Head Master’s

Message

Dear Flint Hill School Family, Flint Hill is a place where teaching ignites a passion for learning. You see it every day. Innovation combined with collaboration and problem solving with creativity are not “buzz words” here. It is how our students learn. The clear evidence of it is in learning opportunities like Day of Play, design thinking classes, the TEDx Youth event, and many others including “Innovation Across the Ages” that you’ll read about in this issue of the magazine. I also want to give you a little glimpse into the daily schedules of our two new assistant heads of school. They are a valuable part of the planning and vision that is helping to push us forward. The majority of this issue, however, is dedicated to so many of you who generously support Flint Hill. We are thankful for your continued and increased support. I can’t tell you how much it changes things when there is 100% of our parent board, 100% of our Board of Trustees, 100% of our staff and faculty, and the momentous shift from 46% to 70% of parents giving to the Annual Fund last year. I also want to thank our alumni who continue to give back to Flint Hill at a rate that grows each year. And, the Class of 2013 also exhibited leadership with 90% support. And who will ever forget the fun we all had with the “mustache campaign” last spring? Please visit our new website often for new ways to actively participate and to keep up-to-date with everything happening at Flint Hill. Find us on all the social media channels too. Again, thank you for your tremendous support on so many levels.

Solving Crimes, Building Career Skills When CSI and Bones had their fall television premieres in late September, the forensics class—of mostly juniors and seniors—was already hard at work examining crime scenes, gathering evidence, and unlocking mysteries. “They are learning specific investigative methods for collecting and cataloging evidence and that a well kept set of notes is key,” says upper school science teacher Ed Mathieu. “The objective is to use evidence to make decisions, and this can help students in all aspects of life.” The analytical skills they’re gaining are in demand in the workforce. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated a nearly 20 percent growth, 2010-2020, in forensic science jobs. Some typical careers are: medical examiner, DNA analyst, or crime lab analyst. Although forensics may be commonly associated with autopsy-type work, the field is vast, and technology has been an impetus for expanding opportunities to include careers in computer forensics, database forensics, or specialties related to mobile devices, audio, and video. This year’s class may hold a future lawyer, judge, forensic psychologist, forensic engineer, or one specializing in botany, anthropology, or dentistry but, for now, the students are focused on examining fibers with a microscope, recording a crime scene with photography and videography, or studying footprints as evidence. Case closed.

Parents Association Golf Invitational On May 29, 2013, 136 golfers, 35 volunteers, and 19 Husky sponsors participated in the Parents Association Golf Invitational. It represented the largest turnout of folks ever! Special thanks to Bethann Horey, Ellen Fishbein, and Justin Wheeler for chairing the event. All proceeds supported the Parents Association Endowment for Financial Aid in Honor of Sally Hazel. The participation in the tournament and funds raised exceeded all expectations. Thank you again for your continued support of Flint Hill. Mark your calendars for this year's Golf Invitational on May 29, 2014.

Step into My Digital World

For the “Step into My World” project, students in digital imaging class studied the work of artists Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, focusing specifically on their series of imaginary landscapes called “Architect’s Brother.” They also watched the masterful productions of FlewDesigns for inspiration to seamlessly blend images together using Photoshop, taking the ordinary—an apple, their own arms, or a box of tissues—into a unique creation.

Day of Play

The second annual Day of Play happened on October 4. Lower School students spent the day in small groups, collaboratively engineering toys out of cardboard and other common materials. In the afternoon, students showcased their creations.

*Vivat Las Vegas The thought of 39 of our 7-12 grade students spending a week of their summer in Vegas seems somewhat more unusual than skydiving Elvis impersonators, a more certain sighting there. Add the fact that the trip’s purpose was to attend the 60th annual National Junior Classical League convention, and you may wonder about the appeal to so many students. For our students, it’s the love they have found for Latin—a connection that their teachers have helped them discover to the language, culture, history, and relevance to today’s world. Approximately 1,300 students and teachers of Latin and Greek, from all over the nation, attended the convention, which is known for having the energy and atmosphere similar to March Madness. No business attire; T-shirts and enthusiasm, a must.

Students were actively engaged in a mix of events: participating in competitions (artistic, forensic, academic, and athletic); cheering during spirit contests; and intently listening to speakers during discamus sessions, which means, "let’s learn." As lively as their days, the evenings brought karaoke, dances, a talent show, recreational sports, and time for making more friends. Classics teacher Meghan Robertson describes the opportunities at the convention as “outlets for creativity, competition, collegiality, and camaraderie.” She too attended the convention as a student. “It was invigorating and affirming as a first time attendee and still proves to be reinvigorating as a teacher, not just from the reunion with other educators across the country but from the opportunity to interact with our

students in a different learning environment away from campus.” In addition to Robertson, the trip was chaperoned by every teacher in our Classics department—Ken Andino, Howard Chang, Brandy Henricks, and Adam Williams—as well as former Latin teacher Laurie Covington. The ties in Flint Hill’s Latin program are as strong as the program itself. From year to year, the success of the convention—both in placing well in competition and in bringing home rewarding experiences—is reflective of the work done in the classroom on a daily basis. Students flock to sign up for the annual convention not just to take a trip somewhere but because they feel they are part of something bigger. For them, what happened in Vegas, last summer, didn’t stay there but will live on in their hearts and minds. * long live in Latin

Olympian Efforts

More than 100 of our students volunteered for the Special Olympics Soccer Tournament on Sunday, September 15. About 30 from our junior varsity and varsity boys and girls soccer teams were there to serve as referees, sideline judges and scorekeepers, and to help make other athletes’ dreams come true. 9th grader Isabel Rice-Martorell explained that all of the volunteer efforts were about, “seeing the athletes not care about anything except the game.” Long before tournament day, preparations were in place to provide everything the athletes needed for them to focus only on bringing their A game. "There was remarkable support from every area of our community," said Mia Burton, our all-school service coordinator. The Parents Association took care of the concession stand. Upper school students helped to keep the games running, while lower school students stopped by to cheer and wave their handmade posters. And, every middle school student made a card to give to a Special Olympian on game day. Volunteering throughout the year includes: November - Week of Thankful Giving December - Giving Tree January - Coat Drive February - Empty Bowls March - Blood Drive April - Special Olympics Track & Field

“As a community we must take action and seize the various opportunities we have because of this school.” — Ahren Ellison, Student Council Association president

“Each and every single person in this building has the ability to be a leader and most importantly has the ability to make a difference.” Excerpts from Ahren’s speech at the All-School Gathering, Sept 10, 2013.

—Sarah Kashef, Senior class president Excerpts from Sarah’s speech at the All-School Gathering, Sept 10, 2013. “As a class, we decided to change the dynamics of leadership. We strive to meet our potential and encourage an environment here at Flint Hill where everyone has the place to thrive. Our first day of senior year, we collaborated to come up with our mission statement that reads: ’We, the dedicated, determined, and united leaders of the Flint Hill Class of 2014 will leave a meaningful legacy for the greater Flint Hill community by embracing the Husky Spirit. We will do

so by adhering to the honor code, encouraging student success, fostering and maintaining the pride we have for one another and our institution. By uniting to achieve these goals, we will nurture a challenging, safe, and inclusive school environment.’ We hope to use this mission statement as an inspiration to expect the unthinkable, expel the unacceptable, and excel at the unexpected. But realize, although we are the seniors, each and every single person in this building has the ability to be a leader and most importantly has the ability to make a difference.“

at once. In college, she hopes to pair the study of languages with business for a possible career as a translator.

“Languages really are gateways to other cultures. I get to meet people I would never have met, if I hadn’t studied their language.”

“Latin helps me think. Translating it is like a math problem with many different pieces, but you have to know the reason why you’re putting all of the pieces together and what the meaning of the problem is. All of my language classes help my writing in any class. They also help me learn discipline, because learning a language is, without a doubt, a commitment. I find it best to study at least a little every day, and doing this, as I have learned, is a good habit for any subject. And, even though it’s cliché, languages really are gateways to other cultures. I get to meet people I would never have met if I hadn’t studied their language.”

—Madison Oliver Madison’s love of learning languages began with Latin in middle school. Now, having added Chinese and Spanish, she studies three

“This is my ninth year at Flint Hill. I look around at the entire school gathered here and it makes me realize just how blessed we really are… We’ve all been given the opportunity, through our school, to reach our full potential… We must be engaged, in the classroom and also with our peers, supporting each other in our endeavors. And above all we must commit to one another. Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a civilization work, a community work. As a community we must take action and seize the various opportunities we have because of this school. If we can do this, we will all experience an amazing school year together.”

“I remember her saying that Flint Hill provides so many great opportunities for their students and that we should be able to take advantage of them.” —Courtney Wiley

“It does no good to focus on the last shot, because you can’t get that one back. You just have to hit the next one as best as you can.” —Bryce Johnson Bryce has his sights set on studying sports psychology at The College of William & Mary, where he has already verbally committed to play on the golf team. A future goal is to play professionally. He credits devoting more time to his mental game as being a key to success, in addition to his favorite club—the putter. “I read A Golfer’s Mind by Dr. Bob Rotella, and that book changed my game. It really helped me learn how to focus on every shot individually and not my score as a whole. It does no good to focus on the last shot because you can’t get that one back. You just have to hit the next one as best as you can. Also, I’ve learned how to mentally think my way around the course. I have a game plan when I play every course. I have definitely used what I’ve learned in several areas. For example, you have to focus on one test at a time in school. If you have a bad test, just forget about it, and study harder for the next one! There are several ways to apply what I’ve learned, and I’ve found it really helps me stay in the moment.”

Courtney has known Coach Jody Patrick since she attended a “Summer on the Hill” basketball camp as a 4th grader. In the summer before senior year, when two opportunities of interest became available at the same time, she talked with Coach Patrick about being torn: go with the basketball team to camp in Princeton or with Flint Hill’s service trip to Guatemala. “Coach Patrick is very easy to talk to when making decisions. I remember her saying that Flint Hill provides so many great opportunities for their students, and that we should be able to take advantage of them. She said she would fully support my decision and if Guatemala was the choice, go for it, and have a wonderful time!” From Coach Patrick’s perspective: “Honestly, this was a difficult one for me. As a basketball program leader, I ask much of my rising seniors from the leadership point of view. However, sport and basketball will always be there, and helping Guatemalan families build a better life far transcends sport. Ultimately, we—coaches and teachers— are all counselors here. When a student is unsure of a path to take, we need to listen and guide. Making the decisions for them only defers the real life choices and decisions that will be coming their way. Be a self-advocate! Though we missed her, we knew she was helping a great cause.”

So, this is the second year for TEDx at Flint Hill. What prompted you to start this event? Oftentimes we see our students excel on the field, on stage, or in class, but we never get to really hear about their hopes and dreams. I wanted to provide our students with a platform that empowers them to share their passions, their voice, and their ideas with a larger audience. Hosting a TEDxYouth day allows for student ideas to be spread locally and globally. Not only can they make a difference in their local community, but also at the national and international level as well. What are your hopes/goals for this year’s event as opposed to last year? was ignited last year with our inaugural event. The hope/goal for this year is that we will build on the success of last year’s TEDxYouth day. We hope to continue to share TED’s mission of “ideas worth spreading” with a new audience, and encourage our students to light a path, so that they may lead the way into a brighter future for us all. For those who don’t know, how would you explain TEDx? TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

TK - Mr. Thomas and a TK friend built a helicopter during centers. Students participate in centers every morning. K - Students participated in language arts centers. In this activity, students had a tub of letter tiles. They had to place the tiles on the correct square on the mat. K - Students worked on selfportraits in art. 1 - Students used geometric shapes to create a picture, and then had to identify how many of each shape they used in their picture. 2 - Globes activity. 3 - In science lab, students observed what happens to a flame and water when a jar is placed over a candle. The students also made inferences about what they observed. 4 - Students started their intensive study of the Chesapeake Bay. 5 - Students focused on making a hypothesis and testing variables, by making paper airplanes. Every student made one paper airplane that had the same wingspan and a second plane with a completely different wingspan. The first airplane served as the "control" and the different wingspan was the variable that was changed. The students then went outside to measure how far each type of airplane would fly and to see how wingspan affects flight.

Patent Bending Patents are meant to be bent, remolded and tweaked for improvement. Consider the Model T. Although a breakthrough in the auto industry, had the original design not been repeatedly altered, we would still be hand cranking our cars to start, have no air conditioning, no GPS option, and no cup holders!

AT FlInT HIll SCHool, PATenT BendInG IS actively taught and sought. e quest for tackling problems, stretching imaginations, and constructing real solutions is reinforced, TK12. Routinely, teachers challenge students with assignments to think, rethink, design, and re-engineer. eagerly, students accept. And, with each twist to try and encouraging turn to try again, their knowledge and confidence grow, as does the trust in their teachers. “I need our schematic,” said a fourth grader, who was transformed into a toy engineer, during the lower school’s 2nd annual day of Play. Working in small groups, with younger and older students paired as buddies, every TK-fourth grader was on a mission to collaborate on designing and building a toy. roughout the morning, recyclable materials began taking shape into the variety of toys the students had uniquely envisioned in their sketched concepts. Table hockey, a robotic teddy bear, a dog on wheels, an ice cream making kit were all based on known toys but produced as one-of-a-kind creations. ink about some of your best days of school or work or life, when you get so into it, so engaged in a project or working toward a common goal with the people around you, that you don’t want to stop. at Friday, october 4, was all about that kind of serious play—a fun experience that taught the kids deeper skills, whether or not they realized it. From the “I got it!” looks on their faces to inquisitive postures—leaning forward, nibbling on brain food (i.e. snacks), and hammering out the details with their co-creators— endorphins seemed to carry them from one part of the toymaking, patent-bending process to the next. ose moments are ones that they will likely recall to memory to help them problemsolve in their daily classes and as they go into the next grade and the next.

That’s So Prototypical Ancient History on many weekends, hundreds and thousands of people roll wheelbarrows out of their garages to move mulch or plants around their yards. As the fifth grade classes found out, what is now a typical gardening tool has existed for centuries, invented in China to carry military supplies. Studying about “Innovation Across the Ages,” last spring, the students learned what a difference inventions have made and can make in society. “We wanted our students to recognize how tools and inventions help to answer questions and solve problems, and how science concepts, engineering skills, and applications of technology impacted the quality of life in ancient civilizations,” says Fifth Grade Teacher denise Yassine. over several weeks, the students discovered the science behind several simple machines first built in ancient times: the rickshaw, shaduf, wheelbarrow, Archimedes’ screw, spinning wheel, and catapult. ey learned the geography and other social studies’ aspects of egypt and China, where those innovations originated. And then it was time to build their versions, as part of the Simple Machine design Challenge, and to apply their geometry skills

while following the golden carpentry rule of “measure twice, cut once.” Groups were assigned to one of the six ancient mechanisms and instructed to build—over a two-week period— several prototypes, as well as a large-scaled, functional model to exhibit on campus to an audience of students, teachers, parents, and staff.

were purposefully formed to combine students from different fifth grade classes, with whom they would typically not have the opportunity to work. “is kind of collaboration,” says Mrs. Yassine, “invites students to think beyond the product, honoring the challenges within the process.”

e design challenge had a few obstacles to maneuver. All of the planning and construction were required to take place at school. e prototypes and final product had to be built from a mishmash of items including cardboard, tape, rubber bands, legos, straws, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners. And, the groups

learning from ancient times, the students discovered the depth of simple machines, how they can evolve in small or big ways, and still serve a public need far into the future. And, perhaps, they may be one of the next inventors to build a prototype that centuries from now will be considered typical and so very useful.

Souping-up the lunch line dean of Faculty emily Sanderson, who teaches the course, describes design thinking, in part, as “a process that encourages understanding the human needs of a project.” She reminds her students to always keep the users of a space in mind; it is not only a space to be filled. As good practice, the class is designing their own learning environment. And, being in the role of the primary end-user, they have interviewed each other, as well as teachers and learning center staff for their expertise on classroom usage.

Souped-up cars are those modified to have more power, like in e Fast and e Furious movies. e problem-solving skills used to accomplish that goal is a form of design thinking, although extreme (and certainly not endorsed). is year, upper school students in a new design thinking class are focused on identifying real issues around Flint Hill’s campuses and on putting the priority for solutions into a high gear. e first items on their to-design list are in the upper school: to make the lunch line in the cafeteria more efficient and to redesign the library space to meet the resource needs and study habits of this generation and the ones who follow.

flint hill magazine

In the evolution of education from the little red, one-room schoolhouse to Flint Hill’s technologically wired dual-campuses, ideas, inventions, and innovations are bustling. is is a place where students are encouraged to challenge the patent, not simply for the sake of bending it, but with meaningful purpose to make changes for the better. <

It also confirmed for me what my English and Creative Writing students need to grow—in particular, that clear and precise feedback has the power to open creative thought in profound ways." –John Copenhaver "I experienced the wonders of Morocco not as a tourist, but as an educator. Whether I was visiting schools, attending lectures, or exploring cultural sites, having the ability to do so with French teachers from across the United States made every moment even more memorable." –Robin Goldstein "We invited a nationally renowned expert in academic coaching to host a three day training time for our Learning Center specialists. As a result, we’ve added aspects of academic coaching to all sessions, and have arranged the Upper School schedules for one-to-one sessions." –Susan Biggs "I traveled to South Africa to see 4000 year old rock art and study the ancient Sans People. My improved global perspective will make a difference in the way I teach my students about the cultural universals of society." –Denise Yassine

Class of 2013 Gift During the 2012-13 school year, the seniors were asked to make an impact on Flint Hill School with a class gift to the Annual Fund. A member of the Board of Trustees offered an incentive and challenged the class to reach 75% participation. If they reached this milestone, the school would receive an additional $10,000 towards their class gift. On March 8, they shattered the 75% mark, with 90% participation. They raised $1,802.03 plus the $10,000 bonus for reaching 90%. The class voted to designate their gift toward the Fine Arts Fund. The newest group of alumni did a great job setting the standard for Flint Hill giving.

We have made every effort to ensure that the information contained in these pages is accurate and complete. All gifts listed in this report are those received between August 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013. We are pleased to honor your request for how you would like your name to appear in this report. If you would like to change the way your name is listed, please let us know.

Sam passed away from cancer in 2006, during what should have been his senior year at the University of Virginia. At Flint Hill, Sam was a strong leader, never to waste words; sharp, witty, and always with a valuable contribution. He also loved his teachers, and, in consultation with his father, David, we knew it would be meaningful to contribute to the Annual Fund in Sam’s name. Sam loved learning and exploring, and we hope that a gift to the stewards of that process will help to ensure that many others with Sam’s brightness are being led by some of the best." Over the years he oversaw the construction of a great number of Veteran Affairs hospital complexes including a new veterans clinic at the Manila American Embassy in the Philippines. Flint Hill School is a transitional kindergarten through 12th grade independent school. Our educational approach customizes a student’s experience. Coupled with a traditional core of courses and an expansive number of resources including a MacBook/iPad for every student, the heart of learning is the interaction between the teacher and student which creates a rigorous set of expectations within a collaborative community. Founded in 1956, Flint Hill School is in the center of Fairfax County. It is a top choice for 800 families, and, on two campuses, more than 200 faculty and staff work alongside students to help them exceed wildly beyond their aspirations.

The Hill Side Kindergarteners Petition for Carrots! by Danielle Donaldson, manager of student billing, east campus lunch program and student transportation I got a letter from the kindergarten class. It was concise. There was a picture too; it spoke volumes. It was clear they were serious, adamant, and a force to be reckoned with. I was afraid. Okay, not afraid, but I knew I needed to hear the students’ plea and that this was a ’teachable’ moment—for all of us. Last spring, the kindergarten students were not pleased with one particular change I made to the lunch program. Typically, on pizza day, we include a small bag of baby carrots. To make things more interesting in the land of food service, half way through the school year, I made the decision to swap out the carrots with fruit cups. It was a bad idea. Ruby, apparently, led the effort. She and her fellow classmates decided something needed to be done about the situation, and that’s when I got the petition and picture. The solution was simple and clear; as far as the class felt, I needed to return carrots to the menu. A meeting was called, and I faced the group to answer their questions. We talked about the east campus as a whole and all the different appetites and tastes represented in the lower and middle schools. I shared with the students that it’s important for me to listen to everyone’s feedback—from the youngest students to the adults—and that thoughtful and clear comments help me better select menu items that are nutritious and fun. The “call for carrots” was a success in many ways. The kindergarten class worked together to create change. They experienced the process of open communication with their classmates and adults. They know that their voices are heard. And, most importantly to them, at the moment, their beloved vegetable is back. This is just another amazing moment at Flint Hill, and why I love my job.
