CHALK THE WALK | First Friday Art Walk Join the ZMA and the Ohio Chalk Art Guild during June’s First Friday Art Walk in downtown Zanesville and discover the exciting process of Bierstadt’s Old Faithful art form, live music, refreshments, and a chance to chalk your own section of the walk. GUIDED GALLERY SKETCH HOUR | First Saturday of the Month

Saturdays, May 5, June 2, July 7, 10–11 am, at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members. Drawing benches and boards are provided, or bring your favorite sketchbook or art journal from home. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register one week in advance.

THE ADVENTUROUS PALETTE | Canvas and Cocktails Unleash your adventurous palette and explore your creative side at the ZMA. Learn something new while enjoying wine, signature cocktails, delicious hors d'oeuvres, music, and a relaxed, fun-loving environment. Each month, our talented host will guide you step-bystep through re-creating a featured work from the ZMA’s permanent collection. This spring, be inspired by ZMA works such as Flower Still Life from 1601, Upland Meadow by Howard Chandler Christy, and Cows Beside a Stream by John Jay Barber. Relax, laugh, and enjoy the creative company of old and new friends. Wednesdays, May 23, June 20, and Thursday, July 26, 5–7 pm, at the ZMA. $40 for members, $47 not-yet-members. ZMA CONCERT SERIES THE DANTES | Pittsburg, PA Singing Quartet Enjoy the spring weather and the sounds of the 50s as Don Susa, Bob Palombi, Rick Funaro, and Patsy Molinaro sing tunes from the Doo-wop era. JumpstART your preschooler’s creativity at the ZMA every second Friday of each month. Expose your toddler to the exciting world of art. Each session is unique as you both experiment with new materials, discover art-making techniques, and explore hidden treasures in the ZMA’s galleries. MAY 11 ABSTRACTIFY Experience The Character of Mexico 1959–1960: Works by Dr. Charles Dietz with your preschooler and discover Dietz’s fascination with abstraction. Create your own bold, colorful abstract designs from familiar subjects. SCULPT JUN 8 See a wide variety of sculpture from all around the world with your preschooler in the ZMA’s Diverse Cultures Gallery. ART VOYAGERS | For Children Grades K–3 Become a ZMA Art Voyager, and begin your art adventure! Each month children in grades kindergarten through third will travel through Voyagers passport. Each stamp gets you one step closer to a secret treasure. Saturdays, May 12, June 9, and July 14, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. Discover the cultural wonder of Mexico through the eyes of former ZMA director, Dr. Dietz. Draw inspiration from several landscapes on view in the ZMA’s current exhibition The Character of Mexico 1959–1960: Works by Dr. Charles Dietz, and create your own vibrant, abstract landscape.

Journey to the northernmost reaches of our continent and immerse yourself in Inuit culture. View beautiful examples of soapstone carvings in the ZMA’s Diverse Cultures Gallery and sculpt your own Inuitinspired soap carving.

Experience the here and now as you explore the 73rd Ohio Annual Exhibition. Discover the innovative and sometimes unconventional ways Ohio artists use art materials. Experiment with nontraditional painting techniques and push the boundaries with your own artwork.


Master’s Apprentice | For Children in Grades 4–6 Become an apprentice to masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Georgia O'Keeffe, or Mary Cassatt. Each month children in grades four through six will investigate the art, style, and technique used by a different master artist, then they will create their own masterpiece. For each class, participants will earn apprentice rewards to add to their very own artist palette. Fill the palette with colorful rewards to receive unique art supplies and discounts on future programs. Saturdays, April 21, May 19, June 16, and July 21, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yetmembers. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades 4–6. Become inspired by Paul Bogatay’s Horse. Explore the ZMA galleries and discover many ways horses have been depicted throughout art history, and then create your own wrapped wire horse sculpture. Become an apprentice to the one and only Pablo Picasso. Discover the exciting progression of his work throughout his career and see how his iconic Cubist style influenced others around the world. Gain insight into seeing a subject through the eyes of a Cubist, experiment with abstraction, and create your own striking masterpiece. Study the monumental works of internationally celebrated sculptor Henry Moore and explore his use of negative space. Use carving techniques to create your own free-standing sculptural forms.

Draw inspiration from local artist Leslie Cope’s vivid paintings of local landmarks, landscapes, animals, and everyday rural life, and paint your favorite place to visit in Zanesville or the surrounding areas. Bring postcards, photographs or other reference material to give your work an added personal touch.

| Zanesville Teens Making Art Z MA Street Painting Work with professional street painter and Ohio Chalk Art Guild member, Sheryl Lazenby, and experiment with chalk painting techniques. Transform your original designs into spectacular, large scale public art. Work alongside Lazenby and showcase your finished street paintings during June’s First Friday Art Walk in downtown Zanesville. Thursdays, April 12, April 26, May 3, May 24, 6:15–7:30 pm, at the ZMA. Participants will execute their final projects on June 1 as part of the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Zanesville. Dates and times are subject to change according to participants’ availability. Free for members. $15 for a yearly student museum membership for not-yet members. Free student memberships are available. Contact Misty Johnson for more information. No experience required. Recommended for teens grades 7–12.

GIRL SCOUT DAY AT THE ZMA | Geocaching Extravaganza Discover the exciting world of geocaching with the ZMA and our partners, the Muskingum Valley Park District and the Muskingum Valley Park Society. Explore the museum grounds and the neighboring park and uncover secret treasures called “geocaches” using GPS. Create your own trade items to swap with the treasures in geocaches you find. Throughout this event, scouts will fulfill all requirements to earn their Junior Geocaching badge. For Cadettes, this is a great way to get started on your geocaching patch. All participants will receive a participation patch. Saturday, April 28, 1–4 pm, at the ZMA. $10 for museum members, $15 for not-yet-museum-members. Adult chaperones are free. One chaperone is required for every eight girls. Recommended for Junior and Cadette Girl Scout troops.
