Hi! My name is Gabriel Vanin I am someone with a keen interest in human experience through architecture and design. My love for architecture grew from travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and practices. This passion is what led me to where I am today, having just completed my Bachelor of Interior Architecture, and soon to begin my journey into a Bachelor of Architectural Studies. Throughout my 4 years of studying Interior architecture, I have developed a great appreciation not only for architecture, but also detailed design that can contribute greatly to how people may experience a space. I truly believe architecture and design is one of the most important fields of work. The idea of creating physical environments that will transcend for future generations to live and grow in is so rewarding and valuable, and I can’t wait to see what my career holds.

Odyssey Odyssey explores past and present Australian film & photography practices that deserve attention, in an attempt to bring a wide range of creative groups, communities and families together. My project aims to convey the idea that film and architecture can coincide to be a catalyst for world building. White Bay Power Station is the perfect site for this as it will help build a community with different user groups who can enjoy one location and also shed light on the wonderful and innovative creative practices in Australia. In Sydney, there are only 3 major film studios, these being Fox Studios, Flame Studio and Lundin Studio. My proposed space will offer all user groups an opportunity to meet industry professionals, learn Australian film practices, and most importantly use the space as they desire.

Design proposal for Oxman This project focused on the development and realization of interior spatial transformations through research-led design practice. The client being nature-centric company ‘Oxman’, are aiming to solve Australia’s deforestation problem. This meant that the design needed to ensure the separation between humans and nature is healed through biophilic and sensory design. The main goal for this project was to achieve a sense of healing, particularly of the mind. Oxman has a wide range of teams and members, therefore flexibility, innovation and collaboration were important design principles I had to achieve. My strategy involved using biophilic design to achieve Oxman’s main mission of ‘healing the division between nature and humanity’. The use of biophilia within the space also improves air quality, cognitive function, creativity and mental health.

Student housing UNSW This project involved redesigning two levels of the UNSW Colombo house student accomodation. Aspects which had to be considered were sun path, noise reduction, inclusivity, achieving a cross-culture community and price ranges. Each floor consists of a range of communal areas, along with varying student room types. These rooms include double rooms, single rooms, and a deluxe option for both.

Retail space Today’s generation is labelled a throwaway society, due to the one use and throw mentality. Large amounts of clothing manufactured gets turned into waste and usually ends up in landfill, leading to an over exploitation of resources. In response to these current issues in the Australian retail sector, this project required the design of a retail space for emerging Australian fashion designers. The goal was to create a narrative of sustainability through materiality, lighting, colour and furnishings. The space is made of sustainable and Australian made materials, creating an intriguing and futuristic space that captures customers and hopefully conveys a strong message.

The design emphasises sustainability through lighting, as each piece of lighting only turns on when a customer interacts with it. For example, the perspectives on the right show wheelchair accessible change rooms. The rail that holds the curtains are led lights which are sensor operated, meaning they will only turn on when a customer closes the curtain and is using the change room. There are also podiums displaying merchandise and clothing. The spotlights above these will only turn on when a customer is nearby through sensors.

Technical drawing set This set of drawings demonstrate the fundamental techniques and components involved in the construction of timber floors, walls, and roofs. The drawings illustrate technically sound structures that follow common techniques used in the development of timber architecture. These technical drawings have been documented through Autodesk AutoCad.

UNSW event circulation diagram This task involved reading David Canter’s article ‘Wayfinding and sign posting: penance or prosthesis?’, then creating wayfinding signage for a particular UNSW event.
Furthermore, the diagram includes other important access points including bus stops, disabled access and parking, surrounding buildings, and lighting.
The map below responds to the way people move through and interact with UNSW’s campus and demonstrates access and egress routes, including for disabled, to and from Anita B. Lawrence Centre. The focus of the diagram is the accessibility from the light rail terminus, through the university mall to the Anita B. Lawrence building, also known as the Red centre.
In conjunction with the map, the task also asks for the design of an event promotion poster (as seen in the previous page). The poster had to ensure correct methods of incorporating the UNSW brand through the use of fonts, sizing, colours and symbols.
