LOOKING THROUGH YOU A PORTRAYAL OF MARGINALIZED PEOPLE IN SOCIETY

17-23 MAY 2020

Marginalized communities, socially excluded groups of people for different reasons, such as age, physical or mental disabilities, economic status, access to education, or live in isolated places or depressed areas. This exhibition calls for understanding of marginalized people. Understanding marginalized communities is essential to breaking down barriers in between people. Building equity for all is one of the main things we need to discuss in our society.

ARTISTS BIOGRAPHY

“Look at them, don’t try to sanitise them” Thilde Jensen was born in Denmark and moved to New York City in 1997. Six years later her life and career as a documentary and editorial photographer was cut short by a sudden development of severe Environmental Illness. The struggle to survive took Jensen into a hyper-sensitive world she never knew existed, to capture the harsh realities of those afflicted like her.

John Conn

“We all see the homeless–more or less–although we often do our best to look elsewhere”

From 1968-1971, I was trained as a photographer in the US Marine Corps. Starting in 1970, John traveled to South Africa capturing images of the people and social divide of Aparteid. His iconic Subway series shot between the mid 1970’s and 1982 in New York City is part of the permanent collection of The New York Historical Society and Hoboken Historical Museum.
