SOCIAL VENTURE Startup Boot Camp MAY 11-13, 2018


PROGRAM AGENDA The agenda of the program was built from the experience of the official ‘Start-up Weekend’ organized by Google for Entrepreneurs and Techstars (an accelerator in the U.S.). The Social Ventures Start-up Boot Camp emphasizes the need for empathy and community, networking and mentorship, and hands-on learning. You will work in teams throughout the weekend to develop your venture idea / plan and take it to the next level.

DETAILED AGENDA DAY ONE SESSION

TIME

OBJECTIVE

Opening

5:00PM – 6:30PM

Welcoming remarks, introduction to the SDGs, Hanyang’s Social Innovation Center and Social Ventures program, and ice-breakers.

Team Together

6:30PM – 7:30PM

Team members get to know each other and design their team identity for the weekend, including making their logo, team slogan, and a flag.

Dinner & Night activity

7:30PM – 10:00PM

Welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant together, followed by night walking tour and hang out at the park (whether permitting). Please be prepared to pay for possible entrance fees and drinks.

DAY TWO SESSION

TIME

OBJECTIVE

The Ultimate Design Challenge

10:00AM – 12:00PM

Teams will complete various modules for designing their social venture by racing through different ‘stations’. Stations will be set-up according to Design Thinking: empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test.

Mentoring Sessions

1:00PM – 4:00PM

Teams will get to meet 3-4 experts for 30 minute ‘mentoring’ sessions. These mentors will give feedback mostly on the business aspect of the social venture, focusing on helping students to understand how business actually works.

Work time

4:00PM – 5:30PM & 8:00PM – 10:00PM

Teams can work on their social venture independently. You are welcome to use this time however you like – you can go outside and have a picnic meeting if you want!

Community Circle

5:30PM – 7:00PM

Delegates are gathered to share about their personal stories, and how their values relate to their social venture. It is an opportunity for delegates to feel part of a community that can support each other.


DETAILED AGENDA DAY THREE SESSION

Mindfulness

9:30AM – 10:00AM

Start the day with mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is ‘a mental state achieved by focusing on one’s awareness on the present moment, without judgement’. We will start with meditation.

Workshop: Experimentation

10:00AM – 11:00AM

Delegates learn how to set up experiments for their social venture including developing a hypothesis, research and testing, and review.

Workshop: Pitching

11:00PM – 12:00PM

Delegates learn how to deliver an effective pitch and have an opportunity to practice with one another.

Workshop: Teamprepreneurship

1:00PM – 2:00PM

Delegates learn tools and practices for effective team management and teamwork – the key competence for success.

Workshop: Finance

2:00PM – 3:00PM

Delegates learn the basics of managing financing statements, especially at the early stages of the venture when past data is lacking and future projections are weak.

Work time

All day

As teams are in different stages of development, we give teams the flexibility to manage their work time and attending workshops. Team presentations for the pitch should be submitted to organizers by 4:15PM.

Pitch

4:30 – 6:00PM

Teams will pitch their social ventures to a panel of judges. Pitches will be 7 minutes in length with 3 minutes for feedback and Q&A from the judges. * Please see judging criteria

Closing Ceremony

6:30PM – 7:30PM

Celebrate the end of the boot camp! Winners of the pitch competition will be announced, certificates awarded and lots of pictures taken!

YOUR PROGRAM FACILITATORS EUN BI OH Eun Bi is currently a freelancer working primarily on big data projects. She previously worked at Ashoka Korea, KFPP, Westgate, and KAIST. She’s a tech enthusiast but disconnects to appreciate art and yoga. She wants to inspire young people to build careers that matter to them. Eun Bi has organized several work and play events for young people. Last month, she organized Startup Weekend initiated by Google for Entrepreneurs.

ZAHIN HUSSAIN Zahin is the program manager at the Social Innovation Center. In the past five years, she’s lived in five countries - including her home in Canada, India, Vietnam, Philippines and now South Korea. She wants to disrupt the education sector to focus on what really matters – learning. She’s worked across various sectors, and believes that empathy is the key to addressing the world’s most pressing problems.

JIEUN LEE (organizer) Jieun is a recent graduate of Hanyang University, joining the Social Innovation Center in April. She was in your shoes just six months ago aspiring to develop a social venture in Nepal (She for Her) team. Jieun hopes to build her career in the social sector, especially with her passion in women’s empowerment. She enjoys good music, coffee and movies on her free time.


THE MENTORS MARTA ALLINA - Executive Director - CMO, fresh GmbH Combining experience in high tech and telecommunications, knowledge in Korean and corporate cultures and the enthusiasm of a forever-young entrepreneur. • Experience: food industry, cosmetics, tech, telecommunications industry, media, digital marketing, event management, writing, start-ups • Advise: market research, branding, marketing, lean startup methods, business development, pitching, networking, tech management, crosscultural business STEVEN CHO - Co-founder & CEO, Momentus Inc. Creating a culture of positivity with ‘Just Thank You’ (app). When Steven was doing his undergrad in New York, he got together with classmates to develop a mobile game that made it in the top 100 apps in Korea and the U.S. Inspiring social entrepreneurs to dream bigger. • Experience: engineering, tech management, gaming, web and app development, hardware, supply chain, process management, merchandising • Advise: product development, technical development like managing developers, business overview, analytics, leadership development JAEIN JUNG - Co-founder, En.Companion Inspiring the next generation of Changemakers to simply get started. While Jaein started his career in healthcare, he now works on projects across industries and countries. He’s learned that starting small and concentrating on creating value for stakeholders is key to making an impact. • Experience: healthcare, trading, international development, education, design thinking, content production, government projects • Advise: Working with government and corporate funding partners, global business, trading, education, entrepreneurial skills, content development SUE CHOI - Assistant Manager, KBAA (Business Angels), and former CEO of The Bloom & Erunboram Enabling better investments for high potential entrepreneurs. Combining experiences in law, HR, retail, consulting, tech and entrepreneurship. She dreams big but keeps a practical plan. • Experience: law, HR, retail, trading, tech incubation, consulting, merchandising, tech management, start-up management (working with 400 startups) • Advise: business strategy, market expansion strategy, B2B marketing and sales, talent management, fundraising, managing investors

HOW WERE TEAMS FORMED? The teams were formed based on the idea, the backgrounds and interests of the members, and the availability of each member throughout the weekend (two people should be present in the boot camp at all times). Some team members may know each other and have experience, while others are brand new to the concept of social innovation and entrepreneurship. We believe that this is an opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, of different ages and experiences. So take it easy. Get to know each other. Enjoy the journey through the weekend.


ABOUT THE TEAMS TEAM 1: LOVE (Philippines)

TEAM 5: JUICE UP (Philippines)

LoVE is an incubator that supporting agrienterprises that enable those living in poverty to raise themselves, their families and communities. LoVE is working in partnership with HYU to replicate the model in Ivory Coast.

OH GK is a natural drink product. The team is an incubatee of LoVE, and operating out of the first village university in the world – GK Enchanted Farm. They are focusing on expanding the business, and expanding to Ivory Coast.

Patient First is a AI powered platform providing hospital search and booking system, medical examination and telemedicine service to address healthcare.

TEAM 4: KIDNEY EXCHANGE NETWORK (Sri Lanka)

Juice Up wants to reduce post harvest waste by producing nutritious beverages from unused, excess or underqualified fruits and vegetables. They are defining their product.

Phinix transforms textile waste into higher value products such as footwear and accessories. The team wants to scale up operations with designs and delivery to higher end markets.

TEAM 8: ZUHA DIGITAL (South Africa)

TEAM 9: ONGI LETTER (South Korea)

Zuha Digital seeks to bridge the digital divide in sub-Saharan Africa. They are now ideating and prototyping services such as coding schools.

Ongi (warm) letter is supported by dozens of volunteers to write handwritten letters to people who write to them, sharing about their life stories. They want to make the initiative sustainable.

The Kidney Exchange Network Sri Lanka (KENS) seeks to address organ availability and transplant by assisting patients to find matching donors through a paired kidney exchange.

TEAM 7: SHE FOR HER (Nepal) She for Her started as a project aimed at making sanitary pads for accessible for women and girls through local production. They are now considering an education based model, keeping their impact at the center.

PITCH JUDGING CRITERIA Please note that the judging criteria for the pitch competition during the boot camp is separate from the seed funding criteria. The pitching competition is a fun way for teams to practice with a small prize money. The evaluation for the seed funding will be conducted independently by the LINC Foundation (Guidelines available in Korean: https://bit.ly/2HmB6VG)

EMPATHY • Does team demonstrate the ability to step into other people’s shoes and see things from their perspective? • Do they show problem solving ability to face different personality types, cultures, and opinions? • Do they demonstrate a clear social and / or environmental impact?

CUSTOMER VALIDATION • Have they gone out and validated the solution with potential customers (survey, interviews, etc.)? • The problem or need is real, customer has significant pain or large unfulfilled needs • Solution is better, Faster, Cheaper, Simple vs. Complete, Quality, Efficient, Convenient, Focused from other solutions

EXECUTION & DESIGN

BUSINESS MODEL

• A new and novel solution for the market? Were they able to demo something functional? • Have they established a minimum viable product (MVP) for the weekend? • Did they build the minimum set of features needed to start collecting data? Does it deliver a compelling and captivating user experience?

• How does the team plan on making this a successful business? • Have they thought about competition, how to scale, acquiring customers, their revenue model etc.? • How will they acquire their first 100 customers? How will they acquire suppliers?


ABOUT THE VENUE The boot camp will be held in the HIT Building (#701). On Friday and Saturday, it will be on the 4th floor in Rm 416. On Sunday on the ground floor in the Start-up Lounge.
