ne of the oldest markets in the city, this bangle market in Central Delhi is crowded with women of all ages these days. Located in the Hanuman Mandir complex at Baba Khadak Singh Marg, the market is busy due to the ongoing Navratra festival. Women are thronging the market to buy matching bangles for themselves and glass bangles to gift it to little girls on the Ashtami puja. The market is believed to be 300-years-old and remains the favourite place for bangle shopping. From traditional glass bangles to the metallic ones, the market has it all. “We get bangles from all around the country. Glass bangles come from Firozabad, lac ones from Rajasthan and the metallic ones are made in Delhi,” says Faizaan of Shama Churiwala. Here, you can get glass bangles at R20 for a dozen; the price of designer ones can go up to R400 for a pair. “Kadas are costly. They cost R300 and above. The stone-studded ones are more expensive. The lac bangles come at R100 (for four pieces),” Faizaan adds. Shopkeepers here claim that they have VIP and celebrity clientele. “This shop was built at the same time the Hanuman Temple was established. We supplied bangles for the wedding of Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter. Bangles from our shop have gone for Madonna and Miss America too,” says Babu of Babu Churiwala. The latest variety in the market is metallic bangles. They come in bright colours and are popular with college girls. “Younger women don’t want to wear glass bangles. Metal bangles go with their Western dresses,” says Salman, another shopkeeper in the area.
