Many of you volunteer your time and share your expertise with the ZMA, working year-round to create a more beautiful institution and a more meaningful museum experience for the entire community. Whether administering the visitor services desk, greeting and assisting museum guests, inventorying and shelving books in the Longaberger Art Research Library, leading tours of our collections for guests of all abilities and ages, or assisting staff with the daunting task of collection research, your valuable service enriches the day-to-day operation of this museum. Thank you. There are those members and groups who take on special projects at the ZMA that I would like to recognize. The Muskingum County Master Gardeners cares for the Bebe Grant Memorial Garden, and the Meadow Vale Garden Club beautifies the museum’s main entrance, planting a range of colorful annuals. The museum’s evolving Board of Directors provides insightful and strategic governance that guides our growth, and the Beaux Arts Club donates critical funds to the museum generated from the proceeds of events like Art in the Garden, their annual fundraiser. I would also like to thank you for your ongoing membership support of the ZMA. Your financial contributions allow us to offer extraordinary exhibitions and public programming to the community. A special thank you to the ZMA’s Masterpiece Society; participants in the Adopt a Masterpiece program; the Taylor-McHenry Memorial Fund, whose funding supported summer art camp; the Otis W. Crawford and Margie Neil Crawford Trust; and Mr. Don Wietmarschen who will Dance with the Divas on July 23, 2016, raising funds for the Zanesville Musuem of Art. Thank you all for your steadfast support of the museum, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely, Laine Snyder

BOARD OF DIREC TORS

Last month I attended the Ohio Museum Association conference in Columbus, Ohio, where I had the good fortune to meet colleagues and discuss aspects of museum administration from collection care, to membership, to volunteer cultivation. After one of the sessions, I talked with an Ohio History Connection staffer who mentioned her recent enjoyable visit to the ZMA. We spoke about a few of the latest changes, those underway, and those yet to come. It was a rare opportunity to reflect upon just how much this museum has accomplished in the recent past and those who made it possible—members like you.

Left: Catherine Butler, detail of Gemütlichkeit, 2015. Right: Barbara Vogel, Esther, 2015. Both works on view in the exhibition 72nd Ohio Annual Exhibition, on view through September 9, 2016.

EXHIBITIONS SUSPENDED GATHERING |An Installation by S ue Cavanaugh On view through August 27, 2016 Columbus-based fiber artist Sue Cavanaugh transformed the museum’s Golden Gallery into a dynamic space where clusters of fiber forms appear to descend from the gallery’s soaring rafters. Interested in the concept of gathering and how works relate to one another, Cavanaugh altered common parachute fabric, creating twenty-three unique and colorful fiber works—each hand-stitched and painted—that were then assembled on site in an improvisational way to create one large suspended gathering. Visitors are invited to walk in-between and around the one-of-a-kind amorphous work and contemplate inclusion, exclusion, estrangement, and union.

72 nd OHIO ANNUAL EXHIBITION On view through September 9, 2016

This year’s Ohio Annual Exhibition received nearly four hundred entries—more than any year in recent memory. Exhibition juror and Director of the Ohio Craft Museum, Betty Talbott, had the delightful challenge of selecting fifty-five works of art from this exceptional pool of entries that represent a range of media including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, glass, and the fiber arts. This exhibition showcases the diversity and vitality of contemporary Ohio artists.

SUSANS | Reflec tions On view through July 30, 2016 This exhibition brings together more than twenty works created by accomplished regional artists Susan Nash and Susan Stubbins. Co-owners of Gallery 202 in downtown Zanesville, Nash and Stubbins create dynamic works using mixed media collage techniques. Constructing layers of meaning in their original drawings or fiber pieces, the two Susans express compositionally bold and stylistically gentle harmonies that reflect aspects of the natural world.

SOUTHEAST OHIO WATERMEDIA SOCIE T Y ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION On view September 7, 2016, through January 7, 2017 The ZMA is the proud host of the Southeast Ohio Watermedia Society’s annual juried show, which highlights the exceptional work created in various water-based artistic media including watercolor, collage, acrylics, inks, and temperas. For more information on the Southeast Ohio Watermedia Society and its programs, please contact SEOWSart@gmail.com.

AMERIC AN MODERNISM, URBAN REALISM, and THE EIGHT On view October 7, 2016, through January 7, 2017

This fall the ZMA will exhibit notable works from a private collection featuring paintings by The Eight. In the early twentieth century, Robert Henri led a group of artists in establishing a distinctly American style of painting. The group became known for its realistic views of urban life—from the exuberance of street life to the prosperity of the middle class. In 1908, eight artists showed their work at the Macbeth Gallery in New York in the landmark exhibition called simply The Eight. Along with Henri, these realists included William Glackens, George Luks, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, Maurice Prendergast, Ernest Lawson, and Arthur B Davies. More information about this exhibition, the exhibition opening, and public programs will appear in the fall Member Bulletin and online at www.zanesvilleart.org.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS PICTURING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD | Family Day in Putnam Enjoy the last days of summer weather along historic streets as you draw and paint images inspired by the freedom seekers of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network of people helping escaped slaves make their way north to freedom. Putnam is home to six buildings important to the Underground Railroad and ending slavery, including the Stone Academy and the Putnam Presbyterian Church. The ZMA is proud to partner with On the Same Page Muskingum and Muskingum County History to present an afternoon of art for the whole family in the Putnam Historic District. Saturday, September 10, 1–3 pm at the Stone Academy Historic Site and Museum, 115 Jefferson Street, Zanesville. Free and open to the public. Recommended for all ages. No registration required.

DOODLEBUGS | Discovery Hour Introduce your preschooler to the art of discovery within the ZMA’s galleries. Every second Friday, engage the senses and captivate the imagination through special activities around the museum. Second Fridays of the month, July 8, August 12, and September 9, 10:30–11:30 am at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $6 per session for not-yet-members. Recommended for pre-kindergarten. Register one week prior to each class.

MOVE

Act out the stories we find in works of art by imagining how animals move, what people feel, and what artwork suggests. Preschoolers are encouraged to share feelings and relate to the art with movement.

FEEL

Let little hands get a little messy in the ZMA studios. Whether it’s pinching and shaping clay or handling brushes and paint, hands-on play encourages preschoolers to build fine motor skills and improve focus.

SEE HEAR

Count the colors, shapes, and animals we find in the Arts of Ohio Galleries. This activity encourages preschoolers to look for the tiniest details and find the biggest surprises in the ZMA’s collection. Create the sounds we find in works of art. Preschoolers will shake tambourines to match bright paintings or hoot when they find owls, encouraging them to think about the relationship between sound, imagery, rhythm, and timing.

ART ADVENTURE | Saturday Workshop Children in kindergarten through grade six will explore different media and art-making techniques at the ZMA this summer in monthly Saturday workshops. 11 am–12 pm at the ZMA. $5 per session for museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members. All materials provided. Please bring a painting smock. Problem-solve how to make a birdfeeder with different materials and shapes. Just in time for fall, older artists in grades four through six will design and decorate their own, working birdfeeders. Learn the perfect sizes, colors, and height to bring some feathered friends to your yard this year. Register by September 10

HAUNTED PAINTING

Create a Halloween scene with the classic wax-resist method. Artists in kindergarten through grade six will draw haunted houses, ghosts, and goblins with crayon. The trick is to get the crayon drawing just right before brushing on tempera paint to add the perfect spooky touch. Register by October 1

Registration often required one week prior to each class. Please visit www.zanesvilleart.org or call (740) 452-0741 for more information or to enroll.
