NEW DELHI: Squeals of joy, gasps
of disbelief and sighs of frustrations and finally euphoria, the city had a share of all four during the cracker of a World Cup final match between India and Sri Lanka on Saturday. People came out on the streets within minutes of the win to celebrate the momentous victory. India Gate, Katwaria Sarai , Delhi University hostels and colony parks reverberated
with cries of joy and songs at 10.50pm in the night. “This is amazing. I cannot believe this. We had waited for this for so long and now that it has happened, I am overjoyed,” said Satish Dogra (54) a businessman. The city had gathered in sports clubs, parks and anywhere they could find a screen to watch the match and celebrated in style — and noisily with crackers — once India lifted the trophy after a wait of 28 long years.
Kasbah, a club in GK 1 M Block market was jam packed, with every entry costing between R1,000 and R 1,500. The crowd broke into cheers when the match winning six was hit. The police were also ready for an uproarious response. They barricaded most of the Outer Circle of Connaught Place. After the win, the police stopped all traffic movement at India Gate. Security was stepped in all market places including GK Part-I, Defence Colony and other major markets.

NEW DELHI: Even as the entire city stayed glued to television sets watching the World Cup Final match, some households in South Delhi had to remain in darkness for some time in the evening, thanks to power cut. Around 7pm, houses in Gulmohar Park plunged into darkness, leaving cricket fans shocked and angry. “There was no power for more than 30 minutes. Some houses which had inverted could watch the match,” said PN Gupta of Gulmohar Park Residents’ Welfare Association. “Some of us went to our neighbour’s houses which had inverters. But luckily the power cut was not for long,” said Shivaji Purohit, another local resident. Some of the adjoining areas like Arjun Nagar and Safdarjung Enclave also suffered power cuts for a brief period. “We were scared that there would be a power cut in the evening also,” said Khogendra Singh, a resident of Arjun Nagar. Other South Delhi Areas like Greater Kailash-I, Saidul Ajab, Sunlight Colony, Zamrudpur and Kailash Colony also witnessed short power cut during the day and once in the evening. Sources at Delhi Transco attributed that to minor fault that was restored.
