his Durga Puja, celebrate creativity. From historical themes, different decorative materials to olive oil used in bhog, the city-based puja committees are gearing up for a festival with a novel twist.
Pankha Road Banga Sammiloni
This committee, is using Tant, a traditional Bengali handloom to make the dress of the Goddess, the chandelier and the main tent of pandal. “The theme of the Puja itself is, ‘Maa aschen tant-er sharee te’ (Mother arriving in Tant saree). We want to educate people about the lesser know fabric,” says a member of the Pankha Road Banga Sammiloni, Janakpuri, D Block. The pandal is designed by artists Camellia Suman and Biswajit Das. The puja’s sideshows will showcase models in Tant fabric dresses.

The puja celebrations here will give you a glimpse of Delhi during the famous British architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens’ time. “The special exhibition at the pandal will display pictures and copies of writings of those times,” says Samrat Banerjee, a member. The pandal is inspired by the Rashtrapati Bhawan. For the diet conscious, the bhog at this pandal will be made of olive oil.
Durga Puja Committee, Pitampura
It’s their silver jubilee celebrations this year. “The pandal is based on the theme of an ancient temple and the mandap is designed by artist Manik Paul. There will be a cultural programme, and a special Bhog Prasad will also be prepared,” says
Mihir Chatterjee, committee’s president.
Chittranjan Park Cooperative Ground
The pandal here is an ecofriendly one. “We have used biodegradable materials and VOC-free paint in the idols,” says Rahul Chakravarty of the committee. Even the invites of the puja celebrations are made on mango leaves.
Dakshin Gurgaon Puja Committee
Inspired by the Marwarhi culture and the zamindari system, the pandal here will depict a mix of both. “Besides the theme, the pandal is a green initiative,” says Amitava Das, secretary of the committee. The pandal and the idol are made of mud without chemical dyes.
