We are proud to belong to the network of Cervantes towns because of our links with Miguel de Cervantes and because of the different activities related to his figure that take place here throughout the year. n sus orígenes, la fotografía no era más que una caja de madera con un pequeño orificio y una película sensible. Desde entonces la evolución ha sido imparable. La cámara no hace al fotógrafo. Lo que antes era un laboratorio con químicos, papeles, filtros, ampliadoras de color y blanco y negro, hoy se ha convertido en un proceso digital. Carlos ha sido pionero en estas lides, innovando en el proceso digital con Kodak Premiere digital station, bajo OS Sun Microsistems, allá por finales de los 90 y ha contibuado

con su evolución de formación permanente. La labor de un profesional de la fotografía implica poder y saber adaptarse al avance de los tiempos y seleccionar cada técnica, cada objetivo y cada cámara para transmitir la magia de la luz en un instante. En este caso Yebra reinterpreta Zahara en invierno a través del objetivo de su teléfono móvil utilizando exclusivamente tecnología y software de uso público y gratuito, disponible para todos.Un nuevo punto de vista diferente. Un nuevo prisma.

Zahara en invierno son calles vacías, vida que se vive dentro de las casas. La luz zahareña matizada, blanca, al sol del viento de poniente y una atmósfera limpia cobran protagonismo en esta nueva obra de Yebra, y su reinvención de la Zahara más cotidiana y tradicional. orge Caballero es un artista Linense que lleva 35 años disfrutando de la pintura. Gran parte de su obra la realizó y ha quedado en Estados Unidos donde residió durante muchos años, muchos de estos cuadros también han volado a gran cantidad de países de todo el mundo. En los últimos siete años su dedicación a sido plena en la creación de una imagen artística para el Campo de Gibraltar, con la finalidad de producir una diversa gama de productos para el turismo.

Con más de 300 cuadros en su haber, y una veintena de murales, Jorge sigue buscando definir su estilo, entre impresionista y surrealista, entre tribal y naive. “Me encanta transmitir buena energía con el arte. Mi objetivo es idealizar nuestro entorno natural para acentuar su valor.”

orge Caballero is an artist from La Linea who has been enjoying painting for 35 years. Much of his work was done and has remained in the United States where he lived for many years, many of these paintings have also flown to a large number of countries around the world. In the last seven years his dedication has been full in the creation of an artistic image for the Campo de Gibraltar, in order to produce a diverse range of products for tourism.

With more than 300 paintings to his credit, and twenty murals, Jorge continues to seek to define his style, between impressionist and surrealist, between tribal and naive. “I love transmitting good energy with art. My goal is to idealize our natural environment to accentuate its value.”

ace doce años decidí empezar un grupo de senderismo gratuito con una amiga, Liene. El primer año se hizo popular entre los internacionales que vivían en La Linea, años mas tarde, la comunidad ha crecido hasta casi tres mil personas. Este grupo está compuesto por un 50% internacionales, 25% Gibraltareños y 25% de gente de diferentes partes del Campo de Gibraltar. La idea siempre ha sido acercar la gente a la naturaleza para crear mas apreciación por esta, el ejercicio, crear nuevas amistades, enseñar la belleza del sur de España y por último unir a las comunidades de la bahía. En este tiempo cientos de personas han pasado por el grupo. Hemos salido al campo cada domingo y muchas veces con gente de mas de 25 países diferentes en un día. Llevamos 12 años difundiendo de la belleza natural del estrecho a través de las redes sociales, y así hemos llegado a cada rincón del planeta. Sunny Walkers se ha convertido en una familia muy grande de gente de diferentes países. Existe una Hermandad entre todos, sobre todo en el núcleo de los que llevan viniendo muchos años. welve years ago I decided to start a free hiking group with a friend, Liene. The first year it became popular with internationals living in La Linea, years later the community has grown to almost three thousand people. This group is made up of 50% international, 25% Gibraltarian and 25% people from different parts of the Campo de Gibraltar. The idea has always been to bring people closer to nature and so create more appreciation for it, exercise, create new friendships, show the beauty of southern Spain and finally unite the communities of the bay. In this time hundreds of people have passed through the group. We have gone out to nature every Sunday and many times with people from more than 25 different countries in one day. We have been spreading the natural beauty of the strait for 12 years through social networks, and thus we have reached every corner of the planet. Sunny Walkers has become a very big family of people from different countries. There is a Brotherhood among all, especially in the nucleus of those who have been coming for many years. Y en esas estamos, cuando cientos de zahareños asaltan las calles vestidos de creatividad y de color, dejando atrás, cada uno en su casa, la vergüenza, luciendo disfraces imposibles.

Fiesta pagana donde las haya, irreverente y antaño clandestina, que rinde adoración a Don Carnal. Deshinibición, fiesta y locura son ingredientes suficientes para que sea un éxito. Mira si no cómo la gente se toma la realidad y la utiliza para hacer la parte de su vida durante unos días. El triunfo de la canalla. Delante, el colorista y teatral entierro de la duquesa, y los hábitos del sacerdote inventados con una verde cortina de salón. A la izquierda una famosa corrupta hecha presa por los cuerpos de seguridad. Detrás, unos níveos maniquíes replicantes huyen de los escaparates, jaulas de cristal, dando rienda suelta a su alegría carnavalesca. Otra fiesta típica de la provincia de Cádiz, patrimonio, industria, y cultura que en Zahara toma una dimensión particular. Crítico, cínico, irónico, estético, el sur se viste de sur y se ríe de sí mismo. La alegría de vivir que caracteriza Zahara y nos regala cada día de Carnaval, puede que hasta el año que viene. Carpe diem, lo que pasa en Zahara, en Zahara se queda.

o se puede entender la historia de Zahara de los Atunes sin las “Casas Cañón”, o más bien cómo las conocemos los Zahareños, los “cañones”. “Casas” por ser edificaciones de poca altura y principalmente destinadas a viviendas a lo largo de su historia, y “Cañón” debido al nombre de la bóveda que las cubre. Estas casas no sólo se destinaron a vivienda, sino que también fueron tabernas y tiendas, cómo están volviendo a ser en la actualidad. La primera constancia que se tiene de ellas es en un grabado de Van den Wyngaerde sobre el año 1567. El objetivo de

la construcción de este tipo de bóveda era defenderse del ataque de los piratas que solían prenderle fuego a las construcciones existentes. Fueron mandadas a construir por los Duques de Medina Sidonia e inicialmente eran unas sesenta casas y de las que ya sólo quedan una pocas a lo largo de la calle Real y Agustín Medina Chico. He tenido la gran suerte de haber vivido durante muchos años en una de estas casas, con la sensación de vivir en un trocito de la historia de mi pueblo, y mi profesión me ha permitido rehabilitar algunas de ellas, con un gran cariño en cada intervención.

El sistema constructivo del que se compone estas casas cañón es de muros de mampostería de piedra recibidos con argamasa, de un metro aproximado de espesor para soportar los empujes, y bóveda de cañón de ladrillo de adobe las situadas en calle Real y de bóveda de piedra plana en la calle Agustín Medina Chico. Probablemente estuvieran revestidas de morteros de cal. No se trata de construcciones independientes, sino de una larga bóveda en la dirección de la calle compartimentada interiormente en varias casas. Dicho espesor proporcionaba un gran confort térmico, aunque el hecho de ser de piedra daba lugar a humedades por capilaridad.

Actualmente hay varias de ellas cuya bóveda aún pueden verse desde el exterior, en cambio otras hay que pasar al interior para observarlas, puesto que por necesidades han edificado en planta alta. He oído a mis vecinos más mayores diversas teoría de cómo se construyeron estas bóvedas de cañón, pero según los vestigios encontrados durante las rehabilitaciones y común en todas, lo más probable es que se utilizaran cimbras de madera que apoyaban sobre viguetas también de madera empotradas en los muros de piedras. Esos huecos donde apoyaban las viguetas pueden observarse en las rehabilitaciones.

Grabado tengo en la memoria la imagen de las familias encalando las fachadas y dando aceite al exterior de las bóvedas para impedir las filtraciones de agua, cómo mantenimiento de las casas. En algunos casos estos cañones han estado ocultos interiormente bajo algún falso techo y tapados a la vista exterior con pretiles, por eso han pasado desapercibidos durante muchos años, aunque los que lo habitábamos lo conocíamos perfectamente. La curiosidad por conocer más a fondo el sistema constructivo de los cañones me ha llevado en cada intervención a ir un poco más allá, hasta el punto de que en mí

última intervención dejar al descubierto no sólo los muros y bóveda, sino también la cimentación, visible tras un suelo de vidrio pisable, dejando a la vista toda volumetría y características del cañón, apreciándose el conjunto desde la plaza de Tamarón. Las rehabilitaciones que he practicado han consistido en dejar al descubierto los materiales que componen estas “Casas Cañón”, primero para evitar que se deterioren más, sobre todo el ladrillo ya que es un material más débil y en algunos casos muy deteriorados. Y en segundo lugar para mostrar el sistema constructivo del que se componían.

Para ello se ha empezado realizando un cuidadoso picado manual de las distintas capas de revestimiento que han ido cubriendo con el paso de los años tanto los muros cómo la bóveda. Siguiendo con el vaciado del terreno bajo la solería actual hasta el arranque de la cimentación. Proceso en el cual se ha encontrado un terreno fangoso con alta presencia de humedad, debido a la cercanía al río Cachón y causante de las humedades por capilaridad tan habituales en estas casas. Durante este proceso, y en un caso en concreto, aparece parte de la solería primitiva de la casa, compuestas de piedras jabalunas planas irregulares, la cual se ha reutilizado en el fondo de excavación a modo decorativo. Posteriormente se ha procedido a chorrear con arena de sílice a poca presión todo el conjunto para quitar los pequeños restos adheridos tanto a la piedra cómo al ladrillo y que no pudieron ser extraídos de modo manual. A continuación se sustituye las piezas más deterioradas por las recicladas de la propia obra. En alguna ocasión se produce desprendimiento de pequeño material del rejuntado del ladrillo, en forma de arena, procediendo en tal caso a la aplicación de un barniz de fijación incoloro y transpirable. En todos los casos se ha intentado primar la esencia de la construcción primitiva a la decoración, rescatando el origen constructivo de nuestro pueblo.

he history of Zahara de los Atunes cannot be understood without the “Casas Cañón”, or rather, as we Zahareños know them, the “canyons”. “Casas” because they are low buildings and mainly used as homes throughout its history, and “Cañón” because of the name of the vault that covers them. These houses were not only used as housing, but also as taverns and shops, as they are becoming again at present. They are first recorded in an illustration by Van den Wyngaerde in 1567. The purpose of the construction of this type of vault was to defend against attacks by pirates who used

to set fire to existing buildings. They were ordered to be built by the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and initially there were about sixty houses of which only a few remain along Calle Real and Calle Agustín Medina Chico. I have had the great fortune to live for many years in one of these houses, with the feeling of living in a little piece of the history of my town, and my profession has allowed me to rehabilitate some of them, with great dedication in each intervention.

metre thick to support the thrusts, and a barrel vault made of adobe bricks in Calle Real and a flat stone vault in Calle Agustín Medina Chico. They were probably lined with mortar. These are not independent constructions, but rather a long vault in the direction of the street, compartmentalised internally into several houses. This thickness provided great thermal comfort, although the fact that they were made of stone led to capillary dampness.

as they have been built on the upper floor. I have heard different theories from my older neighbours about how these barrel vaults were built, but according to the remains found during the renovations and common to all of them, it is most likely that they were built using wooden falsework supported by wooden beams embedded in the stone walls. These hollows where the joists rested can be seen in the renovations. I have impressed on my memory the image of families whitewashing the façades and oiling the outside of the vaults to prevent water seepage, as a way of maintaining the houses. In some cases these canyons have been hidden inside under a false ceiling and covered from view with parapets, so they have gone unnoticed for many years, although those of us who lived there knew them perfectly well. My curiosity to learn more about the construction system of the canyons has led

me in each intervention to go a little further, to the point that in my last intervention I left not only the walls and vault exposed, but also the foundations, visible behind a walkable glass floor, leaving all the volumetry and characteristics of the canyon in view, the whole being visible from the Plaza de Tamarón. The restorations that I have carried out consisted in exposing the materials that make up these “Casas Cañón”, firstly to prevent them from deteriorating further, especially the brick, as it is a weaker material and in some cases very deteriorated. And secondly to show the construction system of which they were composed. To do this, we began by carefully removing by hand the different layers of covering that have covered both the walls and the vault over the years. This was followed by the emptying of the ground under the current flooring up to the start of the base of the building’s foundations. In this process, a muddy ground

with a high presence of humidity was found, due to the proximity to the river Cachón, which is the cause of the capillary damp that is so common in these houses. During this process, and in one specific case, part of the primitive flooring of the house appeared, composed of irregular flat jabaluna stones, which was reused at the bottom of the excavation for decorative purposes. Afterwards, silica sand was blasted with low pressure to remove the small remains adhering to both the stone and the brick that could not be removed by hand. The most deteriorated pieces are then replaced with those recycled from the building site itself. Occasionally, small pieces of material from the brick grouting have come loose, in the form of sand, in which case a colourless, breathable fixing varnish has been applied. In all cases we have tried to give priority to the essence of the primitive construction over decoration, rescuing the constructive origin of our village.

Náufrago VOLUNTARIO

¿Puede un hombre sobrevivir en el mar comiendo y bebiendo exclusivamente de lo que encuentre? Él cree que sí. Tras varios días como náufrago, el Dr. Alain Bombard descubre algo importante al ser rescatado.

espués de atender como médico a 43 marineros ahogados en el naufragio del buque de cuatro palos Pamir, en el Canal de la Mancha, el Dr. Alain Bombard quedó profundamente impresionado por la muerte de 80 personas y convencido de que los naufragios eran inevitables. Pero también de que era factible salvar las vidas si se actuaba con un mínimo de coherencia. Para eso, el doctor tenía una teoría. El ser humano puede sobrevivir en el mar con lo que el propio mar le da en caso de naufragar.

Su hipótesis, que va en contra de lo que él comienza a llamar sarcásticamente ‘especialistas’, produce tal revuelo que sólo encuentra una forma de comprobarla: Convertirse voluntariamente en un náufrago en una embarcación inflable, parecida a las usadas por los auténticos náufragos.

¿DÓNDE Y CUÁNDO PROBAR?

El Atlántico es la respuesta, pero Bombard prefiere andar con cautela y su primer intento lo realiza en el Mediterráneo, junto con Jack Palmer. En el año 1952, a bordo de una embarcación nueva en la época, las inflables Zodiac, de las que ningún marinero clásico se fiaba, decide embarcarse en una travesía

desde Mónaco hasta América, a través del Atlántico, con escasos utensilios, sin alimentos y prácticamente cero agua. El Dr. Bombard se convirtió así en un náufrago voluntario. Sus principales problemas no serían el hambre y la sed, tal como había previsto, sino la soledad y la fuerte presión psicológica.

Partió del puerto de Mónaco, y después de una agónica etapa a través del Mediterráneo que casi le cuesta su vida y la de su compañero, desembarcan al fin en las Baleares donde deciden replantear su viaje y partir, quizás, desde las costas marroquíes, Tánger o Casablanca, para evitar el mortal, imprevisible y traicionero Mediterráneo.

Pese a lo exitoso de esta primera travesía, la prensa se muestra reacia a aceptar algo de parte de quien no es un marino consumado y esto influye en su principal patrocinador, quien le abandona. Y no sólo en él, pues también Palmer se ve influenciado y decide, literalmente, abandonar el proyecto. Después de esperarlo varias horas en la playa, Bombard

sabe que Palmer no regresará. Es entonces cuando decide emprender la travesía, el experimento, la aventura en solitario. EL HEREJE DEL MAR

En su pequeña embarcación Zodiac tan sólo llevaba alimentos de emergencia sellados, utensilios básicos de pesca y una peque-

ña vela que apenas le sirvió de nada. ¿Cómo bautizó a su balsa? Pues evidentemente con un nombre adecuado a lo que pensaban las fuerzas vivas de la época y los marineros de toda la vida: L’Heretique (El Hereje). Se alimentó en su periplo marino de agua de mar, solo dos tazones diarios, agua dulce de la lluvia (cuando llovió), extracto de peces (cuando caían dentro de la balsa de noche, los prensaba y sacaba el jugo, que se bebía) y plancton que filtraba del agua con una especie de manga de tela con un palo de la que obtenía la vitamina C al extraerla de las algas marinas y del plancton. El régimen alimenticio debía de ser espartano dado que llegó con 25 kilos menos, pero vivo tras sobrevivir 65 días en solitario en una demostración técnica

de supervivencia que jamás había sido superada por nadie. En la soledad del mar, náufrago, las vivencias cotidianas son más agudas, el hambre es identificada en varias etapas, el dolor, la propia curación, el deterioro del cuerpo, la sed calmada con agua de mar, el frío, pero sobre todo, una vez más, la soledad.

Tras encuentros con tiburones, ballenas, delfines, pero sobre todo, encuentro con sí mismo, Bombard llega a América el 23 de diciembre de 1952, después de casi 70 días de singladura, convirtiéndose así en un personaje legendario que ha pasado a la fama, aunque su obra ha sido poco difundida incluso entre los manuales de supervivencia para náufragos, pese a ser material básico de referencia. El viaje de Bombard no es sólo un cruce más del Atlántico a bordo de su L’Hérétique, sino también contra lo que estaba establecido como ortodoxo entonces.

fter attending as a doctor to 43 sailors drowned in the wreck of the four-mast ship Pamir, in the English Channel, Dr. Bombard is profoundly affected by the death of 80 people and convinced that shipwrecks are inevitable. But he is also sure that saving lives is feasible if a certain level of coherence is maintained. Doctor has a theory. In the event of being shipwrecked, human beings can survive at sea with that which sea itself can provide. His hypothesis, which goes against those who he begins to sarcastically call ‘specialists’, causes such a stir that he only sees one way to prove it: to voluntarily shipwreck himself on an inflatable boat similar to those used by the real shipwreckees. WHERE AND WHEN WILL THE EXPERIMENT TAKE PLACE?

The answer is the Atlantic, but Bombard prefers to be cautious and his first attempt

will be on the Mediterranean, together with Jack Palmer. In 1952, on board a vessel that was new at the time, the Zodiac inflatable, which no traditional sailor had faith in, he decides to embark on a transatlantic crossing from Monaco to America, with limited tools, no food and practically no water. This is how Dr Bombard became a voluntary shipwreckee. His main problems would not be hunger or thirst, as he expected, but the solitude and intense psychological pressure.

Despite the success of this first voyage on the Mediterranean, the press was reluctant to accept something from someone who wasn’t an accomplished sailor and this influenced his main sponsor, who deserted him. Palmer was also influenced and decided to abandon the project. After waiting for him for several hours on the beach, Bombard knew that Palmer would not return. That is when he decided to embark on the voyage, the experiment, the adventure, alone.

He left the port of Morocco and after an agonising stretch across the Mediterranean which nearly cost him his life and that of his companion, he landed at the Balearics where they decided to rethink their voyage and to start, perhaps, from the Moroccan coast, from Tangiers or Casablanca, in order to avoid crossing the lethal, unpredictable and treacherous Mediterranean.

THE HERETIC OF THE SEA.

On his small Zodiac vessel, all he carried was sealed emergency rations, basic fishing tools and a very small sail which was barely any use. How did he christen his raft? Well, evidently, with a name that suited what the leaders and old sailors of the time thought: L’Heretique (The Heretic) He fed himself on his voyage with sea water, just two bowls per day, freshwater from the rain (when it rained), fish extract (when they fell into his boat at night, he pressed them to extract the juices, which he drank) and plankton which he filtered from the water using a kind of canvas strainer with a stick, with which he also obtained vitamin C, extracted from seaweed. His diet must have been austere given that he arrived 25 kilograms lighter, but he was alive after 65 days alone at sea in a technical demonstration

of survival unmatched by anybody. With the loneliness of the sea, shipwrecked, everyday experiences become more acute; hunger goes through various stages -pain, cleansing, the deterioration of the body-, thirst is quenched with sea water, there is the cold but, above all, the loneliness. After encounters with sharks, whales, dolphins, and above all with himself, Bombard reached America on December 23, 1952, after almost 70 nautical days. He thus became a legendary figure who has gone into history, although his work has been poorly disseminated even in the survival manuals for shipwreckees, despite being basic reference material. Bombard’s journey was not just another Atlantic crossing on board L’Hérétique, it was

also an affront to what had been established as orthodox until then. THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS EXPLOIT

After his demonstration, the safety regulations on the sea changed radically: the self-inflating rafts became obligatory and provisioned with emergency supplies such as water filters, flares, fishing equipment with artificial bait... and a vast number of professional sailors that have lost their boats over the last 50 years owe their lives to his seafaring madness and his suicidal adventure. Thanks to enterprising, adventurous, idealistic madmen such as Dr Bombard, the drinker of salty waters, the human race advances on a daily basis. Only those that are mad enough to believe they can change the world are the ones that change it.

EL ESPECTÁCULO ESTÁ EN EL AIRE

e la Estación de San Roque a Castellar de la Frontera, siguiendo la línea férrea, las cigüeñas han constituido una singular colonia que merece la pena visitar. En los postes electrificados o de telefonía construyen sus majestuosos nidos, auténticas obras de ingeniería natural que llegan a pesar desde 30 hasta 600

kilos. No es raro verlas haciendo acrobacias para llegar a los nidos haciendo verdaderos esfuerzos con sus casi dos metros de envergadura. La cigüeña blanca fue declarada, en 1981, especie protegida, y está incluida en los catálogos nacional y regional de especies amenazadas. Caballo de batalla de ornitólogos y ecologístas, la verdadera

realidad de esta especie discurre entre la alta tensión de los cables electrificados, las carreteras, los venenos y los pesticidas. Hoy, estas aves migratorias se han convertido en sedentarias. rom Estación de San Roque to Castellar de la Frontera, following the railway line, storks have built a unique colony which is worth visiting. In the electricity and telephone posts they build their majestic nests, true masterpieces of natural engineering, which weigh between 30 to

600 kilos. It’s not unusual to see them performing acrobatics to reach their nests, making real efforts at their nearly two metres in height. In 1981 the white stork was declared a protected species, and it is featured in national and regional lists of endangered species. A key issue for ornithologists and

ecologists, the true reality of this species lies in the high tension of electrified cables, motorways, poisons and pesticides. Today, these migratory birds have become sedentary. Natives of Africa, Europe and Asia, for many years the warmth of our climate and abundance of food have made them our year-round neighbours.

Pueblitos pesqueros, campamentos estacionales del litoral donde se congregaban las familias para convivir y compartir el sagrado mundo del atún y el rito de su captura mediante un arte de pesca natural e inteligente, ingenioso e ingeniero, esforzado, valiente y temerario, multitudinario y forzosamente organizado bajo férreo ordeno y mando. Medio de vida, trabajo y comida. Fervorosa secta del pagano dios Tó. Mito del atún cuyo incansable corazón se materializa en la oscura mancha que

cada año atraviesa los mares devorando cuantas almas osan ponerse en su camino. Descomunal fuerza de la naturaleza. Bestiario marino de miles de torpedos vivos y mazizos programados para explosionar su desove en las cálidas aguas del Mare Nostrum. Sólo la generosa voluntad divina desvía hacia el litoral a unos cientos de individuos que, conscientes de su fatal destino, son sacrificados en beneficio de la especie y como pago del tributo debido a quienes son guardianes de las Columnas de Hércules que dan acceso franco al Éstrecho. Mitad marineros/pescadores, mitad camperos/pastores. De los rediles a las redes. Del chillerío a los mudos coletazos, del capataz al capitán, de la matanza al ronqueo, de la caña de lomo a la mojama, de la carrillada a la facera. Siempre sudor, sangre y sufrimiento. A veces, euforia y cánticos. Subsistencia y devoción. Mitos y ritos que mantienen al gaditano con el alma partía.
