living and working in Toronto. She graduated from the University of Guelph’s Studio Art Undergraduate Program in 2016 and has since been showing work locally and internationally. Her work is primarily photographic and sculptural, using video as a medium in-between the two. Postma’s practice focuses on the translation of objects between these two and three dimensional planes and what is lost and gained in the process.

Andil Gosine, PhD, is Associate Professor in Artistic Practices and Politics at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University. His practices explore imbrications of ecology, desire and power. Recent solo exhibitions include Coolie Coolie Viens at Glenhyrst and McIntosh galleries (2017 & 2018), and All the Flowers at McLaughlin (2018). His contributed work to this auction, Untitled No. 1, emerged from a consideration of shifting articulations of religion and nature, through observation of the environmental work of “progressive Hindu organization” Sadhana in Jamaica Bay, Queens.
Allanah Vokes transforms information and imagery through elaborate systems of analysis, dissection, notation, and translation, creating works that sit between representation and abstraction. Central to her practice is an investigation into the nuances of human pattern-seeking behaviour: how we engage these behaviours when making sense of art, and how we use them to navigate visual culture during the age of too many images. She received her BA Honours from the University of Guelph and placed first in the University’s 47th Annual Juried Art Show.

Often including wild animals and multicolored figures bound or fettered together, Balint Zsako’s erotically charged works possess a shamanistic quality. Working in mixed media, collage, painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography, Zsako has recently focused on watercolors that feature intertwined naked figures. The artist’s practice also involves soliciting audience participation. In a recent exhibition, he placed his paintings loosely on a shelf and allowed viewers to rearrange their order, inviting them to construct new narratives for his work.

Ryan Park works with the vernacular and its potential to evoke social and personal histories, associations, and values. Far east, far out recombines eastern and western pop-cultural products in both familiar and disparate ways to comment on masculine aesthetic reinvention, and ideas of the alien. Recording distortions, breakup in the video and magnetic audio hiss, interfere with clear transmission, suggesting distances of space, time and culture. Park’s work has been exhibited and screened in Canada, the US, and internationally.
