WHAT IS A ROCK ? hard solids of natural origin made of minerals 3 major types
3 MAJOR TYPES OF ROCKS IGNEOUS METAMORPHIC SEDIMENTARY
IGNEOUS ROCK extrusive
intrusive
Derived from the Latin word meaning fire From cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Divided into two main categories: plutonic rock and volcanic rock Plutonic or intrusive rocks result when magma cools and crystallizes slowly within the Earth's crust. (granite) Volcanic or extrusive rocks result from surface lava. (pumice or basalt) Over 700 types of igneous rocks have been described, most of them having formed beneath the surface of Earth's crust.

METAMORPHIC ROCK Arise from the transformation of existing rocks Original rock (protolith) is subjected to heat and pressure. The protolith may be sedimentary rock, igneous rock or another older metamorphic rock. Classified by texture and by chemicals and minerals assemblage.
SEDIMENTARY ROCK Formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. Mineral and/or organic particles (detritus) to settle and accumulate Particles that form a sedimentary rock by accumulating are called sediment Sediment was formed by weathering and erosion in a source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, ice, mass movement or glaciers
the ROCK CYCLE
a basic concept in geology that describes the dynamic transitions through geologic time among the three main rock types: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.

WHAT IS SAND? Sand means different things to different people. A genteral, non-technical dictionary definition for sand is “loose particles of hard broken rock. To a sedimentologist sand is an unconsolidated (loose), rounded to angular rock fragment or minteral grain having a diameter in the range of 0.0625 to 2.0 mm .
