Imagine a city as a living book, each building a page in its unfolding story. Over time, new structure rise, layering over the old, reflecting changing cultures, technologies and societies. these layers preserve the past while adapting to the present, creating a dynamic narrative of urban life. Tearing down old buildings erases parts of this story, but preserving them keeps the city’s history alive, reminding us of where it began. The meaning of a city evolves as new chapters are added, with each layer telling a part of the tale

01Institute For Contaminant Remediation

The post-industrial site in Jarrow, Northeast England, once a hub of industrial activity, has undergone multiple transformations over the years, from a wooden shipyard in the 1830s to a chemical works facility in the 20th century.

Today, the site is a testament to the complex interplay between industrialisation and environmental degradation.

Through research, it has been revealed that industrial sites across Northeast England, including those in North and South Shields, Wallsend, Hebburn, and Jarrow, have contributed significantly to the pollution of the River Tyne.

Sewage overflows and untreated stormwater further exacerbate water contamination, posing a pressing environmental concern.

During the 1830s, the plot of land where the Jarrow yard stood was formerly utilized for constructing wooden sailing vessels.

In 1851 Charles Mark Palmer along with his brother George established a shipyard at Jarrow, laying the foundation for what would become Palmers of Jarrow.

In 1960, the shipyard was acquired by Rohm & Haas Ltd. for chemical works for the production of paint. The facility was shut down in 2015 after 55 years of work and currently going through remediation works.

Mapping the historical built-up areas of the sites from 1860, 1920, and 1970 has informed the creation of a Palimpsest, embracing the memory of the place and its historical significance to the people that have lived or worked there creating a sense of nostalgia of these old remenants.

These three maps were layered on to the map of 1950, which was when the whole of the Palmer shipyard was demolished, and the surrounding context was studied, how it had

The maps of the Shipyard of the three years have been extracted to make a block model representing the structures that might have been erected at that time. The block models have then been merged to create Palimpsest, representing the layout and the memory of the place throughout the years.

The key facilities from the Palimpsest model have been identified and then extracted. The model has been distorted variously so as to create a form derived from the Palimpsest model.

The Institute for Contaminant Remediation addresses the environmental legacy of industrial activities in Jarrow, Northeast England, and other industrial hubs along the River Tyne.

By invoking palimpsest as a method for architectural design we can blend historical reverence with modern technological innovation.

The merged form evolves into a new architectural piece while implementing a spatial program through design development.

This speculative design is used to create a central hub connected to various remediation facilities via Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs).

Concept Model 1

WATER PURIFICATION PANELS

The Institute for Contaminant Remediation integrates algae filtration technology with a rotating structure inspired by the Falkirk Wheel. This system continuously cleans polluted river water while converting algae waste into sustainable construction materials.

The design features a rotating mechanism that lowers algae-loaded filtration panels into the river because of their ability to absorb heavy metals, organic pollutants, and excess nutrients.. These panels absorb pollutants and are rotated out once saturated, allowing fresh panels to take their place. This continuous process ensures efficient water purification. After filtration, the algae-laden panels are processed into bio-composite materials for use in construction.

The Institute for Contaminant Remediation includes a facility for deploying Autonomous Surface Vessels (USVs) to various locations along the river. These USVs are equipped with advanced sensors and filtration systems, enabling them to monitor water quality, collect data, and perform localized water purification.

The data collected by the USVs is transmitted back to the central facility for analysis, allowing for realtime monitoring and adaptive management of the river’s health.

In addition to monitoring and purification, the USVs can transport materials and resources to remote or hard-to-reach facilities along the river, ensuring consistent support for the broader network of remediation efforts. This capability enhances the Institute’s overall effectiveness, enabling a comprehensive approach to river management and contamination control.

02DISTRICT - ONE (MOHAMMED BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM CITY)

District One in Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City, Dubai, UAE, offers upscale living amidst meticulously landscaped surroundings. With parks, water bodies, and lush greenery, residents enjoy a serene environment. The development boasts top-notch amenities like cycling tracks, sports facilities, schools, and healthcare centers. Plot sizes vary to suit different preferences, from townhouses to luxurious villas. Developed by reputable real estate firms, District One ensures high-quality infrastructure and construction standards. Its strategic location provides easy access to landmarks and transportation networks.

The current phase of District One Development included villa adjacent to the Meyon One Mall which was underconstruction. The Client owned 34 plots of the 67 plots that were issued to be developed in this phase. 18 of the plot were on the riverfront which were meant to be luxurious villas and the rest 18 of the plots were on the side facing the Mall.

The plots had a generous F.A.R. of 0.80 of plot area which was considerable larger than most allowed by the Dubai Municipality, which was the development authority in the region. A maximum of 5 bedroom were allowed in each villa excluding the Maid’s room. A minimum of 2 parking space had to be provided, and not exceeding 3. The plinth in District One was fixed at 0.60 metre. The building height was restricted at 14.0 mteres so as to not disrupt the skyline of the area which was surrounded by Villas and the underconstruction Mall. Setback’s were set at 3.0 metres on each side.

The client had requested a minimalist design which stood out from the surrounding villa designs. Travertine was cladded on the front and rear walls which was allowed to be 30% of the elevation area, so that it stood out from the beige colour of the rest of the villa, which was a mandatory requirement of the authority.
