ADULT PROGRAMS

REEL MEAL | Simon Schama's Power of Art: Rembrandt

Join us and our Reel Meal partners in viewing this fascinating documentary on one of art history's greatest portrait painters. Learn about the life and work of Rembrandt Van Rijn as we prepare for an exciting new exhibition at the ZMA, Rembrandt: The Consummate Etcher and other 17th-Century Printmakers, on view October 25 through January 5. Saturday, September 15, 6–8 pm. Free and open to the public. Donations to Reel Meal welcome. This program is held at Seilers’ Studio and Gallery, 129 S. 7th Street, Zanesville. No registration required.

GUIDED GALLERY SKETCH HOUR | First Saturday of the Month

Be inspired by the ZMA’s extensive collections and special exhibitions, and enjoy creative company. Join a member of the ZMA education staff the first Saturday of each month and sketch your favorite artworks in one of the museum’s eighteen galleries. Saturdays, September 1, October 6, 10–11 am, at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members. Drawing benches and boards are provided, or bring your favorite sketchbook or art journal from home. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register one week in advance.

THE ADVENTUROUS PALETTE | Canvas and Cocktails Unleash your adventurous palette and explore your creative side at the ZMA. Learn something new while enjoying wine, signature cocktails, delicious hors d'oeuvres, music, and a relaxed, social environment. Our talented hostess, local art instructor Heather McFerren, will guide you step-by-step through re-creating a featured work from the ZMA’s permanent collection. Relax, laugh, and enjoy the creative company of old and new friends. Thursday, July 26 and Friday, September 21, 5–7 pm, at the ZMA. $40 for members, $47 not-yet-members. No experience required. ZMA CONCERT SERIES SEOSO LIVE IN THE ATRIUM CONCERT SERIES| Muskingum Valley Brass The ZMA and the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra presents the Muskingum Valley Brass, including David Turrill, Don Kason, Tiffany Damicone, Lucas Kaspar, and Steve Hildreth. Muskingum University’s resident faculty quintet will perform a few of their favorites and an expressionist piece composed by Dr. Michael Torres, lecturer at Muskingum University. Join us before the performance for a lecture by SEOSO director and conductor, Dr. Laura E. Schumann. Thursday, September 13, 6:45–7:30 pm, at the ZMA, in the atrium.

ART ON TAP | Social Creativity Hour Tap into your inner artist with the ZMA at Weasel Boy Brewing Company. Join local artist, Carrie Turner, the third Tuesday of the month and create unique, hands-on art projects, perfect for artists and beginners alike. Enjoy an evening of fine craft beer, wine, great food, and creative company. Tuesdays, August 21, September 18, 6–7 pm. Free and open to the public. No experience required. All materials provided. This program is held at Weasel Boy Brewing Company, 126 Muskingum Avenue, Zanesville. No registration required.

Explore the stories related to some of your favorite colors and discover the major role color has played throughout history and in our culture. CHILDREN’S and TEEN PROGRAMS FREE FAMILY DAY AT THE ZMA | Back to School Celebrate the back to school season with the whole family at the ZMA. Create exciting art projects using your favorite school subjects like math, science, and language arts. Enjoy an afternoon of creativity, live music, and yummy after-school snacks. | For Children 15 months–4 years

JumpstART your preschooler’s creativity at the ZMA every second Friday of each month. Expose your toddler to the exciting world of art. Each session is unique as you both experiment with new materials, discover art-making techniques, and explore hidden treasures in the ZMA’s galleries. Fridays, August 10, September 14, and October 12, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. Free for members and not-yet-members. Recommended for ages 15 months–4 years. Registration required.

AUGUST 10 SCRATCHBOARD ART Explore the ZMA galleries with your preschooler and discover how artists use an amazing variety of lines to create beautiful works of art. Create your own beautiful scratchboard art using your favorite styles of lines. STILL LIFE SEPTEMBER 14 Find everyday objects in paintings throughout the ZMA galleries with your preschooler. Become a still life designer and create your own masterpiece of your favorite things.

OCTOBER 12 STORYTELLING Discover how artists use art to tell stories. Experiment with an exciting new painting technique to create colorful characters and share their stories with your fellow JumpstART friends.

ART VOYAGERS | For Children Grades K–3 Become a ZMA Art Voyager, and begin your art adventure! Each month children in grades kindergarten through third will travel through history or explore the globe to learn about a different culture or a new art form. Create an exciting project, and receive a stamp in your Art Voyagers passport. Each stamp gets you one step closer to a secret treasure. Saturdays, August 11, September 8, and October 13, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades K–3. Registration required.

Ancient Greece

AUGUST 11

Travel back in time and become inspired by the beautiful designs of ancient Greek pottery. Explore the ZMA galleries and discover how artists today are still inspired by this fascinating era. Use scratchboards to design your own vessel in the famous red-figure style of ancient Greece.

Journey to New York City in the mid-1900s and discover the world of American Realism. Use classical drawing techniques to capture objects on paper like still life painter Luigi Lucioni.

Experience Cleveland through the eyes of a group of artists known at The Cleveland School as you explore the new ZMA exhibition, Watercolor Paintings from The Cleveland School: An Urban Life. Create your own watercolor urban landscape of your hometown.


Master’s Apprentice | For Children in Grades 4–6 Become an apprentice to masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Georgia O'Keeffe, or Mary Cassatt. Each month children in grades four through six will investigate the art, style, and technique used by a different master artist, then they will create their own masterpiece. For each class, participants will earn apprentice rewards to add to their very own artist palette. Fill the palette with colorful rewards to receive unique art supplies and discounts on future programs. Saturdays, August 18, September 15, and October 20, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades 4–6. Registration required.

Get a glimpse into the mind of textile artist Mary Ann Tipple as you compare the photograph that inspired her piece Men of Clay and the finished quilted wall hanging. Find an image that inspires you and recreate it in an exciting new art style. Become inspired by the amazingly lifelike still life paintings of Italian-American artist Luigi Lucioni. Practice studying objects carefully like Lucioni and create your own mixed-media masterpiece.

Study Eckhardt's beautiful sculptures, created for public libraries in the 1930s, illustrating children's literature. Create your own colorful sculpture of your favorite story or book.

| Zanesville Teens Making Art Z MA A Storybook Christmas Work with the Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce and be a part of their annual A Storybook Christmas holiday display. Design and create a collaborative, large-scale work of outdoor public art and help Zanesville kickoff this festive season. Thursdays, September 20, October 4, October 18, November 1, and November 15, 6:15–7:30 pm, at the ZMA. The final installation date is to be determined and will take place at Zane's Landing Park in downtown Zanesville. Dates and times are subject to change according to participants’ availability. Free for members. $15 for a yearly student museum membership for not-yet members. Free student memberships are available. Contact Misty Johnson for more information. No experience required. Recommended for teens grades 7–12. Registration required by September 13.

Y-Bridge Arts Festival Join us Friday, August 3, 2–8 pm, and Saturday, August 4, 11am–8 pm, at the ZMA’s Children’s Tent during the 2018 Y-bridge Arts Festival, located at Zane’s Landing Park. Bring the whole family for a weekend of art activities, hands-on demonstrations, fine art, live music, food, and drinks. The Y-bridge Arts Festival and the ZMA’s Children’s Art Tent are free and open to the public. For more information about the Y-bridge Arts Festival, visit www.ybridgeartsfestival.com. Visit the ZMA’s Children’s Art Tent throughout the festival for tons of cool art activities. Create fun projects to take home, snap a photo of yourself as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Edvard Munch’s The Scream, add your own personal touch to our collaborative chalk art display, and enjoy the creative company of old and new friends.
