Space Odyssey 2.0 nl De ruimte is een eindeloze bron van fascinatie en inspiratie voor kunstenaars, schrijvers en filmmakers. De droom om op te kunnen stijgen van de aarde of het verlangen om nieuwe werelden te ontdekken, laat de mens in volste vrijheid fantaseren over alternatieve werkelijkheden en toekomstscenario’s.

Door de toenemende internationalisering, privatisering en democratisering is de ruimtevaart een nieuwe richting ingeslagen en heeft daardoor een nieuwe vlucht genomen.

Dat uit zich in een hernieuwd enthousiasme bij kunstenaars.

De steeds meer beschikbare kennis en technologieën worden zich toegeëigend door de kunstenaars. Ze voeren hun eigen wetenschappelijke experimenten uit, bouwen aan open source satellieten of proberen zelfgemaakte raketten te lanceren.

Tegelijk merken we een stijgende interesse vanuit de wetenschap om met kunstenaars samen te werken.

En hoewel hun posities variëren van naïeve dromer, pseudowetenschapper, bricoleur tot volwaardig lid van een onderzoeksteam; de kunstenaars bieden stuk voor stuk nieuwe perspectieven.

Met open vragen, kritische bedenkingen, speculatieve voorstellen of alternatieve acties gaan ze voorbij aan het zuiver wetenschappelijke, economische of militaire denken over de ruimte.

Space Odyssey 2.0 toont nieuwe verhalen en interdisciplinaire creatieve DIY praktijken waarin wetenschap en droom in elkaar overvloeien. Met deze tentoonstelling verkent Z33 opnieuw een actueel maatschappelijk thema op het kruispunt tussen hedendaagse kunst en wetenschap.

De nieuwe space race Z33 presenteert Space Odyssey 2.0 tegen een achtergrond van een aantal belangrijke evoluties in de ruimtevaart die aanleiding geven tot een nieuwe space race.

De laatste decennia is de ruimtevaart steeds meer internationaal georganiseerd. Vandaag zijn het immers niet langer enkel de VS en Rusland die de ruimtewedloop domineren, ook

Space Odyssey 2.0 en Outer space continues to be an endless source of fascination and inspiration for artists, writers and filmmakers. The dream to be able to leave the earth or the desire to explore new worlds gives man the freedom to fantasize about alternate realities and future scenarios.

Increasing internationalization, privatization and democratization has created new possibilities for space travel, pushing it toward new directions. Consequently, space travel has taken off again, as evidenced by artists’ renewed enthusiasm. Growing amounts of available knowledge and new technologies are appropriated into the artist’s practice.

They perform their own scientific experiments, build open source satellites or try to launch their homemade rockets. At the same time, there is a growing interest from the scientific community to set up collaborations with artists.

The artist’s positions in these scenarios vary from naive dreamer, pseudo-scientist, and tinkerer to full member of a research team, but they all offer new perspectives. With their open questions, critical reflections, speculative proposals or alternative actions they go beyond purely scientific, economic or military approaches to space exploration.

Space Odyssey 2.0 presents new stories and creative interdisciplinary DIY practices on the intersection of science and imagination. With the exhibition, Z33 explores a relevant social topic on the intersection between contemporary art and science.

The new space race Z33 presents Space Odyssey 2.0 against a background of a number of important developments in space travel that have given rise to a new space race.

In recent decades, space travel has come to be organized on an increasingly international level. Today, the space race is no longer dominated by the U.S. and Russia alone; countries

landen als China, India, Japan, Israël of Argentinië hebben een eigen ruimtevaartprogramma. En met het ISS, het internationaal ruimtestation is internationale samenwerking een feit. Daarbovenop bepalen satellieten de wereldwijde communicatienetwerken van vandaag. De strijd voor onafhankelijke communicatienetwerken speelt zich dan ook voor een stuk in de ruimte af, waar zich nieuwe geopolitieke verhoudingen laten aflezen.

Een nog belangrijkere evolutie echter, is de toenemende privatisering van de ruimtevaartindustrie. Heel wat kapitaalkrachtige, dynamische bedrijven storten zich op de ontwikkeling van nieuwe technologieën en het is dan ook niet langer de overheid, maar de privésector die het tempo aangeeft.

En dat tempo ligt hoog. Alleen al in 2012 werden enkele fundamentele mijlpalen in de ruimtevaart gezet. Zo werd het eerste privé vrachtvervoer naar het ISS opgezet en werd Stratolaunch ontwikkeld, het grootste en krachtigste vliegtuig ooit, bedoeld voor lanceringen van ruimtetuigen. Het eerste commerciële ruimtestation wordt voorzien voor 2015. Ook ruimtetoerisme is tegenwoordig big business en groeit uit tot een nieuwe vorm van luxevertier. Zowel Virgin Galactic als Xcor bieden suborbitale vluchten aan, maar er worden ook plannen gemaakt voor maanvluchten, ontwikkeling van maanbasissen, ruimtehotels, marsreizen en zelfs reizen naar andere sterrenstelsels. De economische drijfveren achter de huidige space race zijn telecommunicatie, ruimtetransport, ruimtetoerisme en de ontginning van materialen.

DIY en space 2.0 Dat de ruimtevaart een nieuwe vlucht neemt, zorgt ook voor een hernieuwde interesse op kleinere schaal. Doordat technologie en kennis in het huidige globale informatienetwerk veel meer beschikbaar zijn, gaan ook amateurs, studenten en kunstenaars daarmee aan de slag. Dat resulteert in creatieve DIY projecten.

Zo is er bijvoorbeeld de open source satelliet TubeSat, een zelfbouwkit waarmee je een kleine satelliet kan bouwen. Onder andere het OSSI (Open Source Satellite Initiative) van kunstenaar Hojun Song wil zijn satelliet in 2013 lanceren met behulp

like China, India, Japan, Israel and Argentina have set up their own space programmes as well. And the ISS, the International Space Station, has turned international cooperation into a fact.

In addition, these days, global communication networks are entirely dependent on satellites. The struggle for independent communication networks is partly fought out in space, where new geopolitical relations are being shaped.

An even more important development, however, is the increasing privatization of the space industry. Many financially strong and dynamic companies are getting involved in the development of new technologies; hence, the developmental pace is no longer set by the government, but rather by the private sector.

And the pace is fast. Just in 2012 alone, there were a number of fundamental breakthroughs in aerospace development.

Take, for instance, the first private cargo transport to the ISS, and the development of Stratolaunch, the largest and most powerful aircraft for launching spacecraft ever designed.

The first commercial space station is planned for 2015.

Even space tourism has become big business and is steadily growing into a new form of luxury entertainment. Both Virgin Galactic and XCOR offer sub-orbital flights, but there are also plans for moon flights, the development of lunar bases, space hotels, flights to Mars and even journeys to other galaxies.

The economic drives behind the current space race are telecommunications, space transportation, space tourism and the mining of raw materials.

DIY and space 2.0 These developments also prove to be an impetus for a renewed interest in space travel on a smaller scale. As technology and knowledge become increasingly more available in today’s global information network, amateurs, students and artists get involved in the space race through a variety of creative DIY projects.

Take, for example, the open source satellite TubeSat, a DIY-kit with which one can build a small satellite. Then there is the OSSI (Open Source Satellite Initiative) project set up by artist Hojun Song, that aims to launch its own satellite in 2013 with funds

van crowdfunding. Het collectief Suborbitals uit Kopenhagen is dan weer goed op weg om het eerste succesvolle DIY bemande ruimtetuig te ontwikkelen voor suborbitale vluchten.

Daarnaast doen er allerlei eenvoudigere en low-cost experimenten de ronde op het internet, zoals het filmen van de uiterste limieten van de aardse atmosfeer met een ballon waar een camera op gemonteerd is (bv. Simon Faithfull – Escape Vehicle No. 6 of Stratohab).

Het is duidelijk dat mensen de ruimte steeds meer in eigen handen nemen en zelf actief de toekomst willen vormgeven.

Een toekomst waarin open collaboratie, uitwisseling van informatie en low-cost en DIY initiatieven een alternatieve denkwijze voorstellen.

Oude dromen, nieuwe verhalen Ondanks hun verschillende belangen in de ruimte, delen privébedrijven, wetenschappers en amateur-hobbyisten één grote gemeenschappelijke interesse: de ruimte als ultieme fantasie en droom. Ook voor kunstenaars, auteurs en filmmakers is die fantasie altijd een inspiratiebron geweest, denk maar aan al de science fiction geïnspireerde kunst, literatuur en films.

De nieuwe space race zorgt nu dan ook voor een enthousiaste generatie kunstenaars die nieuwe verhalen creëert – het onderwerp van Space Odyssey 2.0.

Door middel van fictie onderzoeken de nieuwe verhalen de filosofische en culturele implicaties van ruimtewetenschap en ruimtevaart. Vertelling, re-enactment en performance ontmoeten zo wetenschappelijke theorie en experiment. Verschillende vormen van uitwisseling en samenwerking tekenen zich af: van kunstenaars die de ruimtevaartwetenschap gebruiken om verder te speculeren (Michael Burton), tot kunstenaars die pseudowetenschappelijke experimenten opzetten (Panamarenko, Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Andy Gracie). Anderen gaan dan weer wetenschappelijke fenomenen omvormen tot een artistieke creatie of performance (Frederik De Wilde, Edith Dekyndt, Semiconductor) of slagen erin de wetenschapper zelf tot een performer te maken (Nelly Ben Hayoun). Interdisciplinaire

gathered through crowd funding. The collective Suborbitals from Copenhagen is well on its way to develop the first successful DIY manned spacecraft for sub-orbital flights. And finally, there are a host of simple and low-cost experiments on the Internet, such as the filming of the extreme limits of Earth’s atmosphere with a camera-mounted balloon (e.g. Simon Faithfull – Escape Vehicle No. 6 or Stratohab), among many others.

It is clear that people are increasingly and literally taking space into their own hands and seek to actively shape the future.

A future in which open collaboration, exchange of information and low-cost and DIY initiatives can stimulate an alternative way of thinking.

Old dreams, new stories Despite their different interests in space travel, private companies, scientists and amateur hobbyists have one main thing in common: space as the ultimate fantasy and dream. But also artists, authors and filmmakers have found inspiration in that fantasy; think of all the science fiction-inspired art, literature and films.

The new space race has become a great source of inspiration for an enthusiastic generation of artists who bring us new stories – and this is precisely the subject of Space Odyssey 2.0.

Fiction is the perfect vehicle by which these new stories explore the philosophical and cultural implications of space science and space travel. Narration, re-enactment and performance intersect with scientific theory and experimentation. A variety of forms of exchange and cooperation are becoming apparent, ranging from artists who use space science to introduce new possible scenarios (Michael Burton), to artists who undertake pseudo-scientific experiments (Panamarenko, Agnes MeyerBrandis, Andy Gracie). Others set out to transform scientific phenomena into an artistic creation or performance (Frederik De Wilde, Edith Dekyndt, Semiconductor) or manage to turn the scientist into a performer (Nelly Ben Hayoun). Interdisciplinary collaboration, co-creation, experimental practice and imagination are the key elements in these new creative fantasies.

Science meets fiction

Er ontstaan dus nieuwe kruisbestuivingen tussen kunst, wetenschap en technologie, in alle richtingen. Zo is er ook vanuit ruimtevaartonderzoek steeds meer openheid om met kunstenaars en designers samen te werken. Ze worden bijvoorbeeld gevraagd om na te denken over de inrichting van ruimteschepen of om oplossingen te bedenken voor sensoriële deprivatie tijdens lange ruimtereizen. En kunst kan wetenschap evengoed beïnvloeden. Zo is NASA geïnteresseerd in de knowhow die kunstenaar Frederik De Wilde ontwikkelde in zijn artistiek onderzoek naar het zogenaamde nanozwart. Het donkerste materiaal dat er bestaat en dat bijna alle licht absorbeert kan mogelijk verder ontwikkeld worden om de ruimtetelescopen van NASA te verbeteren. Angelo Vermeulen (kunstenaar en doctor in de biologie) is dan weer dankzij zijn gemengde achtergrond opgenomen in een onderzoeksteam van ESA. Terwijl zijn DIY ruimteschip en co-creatie project Seeker in Z33 staat, zal hij deelnemen aan een marssimulatie waar onderzoek wordt gedaan naar een andere manier van omgaan met voedsel in de ruimte.

Space Odyssey 2.0 plaatst de huidige space race in een breder perspectief. Vanzelfsprekend hanteert de kunst andere spelregels dan de wetenschap of technologie, maar een kunstblik op ruimtevaart laat ons toe om ruimer te kijken naar sociale, culturele en filosofische implicaties. De nieuwe creatieve praktijken die in Space Odyssey 2.0 worden gepresenteerd stemmen niet alleen tot nadenken over de toekomst van het menselijk ras of van onze planeet, maar tonen in hun experimenteer- en doedrang ook een weg om zelf een toekomst te maken.

Science meets fiction New crossovers between art, science and technology are taking place, in all possible directions. Similarly, increasing openness in the field of space research makes collaborations with artists and designers possible. They are, for example, invited to think about the interior design of spacecrafts or find solutions to sensory deprivation during long space voyages. Yet art can equally influence science. NASA, for instance, is interested in the knowhow artist Frederik De Wilde developed through his artistic research on the so-called nano-black. The darkest material known to man absorbs almost all light and could be further developed to improve the NASA space telescopes. Angelo Vermeulen (artist and PhD in biology), in turn, has been included in an ESA research team because of his mixed background. During the time his DIY spaceship and co-creation project Seeker will be exhibited in Z33, he will participate in a Mars simulation mission that intends to research the issue of food in space.

Space Odyssey 2.0 puts the current space race in a broader perspective. Obviously art plays a different game than science or technology, but the artist’s view on space travel invites us to look at the broader social, cultural and philosophical implications.

The new creative practices presented in Space Odyssey 2.0 not only encourage us to think about the future of the human race or the planet, but show us, through their passion for experimentation and creation, a way to fashion our own future.

McCutcheon was vier jaar oud in 1969, het jaar waarin Neil Armstrong en Buzz Aldrin voor het eerst voet op de maan zetten. Een generatie later ontwikkelde zijn vierjarig zoontje Angus een fascinatie voor alles wat met ruimtevaart te maken heeft. Deze gedeelde jongensdroom inspireerde McCutcheon en hij sloeg samen met zijn zoontje aan het tekenen. Ze ontwierpen raketten, ruimtepakken en andere typische space age iconen en ensceneerden zelfs een heuse ‘simulatietraining’ op aarde.

McCutcheon combineert fantasie en spelgehalte met zijn eigen fascinatie voor customized cars en de manier waarop hij atypische materialen uit de auto-industrie verwerkt in zijn kunstpraktijk. Alle werken komen uit de grotere Space-tentoonstelling die McCutcheon ontwikkelde voor het Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2012, Out of This World.

en Brian McCutcheon was four years old in 1969, the year when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the moon.

One generation later, his four year old son Angus developed a fascination for everything that has to do with space travel.

This shared boyhood dream inspired McCutcheon, and he set out to make drawings together with his son. They designed rockets, space suits and other typical space age icons and even staged a real ‘simulation training’ on earth.

McCutcheon combines fantasy with his own fascination for customized cars and the way in which he integrates atypical materials from the automotive industry into his art practice.

All the exhibited works are taken from the large Space exhibition Out of This World, which McCutcheon developed for the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2012.

Signer is al ruim dertig jaar lang een krachtig en invloedrijk figuur in de hedendaagse kunstwereld. Hij vormt samen met Panamarenko een duo dat we kunnen beschouwen als ‘voorlopers’ van de jongere kunstenaars in Space Odyssey 2.0. Vanuit een low budget en doe-hetzelf methode voert Signer allerlei experimenten uit, van explosies en botsingen tot lanceringen, steeds met dagdagelijkse objecten. Met de nodige zin voor humor streeft hij een vorm van gecontroleerde chaos na die in de wereld van de wetenschap en techniek uit den boze is.

“On the floor of the garage, I laid out a large map of the moon that was over four meters in diameter. The model helicopter with a small camera pointing downwards flew over the map. The transmitter on the helicopter transmitted these pictures to another room where we could watch the projected on video.

The interesting thing was that this flat map of the moon turned into a spherical body in the projected picture. You really had the impression that you were close to the moon, looking at it in the darkness of outer space.”

Roman Signer: Works, Volume 3

en Roman Signer has been a powerful and influential figure in the contemporary art world for over thirty years. Together with Panamarenko, he can be considered as one of the ‘precursors’ of the younger artists in Space Odyssey 2.0. Signer has a low budget and do-it-yourself approach which he applies to a variety of experiments, ranging from explosions to collisions and launches, always with everyday objects. With the necessary sense of humour, he sets out to create a form of controlled chaos that is entirely foreign to the world of science and technology.

Panamarenko verenigt de figuur van de wetenschapper met die van de naïeve dromer en bricoleur. Naast zeppelins en allerlei soorten vliegmachines ontwierp hij ook een reeks ruimtetuigen waarvan Space Odyssey 2.0 een selectie toont aan de hand van schetsen en modellen.

Vanaf het eind van de jaren 70 legde Panamarenko zich toe op het idee van het magnetisch ruimteschip. Dat zou geen energie nodig hebben, maar kan met behulp van bestaande magnetische krachten vliegen. De Zilverschijf is het resultaat van een van zijn eerste ontwerpen. Een ander model is het langwerpige interstellaire ruimteschip de Vliegende Sigaar, een soort moederschip dat in werkelijkheid zo’n 800 meter lang moest worden.

De Bing of the Ferro Lusto, is een later prototype van een ruimteschip. Voor de aandrijving en navigatie van het toestel ontwikkelt Panamarenko zijn theorie rond kosmische energie en magnetische velden verder onder de noemer Toymodel of Space. Eens opgestart gebruiken de motoren de snelheid van de rotatie van de aarde om een soort boemerang effect te creëren.

en Panamarenko brings together the figure of the scientist and that of the naive dreamer and tinkerer. Aside from all kinds of airships and flying machines, he has designed a series of spacecrafts of which a selection is shown in Space Odyssey 2.0 in the form of sketches and models.

From the end of the 70s, Panamarenko has mainly focussed on the concept of the magnetic spaceship. This spacecraft would not require any internal energy source, but would fly by means of existing magnetic forces. The Zilverschijf (Silver Disk) is one of his first designs. Another model is the elongated interstellar spaceship Vliegende Sigaar (Flying Cigar), a kind of mother ship that would measure over 800 meters long in reality.

The Bing of the Ferro Lusto is a later prototype for a spaceship.

The propulsion and navigation of the device was worked out in Panamarenko’s theory of cosmic energy and magnetic fields under the title Toymodel of Space. Once launched, the engines use the speed of rotation of the earth to create a kind of boomerang effect.

In een merkwaardige vermenging van wetenschap en fictie, experiment en verhaal, heden en verleden, ontwikkelt Agnes Meyer-Brandis een werk dat geïnspireerd is op The Man in the Moone. In dat boek uit 1638 vliegt de protagonist naar de maan met een vlucht maanganzen.

Agnes Meyer-Brandis probeert dit verhaal in werkelijkheid om te zetten door elf ganzen op te voeden en hen te trainen tot volwaardige astronauten. Ze gebruikt hiervoor een techniek gekend als ‘imprinting’, gebruikt om dieren via conditionering van kleins af aan bepaalde gedragingen te leren. Het is een proces van maanden waarbij de ganzen leren hoe ze in formatie moeten vliegen, zerogravity training en ruimtepakgewenning krijgen. Ze leren over de ruimte en de maan en gaan met de kunstenares mee op expedities.

Momenteel leven de ganzen in een kraterveld in Pollinarië, Italië op een simulatiehabitat. Space Odyssey 2.0 toont in een controlekamer live beelden van die habitat, waar de ganzen – net zoals in menselijke simulatieomgevingen – testen en onderzoek doen om zich voor te bereiden op het leven op de maan. Het schaalmodel van de habitat, de artefacten en de Moon Goose Movie vertellen verder het verhaal van de maanganzen en hun opleiding tot astronauten.

en In a curious mix of science and fiction, experiment and narrative, past and present, Agnes Meyer-Brandis creates a work inspired by The Man in the Moone. In the book of 1638, the protagonist flies to the moon with a flight of moon geese.

Agnes Meyer-Brandis tries to turn this story into reality by raising eleven geese and training them as fully fledged astronauts.

To do so, she uses a technique known as ‘imprinting’, used to teach animals certain behaviours through conditioning from an early age. It is a process that takes months; the geese are taught how to fly in formation, are given zero gravity training and space suit habituation. They learn about space and the moon and accompany the artist on expeditions.

The geese are currently living in a simulation habitat in a crater field in Pollinaria, Italy. In Space Odyssey 2.0, live images of

the habitat are shown in a control room. The geese can be seen doing tests and conducting research – just like in human simulation environments – to prepare for life on the moon. The scale model of the habitat, the artefacts and the Moon Goose Movie further illustrate the story of the moon geese and their training to become astronauts.

In de zomer van 2012 stelde Nelly Ben Hayoun een orkest samen met ruimtewetenschappers verbonden aan NASA Ames Research Center, Singularity University, International Space University en SETI. De leden van dit International Space Orchestra brengen een eenmalige performance “Ground Control: An Opera in Space” voor de allergrootste windtunnel ter wereld op de sites van NASA Ames Research Center.

Het project refereert aan de science fiction literatuur, de space opera en de klassieke opera als Gesamtkunstwerk.

Maar het script bevat ook concrete verwijzingen naar NASA’s missies en probeert deze naar een meer menselijke en persoonlijke schaal te vertalen. Het scenario van de opera werd gebaseerd op wat zich voordeed in de controlekamer tijdens de Apollo 11 missie en werd mee uitgeschreven door NASA flight director Rusty Hunt. Het project probeert NASA Ames en de mensen die er werken enerzijds een menselijker gezicht te geven. Anderzijds is het een onderzoek dat op een creatieve en alternatieve manier blootlegt hoe een dergelijke organisatie functioneert.

De making of film geeft het verhaal weer van hoe het project tot stand kwam, van het samenstellen van het orkest, de repetities, tot de opnames op Skywalker, George Lucas’ ranch, waar Star Wars werd opgenomen, tot de eigenlijke performance. Het geeft een behind-the-scenes beeld van hoe dit surreële en hybride experiment tot stand kwam. Nelly Ben Hayoun nodigde enkele wetenschappers uit om een impressie te geven van hoe volgens hen het geluid van Neil Armstrong’s eerste stappen op de maan zou geweest zijn. Theoretisch gesproken weliswaar, aangezien op de maan geen atmosfeer en dus geen geluid is.

Op basis van deze interviews en feiten regisseerde Nelly Ben Hayoun foley artist (movie sound artist) Sue Harding om een soundtrack te verbeelden bij beeldmateriaal van de maanlanding en de lancering van de Saturn V raket.

Moon Dust Remix ondervraagt ons begrip van feit en fictie alsook de authenticiteit van beelden. Door de ontwikkeling van een soundtrack voor de maan start het project ook een discussie over hoe onze menselijke ervaring op de maan zou kunnen zijn.

The International Space Orchestra, 2012 en In the summer of 2012, Nelly Ben Hayoun created, assembled and directed the world first orchestra of space scientists from NASA Ames Research Center, Singularity University, International Space University and the SETI (Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence) Institute. The members of this International Space Orchestra perform a unique drama of non-terrestrial communication and the techno-wonders of mission control rooms as part of the programme “Ground Control: An Opera in Space”.

The project refers to science fiction literature, the space opera and classical opera as Gesamtkunstwerk. But the script also contains specific references to NASA’s missions and tries to bring them down to a more human and personal scale. The scenario of the opera is based on the ‘events scores’, dramas that occurred in the control room during the Apollo 11 mission and was co-written with NASA flight director Rusty Hunt.

It features original music by Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Café, but also music written by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) with singer Bobby Womack and producer Richard Russell; and Japanese superstar and Otamatone inventor, Maywa Denki.

With lyrics by science fiction author Bruce Sterling and writer Jasmina Tesanovic. Musical Director is two time Grammy Award Evan Price.

The making of film captures all the behind-the-scenes action during the creation of the International Space Orchestra: from the recruiting sessions to the recording at Skywalker, George Lucas’ ranch where Star Wars was recorded, or the final performance in front of the World Largest Windtunnel in NASA Ames Research Center. It gives the opportunity to experience the surrealism of this production merging science, technology, design and opera. Through the various interviews with the ISO players it also investigates the functioning and working dynamics of an organization of this kind.

Moon Dust Remix, 2012 Nelly Ben Hayoun invited several scientists to ‘perform’ what they think Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon would have sounded like. Theoretically speaking of course, since the moon has no atmosphere and therefore sound cannot travel.

On the basis of these interviews and facts, in the two other videos, Nelly Ben Hayoun directed foley artist (movie sound artist) Sue Harding to perform a soundtrack on the footage of the moon landing and the launch of Saturn V. Moon Dust Remix questions our understanding of facts and fiction as well as the authenticity of images. As a Moon chorus, it is also claiming what sound should be for the moon by generating a forum for discussion on what could be our future human experience on the moon.

Edith Dekyndt zoekt de grenzen op van onze fysieke werkelijkheid. Ze is gefascineerd door efemere en ongrijpbare fenomenen. Major Tom is een ballon gevuld met helium en lucht die zich vrij beweegt door de ruimte. De bewegingen van de ballon worden bepaald door toevallige omgevingsfactoren zoals luchtcirculatie, temperatuur of bewegingen van bezoekers. Het object wordt ondanks zijn afmetingen vluchtig en onstabiel en ontsnapt letterlijk aan de controle van de grond.

In de ruimte hoor je geluiden uit de Voyager Golden Record. Deze audio-opnames werden in 1977 meegestuurd met de Voyager II missie in geval van een eventuele ontmoeting met aliens. Naast geluiden van aardse elementen zoals wind of vuur bevat de plaat ook dierlijke en menselijke geluiden. De technologie en de geluiden lijken nu al – enkele tientallen aardse jaren later – enorm gedateerd, laat staan dat we denken in kosmische tijd.

Major Tom is a balloon filled with helium and air that moves freely through space. The movements of the balloon are determined by random environmental factors such as air circulation, temperature and the movement of visitors. Despite its dimensions, the object is floating and unstable and manages to literally escape the control of gravity.

In the room, sounds from the Voyager Golden Record can be heard. These audio recordings were sent along with the 1977 Voyager II mission in case of a possible encounter with aliens. Aside from sounds of earthly elements like wind or fire, the record also contains animal and human sounds. Today – just a few dozen earth years later – the technology and sounds seem extremely dated, and one can only imagine what this means in cosmic terms.

He applies the rigorous methodology of scientific research, yet freely undermines it with artistic metaphor, humour and ambiguity.

Het toont een fractie van het ontelbare aantal ruwe satellietbeelden dat dagelijks geproduceerd wordt en waarvan het merendeel rechtstreeks in archieven verdwijnt. In tegenstelling tot de ruwe beelden in Black Rain, wordt het beeldmateriaal dat gedeeld wordt met het grote publiek meestal sterk bijgewerkt.

en Semiconductor is fascinated with scientific phenomena and the way our technology can be visualized. The footage in Black Rain is taken from the twin satellite STEREO, which records images of solar winds, solar flares and other phenomena that occur in the space between the sun and the earth. It shows a fraction of the countless number of raw satellite images that are produced every day, most of which is filed almost immediately.

Unlike the raw images in Black Rain, the footage that is presented to the general public goes through heavy postproduction.

is een realtime visualisatie van het kwantum vacuüm, de lege tijd-ruimte die zich uitstrekt in de interstellaire ruimte. De klassieke fysica ging er steeds van uit dat het vacuüm gelijk is aan het absolute niets. Volgens de kwantumveldentheorie echter, heeft ook het vacuüm energie, omdat theoretisch gezien niets energie 0 kan hebben.

De ruimte is dan ook allesbehalve niets maar juist een veelheid aan deeltjes en antideeltjes die even snel opflakkeren als weer verdwijnen. Meer nog, het vacuüm blijkt eigenschappen te hebben die nog vreemder zijn dan die van materie, denk maar aan de zogenaamde zwarte gaten of ‘dark energy’. SoN01R is een poging tot visualisatie van deze ongrijpbare en immateriële fenomenen die zich op een microschaal afspelen in de oneindige uitgestrektheid van het heelal. De beelden in de tentoonstelling spelen zich bovendien live af. De basis van de visualisatie is een datastroom die live binnenkomt via het Department of Quantum Science van de Australian National University.

en SoN01R is a real-time visualization of the quantum vacuum, the empty space-time that fills the interstellar space. It was always assumed in classical physics that the vacuum is equal to the absolute nothing. According to the quantum field theory, however, the vacuum has energy as well, since nothing, in theory, can have zero energy.

Space, in this way, is anything but nothing and consists of a multitude of particles and anti-particles that flare up and disappear almost instantaneously. The vacuum also appears to have properties that are even stranger than that of matter, think of the so-called black holes or ‘dark energy’. SoN01R is an attempt to visualize these elusive and intangible phenomena that occur on a micro scale in the infinite vastness of the universe.

The images presented in the exhibition occur in real time.

The basis for the visualization is a live stream that is broadcast by the Department of Quantum Science of the Australian National University.

Astronomical Bodies is gebaseerd op onderzoek van Dr. Terence Kee aan de Universiteit van Leeds. Hij kwam met de stelling dat een reactieve vorm van fosfor op de vroege aarde aankwam in de vorm van meteorieten. Dr. Kee ontdekte dat de fosfor uit de ruimte geschikter was voor de chemische reacties waardoor het leven op aarde complexer kon worden.

Astronomical Bodies keert dit proces om en tracht fosfor uit het lichaam – in de vorm van nierstenen en urine – om te vormen naar door de mens gemaakte meteorieten.

Het idee van het bevruchten van de ruimte door de mens of door aliens is iets dat in heel wat science fiction literatuur of films aan bod komt, maar wordt hier eerder als een natuurlijk proces voorgesteld.

Astrobiology in the Bakery, 2010

In Astrobiology in the Bakery wordt het proces van het maken en kopen van ons dagelijks brood getransformeerd tot een ontmoeting met de grote systemen van de ruimte die ons leven vormgeven. Het werk is een model van het Goldilocks Enigma, een proces waarbij de grootte en positie van de aarde in verhouding tot de zon in balans is door hitte, licht, zwaartekracht en schaal. In het werk wordt gist, wat een levend organisme is, onderworpen aan externe krachten die binnen Goldilocks Enigma te vinden zijn.

Enkel op de juiste afstand tot de hittebron rijst het deeg op een optimale manier. Hier situeert zich de bewoonbare zone van het kunstwerk en simuleert het de ideale situatie van onze aarde.

Solar Storm Sensor, 2012-2013 Onderzoek naar zonnestormen heeft uitgewezen dat deze effect hebben op de menselijke biochemie en op menselijk gedrag. Daardoor worden dan ook weer andere systemen zoals de beursgang beïnvloed. Solar Storm Sensor werkt als een soort barometer en brengt een onmetelijk systeem

als de kosmos binnen in onze huiskamer. Op die manier herinnert het kunstwerk ons eraan dat de emoties en gedachten die we nu ervaren mee gevormd worden door grote onzichtbare gebeurtenissen. Tenslotte zijn ook wij galactische producten.

Astronomical Bodies, 2010 en Astronomical Bodies is based on the research of Dr. Terence Kee of the University of Leeds. He proposes that a reactive form of phosphorus arrived on the early Earth via meteorite impacts.

His research found that phosphorus from space was more suitable for the chemical reactions to develop complex life.

Astronomical Bodies reverses this process and tries to transform phosphorus harvested from the body – in the form of kidney stones and urine – into manmade meteorites. Rather than the traditional idea of transpermia addressed in a host of science fiction writings and films, Astronomical Bodies proposes that the galactic transferal of life-promoting chemicals is a natural process that we can facilitate.

Astrobiology in the Bakery, 2010 In Astrobiology in the Bakery, the process of making and buying daily bread is transformed into an encounter with the major astronomical systems that shape our lives. The work represents a model of the Goldilocks Enigma, a process by which the size and position of the earth relative to the sun is kept in balance through heat, light, gravity and scale. In the work, yeast, a living organism, is subjected to the external forces that are generated within the Goldilocks Enigma. The dough is most successful when located at the optimum distance from the heat source.

This is where the habitable zone of the artwork is situated, where it simulates the ideal situation of our earth.

Solar Storm Sensor, 2012-2013 Research into solar storms has shown that they affect human biochemistry and human behaviour. These in turn also affect other systems such as the stock exchange. Solar Sensor acts as a barometer and brings a vast system such as the cosmos into our very own living room. The work, in a way, reminds us of the fact that the emotions and thoughts we experience are also formed by large unseen events. After all, we are galactic products as well.

on Earth – Souvenirs bestaat uit een reeks interviews met kunstenaars van verschillende generaties en van diverse herkomst. De lijst geïnterviewden (o.a. Mark Dion, Adrian Paci, Matt Mullican, Willem Oorebeek...) is het resultaat van toevallige ontmoetingen die voortkwamen uit projecten, residenties en groepstentoonstellingen van Filip Van Dingenen. Op een speelse manier gaat het werk om met een ernstig thema als ‘About Space’. Het vertrekpunt is een fragment uit de Life on Earth documentaires van David Attenborough uit 1979. Hierin spreekt Attenborough over de twee Voyager missies die informatie over het leven op aarde meenamen in de ruimte. Van Dingenen legde telkens dezelfde vraag voor: “Wat zou jij de ruimte insturen om het leven op aarde te representeren?” Alle antwoorden staan op een A4 vel en hebben een originele tekening die een mindmap voorstelt van de plek waar het interview werd afgenomen.

In a playful way, the work deals with a serious theme such as ‘About Space’. The starting point is an excerpt from the 1979 documentary Life on Earth by David Attenborough. In this programme, Attenborough talks about the two Voyager missions that took information about life on Earth into space. Van Dingenen asked the interviewees the same question: “What would you send into space to represent life on earth?” All the answers are printed on a sheet of paper with an original drawing presenting a mindmap of the place where the interview was taken.

nl Als beeldend kunstenaar met een doctoraat in de biologie werkt Angelo Vermeulen steeds op het kruispunt tussen kunst en wetenschap. Voor Space Odyssey 2.0 werkte hij – samen met een interdisciplinair team van kunstenaars, ontwerpers, ingenieurs, studenten en liefhebbers – verder aan zijn DIY ruimteschip Seeker. Het is een ‘community’ project waarin het werk ontstaat door middel van co-creatie. Iedere deelnemer wordt uitgenodigd het werk op actieve manier verder te ontwikkelen, te herdenken of te ‘hacken’.

Seeker is een rondreizend ruimteschip dat Angelo Vermeulen voor het eerst in het najaar van 2012 in Deventer opstartte naar aanleiding van de Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award. Het werk verkent op experimentele wijze de integratie van technologische, ecologische en sociale systemen die nodig zijn voor het langdurig overleven op een ruimteschip. In plaats van functies zoals leven, werken en technologie van elkaar gescheiden te houden, zoekt de Seeker community naar hybride, gesloten systemen, zodat meer duurzaamheid en interconnectie mogelijk worden.

Vanaf april 2013 zal Angelo Vermeulen crew commander zijn van HI-SEAS, een nieuwe marssimulatiemissie opgezet door Cornell en Hawaii University in samenwerking met NASA. Hij zal er in een team van zes mensen gedurende vier maanden in een gesimuleerde marsomgeving verblijven.

In Space Odyssey 2.0, he continues his work – together with an interdisciplinary team of artists, designers, engineers, students and enthusiasts – on his DIY spaceship Seeker. Seeker is a traveling spaceship project which Angelo Vermeulen initiated in the autumn of 2012 in Deventer in the context of the Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award. The work explores in an experimental way the integration of the technological, ecological and social systems that enable long-term survival in a spaceship. Instead of keeping the various functions connected to living, working and technology separated the Seeker community sets out to create hybrid, closed systems that favour sustainability and stimulate interconnection.

From April 2013, Angelo Vermeulen will act as crew commander for HI-SEAS, a new Mars mission simulation mission initiated by Cornell and Hawaii University in collaboration with NASA. In a team of six people, he will live in a simulated Mars environment for a period of four months.

Out of Space 5-19.05.2013 Tentoonstelling met een selectie werken van studenten fotografie en videokunst van MAD-Faculty en E.S.A. Saint Luc Tournai. De werken zijn de resultaten van een workshop rond Space Odyssey 2.0.

Rondleidingen bij Space Odyssey 2.0 Tot 19 mei kan je elke zaterdag en zondag om 15u en 16u een gratis minirondleiding doorheen Space Odyssey 2.0 volgen. Daarin geeft een gids je een korte introductie in de tentoonstelling.

Groepen kunnen een interactieve rondleiding door Space Odyssey 2.0 reserveren via www.z33.be. Een standaard rondleiding duurt 1 uur en kost € 40 (max. 20 deelnemers; € 20 voor scholen). Wie bij de rondleiding een verwerkende workshop wil, betaalt € 20 extra (totale duur: 2 tot 2,5u).

Andere formules mogelijk op aanvraag. Bij reservering van een rondleiding in Space Odyssey 2.0 krijg je korting bij een groepsbezoek aan Cosmodrome in Genk.

Onder de naam Kiss the Curator bezoek je de tentoonstelling in het voetspoor van de curator. Je krijgt het verhaal van de tentoonstelling uit eerste hand, met een drankje achteraf.

Out of Space 5-19.05.2013 An exhibition with a selection of works by students in photography and video art from the MAD-Faculty and Saint Luc Tournai, realised in the context of a workshop set up in the frame of Space Odyssey 2.0.

Space Odyssey 2.0 Guided Tours Up until 19 May, visitors are invited to partake in a free mini tour of Space Odyssey 2.0 every Saturday and Sunday at 3 and 4 p.m.

A guide provides a brief introduction to the exhibition.

Groups can book an interactive tour of Space Odyssey 2.0 through www.z33.be. A standard tour lasts 1 hour and costs € 40 (max. 20 participants; € 20 for schools). There is a post-exhibition workshop for tour participants for € 20 extra (total time: 2 to 2,5 h). Other formats are available upon request. Booking a tour for Space Odyssey 2.0 gives right to a discount for a group visit at Cosmodrome in Genk.

Kiss the Curator lets visitors visit the exhibition in the footsteps of the curator. Get an insider’s view and enjoy the story of the exhibition first-hand, with a drink afterwards.

Educatief aanbod bij Space 0dyssey 2.0 voor kinderen en gezinnen Naast een kijkwijzer voor kinderen van 10 tot 14 jaar biedt Z33 een kinderblik aan voor jonge kinderen (6-9 jaar). Hierin vind je leuke materialen om de tentoonstelling op een speelse en creatieve manier te ontdekken.

Natuurlijk neem je je eigen creatie na afloop mee naar huis. In het Z-lab, de educatieve ruimte, word je zelf aan het werk gezet.

Gezinsnamiddag Space Odyssey 2.0 za 02.03.2013 14 tot 16u Terwijl de volwassenen Space Odyssey 2.0 verkennen met een gids, volgen de kinderen een creatieve workshop over ruimte en ruimtevaart. Aan het einde helpen ouders de kinderen een handje en is er koffie, fruitsap en taart.

Educational programme Space 0dyssey 2.0 for children and families Z33 hosts the interactive programmes kijkwijzer for children from 10 to 14 years and kinderblik for young children (6-9 years). Kids get to use a variety of fun materials to explore the exhibition in a playful and creative manner.

Participants get to take their own creation home afterwards. In the Z-lab, our educational space, children can partake in exciting hands-on activities.

Family Afternoon Space Odyssey 2.0 Sat 02.03.2013 2 - 4 p.m.

While the adults enjoy a guided tour of Space Odyssey 2.0, the children get to take part in a creative workshop on space and aeronautics. At the end of the afternoon, parents get to lend their children a hand and there is coffee, juice and cake. The number of places is limited!
