Young seamstress Abby decided to leave her home and see the great wide world. “Let courage guide you,” said her father. “I wish you goodwill,” her little brother added. “Have faith,” her mother encouraged her.
They said their goodbyes and Abby went on her way.
After she had found a nice spot, she rolled up her sleeves and the sewing salon was up and running in no time. She was very happy to start working.
“Knock, knock, knock.” There was somebody at the door. When Abby opened it, a strong draught of wind blew into the room. A tall, bluish man with long, curly hair and even longer beard came in with it. He menacingly said: “You just wait and wait here, but nobody comes near. People are only buying the clothes that the other dressmaker sews! Return to your home town, here you are just a clown.”
And well well! As soon as she uttered the word fear, the uninvited guest gritted his teeth and ran away. This man with long beard was none other than Fear. And Fears are most afraid of themselves.
These words sent a chill through Abby’s heart and she almost froze with fear, but then she remembered her father’s words. She overcame her fear, bravely looked straight in man’s eyes and stood up to him: “Have no fear. I will not allow my plan to be ruined by another man!”
“Knock, knock, knock.” There was somebody at the door again. When she opened it, stuffy air filled the room. Then three women entered. The first one seemed annoyed, the second one sullen and the third one listless. They were making circles around Abby and talking one over another “You will be sorry. It won’t be pretty. Your hands will bleed from the blisters. The blood will ruin the fabric. The fabric will be eaten by moths. The rats will chew through buttons. You will stab yourself with the sewing needle. You’ll cut yourself with scissors. You will make a mistake.”
They were speaking all at the same time and making circles around Abby, and all of this made Abby dizzy.
At first she did not understand what they wanted, but then she realized. They were threating her with all possible and impossible complications. She suddenly lost all of her strength and almost fainted because of feeling weak.
At the very last moment she remembered her brother’s words. Feeling cheerful, she laughed: “When we overcome troubles, the fun doubles.” “Outrageous,” the visitors yelled and then fled away. These women were Troubles and it would be a real shame if they became fun.
“Knock, knock, knock.” This was the third knock at the door. When she opened it, a dense fog filled the room, and she barely noticed the appearance of a grey man. However, she heard his voice very clearly, “Oh, this is very ugly. Nobody sews like this. If you will not sew like others, everybody will make fun of you.”
Desperate Abby thought of her unusual cuts and unfinished models and was ready to throw them all away, but then she remembered her mother’s words. With sincere confidence in her ideas she defied the grey man: “There is no doubt I will continue to sew, and I know my business will grow.” The ruthless guest was none other than Doubt. As soon as he heard his name, he doubted about himself and disappeared along with the fog.
Abby continued with her work in peace and created a beautiful collection of dresses, skirts, paints, shirts, coats, and everything else that young and old, tall and small, skinny and not so skinny, sad and happy and everyone else could wear. And finally the big moment came. Abby opened the doors of her salon and anxiously waited for what would happen.
“Oh my, how pretty this is. I haven't seen anything like this before. I'll have this. And I'll have this, were the words of excitement that made the young dressmaker overwhelmed with joy and pride.
Soon the first customers arrived.
You can still hear knocking on Abby's door, but
