here were hordes of placards with hard hitting messages and slogan-shouting at Delhi’s first Slut Walk or Besharmi Morcha. Sunday morning saw hundreds of protesters, of all age groups, marching from Free Church via YWCA and back to Jantar Mantar in central Delhi. Slogans such as “Chhed Chhad par rok lagao” (put an end to eve teasing), were heard. “The march aims to reclaim words like slut and fight against victim blaming,” said Umang Sabharwal, 19, chief organiser of the event. However, unlike its international editions, the Slut Walk in the Capital, did not see many scantilydressed women. “This is a
message for those men who think women dressed in skimpy clothes invite harassment,” said Rohit Sharma, a 34-year-old supporter. “It’s high time that men change their mentality and stop stereotyping,” said Drishti Goyal of Delhi University. Foreigners also came in large groups to support the march. “The fact that women are taking to street and men are supporting, is great,” said Melinda Fleischmann, a tourist from Switzerland. Actor-activist Nafisa Ali, too, raised her voice for women rights at the event. MORE ON PG 6 & THE WEB ■

ilmmaker Mukesh Bhatt’s (above) recent comment is likely to ruffle a few feathers. In an interview to a TV channel, when asked about his views on south Indian actors making a mark in Bollywood, Bhatt pointed a finger on actor Asin Thottumkal (right), 25, saying: “I don’t think Asin has a great future in Bollywood.” About Asin’s hit films, he said: “Films such as Ghajini and Ready became hits because of stars like Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, and not her.” Though Asin remained unavailable for comment, the film fraternity has come to her rescue. “I have worked with Asin in Ready. She’s a good actor and has proved her mettle down south,” says director Anees Bazmee. “I can’t comment on anyone’s future, but the present is definitely hers,” says filmmaker Sajid Khan, who is working with Asin in Housefull 2. Asin will be next seen in Bol Bachchan, alongwith Abhishek Bachchan, and in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2 States, with actor Shah Rukh Khan.
GANDU SCREENING CANCELLED, AGAIN
O
nce again, the screening of the controversial Bengali film, Gandu has been cancelled. Director Q’s explicit film was to be shown yesterday, at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai, as part of the Naya Film Festival, but got cancelled again, due to security and theatre issues. “Legally, we’re all sorted to screen it in a preview theatre without selling tickets, but couldn’t do so as we have been denied police protection. The theatre authorities are justified to stall the screening to protect their interest,” says Pranav Ashar of Enlighten Film Society, which is hosting the event. The film was to be first screened on July 15 as the fest-opener, but the screening was then pushed forward following the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. HTC
