CHARLES DARWIN

Charles Darwin NATURAL SELECTION Populations of organisms that are born with traits that allow them to survive and thrive in their environment will breed and pass their traits on to the next generation. Populations born without adaptive traits will not breed so often and leave less offspring.

LINNEAUS (Carl Linneaus)

LINNEAUS

Often called the Father of Taxonomy. His system for naming, ranking, and classifying organisms is still in wide use today (with many changes). His ideas on classification have influenced generations of biologists during and after his own lifetime.

GREGOR MENDEL

GREGOR MENDEL An Austrian monk who, working with garden peas, discovered what we now know as the laws of inheritance. He is called the “father of genetics.”

WATSON and CRICK

WATSON and CRICK James Watson and Francis Crick were the co-discoverers of the structure (and therefore, the function) of DNA. They based their model on the research of several other scientists, and won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work.

ROSALIND FRANKLIN

ROSALIND FRANKLIN

Rosalind Franklin was a biophysicist who made critical contributions to the understanding of the fine molecular structure of DNA, RNA, viruses and other things. Her work was a key piece in helping Watson and Crick form their theory of the structure of DNA. Photo 51-->

LYN MARGULIS

LYN MARGULIS SERIAL ENDOSYMBIOTIC THEORY

Margulis is best known for her theory about how eukaryotic cells (cells with nuclei) evolved. She believed that they are the result of an ancient symbiosis among bacteria, so that mitochondria and chloroplasts are the descendants of what were once free-living cells.
