ADULT PROGRAMS

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING | Studio Sessions with Irene Baron

Saturdays, April 29, May 20, June 24, 2–4 pm, at the ZMA. $12 members, $17 not-yet-members. Or $30 members, $45 not-yet-members when you register for all three sessions at once by April 22. OIL PAINTING| Plein Air Workshop with Neil Riley and Fred Fochtman

Friends and award-winning artists Neil Riley and Fred Fochtman will conduct a collaborative three-day plein air painting workshop at the Zanesville Museum of Art Wednesday through Friday, May 24–26, 8:30 am–5 pm, at the ZMA. $325 for members and not-yet-members. GUIDED GALLERY SKETCH HOUR | First Saturday of the Month Saturdays, May 6, June 3, July 1, 10–11 am, at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members, or $18 when you register for all three sessions by March 25. Drawing benches and boards are provided, or bring your favorite sketchbook or art journal from home. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register one week in advance for individual sessions, or register for all three sessions by May 1.

ART JOURNALING | Monthly Meet Up

Thursdays, April 13, May 25, June 15, 6–7 pm, at the ZMA. $15 members, $22 not-yet-members. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register by April 10.

REEL MEAL| With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story Saturday, April 15, 6–8 pm. Free and open to the public. Donations to Reel Meal welcome. This program is held at Seiler’s Studio and Gallery, 127 S. 7th Street, Zanesville. No registration required.

THE ADVENTUROUS PALETTE | Jewelry Edition Saturday, July 8, 5–7 pm, at the ZMA. $40 for members, $47 not-yet-members. No experience required. All materials, wine, and lite bites are included in the cost of the workshop. Must be 21 or older to enroll. Register by July 1.

ZMA CONCERT SERIES THE DANTES Enjoy the sounds of the ‘50s with Don Susa, and his Pittsburg, PA friends Bob Palombi, Rick Funaro, and Patsy Molinaro. Thursday, May 18, 5:30–7:30 pm, on the ZMA lawn. Should it rain, the concert will take place inside the ZMA. TREMOLO STRING QUARTET Encore Ensembles presents Tremolo String Quartet playing music composed by some of America’s most popular composers. ART ON TAP | Social Creativity Hour

CHILDREN’S and TEEN PROGRAMS FREE FAMILY DAY AT THE ZMA | Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy an afternoon of experimenting with various homemade greeting card techniques. Try your hand at collage, printmaking, and mixed media to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind cards just in time for Mother’s Day. | For Children 15 months–4 years

JumpstART is a new program for preschoolers that meets the second Friday of each month. Expose your child to the exciting world of art. Each session is unique as you both experiment with new materials, discover art-making techniques, and explore hidden treasures in the ZMA’s galleries. Fridays, April 14, May 12, June 9, and July 14, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. Free for members and not-yet-members. Recommended for ages 15 months–4 years. Registration required. GETTING WARMER APR 14 Discover the difference between warm and cool colors, and then create a really “cool” work of your own.

MAY 12 MAY FLOWERS Search the ZMA galleries for flowers, large and small, and then use pastels to make your own floral masterpiece. CHALK THE WALK JUN 9 Get outside with your preschooler and experiment with a fun, new way of using sidewalk chalk. Discover the colorful landscapes of painter Karl Kappes, and create your own on the ZMA’s walkways.

JUL 14 SHAPESHIFTER Explore the bright, bold designs you find in the quilt exhibition Shapeshifter | Sewn Constructions by Elizabeth Brandt and then create your own colorful collage.

ART VOYAGERS | For Children Grades K–3 Become a ZMA Art Voyager, and begin your art adventure! Each month children in grades kindergarten through third will travel through history or explore the globe to learn about a different culture or a new art form. Create an exciting project, and receive a stamp in your Art Voyagers passport. Each stamp gets you one step closer to a secret treasure. Saturdays, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 15, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades K–3. Voyage to Africa’s Ivory Coast, and discover the history of mask making. Learn the stories behind the bold, abstract designs of the different styles and materials used to create traditional West African masks. Use what you learn to carve your own plaster mask and finish it off with paint and found objects.

Journey to Japan during the Edo Period, and discover the lasting beauty of Japanese woodblock printing. See how the style has changed over the generations, and create your own relief block prints.

Travel back in time, and experience the colorful world of French Impressionism. Experiment with impressionistic painting techniques to complete your own beautiful landscape. Visit the small town of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and discover the deep-rooted tradition of quilting as an expressive art form. Become inspired by the wide variety of shapes, colors, and patterns, and create your own mixed media collage.


Master’s Apprentice | For Children in Grades 4–6 Become an apprentice to masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Georgia O'Keeffe, or Mary Cassatt. Each month children in grades four through six will investigate the art, style, and technique used by a different master artist, then they will create their own masterpiece. For each class, participants will earn apprentice rewards to add to their very own artist palette. Fill the palette with colorful rewards to receive unique art supplies and discounts on future programs. Saturdays, May 20, June 17, July 22, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades 4–6. Explore the ZMA’s extensive pottery collection and discover the artistry of Helen Smith, a prominent decorator for Weller Pottery. Be inspired by Weller’s various shapes and designs, and create your own vessel out of air-dry clay.

Examine the works in An Artist of All Seasons: Landscape Paintings by Karl Kappes, and study his various painting methods. Create your own beautiful landscape painting using his approach.

Join artist Elizabeth Brant, whose work is on view in Shapeshifter | Sewn Constructions by Elizabeth Brandt and who will make a guest appearance and discuss how fabric is used as an expressive art media. You and Brandt will create your own fabric collage on canvas.

Z MA | Zanesville Teens Making Art Invisible Poetry with Elizabeth Christy and the Zane State Idea Lab Transform your poetry into a mystifying work of sidewalk art. Join poet Elizabeth Christy and learn a little about the process of this art form, pen several original poems, and then, using Zane State College’s IDEA Lab, transform your favorite verses into large-scale sidewalk stencils. Using a unique spray and those templates, you and your friends will convert the sidewalks of downtown Zanesville into a secret and inspiring canvas, which is only visible in the rain. Your invisible poetry will appear and reappear on rainy days for up to four months. Thursdays, June 8, June 22, July 13, July 27, August 10, and August 31, 4:30–6:30 pm, at the ZMA. Free for members. $15 for a yearly student museum membership for not-yet-members. Free student memberships are available. Contact Misty Johnson for more information. No experience required. Sparks!! Improv Team at the ZMA Thursday, May 11, 6:30 pm, at the ZMA. Free and open to the public, No registration required. The Sparks!! Improv Team is a group of regional teens trained in the art of live comedic performance. Affiliated with The PowerHouse of Southeastern Ohio, Inc., Sparks!! members perform regularly throughout southeastern Ohio, and many received training at the Teen Comedy Festival in Chicago, Illinois—the birthplace of improv theatre.
