Bordeaux - We are seeing a resurgence in the category and wanted to make some older, interesting wines more attractive. Focused on selling the vintages – 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Also a delicious selection of White Bordeaux and Sauternes/Barsac. Burgundy – Our emphasis is on the 2011 vintage. It is a good vintage that is being over looked due to two great vintages before – ‘09 and ‘10. We also have a great list of large formats, and producer highlights (some up and coming names we took a strong position in) of Faiveley, Pousse d’Or, Arnaud Ente, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Hudelot-Noellat….just to name a few. Rhone – We are bringing the thunder with 100 points - very discounted and some exciting big bottles… Chapoutier front and center… and new as well as some back vintage. g I know people mostly equate me with Italian wines, but we have SO MANY cool ol things going on with France’s finest that it is hard not to take note. Tri-state area customers don’t miss out on The Great Wines of Bordeaux tasting with James Suckling at City Winery on March 11th. This will be one of the finest Bordeaux tastings in the market in years….we hope to see you there. Take your time flipping through the next 33 pages as there are some INCREDIBLE deals to be had. All my best,
*Prices in this Gazette are good while supplies last until 11:59pm EST 3/26/14. Sale items are drastically reduced net prices off the regular bottle price. No additional discounts can be applied. 2006 Bordeaux “2006 was a wine ‘qui donne envie de le boire’ …the idea is that it (2006 vintage) is so attractive and beautiful that it makes you want to drink it.” James Suckling (WS) 04/07 Largely overshadowed by the 2005 vintage, 2006 has been forgotten in a lot of ways, but I urge you not to fall into this trap. Having tasted a number of 2006 vintage Bordeaux from across all appellations this past year, I can attest that there are plenty of forward and accessible wines to choose from. These wines are just begging to be consumed!

z 2007 Bordeaux “The (2007) vintage’s top wines…are so flattering, seductive, and fruit-forward…” Robert Parker 4/08. Flattering, seductive and fruit-forward, the 2007 vintage is absolutely all that Robert Parker touted. Now with some bottle age these wines are really hitting their stride and drinking beautifully. This vintage harks back to classic claret, with well integrated tannins and purity of fruit.

2008 Bordeaux “The 2008s are a pleasure to taste … Almost all the wines I tasted showed lovely perfumes, ripe and subtle fruit, refined tannins and fresh acidity. I think you would enjoy tasting most of them…” James Suckling (WS) 04/09 This under-the-radar vintage is one of the most consumer friendly vintages available. The crashing world economy in 2008 lowered pricing significantly. For long term enjoyment look to the Right bank, specifically satellite chateau of St. Emilion and Pomerol – Merlotbased wines offered the highest level of consistency.

z 2009 & 2010 – Two Vintages of a Lifetime “It is an inescapable truth that 2010 has produced another year of compelling Bordeaux that will go down as a prodigious vintage alongside 2009. Take your pick – this news is either tragic or mythical, but I have tasted enough wines from 2005, 2009 and 2010 to realize that these may be the three greatest Bordeaux vintages I have tasted in my career…” Robert Parker (WA) 04/11 The 2009 & 2010 vintages need little introduction, widely received as two of the greatest back-to-back vintages in Bordeaux, even garnering comparison to the epic 1982. With soaring reviews came sky high prices, pricing that still persists in the market. Take advantage of these deep deal prices on two of the greatest vintages in the history of Bordeaux.

Sauternes & Barsac When is the last time you drank a glass of Sauternes? For most I would imagine the response is “not recently” or shockingly “never”. This is simply a crying shame! Sauternes are some of the World’s finest wines. These little bottles of liquid gold are far more versatile than what is currently ingrained in the American mindset. Break the mould and start pairing Sauternes with your appetizer and savory courses, and you’ll never look back.

z White Bordeaux Of the Five First Growths in Bordeaux, only one Chateau is worldrenowned for both their Red and White wine - Chateau Haut Brion. The high-end whites of Haut Brion are perhaps even more famous than the eponymous Red wine. Highly collectible and age-worthy, these are serious wines that should be considered in the same class as the finest of Grand Crus in White Burgundy.

Red Burgundy 2011
Burgundy 2011 Due to the influence of Mother Nature, between 2010, 2011 and 2012, we’ve lost an entire vintage in terms of quantity. Every time we open up ‘11s for clients, they’re amazed by the quality, by how giving the wines are, and they always seem to leave with bottles in hand. We think 2011 Burgundy is one of the best mid-term wines to add to your cellar. The proof is in the bottle.

“The 2011 Gevrey Vieilles Vignes from Jean-Marie Fourrier is the finest of this lovely quartet of village wines, with a bit more mineral drive and precision than the other three this year. The bouquet is a fine mélange of cherries, strawberries, a touch of grilled meat, lovely minerality, roses and fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and tangy, with a fine core, lovely transparency, moderate tannins and a long, youthful and vibrant finish. Lovely villages...90+” JG 01/13

“Roncières is one of the smaller premier crus in Nuits, but it is beautifully-situated between les Pruliers and les Porrets on the band of premier crus to the south of the center of the village. The Chevillon vines in Roncières range from forty-five to nearly seventy years of age, and the last few vintages of this bottling have been as promising as any I have ever tasted from the domaine. The 2011 Roncières is superb and nicely reserved, offering up a pure and sappy bouquet of black cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, a touch of nutskin, a beautiful base of soil, violets and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and sappy at the core, with great focus, ripe tannins and a very long, beautifully balanced and very soil-driven finish. This is an outstanding wine in the making and not far off the brilliant 2010, which is the greatest young Roncières I have ever had the pleasure to taste from Domaine Chevillon...93” JG 01/13

“The 2011 Nuits St. Georges Clos de Marechale (red) has a wonderful bouquet with brambly black and red fruit, a touch of truffle and a scent of the sea. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannins – unassuming at first, but building in the mouth toward a structured, focused, almost symmetrical finish that delivers a long, satisfying, lightly peppered aftertaste that is classic in style. “Sweet spot Outstanding...A less elegant but every bit as complex nose demonstrates a distinctly different aromatic profile with a much earthier character to the spice, red pinot and mildly sauvage aromas. The intense and strikingly pure flavors ooze a fine and relatively discreet minerality, all wrapped in a tautly muscled, balanced and marvelously persistent finish. This harmonious effort is relatively fine by the standards of the terroir and this should amply reward mid to long-term cellaring. In a word, terrific...92-94” BH 4/13

“The Le Clos bottling from Domaine Ferret hails from a .69 hectare vineyard that lies right next to the domaine on the outskirts of the village of Fuissé, and is planted half with vines that are twenty years of age and half with vines that are forty years old. At the time of my visit, the 2011 Le Clos bottling from Domaine Ferret had been racked at the end of September and assembled, but not yet fined and was resting in tank awaiting final preparations for bottling. The wine this year was raised in forty percent new wood and was showing excellent potential, offering up a deep and classy nose of tangerine, apple, lovely minerality, citrus zest and a stylish base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with zesty acids, fine focus and a long, nascently complex and classy finish. Just lovely...92” JG 01/13

Arnaud Ente… The Next Star of Meursault? Mark our words, Arnaud Ente is the next big name in Meursault. His Bourgogne Blanc is as good as many premier crus, joining the ranks of the likes of Roulot and Coche-Dury. Producing tiny quantities of white Burgundies from Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, husband and wife team Arnaud and Marie-Odile bring a meticulousness and passion to their winemaking that shine through in each bottle from the village level Aligote and Bourgogne Blanc to their cru Meursault and Puligny-Montrachets. We can’t get enough of these beautifully pure, elegant and finessed whites that seem to get even better year after year.

An impressive group of Burgundy producers teamed up to create the charity, Les Climats du Coeur, to raise money and give back to the region. “The idea was to create a modern charity in the spirit of the Hospices de Beaune that would go primarily to benefiting less fortunate Burgundians in need of food during the cold winter months, but with thirty percent of the proceeds earmarked to go to charities run by the Abbaye de Citeaux, the Couvent de Béatitudes and the Abbaye de St. Vivant, as a reminder of the seminal role in history that these orders played in the creation of the Burgundy that we know today…” JG 11/10

Just Say PYCM! A favorite of sommeliers, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is the new name to watch out for from Chassagne Montrachet. From the famed family Domaine Marc Colin, Pierre-Yves branched out on this own in 2005, starting first with a negociant business and 6 acres of land he sourced from his family. Currently making everything from Montrachet to St. Aubin to Bourgogne Blanc, Colin has four cellars underground in the heart of Chassagne. He believes that both the must of the grapes and everything naturally occurring in the cellars contribute to the quality and character of the wines. St. Aubin makes up 60% of his portfolio, but these are no mere bottlings. His St. Aubin taste more like Puligny-Montrachet than St. Aubin, which can be attributed to the fact that all his St. Aubin plots are located on hillsides rather than flat ground. In fact, his plot in En Remilly butts up against Chevalier Montrachet, and its proximity to the Grand Cru definitely shows in the wine. I have been tasting his wines since the 2006 vintage, and each vintage continues to impress me with their brilliance and their exuberant minerality. Often compared to Domaine Coche-Dury or Domaine Roulot, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is definitely the next big white Burgundy producer! Zachys is lucky to get an allocation each year of a wide range of wines Colin has to offer. Act fast as these won’t last long, particularly while they’re on sale!

z Zachys Highlights: Hudelot-Noellat For classic red Burgundy, you cannot get any better than Domaine Hudelot Noellat. Led by Alain Hudelot-Noellat for over 30 years until 2007, this family-run estate boasts some of the sexiest holdings in Burgundy. With an impressive portfolio including Romanee St Vivant, Clos Vougeot and Suchots, the estate is one of the most sought-after in Burgundy today. Currently run by Alain’s grandson, Charles Van Canneyt, the estate’s attention to quality and excellence carries on. Their wines personify the greatness of red Burgundy: lush, balanced, wonderfully rich and intense, yet light and ethereal. They are showy and opulent, yet not massively heavy or weighed down. Garnering high praise from both wine critics and Burgundy enthusiasts, they are a must for any Burgundy lover. Just see what Allen Meadows and John Gilman have both said about the domaine. “This is a domaine that is on the rise and could potentially hit superstar status as it certainly has the vineyards to enable it to do so.” Allen Meadows 1/12 “With each passing vintage here, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat continues to climb up the hierarchy of greatest estates in the Côte d’Or.” John Gilman 11/12 I’ve tasted many vintages of their wines, as far back as a 1978 Richebourg, and I have to say I am constantly impressed by the quality of their wines. We are excited to offer you excellent deals from their 2011 vintage… scoop them up and see the greatness for yourself!

z Zachys Highlights: Domaine de la Pousse d’Or … a Force to be Reckoned With! One of the greatest-storied Burgundy properties ever, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, has a rich history filled with last minute deals, legendary winemakers and a rapid expansion to boot! Once part of a larger domaine that encompassed Romanee-Conti and Clos de Tart under the Duvault-Blochet family, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has had a presence in Burgundy as far back as 1100. Patrick Landanger took the helm in 1997 and expanded the estate, successfully adding 6 hectares to the original 13 just in the last 16 years (no easy task!). By snatching up hot properties like Puligny Montrachet Les Caillerets from Jean Chartron, and very choice parcels of Bonnes Mares, Les Amoureuses, Les Charmes and Feuselottes from former Chambolle mayor Daniel Moine-Hudelot, Landanger has established himself as a Burgundy force to be reckoned with. The recent vintages have all been critically acclaimed, and it’s not hard to see why. Extremely lush and vibrant, with the capacity to age, these wines are a nobrainer! And they are surely bound to only get better (as well as more expensive) going forward! But for the time being, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or is a steal!

Zachys Highlights: Playing with the Big Boys – Domaine Faiveley! When I was in Burgundy in May, I had the chance to visit one of the region’s biggest domaines. Totaling an impressive 125 hectares (truly an amazing feat when you consider all the small grower Burgundy producers who only have 7 or 8 hectares such as Herve Sigaut!), Domaine Faiveley is a rising star on its way to becoming one of the Big Boys of Burgundy. In the hands of seventh generation Erwan Faiveley, who took over at the young age of 25, the domaine has become one of the most consistent producers in terms of quantity and quality. With an impressive 54 domaine wines, not including all the negociant wines, the breadth of Faiveley ranges from the northerly Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin, to their monopole Corton Clos de Corton, to their Mercury La Framboisiere in Cote Chalonnaise. While they are able to compete in the same league with the Big Boys of Burgundy (in a retrospective tasting of top 2002 Burgundies held by Antonio Galloni, Faiveley’s Corton clos de Corton beat top producers such as Ramonet, Roulot, Ponsot and Leroy!), Faiveley also impresses with everyday Burgundy wines, such as their Mercury La Framboisiere, or their Gevrey village. Their wines from top to bottom are beautifully clean and pure in fruit and expression of terroir. For the longtime Burgundy lover or new enthusiast for Pinot Noir, you cannot go wrong with Faiveley. We have plenty of the recent great vintages in stock, but act fast before these gems are gone!

z The King’s Right-Hand Man We’ve talked a lot about Pierre Henri Morel, who does much of the behind-the-scenes work at the Chapoutier empire. He’s stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight, and these beautifully crafted Southern Rhone reds (made in the Chapoutier facilities) are putting him there. These wines represent some of the best values in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, bar none!

Clos St. Jean – Hedonistic and World-Class Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel teamed up with world-renowned consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie in 2002, setting out to turn their struggling estate around and once again create incredible wine. To say they’ve succeeded in the past 12 years doesn’t even begin to do it justice. Clos St. Jean now produces some of the world’s best Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and there are few who would dispute that. Jeb Dunnuck says “There are few wines in the world I’d rather drink.” Robert Parker calls them “world-class wines that are out of this world.” We say “what are you waiting for?”

Domaine de la Janasse – Southern Rhone Superstar We’ve loved these wines for a long time. They consistently overdeliver for the price, and have been highly sought-after in-store staples for years. But if you don’t take our word for it, check out what Mr. Parker has to say: “This impeccably run estate, in the capable hands of Christophe Sabon, his sister Isabelle, and their father, is one of the superstars of the southern Rhone Valley. Over the last 12-15 years, the quality of the wines has gone from strength to strength, with brilliant wines being produced in all price categories. They make sumptuous, complex, world-class red, white and rose Cotes du Rhones, and year-in and year-out, their Chateauneuf du Papes are among the top three or four wines of the vintage.” Robert Parker, October 2011

z Bullish on the Northern Rhone It really is mind-boggling to think of how many different wines can be crafted from a single grape. The Northern Rhone Valley features hundreds, if not thousands, of interpretations of the Syrah grape for their red wines. The same can be said of Viognier and their white wines. Whether from Cote Rotie in the northern end or from Cornas in the south, the producers along the Rhone River are true masters of terroir, expressing the beauty of the land in every grape and every drop of wine produced. In short: these wines are fantastic. Every bit as cellar-worthy as their top-tier cousins in Burgundy and Bordeaux, these Northern Rhone wines showcase the true potential of the valley, and will be showing beautifully for years to come.

Why Wait? Drink Now! All too often with Rhone Valley wines, you’ll hear about how you need to “forget about the wine for a few years” for it to “shed its baby fat” or “balance out.” But what if we want to take the plunge sooner than later? That’s where Zachys comes in! We have some fantastic back-vintage wines from the Southern Rhone that are hitting their stride right now, for you to open up immediately and savor on a cold winter evening.

z Twin Champions – 2009 and 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape The Southern Rhone rules, and Chateauneuf du Pape is leading the pack. A recent spate of great vintages has the entire world looking at the famous Southern France wine region, and Zachys has an embarrassment of riches from the 2009 and 2010 vintages. With 2011 in the books and a phenomenal 2012 on the horizon, it’s time to make some room in our warehouse by discounting our favorites. We’re sad to see these incredible wines go, but they’ll be better off enjoyed by our friends than just sitting in boxes! Just remember – these are the last stocks we have of these vintages, and once they’re gone…they’re gone!
