Carta del bienvenida Welcome letter

Después de muchos kilómetros y unos cuantos años a las espaldas, recalé en Zahara. Sin apenas darme cuenta, pasé de nómada a zahareño -o zaharahui, como llaman en este pueblo a los forasteros que se establecen aquí-. Cada vez me cuesta más cruzar el Cachón para irme al mundo; ese río se ha ido convirtiendo, poco a poco, en una frontera difícil de franquear. Y es que en ese breve espacio que hay entre el puente y el faro de camarinal encuentro cuanto necesito a estas alturas. Aquí está la deslumbrante luz del aire, el verde esmeralda de las olas y el azul intenso del cielo. El calor de la arena finita y el viento que todo lo lleva y todo lo trae. Pero sobre todo aquí están mis momentos mágicos, perfectos. Aquellos que comparto con la gente de Zahara, sin prisas, día tras día, mes tras mes. Ellos me han hecho comprender lo que es estar en casa, entre los míos. ¡Cómo no voy a ser adicto a este pueblo! Sólo puedo decir: Gracias por darme el Sur. n

After many kilometres and a number of years on my shoulders, I landed in Zahara. Without even noticing, I have gone from nomad to Zahareno or Zaharahui, which is what people who settle from outside are called here. Each time it is more difficult to cross the line to go into the outside world. Bit by bit, this river has become a frontier difficult to breach. And it is in this small space between the bridge and the Camarinal lighthouse that find all need now. Here is the dazzling light, the emerald green of the waves and the intense blue of the sky. The heat of the endless sand is here and the wind that blows everything away and brings everything back. But above all, my perfect magical moments are here. Those moments shared with the people of Zahara, unhurried, day after day, month after month. They have made me understand what it is to feel at home, amongst friends. How could I not be addicted to this town! I only wish to say: Thank you for giving me the South! n

REINVENTING ZAHARA EVERY DAY

El pasado año fue muy especial en Zahara de los Atunes. El trabajo y la dedicación, el cariño de muchas personas dió sus frutos y pudimos disfrutar del Gran Premio Atlanterra y sus carreras de caballos en nuestra playa y su Torneo de Polo Arena. Vientos de atún ya ondean en nuestro pueblo con su nueva escultura y veleta, característica y ya patrimonio de todos los zahareños, que también se han atrevido a poner música y letra a nuestra Ruta del Atún. La presencia intensiva en Fitur, el nuevo número de nuestra revista que tiene en sus manos y la colaboración de Enagas, que donó una furgoneta, hacen que Zahara se reinvente y crezca día a día. Gracias a todos nosotros. Porque Zahara es el sueño de muchos. Zahara es labor de todos. n

2012 was a very special year in Zahara. The intensive work, dedication and love of a lot of people made possible Gran Premio Atlanterra´s Derby and Polo Tournament. Winds of tuna already wave in our town, with it´s new sculpture ,property and patrimony of all zahareños and zaharahuis, who also dared to create music and lyrics to our famous Ruta del Atún. Our presence at FITUR, the new issue of Zahara Magazine you are holding in your hands and the help of Enagas, who donated a truck, helped Zahara to grow and reinvent itself every day. Thanks to all of us. Because Zahara is the dream of many peaple, Zahara is everyone’s job.n

Zahara está viva todo el año. Su corazón, color arena, sigue latiendo al acabar el verano y son muchos los que se niegan a dejar de disfrutarla cuando el otoño se cuela por la Sierra de la Plata e inunda este pueblo gaditano de ocres tonalidades. Los que tienen la suerte de poder hacerlo, saben que en Zahara el sol luce casi cada día, da igual la estación del año, si llueve o está tronando; siempre hay un instante para encontrarlo. La playa, esa que en verano refresca y relaja a sus visitantes, se transforma en un lugar infinito y romántico. n solitario escenario en el que perderse, quizás, para encontrar el alma. El refugio perfecto de amantes y enamorados, de corazones rotos, de buscadores de sue os. n mirador privilegiado hacia otros mundos que, en invierno, obsequia, a quienes deciden quedarse junto a él, con algunas de las estampa más impresionantes del planeta. Y es que, vivir todo el año en Zahara lleva implícito, también, tener un buen puñado de amigos: todo el pueblo, que no es poco. La ‘Levantá’ del atún llega a Zahara cada primavera desde tiempos inmemorables. Es el culmen de una pesca artesanal, la de almadraba, que corre por las venas de este pueblo del sur y que le aporta su más pura esencia. La almadraba conforma un peculiar laberinto de redes marinas que aguardan pausadas frente a la costa a la espera del paso de los atunes en su viajar hacia el cálido mar Mediterráneo. El día bonito, como llaman los marineros al de la ‘Levantá’, se repite incesante a través de los tiempos para llevar a las mesas zahareñas el mejor atún rojo. Un arte que pasa de padres a hijos manteniendo vivo el patrimonio más preciado de Zahara de los Atunes. Al llegar el momento, cuando el copo está lleno, los que sa-

ben hacerlo se preparan y el pueblo entero espera a que suene el atún; a que llegue el ronqueo de esa primera ‘Levantá’ que a ara vive a i o o una fie ta Las redes se izan y los marineros comienzan su ritual. To dominate the Strait and regain their kingdoms. And, as an old Navy saying goes: ‘Whoever dominates the Strait, dominates the seas. Whoever dominates the interior seas, will attain domination of the big oceans and with them: the world.n

Un extenso conjunto de fortines que dan forma a la mayor construcción bélica del pasado siglo XX: La gran frontera del Sur. Es curioso como la idea de amenaza, aun siendo infundada, puede conducir al hombre a intentar protegerse por todos los medios. Esto, concretamente, pasó en España y, su resultado, se pude hoy contemplar a través de cientos

de bunkers repartidos por el Estrecho, testimonio inerte de un pasado que no fue. THE RAMPARTS OF THE STRAIT The landscape of the Strait is scattered with hundreds of defensive sites. An extensive chain of small forts that form the largest military construction of the past twentieth century: The frontier of the South It is strange how the idea of a threat, although without foundation, can lead man to try to protect himself by any means possible. This is exactly what happened to Spain and today, the result can be seen in the hundreds of bunkers distributed along the Strait, passive testament to a past that never happened. It all took place within the context of the Second World War, shortly after the end of the Civil War. The comings and goings of ships and armies around the Rock of Gibraltar was interpreted by Francoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spies as an im-

minent French/English attack to the area. In response, it was decided to seal defences with a network of small forts, from the river Guardiaro up to the beaches of Conil, near to Cabo de Roche. Nearly ninety kilometres, over which more than five hundred bun ers were distributed, with the intention of avoiding the feared assault. These would then have been converted into part of the modern defence system of the Campo de Gibraltar. In ahara, between the ermans each and tlanterra each, ou can find one of these strange structures that in some wa s defines and s mbolises this fringe coast. Ants nests that today remain motionless, peek out of the coast , as if waiting the arrival of a battle which, luckily, does not arrive.n

La libertad tiene en Cádiz su casa y su refugio. Fue en ella, precisamente, donde el Liberalismo alzó su voz con más fuerza que nunca, para formular la primera constitución española; la de 1812. Con ella, llamada cariñosamente La Pepa por aprobarse un 19 de marzo, se abrieron las puertas a la modernidad en España para dejar entrar conceptos, tan grandes, como Soberanía Popular, División de Poderes, Libertad de Expresión y de Imprenta o Educación Universal.

En 2012, se cumplieron doscientos años de este histórico y revolucionario episodio y la ‘Tacita de Plata’ quiso rememorarlo por todo lo alto, tal y como se merecía. Doces meses dedicados a no olvidar a La Pepa, a esa Carta Magna que quiso acabar con el Absolutismo. A esa ópera prima gaditana que soñó con la desaparición de la sociedad estamental y un camino de derechos para todos. LA TERRAZA TU JARDÍN Así me gustaría que fuese el jardín de mi casa. Mitad patio y mitad terraza. Con una pequeña pérgola y unos cuantos sofás. Muchos arriates con flores y mosaicos por todas partes. Con mesas llenas de amigos todo el día. Me gustaría que vinieran a desayunar. Les prepararía un fantástico desayuno con chacinas ibéricas y zumos de frutas.

A los que vinieran al medio día a guarecerse del sol bajo los toldos, les pondría cerveza helada y salazones, almendras fritas y buen jamón. También me gustaría que vinieran aquí a la hora de la sobremesa. A tomar café, copa y puro, si hace falta. Les haría cocktails con colores y mucha imaginación.

Y al caer la noche les pondría música. Y unos gin-tonics fantásticos. Y abriría una botella de buen vino para prolongar la conversación. Les diría que se quedaran a dormir en La Hospedería, que estamos en el pueblo y junto a la playa. Pero este no es mi jardín. Es el de ustedes, que lo hacen posible día a día.n

LA SILLA DEL PAPA

La Silla del Papa, en la cima de la Sierra de la Plata, atesora uno de los miradores naturales más privilegiados del Sur. Una ruta muy recomendable para buscadores de las más bellas panorámicas. Llegar hasta este importante yacimiento arqueológico situado a cerca de quinientos metros de altura no será, sin embargo, tarea fácil. La ruta es famosa por lo angosto y empinado de su camino. Aunque, merece la pena. l lle ar a la u re el ur e ue tra infinito de de e te unto Presto a ser contemplado una y otra vez; sin descanso.

Desde las peñas de este rocoso lugar milenario, al oeste, se divisa la costa de Zahara de los Atunes, Barbate, con sus bellos acantilados, el Cabo Trafalgar, Bolonia y, a lo lejos, incluso, la tan lejana África. Al interior, aguarda la Sierra de Retín, los vastos campos eólicos e, incluso, al fondo, la imponente Vejer de la Frontera. Son los caminos de Cádiz, siempre dispuestos a sorprender a quien los mora. A pesar de haber sido transitados desde tiempos milenarios, nunca dejan de conducir hasta lugares imaginados que, como de La Silla del Papa, aguardan tranquilos para ser, una y otra vez, admirados.n

En 2013 han vuelto a hacerlo, conquistando el primer premio de Comparsas en Algeciras y en San Roque, y levantando al público en numerosas ocasiones allí donde han actuado. Un ru o de re o de analla en errado en una r el fi ti ia de de donde dan su particular versión de la vida sobre temas tan cotidianos como los desahucios, las hipotecas, el paro, los reyes magos, las

madres... Regalando pasodobles a Ortega Cano, Urdangarín o al alcalde de Algeciras, Landaluce. Desde la barriada de San Bernabé, pasando por la célebre peña Cine Cómico, los ensayos y puesta en escena en el Teatro Florida, hasta su actuación en el Gran Teatro Falla, de Cádiz. Navegar por el Estrecho de Gibraltar supone mucho más que un simple desplazamiento geográfico. Es dar un paso de un mundo a otro, de una religión a otra, de un continente a otro, de una cultura a otra. Entre el océano atlántico y el mar mediterráneo, el Estrecho es paso obligado, a diario y a través de los años, de cientos de miles de embarcaciones de mayor o menor tamaño. Previsión. Corriente. Derrota. Marea. Abordaje. Términos comunes que cuando nos referimos a navegar El Estrecho de

Gibraltar, siempre cobran un significado especial y diferente. Incrementamos a diario el ya de por si congestionado tráfico en la zona. EL VAPOR CIENTO VEINTE AÑOS BAJO EL MAR Ciento veinte años después de su naufragio los restos del Gladiator se han convertido en uno de los símbolos mas característicos y desconocidos de nuestro pueblo. Tras siete años de investigación, Zahara Magazine publica en exclusiva los datos del enigmático barco. Sobre la una de la tarde del martes 12 de diciembre de 1.893 encalló en la playa de Zahara el vapor británico Gladiator, con matricula de Glasgow, cargado con seiscientas cajas de azúcar. Procedía del puerto de Gibraltar y su destino final era iverpool. El barco había tocado fondo en las proximidades de Tarifa, abriéndose una vía de agua en su interior. A las 6,40 horas de ese mismo día el Comandante de Marina de Cádiz recibió este escueto telegrama procedente de la Ayudantia de Marina de Vejer:

Vapor inglés Gladiator, capitán David Kin, procedencia Gibraltar, destino Liverpool, diez y siete hombres, embarrancó en la tarde de hoy playa Zahara; gente y equipajes salvados. Tocó cabezas Tarifa; detalles correo. Varios días después, concretamente el 16 de diciembre de 1893, el periódico El mparcial, en su edición de adrid, publicaba la siguiente noticia del naufragio: “Acaban de llegar los tripulantes del vapor Gladiator, que como dije ayer, se dirigía desde Gibraltar a Liverpool, con cargamento consistente en 600 cajas de azúcar. Según me ha referido un tripulante, el buque tocó en el bajo las Cabezas frente a Tarifa. A consecuencia del choque se abrió una gran vía de agua. A pesar de esto, continuaron navegando más de 15 millas; pero al ver que el buque empezaba a sumergirse, dispuso el capitán

que se embarrancase en la playa de Zahara, como así se hizo. Enseguida el capitán dispuso lo necesario para que el buque fuese abandonado. Cuando se disponían a cumplir las órdenes del capitán, llegó el ayudante de marina para prestar los auxilios necesarios. Uno de los botes en que iban varios tripulantes fue echado a pique por un golpe de mar. También estuvo en peligro de zozobrar otro bote que acudió en auxilio, como el anterior, y que salvó tres tripulantes. Del buque solo pudo extraerse la documentación y el equipaje. El Gladiator se partió completamente durante la última madrugada. No es posible salvar nada del cargamento, que valía cien mil duros. El buque costó cuarenta mil, fue construido hace treinta años en Inglaterra y estaba asegurado. Los náufragos regresarán inmediatamente a Inglaterra. Varios años después, el jueves 13 de febrero de 1902, también naufragó en Zahara otro vapor, el Gibralfaro, pero esta vez en la playa de Atlanterra. a noticia fue publicada el de febrero de en la revista de navegación y comercio a vida arítima. u tenor literal es el siguiente: “También ha encallado en un banco de arena, el mismo día 13, en las proximidades del arroyo de San Juan, situado al este del poblado de Zahara, el vapor Gibralfaro, de la matricula de Bilbao, al mando del capitán mercante don Matías Carmona. El siniestro tuvo lugar por la fuerza del temporal, salvándose todos los pasajeros, creyéndose que también podrá salvarse el buque.” El Gibralfaro finalmente pudo ser parcialmente salvado, aunque todavía permanecen algunos restos del casco sumergidos bajo la arena de la playa de Atlanterra, pero no así el Gladiator cuyos restos, ciento veinte años después, aun continúan visibles en la playa de Zahara y convertidos en uno de los símbolos mas característicos del pueblo.n

EL VAPOR. ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY YEARS UNDER THE SEA One hundred and twenty years after the SS Gladiator was shipwrecked its remains have become one of the most characteristic and enigmatic symbols of Zahara. After seven years of research, Zahara magazine exclusively tells the story. Around one in the afternoon on tuesday the 12th of December 1893 the SS Gladiator a british steamer registered in Glasgow ran aground on the beach, It had left Gibraltar bound for Liverpool, Its cargo six hundred boxes of sugar. The ship had bottomed near Tarifa causing a leak. At 06.40 the same day the Navy commander of Cadiz received this terse telegram from the navy base in Vejer. Vejer 12 (6,40) –Barba. Vapor inglés Gladiator, capitán David Kin, procedencia Gibraltar, destino Liverpool, diez y siete hombres, embarrancó en la tarde de hoy playa Zahara; gente y equipajes salvados. Some days later on the 16th of December. the newspaper El Imparcial in its Madrid edition reported the shipwreck Acaban de llegar los tripulantes del vapor Gladiator, que como dije ayer, se dirigía desde Gibraltar a Liverpool, con cargamento consistente en 600 cajas de azúcar. Según me ha referido un tripulante, el buque tocó en el bajo las Cabezas frente a Tarifa. A consecuencia del choque se abrió una gran vía de agua. A pesar de esto, continuaron navegando más de 15 millas; pero al ver que el buque empezaba a sumergirse, dispuso el capitán que se embarrancase en la playa de Zahara, como así se hizo. Enseguida el capitán dispuso lo necesario para que el buque fuese abandonado. Cuando se disponían a cumplir las órdenes del capitán, llegó el ayudante de marina para prestar los auxilios necesarios. Uno de los botes en que iban varios tripulantes fue echado a pique por un golpe de mar. También estuvo en peligro de zozobrar otro bote que acudió en auxilio, como el anterior, y que

salvó tres tripulantes. Del buque solo pudo extraerse la documentación y el equipaje. El Gladiator se partió completamente durante la última madrugada. No es posible salvar nada del cargamento, que valía cien mil duros. El buque costó cuarenta mil, fue construido hace treinta años en Inglaterra y estaba asegurado. Los náufragos regresarán inmediatamente a Inglaterra. Con los náufragos ha venido a Cádiz el naviero Sr. Haines, que salió ayer con objeto de ver si podría salvar al Gladiator. “ The press, both national and local such as, Diario de Cadiz, Iberia and military mail Epoch echoed the news. ATLANTERRA CINCUENTA Y UN AÑOS DE HISTORIA. (1962-2013) Incorporada a su paisaje y formando parte de su entorno, Zahara no seria la misma sin esta exclusiva y singular urbanización, caracterizada por su alta calidad arquitectónica y su saludable estilo de vida. En la primavera de 1959 tres inquietos alemanes, Klaus Jamin, de 37 años, del ramo de la hosteleria, Peter Klein, 34 años, reportero rafi o y i i i en a de a o intor y escultor, deciden hacer un viaje turístico a caballo por la costa española. Se trata de un vie o ue o de uventud que or fin han podido hacer realidad. En Barcelona suben a un tren con destino a Málaga. Aquí se apean y compran tres caballos aparejados con el propósito de llegar a la provincia de Cádiz. Les entusiasma tanto el viaje que el de vuelta deciden hacerlo también a caballo, pero esta vez no hasta Málaga, sino hasta Tossa de Mar, en Gerona, donde la familia

de Klaus Jamin tenía un pequeño hotel. La experiencia de este viaje la plasmaron en un libro, escrito por Klaus y Peter, al que titularon Auf Den Spuren Von Don Quijote. A lo largo de este viaje visitan Tarifa, Bolonia y Zahara. Les llama poderosamente la atención la franja costera de la Sierra de la Plata, con sus playas y pequeñas calas, emplazamiento que consideran ideal para una inversión turística, dado el prometedor futuro que en aquellos años empieza a vislumbrarse en España para el sector. Cautivados por la zona, deciden hacer una parada en Zahara, donde jinetes y caballos se instalan por unos días en el bar Casa Juanito. can promotores germanos con el propósito de on e uir o io y finan ia i n ara la construcción de una urbanización exclusiva y de lujo, destinada preferentemente a residentes alemanes. Barajan dos opciones, la Costa Brava o la Costa de la Luz. A partir de aquí se realizan nuevos viajes, también a caballo, aunque ahora desde Jerez. Finalmente Zahara resulta la opción elegida. Los promotores llegan a un principio de acuerdo con los propietarios de los terrenos, a los que se les ofrecen precios que en ocasiones doblan el valor de mercado de aquellos años. l de ar o de e rea la entidad tlanterra iendo o ert o n u ri er re idente y el ut iederi u director técnico. El nombre elegido para la sociedad esta compuesto por la abreviatura de atlántico, atlan, y por la palabra latina terra, tierra, tierra del atlántico. Sin embargo,

el nombre escogido para la denominación de la futura urbanización no seria el de Atlanterra sino el de Cabo de Plata, en clara referencia a la zona geográfica en la que esta habría de ubicarse, ya que los promotores pretendían evitar que el nombre de la inmobiliaria y el de la urbanización se identificasen. No obstante, el paso de de los años se encargaría de conseguir que la denominación de Atlanterra, reservada originariamente para la empresa promotora, acabe imponiéndose y desplazando a la inicial de Cabo de Plata. En estos días comienzan a escriturarse los primeros terrenos, adquiridos de forma sucesiva, primero a Josefa Alvarado, propietaria de la finca El oro, y despu s a la familia Trujillo, propietarios de Agua de Enmedio, y a Francisco Guirola, propietario del Pozo de San Juan. En los meses siguientes comienza la ejecución de las obras. Se empieza por el arreglo de la carretera y por la rehabilitación de las antiguas cuadras de caballos para adaptarlas a oficinas de la promotora y a bar, el bar El Castillo, de Paquito Pacheco, que abrió sus puertas en el verano de . Las primeras obras de urbanización y electrificación ascienden a una inversión inicial de millones de pesetas. osteriormente empiezan a levantarse los primeros chalés,

todos situados a ambos lados de la nueva carretera recién asfaltada, construida sobre la antigua vía pecuaria, y cuya primera fase de ejecución concluyó junto al chalé Grande. El primero de ellos será el chalé La Torre, de arro amin, le siguen asa etra, el chal Grande, Mi siesta y la rehabilitación de los antiguos cortijos de Agua de enmedio, donde laus amin fijó su residencia, y el de la Plata, rehabilitado y abierto al público como hotel en . resentan estas edificaciones iniciales una gran uniformidad morfológica que recuerda a los cuarteles y cortijos de la zona: techos de tejas árabes con cubierta a dos aguas, plantas en forma rectangular o en ele, para resguardo del viento, pavimentos irregulares de loza de Tarifa, barnizadas en el interior y colocadas al corte en el exterior, portalones de duelas de madera en huecos de ventanas, zócalos y torreones de piedra natural, etc. Llama la atención que si bien las primeras obras empiezan en no será hasta cuando se redacte el primer plan urbanístico, el cual será posteriormente modificado en . A mediados de los años sesenta el empresario Kurt Schlichtkrull, cofundador de la compañía, conocido popularmente como Juanaco, llega a la presidencia de la promo-

tora, convirtiéndose en el impulsor y verdadero alma máter de la Atlanterra actual, de la cual llegó a ser accionista mayoritario y presidente hasta su fallecimiento en . Bajo su mandato se aprueban los distintos planes urbanísticos que permitirán el desarrollo ulterior de la urbanización, la cual empieza a ser ya conocida como referente de lujo y calidad. Son años de crecimiento. En 1971 el empresario pone en marcha una nueva entidad, la constructora Atlanterra Inmobiliaria .A, filial de Atlanterra .A., empresa pionera en aplicar criterios de sostenibilidad ambiental y en 1975 promueve la ampliación de la superficie mínima edificable, que se fija en dos mil metros cuadrados de parcela. En se inicia la construcción de dos hoteles de lujo, el lub otel Atlanterra y el Gran otel ahara, promovidos por Alvis ranz otter, empresario y arquitecto alemán de origen checo. Se trata de la inversión turística más importante hasta ese momento en la costa gaditana. Tanto es así que el entonces Ministro de Información y Turismo, Alfredo Sánchez Bella, visita las obras el 18 de febrero de 1973. Mediante Orden Ministerial de de octubre de se aprueba por el Ministerio el Plan de Promoción Turística de abo de lata, con el fin de obtener para

la urbanización la denominación de Centro de nter s urístico Nacional, iniciativa que permitiría a sus promotores disfrutar de ciertos beneficios fiscales y de la posibilidad de recalificar suelo con mayor celeridad. Dos años después, en 1974, la construcción de ambos hoteles quedó paralizada al entrar en quiebra las empresas propietarias de los terrenos, Plata Inmobiliaria S.A. e Ibero Finanz Corporation S.A. El 17 de enero de 1973 se incorpora a la plantilla de Atlanterra un joven arquitecto alemán. e trata de orst an el, cuya labor profesional durante mas de tres décadas contribuirá a desarrollar un estilo arquitectónico propio y característico de la urbanización: el llamado durante muchos años “estilo Atlanterra”. Primero como empleado de la promotora, donde estuvo trabajando casi tres años, y después como profesional libre, es el autor de unos sesenta proyectos en la urbanización. En sus primeros proyectos predomina un estilo andaluz caracterizado por el movimiento de volúmenes, fachadas blancas de inspiración popular con molduras y adornos florales, cubiertas mixtas aterrazadas y de tejas árabes, a dos o tres aguas, patios interiores en los que la azujeleria, las plantas y las fuentes ocupan un lugar preferente. En sus obras posteriores se obser-

van importantes innovaciones funcionales, aunque sin renunciar a detalles decorativos complementarios vinculados a la arquitectura mediterránea o incluso árabe. A partir de finales de los a os setenta destacan también los diseños del arquitecto algecireño Joaquín Cuello que, en sana disputa con orst an el, se repartirán la mayoría de los proyectos realizados en la urbanización. Ambos arquitectos conseguirán copar, casi en régimen de monopolio, la mayoría de las obras hasta bien entrado los años noventa. En los diseños de Cuello el color blanco y la piedra de la zona continúan siendo el eje principal, a los que incorpora elementos propios del estilo ibicenco y griego, como las formas geométricas, los distintos tipos de arcos, las gruesas paredes o los porches de vigas de maderas. En la segunda mitad de la década de los setenta y en la primera de los ochenta llama la atención el lento crecimiento que experimenta la urbanización, sobre todo si se compara con las vecinas de su entorno, como las de Conil, Chiclana o Sotogrande. Las obras ejecutadas apenas superan las dos o tres viviendas anuales. a apertura del lub otel Atlanterra en 1983 contribuirá a relanzar el turismo en la zona, lo que favorecerá en cierta medida el desarrollo posterior de la urbanización.

A partir de 1988 comienza la construcción de los primeros apartamentos. La hasta entonces exclusiva urbanización de singulares y lujosos chalés pasa a ser en estos años una urbanización mixta, en la que junto a las parcelas de viviendas unifamiliares empiezan a surgir nuevos bloques de apartamentos y de viviendas adosadas. Atlanterra Pueblo y Costa Zahara, (1ª fase), serán las primeras de estas urbanizaciones. e seguirán Atlanterra laya , ahía de la lata y ar de lata , Atlanterra osta y Atlanterra ol y ardines de ahara. En el camino se quedó el inacabado Gran otel ahara, de plazas. Estaba llamado a convertirse, en palabras de sus promotores, en el hotel mas lujoso del sur de España. La quiebra, en un primer momento, de las empresas propietarias del establecimiento y, posteriormente, la aprobación por parte de la Demarcación de Costas de un nuevo deslinde que incluía dentro del dominio publico y de sus servidumbres de protección la mayor parte los terrenos del hotel hicieron inviable el proyecto, optándose por su expropiación. El de Enero de ciento setenta y cinco kilogramos de goma-2 redujeron el edificio a escombros en apenas cinco segundos.n

They were strongly attracted to the coastal fringe of the Sierra de la Plata with its beaches and small coves. It was a perfect location for an investment given that, at that time, there was the emergence of a promising future in Spanish property. Captivated by the region, they decided to stop in Zahara where

sociated with the project. Nevertheless, over the years it became called Atlanterra replacing the name Cabo de Plata. At that time they began to legalise the first lots. These were years of growth. n the businessman started a new company, the construction company Atlanterra Estate Agents S.A. It was a pioneering company in applying standards of eco-sustainability.. n building began on two u market hotels lub otel tlanterra and Gran otel ahara.The develo er was German businessman and architect lvis ran otter originally ech . t was the largest investment to date on this art of the adi coast. o much so that on the th ebruary the inister of nformation and Tourism lfredo anche ella visited the site and approved it as an area of National Interest for tourists. It was an initiative that gave the develo ers certain tax benefits and the ossibility to legalise land faster.Two years later in the building of both hotels was halted

by the bankrupcy of the companies owning the land lata mmobilaria and bero inan Corporation SA n the th anuary a oung German architect joined the team in Atlanterra. Over three decades Horst Mankel contributed to and developed Atlanterra’s characteristic architectural style to such a degree that for many years it was known as ‘estilo Atlanterra’ (Atlanterra style). Horst worked for three years as an employee and subsequently, free-lance to design some sixty buildings in the development. His first ro ects are in the ndalucian style characterised by Cul-de-sacs, typical white Spanish facades with ower motifs a mixture of arab tiles and ridged roofs, and interior patios where the lants and owers take ride of lace. n his later designs there is considerable imodernisation although he still kept the mediterranean and arabic style details. rom the end of the seventies the designs of Joaquin Cuello, an architect from Algeciras can also be seen. Joaquin Cuello was in healthy competiton wiith Horst Mankel and both architects dominated the development, until well into the nineties, almost a monopoly. In Cuello’s designs the colour white and natural local stone form the central theme and include elements of Greek and Iberian style such as geometric shapes, style of arches, thick walls or wooden beamed porches. In the late seventies and early eighties it is

interesting to see how slowly the development grew, especially compared to its nearby neighbours Conil, Chiclana or Sotogrande. No more than two or three houses were built each year. The o ening of the lub otel tlanterra in 1983 relaunched tourism in the area, helping the later develo ments to a certain degree.. rom the first ats were built. rom the building of one-family luxury houses, over these years

the building was more mixed as new apartment blocks and semi-detached homes appeared. On 10th Janurary 2002 one hundred and sixty five square kilos of building were destroyed in only five seconds.n

EGIPTO CONNECTION - TIERRA MÍTICA – ZAHARA DE LOS ATLANTES – PURO MITO Olvidamos, por ejemplo, que el Atlántico no es más que el océano que rodeaba la Atlántida, morada de Atlas situada frente a las columnas de Hércules. Eso, al menos, fue lo que dijeron a Solón algunos sacerdotes egipcios en Sais, ciudad del delta del Nilo. Le contaron al gran legislador griego que Egipto se había enfrentado a los atlantes hacía nueve mil años. Belicosos y expansivos, estos habitantes de los confines del Estrecho de Gibraltar habían desarrollado una civilización compleja y sofisticada. Según nos cuenta Platón, “en esta isla Atlántida los reyes habían creado un grande y maravilloso poder, que dominaba en la isla entera, así como sobre otras muchas islas y hasta en muchas partes del continente. Además en nuestros países, más acá del estrecho, ellos eran dueños de la Libia hasta el Egipto, y en la Europa hasta la Tirrenia”. Dice la leyenda que esos atlantes del Estrecho -cuya civilización floreció en torno al 9.000 a.C.- fueron los primeros grandes urbanistas de la historia. Con impresionantes puertos y una gran flota, llevaron su cultura por todo el mediterráneo,

hasta la tierra del Nilo. Y tal vez fueran ellos los misteriosos maestros constructores que enseñaron a los egipcios las técnicas con las que edificaron las pirámides. De hecho, hasta el día de hoy sigue siendo un misterio el origen de tan vastas construcciones. Al igual que sigue siendo un misterio la Atlántida. Si hacemos caso al mito, los dioses participaron tanto en su creación como en su destrucción, enviando un gran cataclismo que la hizo desaparecer bajo las aguas en tan solo un día y una noche. Pero recientemente han aparecido numerosas teorías que hacen que el “mito” de la Atlántida empiece a convertirse en la “historia” de los atlantes. Algunos de estos teóricos sostienen que los nombres de las dinastías atlantes son translaciones al alfabeto griego de significados egipcios. Así, bajo esta idea, el nombre para la pirámide de Keops se puede interpretar como “pirámide de la isla del sol poniente”. Siguiendo, pues, estas carambolas de la historia y las interpretaciones, ¿por qué no decir que Zahara, antes de ser de los Atunes, era de los Atlantes? Que no se nos olvide: Somos puro mito. n

If we pay attention to the myth, the Gods played a part in its construction as well as its destruction creating a huge cataclysm that made the island disappear under the sea in less than a day and night. But recently a number of theories have suggested that the myth of Atlantis slowly changed into the ‘history’ of the Atlanteans. Some of these theories maintain that the names of Atlantean dynasties are translations to the Greek alphabet from Egyptian hieroglyphs. Que Australia, Madrid, Asia y el Soho londinense eran una buena suma que daba 21. Y frente a la muralla de Zahara, en una casa de toda la vida, hicieron del pequeno patio un lugar exclusivo y vanguardista, con una carta reducida y dinámica que cambia cada día 21.
