A warm Welcome! This is the second issue of our fully digital and ad-free food & lifestyle magazine with ECO friendly living & recycling as a motto... Zakka is Japanese and can be best explained as an expression for ”many things”. It is a fashion and design phenomenon that has spread from Japan throughout Asia and the term refers to everything that improves your home, life and appearance. Inspired by the utensils from the West, often regarded as kitsch in their home countries and with a keen interest in Nordic and Scandinavian design, old or new, we want with this magazine make ”Zakka” into a familiar expression, in our northern part of the world as well. Zakka can also be described as the ”art to see the practical and usable in the ordinary and mundane.” So, welcome to the first Scandinavian Zakka inspired magazine. Happy reading! / Zakka - sweet design of Scandinavia Sida 3

VINTAGE STYLE Things you need • A notepad • Old cardboard • A pair of scissors • Matching Japanese washi tape • Double-sided tape or paper glue • Sweet stamp designs • Letter Stamps • Stamp pad in matching colours • Waterproof pens in assorted colours
Things to do: Take your notepad and use the back as the front of your recipe collection. Place the notepad on a larger piece of cardboard and mark out two pieces, one for the front and one for the back and cut the pieces out. Glue the cardboard bits to the front and the back of the notepad with double sided tape. Peel off a little bit of the surface of the cardboard to get a bit more worn look, and dab a little bit of brown ink along the edges for an extra vintage touch. Paste a few strips of washi tape along the front waistband and then decorate your cover with text, stamps and beautiful papers for a custom look. For manageable register, we put bits of washi tape on some of the notepad pages at regular intervals, to write food categories on using a white rollerball pen.

Di nner SP I NN E R
This is a fun way to choose what to cook for dinner. One tip is to combine this dinner spinner with the previous page’s tip on scrapbook recipe collection. So, gather your friends and start spinning... Things you need • An Old Globe • Spray Paint or blackboard paint • A box • Masking Tape • Japanese washi tape • Blackboard crayons
Things to do Wash the globe thoroughly with detergent. Mask off any parts of your globe that you do not want to paint with color. We have chosen to paint our globe in dark gray and the other parts in retro green and pink. Make sure you are outdoors when you spray paint or maybe in a garage. Shake the spray paint well, and I mean well, when you think you are done shaking shake a little more, this avoids lumps in the paint and gives an even result. Put the part in a box and start spraying in selected colors or paint with blackboard pain. Let dry in a dry and warm place for 1 day. Finish the globe by attaching the washi tape as lines on the globe to get the split in food areas. Write your food categories blackboard crayons and you can now start spinning! Sida 13

It has become immensely popular with ordinary clay pots in our homes, but we want it to be obvious that the pot has been around for a while. The “uglier” the better. It is not always easy to get hold of nice weathered pots at a cheap price so here is a tip for simple patina you can make yourself. Things you need: • Clay pots • Plaster • Water • Soil or moss mixed soil • Sandpaper • Rubber gloves or gardening gloves
Things to do: Mix the plaster with a little water; it must not become too loose. Smear the pot with the mix and if you want a dirtier look and coarser structure, you can dab on the moss-mixed soil here and there. Set out to dry. When dry, sand the surface of the pot with sandpaper to get the desired results. Either you just get a glimpse of the red clay surface or there are only a few white streaks. If you think the pot feels too white, you can rub it afterwards with earth or moss mixed soil. Good luck! Sida 15
Refreshing clay fruits
Â
Of polymer clay you can do all sorts of funny characters. On a hot summer day it is nice to tempt the palate with some fresh sunwarmed strawberries or why not get your teeth into a crispy piece of watermelon. Here are some ideas inspired by summer’s lazy days and tempting fruits.
Sida 16
THINGS YOU NEED:
WET WIPES!
The clay is so smooth and lovely to work with; the only slightly negative is when to use light and dark shades on the same figure. To avoid having to run and wash your hands all the time, we have a great tip, wet wipes! It easily wipes off the colour on your hands and you can have them right next to you.
* Various colours of Polymer clay * A cutting board * A small knife * A small rolling pin * Toothpicks * Sculpting tool * Wet wipes * Various fastening details such as magnets, key ring with a chain, brooch etcetera. * Super glue
Sida 17
THINGS TO DO:
Crispy Watermelon Slice
Take a piece of the red clay and roll a cone-shaped figure. Give it a rounded shape at the bottom, where the peel will be stuck on. Press and shape with your fingers so the flesh gets angular and pointy at the opposite end. Take a white piece and roll at the same size of the bottom edge of the flesh, it should be fairly thin. Place it on the rounded part of the flesh. Then you make a similar green piece, slightly thicker than the white one. Stick it onto the white piece. The eyes are made in white. Roll two small balls and shape them like teardrops, flatten them and stick them onto the fruit. Make the nose in the same red colour as the flesh of the fruit, roll it into a small ball and place it underneath the eyes. We made the pupils and seeds in black. The pupils are rolled into a tiny ball, then flattened and attached to the whites of the eyes. The melon seeds are made after the same principles as the eye whites. Create the mouth using an appropriate tool and make a small dimple in each corner of the mouth with a toothpick. That’s it!
Delicious raspberry
We started by making a large ball as our base, then we attached small balls all over the bid one. To make the green receptacle, which is fastened on top of raspberry, we rolled out a circular plate and then cut out the leaf shape using a sharp knife. Finnish the raspberry by making a small green stalk.
Let your fruit and berry imagination run wild!
Then choose what you want to do with your clay figures. There are plenty of alternatives: refrigerator magnets, brooches, hair clips and jewellery such as rings, necklaces, and earrings. Or you can just place the characters on the edge of your flowerpots. If you want to make key rings, do not forget to secure the ring in place before burning. Place your finished shapes on a baking tray and slid into the oven! You find instructions on how to burn the clay on the polymer clay package.Â

Shake it!!!
Things you need: • Spray paint in desired colour • Masking tape • Plastic / cardboard / paper for the larger mask • Large piece of cardboard for surface protection • Large piece of cardboard for drying surface • Hook or nail on the wall / ceiling to hang painted details for drying • Lamps Metal (IKEA pendant lamp “FOTO”)
Things to do: We have mixed both old and newly purchased bulbs in metal. First screw off the top part including the cord from the lampshade. If you have an old lamp you want to paint, it is an advantage if you wipe it thoroughly before you put the paint on. If the lamp hangs in the kitchen it is probably covered with a thin layer of fat, use detergent and let it dry. Mask everything that do not need painting, do not forget the cord! Put the piece of cardboard, to protect the base, on the floor. Hold each piece over the cardboard and spray it with a sweeping motion, rotate the piece while spraying so that everything gets covered. Do not spray too much to avoid sagging. The colour we chose dried very quickly, but still we left the parts to dry for a day. Make sure the surface that you put flat against the cardboard is a bit dry before. The cord with accessories we hung out to dry on a nail. For each colour you use, empty the bottle by holding it upside down and spray until no more colour comes out. Store the bottle up side down until next time you use it. This is so that the paint does not dry up if it takes a long time between spray sessions. If you have them standing up the paint will dry on the bottom of the bottle, the tube gets blocked and the bottle is consumed. Good luck now! Text Julia O. Stenfelt

Adding details...
Sida 32
Things to do For larger designs, such as the ice cream and cone, take a large wad of wool and compress it into a ball as hard as you can. Felt the ball so that it becomes more solid and get the desired shape. The more times you insert the needle in one place the tighter the wool becomes and the figure comes together more. If you chose undyed wool and want to paint it, take a wad of coloured wool and place it onto the figure. Felt it and add more wads until you have an overall surface of the colour you are happy with. For the smaller figures you take smaller pieces of wad. Place all of the pieces on the pad and start felting. Fold in the wool from the edges and inwards with the needle. The needle should move in the same direction or it may break. Pick up the wool with the top of the needle and press down repeatedly until you get the desired shape. It is an advantage if you do it at a fast pace. The more times you stick the needle in the same place, the firmer the figure becomes. When you want to tangle the details you only felt for longer in that particular place. If you, for example, want to form a dimple you moult a bit with your finger back and forth on the same spot and repeat the felting. The more you felt at the same place, the harder and firmer the wool becomes. The downside of the figure that is placed on your pad becomes fuzzy during felting. Therefore it is good to turn the wool from time to time. To get rid of the fuzziness you take the needle parallel to the wool and re-insert it superficially. That way you get an even felted result. When you want to join two parts, simply felt the one part onto the other. You must felt all around to make them sticks well to each other. Make the finishing touches to make the figure smooth. When the figure is complete, you can cut off the last straggling pieces wool that you did not manage to tangle up. If you want to make a brooch out of your character you sew it to a brooch or attach a safety pin behind the figure.
Strawberry ice cream cone
We made the ice cream round shaped in pink and the cone in dark beige. When they are completed felt the ice cream on top of the cone. Then take a strip of wool in the colour of the ice cream, and put it in the crack between the ice cream and the cone and felt to fix them together. You may felt a bit down onto the cone as well to get the feeling that the ice cream has started to melt a little. Finally, take a few wads of light beige wool and felts them into small sticks. Attach them to the cone so that they form the grid on the cone surface. Cut off the last straggling pieces of wool unless you managed to tangle it all up.
Icy green Popsicle
Felt together a u-shaped figure in green wool. When you have managed to get it into a fine shaped Popsicle, you rub a little back and forth with your little finger to make two vertical stripes on each side of the Popsicle. Felt, rub, felt - repeat until you have fine elongated dimples. Felt on some dark green wool on to the two vertical dimples. Cut off the last straggling wool unless you managed to tangle up it all. Finally, attach the Popsicle stick by carefully cut a little hole with the scissors at the bottom of the ice cream. Put some glue into the cut and then the lolly-stick. Leave it to dry.

Tea time!
As long as the sun makes an appearance up here in the north the craving for something sweet, is greater than ever. A little coffee break at least a couple times a day is a must for an inveterate northerner. An early brunch or a relaxing afternoon tea works also very well in our calendar, maybe in the harbor, or just around the table in someones sweet kitchen...? Here we present a menu of wonderful freshly baked scones, which we top with clotted cream, berries and other treats. On the beverage side, we have replaced the classic tea with a chai latte and a healthy raspberry smoothie. Enjoy!

(Serves 4)
A classic recipe for delicious English scones. Served straight from the oven so the butter or clotted cream can really melt in with the bread when you spread it! Perfect for our homemade lemon curd or with some sliced strawberries and orange philly. Things you need: 100g butter, unsalted 8 dl flour 1 dl rolled oats 5 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 4 dl milk or yoghurt 1 tbsp unrefined sugar 1 tsp vanilla sugar
Orange Philly With Strawberries
(4-6 servings)
Things you need: 200 g of cream cheese 0,5 dl honey Zest of one orange For serving 0.5 liters of sliced strawberries
Things to do: Take the butter out and let it come to room warm temperature. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celcius. Mix all ingredients into a sticky dough, but be careful not to stir too much! Spoon out eight large mounds on a greased baking sheet and flatten them slightly with floured hands. Bake in the center of oven for about fifteen minutes. Serve immediately.
Things to do: Mix together the cream cheese, honey and orange peel and pour the mix into a pretty serving bowl. Serve it with the sliced strawberries on freshly baked scones. Could it be any easier?
Nutty Raspberry & Chocolate Smoothie
The ultimate mark on a hot freshly baked scones.
(2 glasses)
A mouth watering dessert smoothie with a heavenly touch of nuts and chocolate spread on top. Things you need: 2 dl plain yogurt 2-3 tbsp honey 1-2 tsp vanilla 1 tbsp milk 2 dl frozen raspberries 30 g dark chocolate (60-70%) 0.5 dl nuts, such as pistacios, hazelnuts or almonds Things to do: Chop the nuts and chocolate into smaller pieces and pour them into a blender, blend for a few seconds. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens (at about 65-70 degrees Celcius). It takes about ten minutes. Remove the mix from heat, whisk down the butter and stir until it is completely melted. Pour the lemon curd into a well-cleaned glass jar, put it in the refrigerator or freezer for a couple of weeks (in the later case use smaller jars and let them thawe slowly in the refrigerator when it is time to eat).
Clotted cream
A lovely frothed Chai Latte! (yields about 1 dl)
Clotted cream is available in England and is a thicker cream. Making Clotted cream itself requires a dayahead but is really worth the trouble and delicious on scones. Things you need: 5 dl heavy cream Things to do: Pour cream into a bowl and place it in a pan of simmering water. Let it simmer for one and a half hour uncovered. Do not touch the cream and let it boil. Remove the bowl and let stand in the refrigerator for at least twelve hours. Take up the thick creamy surface with a spoon and stir it until it is smooth and even. Serve it together with jam for scones.
Chai Latte
Orange Philly
(1 glass)
What is a teaparty without tea. For those of you who are big latte lovers a Chai Latte is clearly the ultimate option for the coffee beverage. Mason bee is a common name for species of bees in the genus Osmia, of the family Megachilida e. It is named after its habit of making compartments of mud in its wooden block nests. It does not dril l holes and destroy wooden items like other bees, it uses holes that are already available. They lay thei r eggs one at a time with a supply of pollen or nectar and a plug of mud between them. Mason bees like to be off the ground, so fix their house to a tree or post. They prefer direct sunlight too, unlike bumblebees. When you attach your bee house, make sure to point the entrance downwards so that rain does not get in.

Bee House Instructions With drill bits of various sizes (*8 mm works best for Mason bees) simply take some scrap lumber (DO NOT use treated wood) and drill holes *75 to 125 mm deep, but not all the way through the wood block. For example, get a *100 by 100 mm piece of wood and drill holes that are *85 mm deep. You can cover the holes with chicken wire to help keep birds away from the bee house. Securely place the bee house on the south side of buildings, fence posts, or trees. DO NOT move bee houses after they are in place until at least November. * 1 inch = 25 mm

Mini Cherry Pies (makes 8-10 pieces)
Easy Cherry Pie Filling
500 g pitted cherries (fresh, frozen or canned) 2 dl unrefined sugar 2 tsp of vanilla sugar 1 dl cornstarch 2 tbsp of lemon juice
Flaky Pie Crust
8 dl of flour 3-4 tablespoons of unrefined sugar 1/2 teaspoon of salt 150 g of butter (chilled and sliced) 50 g of Coconut Oil (chilled) 4-5 tablespoons of Ice Water Muffin liners Muffin pan 1 lemon 1 egg, organic and free range 1 tbsp of water
To make the filling:
Place cherries, sugar, cornstarch and lemon juice in a heavy-bottomed medium-sized pan. Heat on medium until the cherries begin to release their liquid. Bring it to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to a simmer until the cherry mixture has thickened. Allow it to cool.
To do the pie crust:
Mix the dry ingredients into a medium size bowl and add chilled butter and coconut oil. Blend the mix with a pastry blender or fork until it is crumbly. Stir down icecold water and knead a few times. Mold the dough into a disc, wrap it in cling foil and place it in the refrigerator for fifteen minutes or more. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut out circles. Place the circles in the muffin liners placed in a muffin pan and prick the bottoms with a fork.

Save some extra dough to roll out if necessary and cut crusts for the top. Add two tablespoons of filling to each crust. Grate a little lemon zest over the filling and top with decorative shapes cut out of the pie crust. Whisk the egg and water in a small bowl and lightly brush each crust with the mixture. Bake the pies for about 30 minutes. Tent the pan loosely with aluminum foil if the crusts are browning too quickly. Serve with a large scoop of creamy organic vanilla ice cream and som fresh berries.

Delicate Pompoms
- Beautiful as decoration for the party, to hang on the porch or in a window.
Sida 64
Things you need: • 7 sheets of tissue paper to measure 38x25 cm (you can of course make it in other sizes) • About 10 cm of thin wire • Fish line or a ribbon to hang up your pompom • A pair of scissors
Things to do: 1. Place your tissue papers on top of each other. Fold in the short side of your tissue paper about 2 centimetres. 2. Turn your papers over and fold in 2 centimetres again. 3. Repeat the procedure until you have folded the sheets all the way, like an accordion. 4. Tie your pompom together in the middle with wire. Make an eye at each end so you can attach the ribbon or fishing line to the suspension. 5. Cut a semicircle at both ends of the folded tissue paper. 6. Separate your layers of tissue paper, one at a time. Fold half of the layers upwards and half downwards, to create a nice ball shape. Now you are ready to hang your beautiful creations in a well-chosen spot.

Painting Cupcakes on a canvas...
Print&Cut canvas designs
Things to do:
The idea of this Print&Cut design is to be transferred to a canvas so that you easily can paint your own kawaii inspired cupcake painting. This could be hung in the kitchen, or made as a gift to someone with a sweet tooth. Of course there are a many other ways to make use of these designs. So go ahead and get creative!
Print the motifs in desired size to be transferred to your canvas by selecting the percentages in the print menu for your printer. Paint the back of the paper with a soft pencil and then trace the design on your canvas. Fill in the contours with a hard pencil a little extra after the tracing. Now it is time to paint. We used a regular hobby acrylic paint. You will get the old vintage feeling by mixing black and brown, diluting it with water and transfer by using a paper or a sponge that you dipped slightly in the diluted colour. Start carefully and fill in with thicker paint in the corners for a nice finish.
Things you need: Canvas Soft pencil Hard pencil Brushes Acrylic Colour and possibly sponges

This is the second issue of our fully digital and ad-free food & lifestyle magazine with ECO friendly living & recycling as a motto...
What is ZAKKA? “Zakka” is Japanese and can be best explained as an expression for ”many things”. It is a fashion and design phenomenon that has spread from Japan throughout Asia and the term refers to everything and nothing that improves your home, life and appearance.
