A Good “Old-Fashioned” Winter Gazette! I hope everybody’s 2014 has gotten off to a great start! Before the age of iphone, ipad, email and web sites, we used to start our New Year off in grand fashion with a Winter Zachys Gazette. Most people use the month of January and start of February as a re-set time. The assumption is made that people don’t want to buy at this time of year….so best not to try. In the past we have found the exact OPPOSITE to be true in these cold winter months.

Tasting Note Attributes

Yes, the holidays were just a few weeks ago, but the fact remains: people drink good wine all year round. I was not super popular with my marketing team as it required production of this catalogue during our BUSIEST time of the year…..the last two weeks of December. Sacrifices need to be made in the name of great wine deals for our customers…..sorry guys! Here we go with a good “old-fashioned” Winter Gazette where we have taken over 400 of our finest in-stock selections and marked them down as much as 55% OFF!! I told you already….I am VERY serious about moving a lot of boxes out the door and proving to some of my newer staff members that you can sell a TON of wine in the Winter if you set the stage properly. The stage has been set...it’s a new year….and we are ready to rock-n-roll!!

Super-Tuscans

Great White Isn’t Just For Summer

When I first tasted these well-reviewed Super Tuscans, they wowed me, but I thought a few years in the cellar could only improve them. I opened a few up recently to see how they’d progressed… and boy did my patience pay off… they’re drinking beautifully right now and I’ll leave a few more laying down to return to for years to come. At these great prices today, I highly suggest you do the same!

Why is it that refreshing whites are always relegated to summertime drinking? Amidst the holiday meals and rich winter eating, there can be nothing more satisfying than a bright and invigorating white to accompany a meal or a relaxing evening… these Italian whites hit the mark on all counts AND won’t break the bank.

z The Wizard at Work in Umbria Riccardo Cotarella (often referred to as Il Mago, or The Wizard) is kind of a big deal in Italy. Dubbed ‘one of the most influential wine personalities in the world’ by Robert Parker, Cotarella consults for over 50 different wine producers throughout Italy, as well as estates in France, America, India and Israel. At the core of Cotarella’s work is his enthusiasm for the indigenous grapes of Southern Italy, and he has likely done more for the elevation of these grapes on the international level than any other single person. Today we are featuring two estates where Cotarella consults as winemaker, both from his native Umbria. With both, it’s easy to appreciate Cotarella’s deft hand with crafting balanced and terroir-expressive wines from the indigenous and international varieties of Italy.

VITALONGA

SPORTOLETTI

Originally established in the 1950s for production of red wine and olive oil, the Vitalonga estate lies on a hill in Ficulle, near the border of Umbria and Tuscany. It’s no surprise then that the vines are devoted primarily to Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet… from which Cotarella and the Maravalle family craft stellar reds for great values. They’ve captured the attention of James Suckling, Zachys, and I’m sure they’ll do the same for you!

On the hills between Assisi and Spello in Umbria, the Sportoletti family has been producing wine for generations. Riccardo Cotarella joined forces with brothers Ernesto and Remo in 1998, and the estate consistently produces some of Umbria’s top wines - not only in terms of quality, but also bang for your buck!

The 2010 vintage has brought to Zachys a renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the wines made in our backyard. Spectacular Six!

Seven Hills – Better than Ever…Again!

We picked six of our favorite California wineries and slashed the price on a selection from each. Why? Because everyone deserves to try them! These wines made a big impression on us this past year, and we think you’ll agree that these six wines are SPECTACULAR for the price! Not yet convinced that California is going to be the next big region? One try of these wines will change your mind. –SW

Seven Hills is synonymous with Washington State winemaking – while sourcing fruit from throughout the Columbia Valley for their own wines, they’ve supplied countless tons from their Seven Hills Vineyard to wineries all over Washington State. Hailing from Walla Walla in Southeast Washington, even in difficult vintages Casey and Vicky McClellan manage to create “best ever” wines at every pricepoint. They are undoubtedly fantastic ambassadors of Pacific Northwest winemaking and will continue to be for years to come. –SW

z Andrew Will – Bordeaux in the USA Owner and winemaker Chris Camarda is a self-professed Right Bank Bordeaux enthusiast, and it shows in his red blends. He makes heavy use of Cabernet Franc and Merlot (along with bits of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) grown in famed Washington appellations Yakima Valley and Red Mountain. His balanced and artfully crafted wines make fantastic additions to any cellar, and make perfect companions for any table. There is little doubt that if these wines were made in Bordeaux they would be double the price, if not more! –SW

z Betz Family, Washington’s Master of Wine! If Andrew Will is considered “Bordeaux in the USA,” then Betz Family has to be “Rhone in the USA.” Washington State is making some of the best wines from Rhone Valley varietals (Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre) in the Americas, and Betz Family is leading the charge. Though now owned by Steve and Bridgit Griessel, Bob Betz MW still is heavily involved in making these highly cellar-worthy homages to storied Rhone appellations like Cornas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Betz sources from Red Mountain and throughout the Columbia Valley for these elegant yet robust red wines. –SW

“There’s tension between the fruit and the savory elements of this wine. Southern Hemisphere

z Shiraz, Shiraz, and More Shiraz Australia has come a long way since the “Critter Wine Infestation” of the last decade. While the labels with kangaroos and fish are still popular, we’ve seen a massive influx of quality-for-the-price Shiraz from smaller producers. Likewise, the larger producers have stepped up their game and put their resources to good use both in the vineyard and the winery. It’s as if the entire country banded together and set out to raise the profile of Australian Shiraz, and the world can only benefit from this movement. We’re witnessing Australia’s comeback, and it only gets better from here! –SW

Southern Hemisphere Value Whites It may be winter and therefore not quite “white wine season,” but any wine lover will tell you the same thing: great wine drinks well year-round! Some of the greatest values in wine today are coming from the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. These producers have separated themselves from the pack by keeping quality up and prices down, so it’s no wonder we’ve fallen in love with these wines. The fact that they’re at an EVEN BETTER price than usual is just icing on the cake. –SW

The Masters of Malbec

Concha y Toro – Chilean Institution

“This is only the beginning.” The Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin waxed poetic about the current youth movement in Argentina, and for good reason: Malbec has never been better than it is right now. Winemakers are sparing no expense in making beautiful, brooding reds with a true sense of place, and the results are clear as day. And yet, against all odds, they’re still as affordable as ever. Whenever the world markets predict Malbec’s wane, it always seems to bounce back in a huge way. Suffice to say, it has happened yet again! –SW

We’ve known about the fantastic values coming from Chile for years now. Now, thanks to massive levels of investment in viticulture and winemaking techniques, the quality of Chilean wine has been thrust into the limelight. Concha y Toro is leading the charge, to the point where “Chile or Bust” was our mantra in the first half of this year. We had a revelation about the sustained level of quality by the worldfamous winery and Chile as a whole, and we immediately grabbed up as many of their wines as we could. Now here they are, ready for others to try and shout “Chile or Bust!” from the rooftops! –SW

Beaujolais, Alsace & Burgundy

z Beaujolais

Alsace

Cru Beaujolais is back! This isn’t the piffy juice we get in November that we all hate-to-love, and love-to-hate…This is cru Beaujolais and we can’t get enough of it! The charmed 2010 & 2011 vintages in Cru Beaujolais inspired us to revisit our back vintage selections to see how they’ve developed, and we were stunned. Like finely aged Burgundy, these expressive and dynamic Beaujolais are hitting their stride, developing unique expressions of their villages. Getting Beaujolais back into your wineglass at night will be no small feat, and we recognize the challenge. That said, we also recognize the best way for you to truly understand our obsession is for us to strike a deep deal. If you’re already a Beaujolais drinker, take advantage of these discounts! If you’re looking to explore, now’s the time to jump in. After all, curiosity leads to the best discoveries.

Alsatian wines - are these French? Are they German?! For starters, the region of Alsace is located high in the mountains on France’s German border. After centuries of acting as the buffer between the two countries, Alsace has taken on a unique culture, a culmination of both France and Germany. Much like in Germany, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc reign king, however Alsatian whites are characteristically dry, more powerful and have slightly higher acidity levels than their German cousins. In our humble opinion, if you haven’t delved into the world of Alsatian whites, you’re missing out! Alsace is making a comeback, and while we re-build our Alsatian portfolio at Zachys, you can expect centuries-old producers as well as up-and-coming producers to tantalize your palate. After all, at these prices there’s no harm in experimenting.

z Germany Through heavy campaigning on the Sommelier circuit, a spotlight has been shone on the vast expressions of German Riesling, and has elevated the noble grape back onto wine lists from your local wine bar up to Michelin star-rated restaurants. Getting the word out that Riesling is the most versatile and food-friendly wine in the world has certainly made Riesling a buzzworthy varietal, but at the end of the day, German classifications, labels and pronunciations are complicated and can be intimidating. So to truly get to the crux of why sommeliers and wine geeks alike fawn over German Riesling, you’ve got to get some in your wine glass! Prepare your palate for one heck of a ride while experimenting with these German wines at deep discounts. From steely and austere to sticky sweet, we have it!

Austria: Clearly, We Love Wiengut Knoll With a quick search through our selections from Austria, it’s clear we have an affinity for the wines of Weingut Knoll. At the helm of the Knoll is third generation winemaker and owner, Emmerich Knoll, a charismatic and deeply passionate figure. When Emmerich travels he not only represents Wiengut Knoll, but also Wachau on an international level as a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus, an association of winemakers who uphold strict farming and winemaking standards and place quality control at the forefront of production. This past summer Zachys hosted Emmerich for a Knoll collector’s dinner at The Marrow in New York City where Emerrich lead a captive audience on a figurative tour through the Wachau. Here Knoll has dedicated this land to Gruner Veltliner & Riesling. Small parcels of Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller, Blauer Burgunder (Pinot Noir) and Traminer are also planted by the Knoll family, but the focus of the winery is first and foremost on Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. Their Federspiel weight wines are light as a feather with mineral laced complexity, while the Smaragd weight are intense and expansive, built to age for decades. As the wine flowed and Emmerich delved deeper into the soil complexities and vineyards aspects, so did our appreciation and understanding of these great wines… “Ah-ha” this is real Austrian wine. No cellar is complete without at least one bottle of Knoll tucked into the corner for future generations.
