722 MATEO - SENIOR PROJ
Since the early 1960s, the Los Angeles Arts District has been a haven for artists. Today, as the District evolves and more people move to the area, the definition of an ‘artist’ has broadened. While some of these new residents have mainstream jobs, others are craftsmen, designers, or people that do creative things part-time. These people have moved to the area looking for a community of likeminded individuals. Being around other creative people is motivating and productive. Living or working among those who share your interests can benefit the group as a whole. Makerspaces are public workshops where creative people can share tools and knowledge. It is a resource for amateurs and professionals alike. The mixed-use creative housing development at 722 Mateo St, combines a public makerspace on the ground floors with a mix of several different residential unit types above. The project uses large open public makerspaces spaces and semi-private work areas to foster collaboration and learning among the maker community. By creating an environment that nourishes the creative spirit and promotes a sense of community, those that want to get involved in the creative arts and those who already are involved, can come together and learn from one another. By opening space to the public, the project also allows anyone who is interested in the field, or needs access to certain tools such as heavy machinery that they don’t normally have access to, a place to work and design freely.
Arts District Map Scale : 1”=1000’-0”
Makerspaces are public workshops where creative people can share tools and knowledge making it is a resource for amateurs and professionals alike. The Downtown LA area has a number of private art spaces for various artists, but few spaces that can be accessed by the general public. In my personal life, I’ve developed a passion for woodworking and furniture making, but it’s really difficult to find places that offer the ability to use heavier machinery that I don’t normally have access to. I felt it was important to offer people the chance to learn a new set of skills while promoting creativity within the District. The Project is located on the corner of Mateo and 7th Place, a few blocks away from the 6th Street Viaduct and north of the 10 Freeway. It is open on three sides with a back alley to the north Axonometric in Context

Tradidtional 5 over 2 Developer Model
Comparing this typology to that of a standard 5 over 2 developer model. The building accepts some of the 5 over 2 ideals, but injects new life into the building to improve the overall quallity of the space, be it from blending the public program, the unique formation of balcony space due to the rotation, and the creation of larger community space though the circulation core. I felt that given the unique and individualistic ideals of the client, this shift offered more variation and a chance for growth within thier home.

1. MASS EXTRUSION
2. PROGRAM DIVISION
3. HOUSE TYPOLOGY
The Nørrebro Commons Community Housing complex attempts to create a space that is both open to the surrounding community, and curated to the needs of the chosen group of individuals that live within the complex. After taking the full capable building envelope, and designating the ground floor as public/ semi private, the space is able to meet the needs of the community with a library cafe space, and a kitchen that can be closed off for the living residents, or rented out to the cafe. The ground floor also houses a shared living space as well as dining and laundry facilities for the residents to create social interaction.
4. ROTATE FOR VIEWS
5. COMMUNITY SPACE
Taking into consideration the surrounding buildings and views, the top residential floors are rotated slightly to align to the views of the nearby lake. this creates a shifted grid within the plan and allows for various articulations within the wall orientation to give each resident a truly unique living experience. By turning each unit into a lofted apartment, the second floor can accommodate the secondary needs of each resident as well as opening them up to a fully connected private courtyard open only to the residents so they can experience the views of the city together and create social bonds with their neighbors.
