The red carpet FRENZY

onight the stars will come down to earth and walk down the Red Carpet in designer gowns, designer jewellery, designer totes, designer pumps and possibly in designer lingerie too, to the Oscar ceremony. The next few days we will be bombarded with the news of dames who dazzled and those who fizzled on the red carpet. All this hype makes for a perfect publicity gimmick for the couturiers around the world and no doubt they hire the best of agents to lure in the stars to don their label. We have already seen the madness behind AR Rahman’s Oscar outfit, a man who is reticent of all this red carpet brouhaha. On the other hand, Frieda is definitely enjoying all the Marchesas and Gaultiers showered on her. One thing that bothers me about Slumdog Millionaire is why the slum kids, who too acted in the movie, were totally ignored when it came to basking in the glory of the movie’s success. I mean, the movie builds the character of the slumdog — Jamal, right from his childhood days and progresses to adolescence and adulthood. The screen time that the real slum kid has in the movie is almost equal to the screen time of Dev Patel, so why only Dev basks in the glory and not the poor kid? I read somewhere that the kid, Aayush (who plays Jamal) now wants to only wear good clothes. It’s such a pity that no designer label has come forward to give him some nice clothes. Gaultier has a kids range — Gaultier Junior, and I think if they had offered Aayush some clothes to wear, they would have earned not only publicity but loads of goodwill too. But the designer labels are blinded by a million flash bulbs that flicker on the red carpet and are floored when the star gives that vital sound byte, “Oh, it’s an Oscar de la Renta.” But hey, the red carpet frenzy has arrived in India too. Now that loads of designer labels are in India, Bollywood couldn’t have escaped the redcarpet frenzy. There’s intense lobbying by the brand pushers to get Piggy Chops or Bebo

CAPITAL BUZZ JAYDEEP GHOSH darling to strut down the red carpet in their labels. Some are willing to offer not only the gown but also free handbags and heels. The season’s hot picks are Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Asin. In the dazzle of Gucci, Dior, Chanel and Lanvin, the Manish Malhotra, Shantanu & Nikhil, Rocky S and AbuSandeep have paled. This red carpet frenzy has sprouted numerous celebrity stylists. They are having a gala time. I spoke to few of these ‘celeb stylists’ and their attitude was no less than the stars they represent. Now that the snooty brands have rack full of unsold clothes, soon you will see them dressing up soap queens for telly awards or even the likes of Rakhi Sawant and Sambhavna Seth, who would inhabit the next Big Boss series. After all a hundred day exposure on television is almost a publicity coup of sorts!

for a hide-out. The man stuck to health food as he sipped watermelon juice and gorged on veg sushi. Also present at the do were designer duo Gunjan Arora and Rahul Jain, Divya Gurware of Bridal Asia, designer Anupama Dayal and Harmeet Bajaj. — Zabeeh Afaque
