WELCOME TO ARTATTACK

For 40 years, Buddies has challenged and inspired audiences with innovative, cutting-edge, award-winning queer artistic programming. With the support of our community – people like you – we have made an unparalleled contribution to the acceptance and celebration of queer lives in Canada and advanced the possibilities of theatre into bold new territory.

on a show or just pay the bills, someone would throw a party, everyone would buy a few drinks, and we’d make enough money to get by. This idea that we can support what we love and have fun doing it is never more present than it is tonight. So many people - visual artists, theatre makers, volunteers, neighbours, friends, and supporters - come out to raise money for vital artistic and community programming in a huge, raucous celebration of contemporary art.

We’ve also thrown our fair share of parties. I love a party at Buddies because it brings together such an eclectic mix of queer folks. There is such an incredible community here at Buddies, and when they all come together, it’s magic. It’s this community that makes everything we do possible, and has allowed us to grow in to the largest queer theatre in the world. Because parties keep the lights on here at Buddies. So many times in our history, when we’ve needed money to put

So thank you for being here and for supporting Buddies. We couldn’t do this without you.

Yours,

Evalyn Parry Artistic Director 4

Steven Beckly is magic. To be precise, he is a magician when it comes to capturing light; not only from the technical standpoint of making an exposure, but from rendering light as subject. Beckly’s There’s a land that I heard of explores and uses light in the manner in which he so beautifully does throughout his practice and in so doing plays with and cultivates the poetics of both desire and intimacy. The wood paneling, a teenage memory of a suburban basement caught in the warm glow of early fall afterschool light. There are no ruby slippers to be found over this rainbow, but rather a dusting of glitter and that which exists outside of the photographic frame: a pot of gold that for many of us in the LGBT community, over the past forty years, is Buddies in – Bad Times Theatre.

Chris Ironside Co-Chair, ArtAttack Curatorial Committee

Steven Beckly is a Toronto-based artist and photographer. Recent solo exhibitions include Meirenyu at Daniel Faria Gallery (Toronto) and A tender touch can bend the straightest of things at Eastern Edge Gallery (St. John’s). CHRIS IRONSIDE Lordy, lordy look who’s forty! As Buddies In Bad Times Theatre marks their 40th anniversary this season, ArtAttack! celebrates that it has become one of the most anticipated (and most fun) auction parties of the season. Year after year the live auction and Tuck Shop boast an incredible line up of art from the best emerging, mid-career, and established Canadian artists, and this year is no exception! So much hard work goes into bringing ArtAttack! to life and there are whole bunch of wonderful people who I want to thank for their help in doing so. Thank you to the incredible curatorial team of Diane Borsato, FranciscoFernando Granados, Cole Swanson, Trixie & Beaver, Keith Cole, and Paul Dotey – the collection you have curated is outstanding. To each and every artist, thank you. Your generosity is overwhelming and your talent is immeasurable. I am honored that Steven Beckly brought his talent and magic to this year’s artist multiple. “There’s a land that I heard of” is a gorgeous work that embodies the spirit of Buddies. Thank you Steven. To Mark Aikman and the rest of the ArtAttack! steering committee who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes – you are an incredible source of inspiration and I am so thankful for all of you. Finally, thank you to all of you who are here tonight. Your support means so much to Buddies and the community as a whole. Now let’s kick this party off and remember to raise those paddles in the air, bid high and bid often!

KEITH COLE

COLE SWANSON

Now that pot is legal…The Rock Hudson Memorial Tuck Shop is slowly and wonderfully moving into its formative years. The tuck shop has found itself and is in a really sweet groove. Each year the tuck shop gets busier, more popular, and more daring. 2018’s tuck shop is looking great thanks to fellow curator Paul Dotey and his keen eye. The queer future is bright. The queer kids are alright.

How can human beings, each expressing unique combinations of physical, psychological, and cultural worlds, have truly shared experiences in spite of their differences? Embedded in our flesh are systems, codes that connect us. Empathy is engaged through the creation and consumption of an artwork. In this collection, I have assembled pieces that elicit powerful moments of esthetic empathy; each communicates the artist’s process and performance as embodied knowledge. The works are rife with sensory information, generated both from their methods of creation and from the iconography within. We experience the artist’s labour in our flesh. We feel the tension of a brush and pen in hand. We detect the scent of flowers, the stroke of feathers and fronds across our fingertips, and the imminent threat of a razor sharp line. Through empathy and embodiment, this collection attempts to bridge the palpable gaps between each of us in the form of a fleshly union, a playground for the senses that appeals to our most ancient selves.

My thanks go to my fellow ArtAttack! committee members, the staff, volunteers, and board at Buddies, and all the many ArtAttack! guests. G. Kyle Shields joins us this year as the Tuck Shop’s visual merchandiser and Shellie Zhang designs the exclusive tuck shop bag for 2018. My biggest thanks goes to the artists who have generously donated work – thank you. We would be nothing without you.

PAUL DOTEY Each year, each ArtAttack and each work of art is a reason for celebration, and this year I’m so proud to be here for Buddies’ 40th anniversary.

TRIXIE & BEEVER

Queer people look out for each other and geography is no barrier. We watch what happens in the world and we reach out in any way we can to make sure our lives get better. We march, we speak out, we make art and we make sure we know what’s going on. This year, as always, I’m happy to bring artists from Europe, the UK and the States to the Tuck Shop as well as our local friends. We strengthen ties with our friends when we make art, and each November Buddies celebrates everything that’s strong in our community.

After many years of being involved with Buddies and the ArtAttack auction as volunteers, donors, buyers, and attendees, we were thrilled to be asked to join the curatorial team for 2018. Our approach was quite simple: we asked some of the most talented artists we know to consider donating to this vital and vibrant theatrical and community institution. We are especially happy to have secured wonderful pieces from artists whose work may be unfamiliar to ArtAttack patrons, and hope that the introductions foster new relationships. Our sincere gratitude to the artists for their generosity!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who puts in their time and love.

FRANCISCO-FERNANDO GRANADOS There is no queerness without bodily agency. The selection of work put forward here as a proposition for collectors draws out four directions in queered aesthetics that offer possibilities for becoming beyond the boundaries of what is already known. Each artist, in their own way, transforms predetermined ideas of what it means to be in a body, and what it is that bodies can do. The bodies imagined in these works are extended, absented, abstracted, and allied. In becoming, queer bodies renegotiate the boundaries between the individual and the collective, between the human and all other material and immaterial forms. 9

BMO Financial Group is proud to return for the eighth year as the presenting sponsor for ArtAttack. The funding and promotion of the arts in Canada is an important priority for BMO, and we are especially pleased to be able to bring the visual arts together with the theatre arts for this evening in support of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Respect for the individual and differing viewpoints, inclusion, and diversity are the fundamental values that shape the productions that Buddies in Bad Times stages. They are also values shared by BMO – values that shape our success. We at BMO look forward to building on the strength of our ongoing partnership with Buddies in Bad Times so that we can continue to amplify the voices and experiences of often marginalized people in our community. 10

Rafael Ochoa Two Birds

Tyler Durbano Graham 1

2015 C-print 16’’ x 20’’ artist proof

Rafael Ochoa’s art brings a postmodern sensibility to the still life, one of the most enduring of painting genres. His earlier digital works, based on elements derived from Old Master paintings, were created using a unique rendering process he developed over several years. During the past year, Ochoa has taught himself to paint using a conventional brush, palette and canvas, continuing to re-mix elements from images of Classical paintings sourced online. Ochoa has been an instructor at OCADU and York University. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in public and commercial galleries throughout Toronto.

2018 Photograph 20’’ x 15’’

rafaelbenjaminochoa.com

Durbano’s practice employs hair and silicone as primary materials, using juxtaposition, and assemblage as tools to produce sculptural works that evoke a bodily feeling. Many of the sculptures are created by inserting single strands of hair, one at a time, into corresponding silicone forms, to begin a conversation about labour and queer identity. Referencing modes of drag, and their associated props, the work explores ideas of vulnerability, maintenance of the body, and performance. With this new work, Durbano creates a conceptual entry point through which the relationship people have to their identities, their bodies, and to one another can be explored.

2018 Gouache on paper 48’’ x 48’’

2015 Collage 6’’ x 6’’

Jackson Klie works with image-based media to investigate the material and ontological anxieties of contemporary photography. By expanding on ideas surrounding the contingency and performativity of images, his multidisciplinary practice highlights the slippery nature of identity. He is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Guelph.

Rajni Perera’s approach to the deconstruction of the non-European, female body image, delves into the miniaturist aesthetic, manifesting itself in the form of re-appropriated religious icons. By painting these object-beings, Perera engages in discussion with the viewing audience about the aesthetic treatment of gender and the non-European sacred and secular body in a popular culture context. She is creating a subversive aesthetic that counteracts antiquated, oppressive discourse, and acts as a restorative force through which people can move outdated, repressive modes of being towards reclaiming their power.

How it works

REGISTER Be sure to register and pick up your BMO Bidding Paddle in the Cabaret as soon as you arrive. With your paddle, you can bid on any lot in our live and silent auctions. Spend less time in the checkout line by authorizing the purchase of your items to either your Visa or MasterCard when you register and items successfully bid on can be immediately purchased. All you have to do is pick them up at the end of the evening! SILENT AUCTION You can bid on items in the silent auction as often as you like using the same bidder number you use for the live auction. Bidding will close shortly after Lot 22 in the live auction. The highest bid received by our staff at the time of closing wins – winning bids will be posted on the boards within 10 minutes of the silent auction closing. 38

THE ROCK HUDSON MEMORIAL TUCK SHOP All items are available for purchase at set prices, which are listed in the catalogue and on display. Items can be purchased ‘cash-and-carry’ or put on account using the same bidder number you use for the live and silent auctions.

TAX RECEIPTS If the final purchase price of an item in the live auction is equal to or greater than 120 % of the posted estimated value, the purchaser will be issued a charitable tax receipt for the difference between the estimate and the selling price.

PAYMENT You can pick up and pay for your items any time throughout the evening. Buddies accepts Visa, MasterCard, debit, and cash.

CONDITIONS OF SALE Each lot contains an estimated value obtained from sources the ArtAttack steering committee believes to be reliable, but no representation or warranty as to the actual resale value is made or implied. Estimate values include value of framing, where applicable. All sales are final. No purchase can be returned, refunded, or exchanged. All items are sold as is, as exhibited. Buddies reserves the right to share the contact information of successful bidders with the artists whose work they have purchased.

PAYING BY INSTALMENT Any purchase total of $1,000 or more can be paid for by instalment if you so choose. Speak to a staff member at the registration desk for more information or to set up an instalment plan before you start bidding.
